Hanneke Cassel: Faith & Play As Super Powers

Hanneke Cassel: Faith & Play As Super Powers

A prolific composer, Hanneke writes music from personal experiences of love and loss as well as to commemorate the joys and sorrows in the lives of loved ones. Hanneke’s latest release, Trip to Walden Pond, features traditional Scottish and Cape Breton tunes and seventeen new pieces composed in the Scottish idiom. While her lively style is very much evident, this new album carries a deep, soulful sound with songs of celebration and farewell. Produced by Finnish musician Antti Järvelä (FRIGG, JPP, Baltic Crossing), the album showcases long-time musical collaborators cellist Mike Block, guitarists Keith Murphy and Christopher Lewis, fiddler/violist Jeremy Kittel, and pianist Dave Wiesler. Antti Järvelä contributes guitar and piano to a couple of tracks and piper Samppa Saarinen is featured on the uilleann pipes. Trip to Walden Pond, similar to Hanneke’s five previous albums, offers mellifluous arrangements of traditional fiddle music and original tunes that evoke humor and heart. This latest album also includes several compositions penned by Hanneke as commissions to benefit Many Hopes, a children’s education nonprofit based in Kenya that she avidly supports.

A native of Port Orford, Oregon, Hanneke started out as a Texas-style fiddler and went on to win the 1997 U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship, which awarded her the opportunity to study with Alasdair Fraser and introduced her to fiddle camps and the folk community -- both of which continue to play an integral role in her life. Hanneke teaches regularly at Fraser’s Valley of the Moon and Sierra Fiddle Camps, the Mike Block String Camp (run by her husband, acclaimed cellist Mike Block), Harald Haugaard’s International Fiddle School, and the Boston Harbor Scottish Fiddle School. She has served as a guest instructor in the American Roots department at Berklee College of Music, where she received her Bachelor’s of Music in Violin Performance.

Hanneke is a sought-after performer who has graced stages across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. She has been featured at Celtic Connections (Glasgow, Scotland), KVMR Celtic Fest (Grass Valley, USA), Milwaukee Irish Fest (Milwaukee, USA), Celtic Colours (Cape Breton, Canada), WGBH Christmas Celtic Sojourn (Boston, USA) and the National Celtic Festival (Port Arlington, Australia). The Hanneke Cassel Band features Mike Block on cello and alternating guitarists Keith Murphy and Christopher Lewis.

Vicky D'Ascoli: Conquering Genetic Hearing Loss & Living Optimally

Vicky D'Ascoli: Conquering Genetic Hearing Loss & Living Optimally

Vicky was born in Bermuda to Military father.  She lived most of her life between California and Colorado. For 9 year she lived in Saudi Arabia working at the King’s hospital.  After her time in the desert of Saudi Arabia, she fulfilled a big dream and moved to the desert of Arizona.

Vicky says: I am what is known as a geriatric Mom, I was 41 years old when I had my one and only child in Saudi Arabia.  I have two step children, one in Colorado and one in Maine. Have a granddaughter who is 2 and a granddog who is 1 year old as well as three cats!

I was born hard of hearing and used to wear hearing aids.  I attended special education up until 5th grade.  Then, I mainstreamed into regular school with its challenges.  In 2004, I got my cochlear implant which I love and it came in time, too.  My work started using personal work phones shortly after that and the cochlear implant assisted  me with hearing on those phones at work.  Cell phones were becoming popular, too.  But, gravitate to texting instead of hearing on the phone.

I am quite active. I ride bikes, used to mountain bike seriously, but now take hilly streets nearby; hike, treadmill, and floor exercises.  I climb stairs at work. I love to sew, read, and cook.  I do play the piano if only I would sit long enough!

Vicky attended nursing school in Colorado, and eventually obtained her BSN after her diploma in Colorado followed by her Master’s in Arizona. She has been a nurse for almost 40 years, working mostly on a Med/Surg floor.  While in Saudi Arabia Vicky climbed the ladder to be a Head Nurse on a Med/Surg floor.  After a rich career in nursing, Vicky is planning for her retirement in the next year or so!

Vicky met her wonderful American-Italian husband 16 years ago, and has been happily married for 13 of those years.  Vicky and Sal travel a lot, and plan to travel more after retirement!

Raymond C. Mobley: The Legacy of Dr. King

Raymond C. Mobley: The Legacy of Dr. King

Black History Month series

Raymond returns to the podcast in this live conversation during the Northwest Scottish Fiddlers annual event. We celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with our special guest Raymond.

