55. Creating A Life You Love, Alcohol Free With @sarahrusbatch

55. Creating A Life You Love, Alcohol Free With @sarahrusbatch

"For decades we have been sold the idea that alcohol is our 'reward' at the end of a busy day. Not only do we use it to celebrate and commiserate, but we rely on it to relieve the stress and exhaustion of the daily grind - to help us switch off, switch on, numb emotions, enhance emotions and everything in between. We use it for self-care, for socialising, for time for ourselves." - Sarah Rusbatch

Over the past year or two, i've become increasingly more aware of the impact of alcohol in my own life and how we are role modelling and normalising drinking as part of life to our daughter Hazel. After deciding to stop drinking early in 2024, not long after I stumbled across Sarah's book, Beyond Booze, and was so compelled by her message - I had to invite her onto the podcast!

Sarah is a certified Women's Health and Wellbeing Coach, an accredited Grey Area Drinking Coach and a Key-Note speaker sharing her journey to sobriety and impact of alcohol on mental health to global audiences.

Beyond Booze will help you create a life you love so much that you no longer need to drink.

We discussed:

  • Grey area drinking
  • Jazz's experience with alcohol and increased anxiety and her decision to stop drinking alcohol
  • Mummy wine culture
  • Role modelling and normalising alcohol as part of life to our children
  • How this shapes our children's relationship with alcohol as they get older
  • How to create a life you love without alcohol
  • Sarah's tips to help people drink less and how they can go about removing alcohol
  • Sarah's tips to create a life you love so you don't feel like you are missing out by choosing not to drink alcohol

51. Returning To Exercise After Having A Baby With Rosie @hatched.house

It can feel a tad overwhelming (and a bit nerve wracking) returning to exercise after you have a baby.

So where do we start?

How do we know what is safe?

Joining me to answer these questions is Rosie Purdue from Hatched House in Melbourne.

Get to know Rosie:

Rosie is one of only a few physiotherapists in Australia with post-graduate qualifications in Pelvic Floor & Continence Physiotherapy and Sports Medicine. She is also a Hypnobirthing Australia Practitioner and clinical Pilates instructor.

Rosie has a special interest in treating incontinence, prolapse, pelvic and sexual pain and her favourite; pre and postnatal exercise & sport. She is a published writer and has a paper Exercise After Pregnancy in the Australian Journal of General Practice.

Outside of her work, her family is her world. She plays hockey and likes to make ceramics.

What we discussed:

  • What is Hatched House and where is the clinic located?
  • I know personally that I felt a bit nervous about getting back to exercise after birth, is this common?
  • What are some other common challenges women face when returning to exercise after having a baby?
  • What are 3 tips you’d give to a mother who's given birth recently who's keen to get back to exercise?
  • At what stage postnatally would your recommend a women see a pelvic health physio - and is it ideal for every women to see one postnatally?
  • Are there any particular types of exercise you’d recommend in that first 6-12 months post birth?

41. This One Thing Is Keeping You Stuck

41. This One Thing Is Keeping You Stuck

Today i'm reclaiming the mic for a solo episode on the one thing that is keeping you stuck from improving your baby's sleep.

Stigma.

There is HUGE stigma surrounding seeking help for your baby's sleep, settling methods, routines and basically anything sleep related! In my experience, this is the biggest thing preventing parents from reaching out for assistance and making changes to improve their baby's sleep. Today we are having a deep chat about this. I'm going to encourage you to think, reflect and really examine how you're allowing stigma to impact your decisions within your parenting journey.

Here's what I chatted about:

Stigma and its influence [00:01:36] The concept of stigma and how it can prevent parents from seeking help for their baby's sleep issues.
Negative and unfair beliefs [00:02:51] The definition of stigma.
Forming your own beliefs [00:08:46] Forming your own beliefs and making decisions based on what you need.
Zooming out and focusing on your own needs [00:12:18] Taking a wider view
Designing your own life [00:13:26] Reflect on what brings you happiness and make conscious choices to design the life you want, including how you navigate your baby's sleep.
The opinions of others are not important [00:19:25] Not letting the stigma and opinions of others dictate your parenting decisions, and the importance of making choices that align with your own values and goals.
The indecisiveness and stigma [00:24:43] Importance of reflecting on your own needs and values when making decisions, and how indecisiveness and stigma can keep you stuck.
The one thing that is keeping you stuck is stigma [00:24:43] Stigma is the main factor preventing progress and positive change with your baby's sleep (and what leads to overwhelm and inconsistency).

31. Are Your Baby's Black Out Blinds Non Toxic? With Leash from @mahaloecoblinds

31. Are Your Baby's Black Out Blinds Non Toxic? With Leash from @mahaloecoblinds

We hear soo much about non toxic, eco friendly products for our littles....BUT have you ever considered the black out blinds you are using in your baby's sleep space? What are they made from? Are they safe? Are they toxin free?

