Cracking the “Code” on how to produce exponential results in music

Cracking the “Code” on how to produce exponential results in music

We’ve all heard the saying, “use it or lose it,” especially when it comes to learning and teaching.

And you know what they say?!?… If you want to succeed with teaching music, you need more variety, more skills, more time, more ideas, more lessons, more personality, more qualifications, more training, more instruments, more services, more youtube videos, more information, more money, more meetings, more admin, more prep, more concerts …. more, more, more!

But what if I told you that these widely held beliefs might be misguided? What if, in fact, the key to growth, success, learning, results and personal fulfilment in music teaching doesn't just lie in piling more of everything on everyday?

Today I’m going to share a new perspective from the ‘talent code’ mentality that unexpectedly infiltrated my life over the past 20+ years in music teaching and publishing. What I’ve noticed is that there is  a compounding nature to learning music, associated with exposure and consistency. … and it starts when you slow things down into a learning zone called deep practice.

Today, I’m going to introduce you to the mindset and science that happens when you allow ONE small yet simple, carefully crafted musical skill to build upon another with no gaps or interruptions in between, and how it produces exponential results quickly and with less effort.

Are you ready to challenge the notion that more of everything is always better?

If you are, then let's dive into this exploration of WHY and then HOW this phenomenon of exponential learning works. Sometimes, small yet consistent and simple, focused steps are the keys to reaching your music teaching goals. Stick around, because by the end of this episode, you might just find yourself questioning your own approach to teaching and life!

53: What do you really need to upgrade your music curriculum? The gifts and challenges

There’s no doubt about it.. These are changing times! And music curricula are changing. Here’s the thing: creating an upgraded music curriculum can be incredibly confusing and frustrating

So it’s no wonder you might  feel overwhelmed and overworked just thinking about curriculum and how to implement it into the classroom!

So today I thought I’d share with you some insights which were gained from our work here at the Fun Music Company as we analyse and look at all the different curriculum documents that come across our desks. We look at them all from our home country of Australia of course, plus the international ones as well.

In this podcast I want to share with you three GIFTS that any curriculum document will give you, as well as three challenges that can be associated with them.

This is because I really am a firm believer that everything in life has two sides. Its yin & yang, day & night and there is always two sides of a coin!

Psychologist Carl Jung is quoted as saying "Wisdom accepts that all things have two sides"

Let's awaken our confidence about working with a new curricula by looking at both sides to take that overwhelm away,  so we’ll be ready to implement and upgrade to the next level. We’re getting you SET today!

Could “Minding The Gap” work for you?

Could “Minding The Gap” work for you?

Can you remember when you were filled with thoughts, dreams and ambitions about the impact you’d create when you started teaching?

That’s how most of us live our early lives - until the real world brings us back to reality and we start teaching in a school where we hit major obstacles.  Whether your students or parents don’t like you; your principal doesn’t want to rehire you; you’re teaching on a cart and it’s hard or Sally doesn’t have a hand but wants to play the violin… These are all challenges that every music teacher faces and being able to navigate them can mean the difference between having a fulfilling career or quitting!

What if you could stand on a foundation of wisdom and experience and combine what you have now with what you want? That would be an incredible career wouldn’t it?

Wait. It’s possible!

All you have to do is “Mind the Gap”. I’ll show you how in today’s conversation.

Creating a Daily Empowerment Plan for 2022: What it means and how to use it.

Creating a Daily Empowerment Plan for 2022: What it means and how to use it.

So you’re looking ahead at your calendar and the date keeps getting closer. The first term of teaching for 2022 you’ve been preparing for is coming at you full steam ahead, and just thinking of it makes you feel uncertain and anxious.

What will happen when that first school bell finally rings? What changes will be about to take place for the 2022 teaching year? How will you focus amidst the pressure and nerves?

Since it’s a new year with new goals, visions and plans I thought it was the perfect time to introduce you to what I’ve learned about the gift of certainty. With this sorted, you can have certainty in the classroom (or in hybrid, remote or in person teaching ) and therefore get certainty in your live. So the question is how do we create certainty in ourselves? … How do you create that feeling like you can make it all happen despite what’s happening around you… because when you create that “I can do this NO Matter what”  feeling, the truth is you can do the job to the best of your ability,.. and you’ll thrive because of it.

Why being late is a powerful lesson.

Why being late is a powerful lesson.

Have you ever been late for your classes? How do you react when other staff members are disappointed because of your lateness? Does being late teach you important lessons? ...Or is it the last thing you want to think about.

As music teachers being late from time to time is inevitable - there’s not much time between lessons, teaching from a cart can be time consuming, classroom drama’s happen and returning teachers be can blissfully unaware about being late coming back to the class while the next teacher is getting angrier by the second because you’re running late!

Whatever the reason- there’s a sinking feeling about when you’re late ...Or worse still you hear it from one of the students. So what do you do?

Journalling And a BIG secret.

Journalling And a BIG secret.

I’ve been journaling for years now and I wanted to share one of my big takeaways that I had with it this week. Leading up to Thanksgiving this is something we think about a lot. One of the first things I suggest to people who are starting out is to do something that feels good on the inside- then it will start radiating outwards to your school, students etc. One of the things I suggest is to trash conventional diaries. I know that might sound scary!! Why do I do this? 1. To customize it the way you want it, means you get out of it what you need- let’s face it, no-one else is going to read it! 2. Writing a bunch of things on a list doesn’t make you feel good- it just gives you a long list!! And the whole point of journaling is to help you feel good. Listen to find out more!

Just told: no singing, no instruments. Any suggestions?

Just told: no singing, no instruments. Any suggestions?

In this episode of the weekly spark for Music Teachers, Janice Tuck addresses the issue of what music teachers can do in lessons when they’re told that they can’t sing or play any instruments due to COVID-19.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a massive effect on all teachers, but particularly music teachers, as we’re being asked to change everything we do, and teach without using some of the most important things we do: singing and playing.

Here are some resources that are mentioned during the podcast:

1. Music Theory

At the Fun Music Company we have a complete music theory course, plus lots of innovative worksheets in our Music Theory Fun Sheet series, plus some Printable Music Games.

2. CONNECT Lessons

The Fun Music Company Curriculum program for grades K-6 contains a complete listening program called CONNECT where students watch a short video and complete a worksheet given.

current curriculum members have access to 70+ of these lessons, and here are a couple of sample ones for non-members:

For Grade 5: Theme from Star Wars

For Grade 6: Ride of the Valkyries

3. Composition

Composing is one of the greatest opportunities that this pandemic brings us - and you can use lessons like in our Composition with GarageBand progam.

You can get 60+ prepared lessons with tutorial videos and worksheets with this training program.