Raymond C. Mobley is an artist based in Olympia, WA. He composes, records and produces R&B, hip-hop and jazz music. He is a veteran who has proudly served his country until retirement. As a black American in a bi-racial marriage, Ray talks about how he comes to terms with the challenges in society's racial injustices and how he rises above it  thanks to his upbringing and color-free view on life. Ray released his debut album "Breathe" on July 17th with Green Monkey Records.
In Raymond's words: "This album is a reflection of my life. I wrote, performed, recorded and edited the whole thing. I used tools from all areas of my travels and experiences to do so. It took me a while to realize that I could do all of these things if I simply applied myself. This album has been one of many ups and downs. This album took a while to complete as I struggled to find who I really was as an artist, even though I started at a young age. My siblings often ask me for advice and the one thing I always tell them is to be true to themselves without comprises. Today,
Breathe is a perfect representation of who I am. It is dedicated to the struggles that my people face still today. It is also a song that identifies the struggles that my fellow soldiers had to face in order to preserve freedom."

The Derivative Duo: Gay & Lesbian Feminist Parody Opera

The Derivative Duo: Gay & Lesbian Feminist Parody Opera

The Derivative Duo, Barbara Glenn and Susan Nivert, are feminist comedienne opera singers who live in Seattle, Washington, and who have traveled across the United States for over the past twenty years, singing parodies of opera songs that queer, ironize, and feminize the themes and style of "high opera." The Derivative Duo also parody the iconic diva with their costumes which are high camp, both glamorous and a mockery of glamour. - Walter Eugene Grodzik Barb and Susan found home in Seattle over 4 decades ago. With background stories that highlight the struggles of gay and lesbian Americans during a time when change was a promise but adjustments took time, they both found a love for each other and a love to entertain. Their performances sparked a unique and innovative way to addresses social concerns that affected the lives of gay and lesbian individuals through a confident feminist voice and an extraordinary talent with words and lyrics. After her family escaped the brutal genocide in 1979, they fled to a refugee camp in Thailand which housed 160,000 Cambodian refugees.

After a year at the camp, they were granted immigration status to the United States and were placed in a housing community with other refugees in Santa Ana California in 1980.

Rohany grew up in the Pacific Northwest where she strived to find a balance between her family’s story of survivors and her identity as a Muslim Asian-American woman.

Rohany spent the last two decades raising her family with her husband, and dedicated herself to homeschooling her son and daughter in Olympia, WA.

Today Rohany works independently as a professional virtual assistant and provides a sense of organizational branding to all of her clients through her entrepreneurial training. Rohany’s motivation, resilience, and positive outlook on life are reflected in her personal and professional relationships.

I Want You To Think About: Organizational Justice

I Want You To Think About: Organizational Justice

The concept of organizational justice is based on the idea of fairness. How an environment that is built on healthy balance, equity and justice can affect employees, and how the lack of such environment can equally and negatively impact the well being and performance of employees.

Today I want to focus on one particular organization that is doing just that.
TOGETHER! is a nonprofit organization founded in 1989 that serves youth and families in the South Sound with a mission to advance the health and well-being of all young people. They offer direct service youth programs, mobilize communities through coalitions, advocate for healthier laws, norms and systems and promote health through community and individual education.

My guest is Kahlo Flores, the director of the Clubhouse Dual Language - before and after school program branch of together, and her insights as to how implementing the fundamentals of organizational justice have in a short time transformed the two schools that she oversees.
Kahlo was born in a small town in Mexico. Her family moved to Wenatchee Washington where she grew up and played varsity soccer for the Wenatchee Panthers, as well as, playing trumpet for the High school's popular mariachi group known as Mariachi Huenachi. She moved to Western Washington and worked for the Senate and the Commission on Hispanic Affairs located at the state capitol. Kahlo obtained her bachelor's degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia and is now currently enrolled in Evergreen's master's in public administration program. Kahlo has focused on educational equity, social justice, community outreach, and Latinx issues. She joined TOGETHER! a Thurston county non-profit in 2016 starting as a volunteer through Evergreen and is now the Cohort 16 Club House and Dual Language Director. Through TOGETHER! she directs two after-school programs for the North Thurston School District serving 120 students daily grades 1st-5th.

Elliot Edmunds: The Duty and Dilemma of a Black Police Officer

Elliot Edmunds: The Duty and Dilemma of a Black Police Officer

Elliot Edmunds is police officer serving in patrol at the Evergreen State College Police Department. A true life-long learner, Elliot earned his B.A. in Art History at John Carroll University in Ohio, M.B.A. at City University of Seattle, and is currently finishing up a Criminal Justice associates degree online. Elliot’s education is also made up of his time in the Army where he deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan.