Joining me on the podcast today is the founder of Mahalo Eco Blinds™ - Leash.

Mahalo Eco Blinds was born with the sole purpose to create a safe and calm sleeping environment for you and your children. These eco blockout blinds are non toxic, safe for our earth and will add lovely aesthetic to your little one's room. Leash was not satisfied with the blinds available on the market and found these plastic/vinyl blinds also released a chemical smell, which we learned to be VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds). These chemicals are released into the air our babes breath while sleeping. This was unacceptable for her and her family. Leash has created the worlds first patented eco blockout blinds from a non-toxic, compostable material, especially for you and your family.

In this chat we talk about:

The journey to designing black out blinds and founding Mahalo Eco Blinds.
Her life as a Mumma and Biz owner
A typical day in her life currently
Her background as a Naturopath

I personally use Mahalo Eco Blinds in Hazel's room and recommend them to all of my clients. I love how easy they are to take down during your little one's awake time and to quickly pop back up before sleep.

20. Why Awake Windows Are Both Good And Bad

20. Why Awake Windows Are Both Good And Bad

This is absolutely the topic I am MOST frequently asked about. For all ages from birth through to toddler years.
Awake windows are such a source of anxiety for parents - there are sooo many suggested awake windows on social media, in guides and books etc.
How are you meant to know what is actually the right information?
You may be following awake windows and just feel like the day is messy, unpredictable and frustrating.
I thought I would shed some light on why you might feel this way and what you can do about it.

18. The 10 Most Common Things That Parents Want Out Of Sleep And Settling Support

18. The 10 Most Common Things That Parents Want Out Of Sleep And Settling Support

This week I had a bit of an 'ah - ha' moment and honestly, it's cemented in my mind how different my approach is when it comes to supporting parents with sleep and settling. It's also the reason why Let's Sleep families have incredible results (and why these positive changes last in the long term).
When I chat to parents in DM's or on 15 min discovery calls, I ask them a few initial questions.
Two of these questions are:What do you want? What are you missing the most in your life right now?
Many families I chat to that are experiencing sleep issues are feeling a lot of guilt and honestly report feeling quite uneasy and uncomfortable seeking sleep help. This makes total sense - there is a LOT of stigma in the baby sleep world. Conflicting advice, strong opinions and beliefs all contribute to this stigma. You only want the best for your baby. You want to make sure they are loved, cared for and want to attend to their needs promptly. This is a given. All parents want the above things for their baby. Sleep support should not get in the way of that at all.
When I chat to families - I often hear that guilt in their voice when talking about their baby's sleep issues and how they'd like to see them change.
This week in a 15 minute discovery call, I was chatting to a Mum and heard this in her voice. I asked her for a minute to put the guilt and her baby's sleep to the side for a minute.
I asked her a simple question...What do YOU want? What do YOU need to feel happy? What is missing for you right now?
Listening to her answers - it was like a weight was lifted from her shoulders. She was provided a safe space to express what she needed to feel happy.
I responded with 'let's make that happen'.
It was during this call that I had a bit 'ah ha' moment. This is how Let's Sleep differs. It's how I have always approached sleep and settling support, without even realising it.
My secret sauce is that I ALWAYS start with YOU (the parents).
Why? Because when we get down on paper what you NEED more of in your life, we can make a sleep plan that is tailored to helping you achieve those goals.
When you know that this sleep plan will help you achieve all the things you're missing most in your life - you're going to be SUPER motivated to sticking to your sleep plan!
When you stick to that plan for a week or two and tick off your sleep goals - you're going to LOVE your sleep plan and will stick to it (on an ongoing basis!!) because it's helped you live a life you absolutely love.
So, I am incredibly excited that in this episode - i'm sharing 10 of the most COMMON answers I hear in response to that simple question ..... 'what do you want?'.

16. How To Handle Judgement In Parenting & Strengthening Your Parenting 'Team' with Louisa from @mamapsychology

16. How To Handle Judgement In Parenting & Strengthening Your Parenting 'Team' with Louisa from @mamapsychology

This is the second episode in our perinatal mental health mini series - these episodes will drop over the next few months 👀
Louisa is a perinatal child and family psychologist. She's also a Mum to 2 boys. She specialises in perinatal anxiety and mood, attachment and bonding and emotions in motherhood. I was drawn to Louisa's IG page Mama Psychology because of the realness. Louisa talks about the challenges and wonders of being a Mum. She normalises that Motherhood is amazing but insanely hard at the same time. The constraint, burnout, guilt, feelings of wanting to escape, frustration, rage, anxiety, overstimulation, intrusive thoughts and relentlessness of early motherhood. I love that she normalises that if you are finding it hard - you aren't doing it wrong, it's simply because it is HARD.
Some stats for you:

1 in 5 women will struggle with depression and anxiety postpartum.
For 40% of these women, symptoms begin in pregnancy. For first time mothers, depression, stress and anxiety PEAK at 4-5 years POSTpartum

This signifies that mental health challenges are not well supported for women (and men) in the early years of parenting and this continues and even WORSENS over time.
The questions covered in today's chat have come directly from the Let's Sleep community.