Born in New Jersey to parents who lived through the civil rights movement in the south, Elliot spent much of his childhood traveling around the United States. Attending public and private schools in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Texas gave him an understanding of how ideas and attitudes towards race, religion, sexuality, economics, and cultural values could vary wildly but still fit into the notion of what it meant to be “American.”

Joining the Army was a pivotal point in Elliot’s life. During his military career Elliot served as a non-commissioned officer in the Cavalry and a commissioned officer in the Artillery. The Army provided him with a new understanding of what “hardship” meant during his deployments. Most impactful was observing the moments of joy and affection that existed among people living in the region.

As a police officer, Elliot seeks to bring his wide range of life experiences into his interactions with the public. Believing that it is important to humanize police officers, Elliot has actively sought out outreach opportunities to participate in as a means to normalize the presence of police officers (particularly officers of color) in the community. While his efforts have not always been well received, he remains convinced of their value, particularly in this volatile period.

Alasdair Fraser: A Legacy Fueled By Questioning

Alasdair Fraser: A Legacy Fueled By Questioning

Alasdair Fraser is one of the greatest carriers of the Scottish fiddle music tradition, a fiddler whose warmly expressive playing, mastery of his instrument and deep understanding of his native music as a venerable and continually evolving art is an inspiration to generations of musicians on both sides of the Atlantic.

Alasdair was born in Clackmannan on May 14, 1955 and began taking classical violin lessons at the age of eight, enduring much teasing and leg-pulling from fellow school pupils at a time when carrying a fiddle case around was considered far from cool. Undeterred, he persevered and found a love of and natural aptitude for the violin which he applied to the Scottish music that he heard at home – his late father, Bob, and his brother, Iain, both being musicians.

In his teens Alasdair played with dance bands and began gathering the compositions of great fiddling forebears including Niel and Nathaniel Gow, William Marshall and James Scott Skinner into a repertoire that is now vast. Twice winner of the Scottish National Fiddle Championship, he also began to notice the connection between speech patterns and musical expression, especially among Gaels and the Doric speaking players in the north-east, and incorporated this into his fiddle style.

Inclined towards science as well as music at school, Alasdair went on to work as a petrophysicist with British Petroleum, a post that took him to California in 1981 and the realisation four years later, while writing out a fiddle tune during office hours, that he was in the wrong job. He decided to concentrate on music and passing on his passion and skills through programmes such as the Valley of the Moon fiddle camp, which he founded among the Californian Redwoods in 1984 and still directs, the fiddle course that he’s run on the Isle of Skye since 1987, and the more recently established Sierra Fiddle Camp, near his home in California.

As a fiddler equally capable of playing haunting Gaelic airs and rumbustious dance tunes and improvising endless variations on traditional themes, Alasdair has worked in a variety of successful partnerships, including his duos with pianist Paul Machlis and guitarist Tony McManus and his acclaimed band Skyedance. He has also guested with The Chieftains, The Waterboys, Itzhak Perlman and Los Angeles Master Chorale, appeared on innumerable broadcasts including A Prairie Home Companion and CBS TV’s Kennedy Center Honors and performed on film soundtracks including The Last of the Mohicans and Titanic. His compositions have featured in works by the Richmond (Virginia) Ballet and Shiftworks Dance Ensemble and his commissions include Fettercairn Suite.

Since 2003 Alasdair has featured in a duo with cellist Natalie Haas, restoring the wee fiddle and big fiddle partnership that flourished in eighteenth century Scotland to contemporary prominence at the cutting edge of tradition-rooted creativity. Their debut album, Fire and Grace, was voted Album of the Year at the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004, adding to Alasdair’s North American Independent Record Distributors award for his Dawn Dance album in 1996, and they continue to thrill audiences internationally with their virtuosic playing, their near-telepathic understanding and the joyful spontaneity and sheer physical presence of their music.

Representative Beth Doglio: The Stakes Are Too High

Representative Beth Doglio: The Stakes Are Too High

Beth Doglio is a State Representative, community organizer, climate leader, mother of two, and candidate for the House of Representatives in Washington’s 10th District.

Throughout her career, Beth has worked for a thriving, sustainable, just and compassionate future for all. In Congress, she will be a champion for working families, seniors, veterans, and our environment – bringing years of advocacy and leadership to a political system in need of new and energetic collaborative approach.

Serving in the Legislature since 2017, Beth is one of Washington’s foremost leaders on the environment, housing, gun safety, and issues facing working families. She has helped lead the passage of groundbreaking legislation to empower workers through higher wages and improved protections; to make Washington a leader in the fight against climate change; and to provide more resources to address homelessness.

As Vice Chair of the Capital Budget committee, she has secured millions in funding for infrastructure projects throughout the 10th Congressional District. She is a member of the LGBTQ Caucus, and a co-founder of Win With Women, a political organization that encourages women to run for office and elect them at all levels of government. In the legislature and in the community, she has fought for representation and equal opportunity for women, including young women, women of color, and LGBTQ women.

The daughter of public school educators and the granddaughter of coal miners, Beth grew up in Kankakee, a small town in Illinois. There she learned the importance of service and good government from a young age, joining her mother, a leader with the local League of Women Voters chapter, in encouraging voters to create a public health department.

After graduating from Indiana University, Beth moved to Washington state in 1987, serving as a community organizer.

Beth’s environmental leadership in our state began nearly three decades ago as the founding Executive Director of Washington Conservation Voters (WCV). Under Beth’s leadership, WCV became one of the state’s most prominent environmental organizations: developing 15 chapters, creating a robust voter education program, and playing a key role in shaping policy to protect Washington’s natural resources and environment.

Following her time at WCV, Beth worked in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, including at the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League (NARAL) and Audubon Washington, where she continued to fight for progressive, environmental, and community priorities. She also volunteered at the Noel House Homeless shelter and served on the Board of Director of Solid Ground, giving her keen insight into the homelessness and affordability challenges facing our region today.

Beth moved to Olympia in 1999, and after the birth of her second child in 2004, focused her energy on being a full-time mom – but she didn’t stop organizing or giving back to the community. Beth co-chaired Olympia’s Parks and Sidewalks ballot measure, worked with Washington Toxics Coalition to reduce the use of pesticides in local parks and school playgrounds, and volunteered at Roosevelt Elementary School, later serving as Roosevelt PTA President.

In addition to her role in the state legislature, Beth has worked at Climate Solutions since 2007 working to pass federal, state and local climate policy and serving as the director of the Power Past Coal campaign since its inception – making her an expert and a leader in efforts to defeat climate change and develop a clean energy economy.

Evie Ladin: Hailing The Strength Of Our Own Resilience

Evie Ladin: Hailing The Strength Of Our Own Resilience

Banjo player, singer, songwriter, percussive-dancer, choreographer and square-dance caller, Evie has always been surrounded by music – credit to her upbringing as daughter of an international folk dance teacher, and an old-time folk music devotee, she grew up thinking that playing music, dancing, singing with others was what people do.  Though entrenched in the traditional cultural arts of Appalachia, her home was in New York City, Baltimore, now Oakland – in cities, not mountains. But tradition bearers came through and played in her living room, with weekends spent at music festivals and house parties.  Evie’s performances, recordings and teaching reconnect Appalachian music/dance with other African-Diaspora traditions, and have been heard from A Prairie Home Companion to Lincoln Center, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass to Celtic Connections. Evie tours internationally with Keith Terry and her Evie Ladin Band; and has produced numerous albums and instructional DVDs. Writing clever, engaging songs, for her neo-trad kinetic roots band with Keith Terry & Erik Pearson, in 2019 they released two CDs: the band’s fourth album of adventurous originals, Caught On A Wire, and Riding the Rooster, totally traditional, raging fiddle/banjo duets, quickly followed by a 2020 EP of favorite cover songs Playing Our Hand. In the percussive dance world, Evie directs the moving choir MoToR/dance for live performance and award winning dance films, is Executive Director, artist and choreographer with the International Body Music Festival, and an ace freestyle flatfooter. She is a 2020 Jubilation Fellow, awarded to artists with an exceptional talent for bringing joy to people through music and movement. In the traditional music world, Evie calls rowdy community square dances, and teaches clawhammer banjo, old time harmony singing and more. An electric and entertaining live performer, Evie really enjoys balancing performance with facilitating arts learning in diverse communities. Evie Ladin is a natural entertainer with a gift for infusing folk practices with contemporary verve. —SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE For more on Evie, please visit: https://evieladin.com/ Tracks listed in this episode: You Gotta Be Hunting The Buffalo  Have It All News Cyclone

Natalie Haas: Perseverance & Passion = Success

Natalie Haas: Perseverance & Passion = Success

Season One Finale.

Natalie is one of the most sought after cellists playing traditional music today. She and Scottish fiddler Alasdair Fraser have toured as a duo for twenty years, wowing audiences at festivals and concerts worldwide with their unique sound. Their first album together, Fire & Grace, was awarded Best Album of the Year in the Scots Trad Music Awards 2004. Natalie has also toured with Mark O'Connor as a member of his Appalachia Waltz Trio. She and O'Connor premiered his double concerto for violin and cello, ¨For The Heroes¨, with the Grand Rapids, East Texas, and San Diego Symphonies. As a studio musician, Natalie has been a guest artist on over 50 albums, including those of Cape Breton fiddler Natalie MacMaster, Irish greats Altan, Solas, and Liz Carroll, and Americana icon Dirk Powell.

A graduate of the Juilliard School, where she studied with cellist Fred Sherry, Natalie discovered the cello at age nine. In addition to having extensive classical music training, she is accomplished in a broad array of fiddle genres. Her music journey found purpose when she fell in love with Celtic music at the Valley of the Moon Scottish Fiddling School at age 11. Inspired and encouraged by director Fraser, she began to investigate the cello's potential for rhythmic accompaniment to fiddle tunes, and to this day, the two continue to resurrect and reinvent the cello's historic role in Scottish music.

Natalie's skills as an educator make her one of the most in demand teachers at fiddle camps across the globe. She also teaches privately and in a workshop setting, and holds an associate professorship at the Berklee College of Music. Natalie now makes her home in Boston, where she is an active member of the traditional music scene.

Adam Johansson: The Law of Jante - You Are Nothing & The Collective Is Everything

Adam is a guitar player from Northern Sweden who practically grew up on stage. His dad rocking the piano with one hand and Adam’s stroller with the other. A few years later, trying to fall asleep behind a guitar amp, Adam got the idea to start playing himself. His roots are in jazz and blues, but he instantly fell in love with traditional/folk-music at the first encounter, at the age of 13. Since then he has been studying and playing folk-music and traveling all over the world. Adam’s musical expression is characterized by clarity, playfulness and a strong personality. Laura Cortese: “Accidental Girl Power” The Art Of Authenticity

Laura Cortese is the bandleader and primary songwriter for Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards, a group of four musicians expanding the boundaries of what an indie-folk band can be. Laura Cortese & the Dance Cards take their extensive string music background, add their knowledge of folk and roots music, and incorporate an edgy pop sensibility to create their latest album, BITTER BETTER. A stunning lesson in all the ways string instruments can be played – bowed, plucked, percussively – the album showcases Cortese and multi-instrumentalist producer Sam Kassirer (Lula Wiles, Lake Street Dive) striving to capture the most adventurous approach to each moment. The result is an album that incorporates dance-worthy foundational grooves, synth, and loops to push the boundaries of the genre. BITTER BETTER was released on JULY 17 on Compass Records. With BITTER BETTER, Laura Cortese & The Dance Cards throw out the rulebook, creating a beautifully vivid, musically unexpected canvas from their refreshingly unconventional perspective. Rushad Eggleston: Be An Imp & Make The Impossible Possible

Rushad Eggleston: Be An Imp & Make The Impossible Possible

Rushad Eggleston (“Rushadicus”) is a revolutionary cellist, composer, poet-philosopher, and entertainer whose unforgettable performances captivate and inspire all generations and types. With an intimate knowledge of classical music, jazz, and bluegrass under his fingers, coupled with an infamously infectious sense of rhythm, Rushad is a whole futuristic wonder-band expressed through just one person. Using his cello (and occasionally a guitar) as the steering wheel, Rushadicus will take you on a rocket-fueled melodic journey through space and time, and from the ridiculous to the sublime. Hopping nimbly around the stage with his cello strapped to his body while passionately singing songs that range from stuck-in-your-head-for-weeks to elaborate yet compelling miniature operas in his own language of Sneth, Eggleston is an incomparable soulful jester of modern times. A fearless improviser, Eggleston spontaneously navigates through his seemingly endless repertoire of instrumentals and vocals, only pausing briefly to set the stage for a battle between him and Bach, or rattling off with incredible speed a 3 page poem of self-fashioned words*.

If this sounds a bit far-fetched or incoherent, make no mistake: Rushad Eggleston is a world-class entertainer, with credentials. He won a full scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston and was nominated for a Grammy award while still studying there, a feat which no other member of its laundry list of legendary alumni have pulled off. Eggleston singlehandedly invented bluegrass cello and spawned a huge revival of cello in roots music. Now it seems every other band you see has some transformed cellist jamming along. In addition to acting in television commercials for the likes of Mazda, appearing on movie soundtracks and hundreds of studio recordings, Rushad was also a founding member of the popular alt-bluegrass outfit Crooked Still, legendary stringband Fiddlers 4, and explosive rock trio Tornado Rider. He has performed at renowned venues (including Carnegie Hall) in 45 states and 13 countries, and taught hundreds of youngsters worldwide how to let loose their musical imaginations and rock on the cello.