In today's episode we cover:

🌵 What are some strategies to deal with 'judgement' from others about the choices you make as as a parent (eg choice around sleep, managing behaviour, parenting styles etc?)
🌵 Comparing your child or parenting style with other peoples experiences.
🌵Strategies for when we find ourselves comparing our lives to others.
🌵 What are some ways we can support our partners with this 'new baby' change?
🌵 How can we overcome 'partner jealousy' especially around breastfeeding?
🌵 Is there any preparation parents can do in pregnancy or the newborn period to set up expectations / discuss what is important to each other?

15. What Are Your Priorities? And Why You Need To Say Them Out Loud.

This is our FIRST episode for 2023! Happy New Year, Merry Christmas!

The start of the year is always a great opportunity to set fresh intentions - contemplate what you want LESS of in the new year and what you want MORE of.
Today i'm sharing with you a tactic that you can use in pregnancy or at any stage in your parenting journey. It's actually super helpful to repeat this tactic multiples times when you need a reminder of what's important to you and your family

We cover:
🌵 What is actually important to you as an individual, parent and for your family?
🌵 Actually prioritising these 'cup filling' activities to ensure you feel happy and fulfilled in life
🌵 How running on empty can lead to burnout in parenting
🌵 Make a short list of your 'non negotiable' priorities that you know are crucial for you to feel happy and well rested.
🌵 Jazz shares her personal 'non negotiable' list and how she made a reality throughout her parenting journey so far.
🌵 Why poor sleep really can derail your cup filling activities and lead to burnout.

Sophie (a fellow Nurse who loves routine and planning) and Tom are first time parents to 10 month old Angus (oh and don't forget their fur baby Kelpie 'Blue'). Around 4 months of age, sleep wen't completely out the window - he was waking every 60 minutes overnight and was catnapping in the day (20-30 min naps). They were waiting for sleep to improve and it just didn't - which led them to get some help.

In today's podcast episode we delve into how our Let’s Sleep client Soph and her family saw things change once they sought help.

Here is what we covered:

🌵Sophie and Tom's experience with Angus catnapping, only settling for Mum and waking frequently overnight and how this led them to seek sleep help.
🌵What led them to take the leap and seek help
🌵How poor sleep was leading to everything else going out the window like exercise, time as a couple, meal prep, housework and the impact this had on their family.
🌵Sophie's anxiety leading up to going to bed at night because of Angus's unpredictable sleep patterns.
🌵How Angus went from a catnapper and frequent night waker to sleeping in his cot happily, taking a 2 hour + nap and sleeping through overnight with 1-2 feeds.

"I don't want to co sleep anymore BUT I don't know how to move my baby back to their cot"

If you have asked yourself ANY of these questions or had any of these thoughts cross your mind, this episode with the lovely Brooke is just for YOU!

Brooke is a first time mum and a teacher and started to 'hit rock bottom' with Eli's sleep when he was around 10 weeks of age. It would take her 30-45 minutes to rock or feed him to sleep for a nap only for him to be awake again 30 minutes later. Not to mention the 2 hourly wake ups overnight (or even more frequent) - Brooke and her hubby Aron were running on empty and needed help.

Into today's podcast episode we delve into how Let’s Sleep client Brooke and how things changed for her family.

Here is what we covered:

🌵Brooke and Aron's experience with Eli catnapping, only settling for Mum and waking frequently overnight and how this led them to seek sleep help.
🌵What led them to take the leap and seek help
🌵How Eli went from a serial catnapper and frequent night waker to sleeping in his cot happily, taking a 2 hour + nap and sleeping through overnight with 1-2 feeds.
🌵How this transformation has positively impacted their parenting journey and increased their enjoyment of parenting immensely.
🌵Why Brooke and Aron can now travel confidently, not stress about Eli's sleep and have full nights of sleep even when they're on holidays.

10. Think Sleep And Settling Support Means Staying Home For 2 Weeks? Listen To This.

I hear this ALL the time from parents. You're putting off seeking help because you think you need to be home for 2 full weeks while you get sleep sorted. This is an incredibly common misconception.

Your experience of sleep and settling support will be quite the opposite! Most families want to be out and about, offering naps on the go and have that predictability (with some flexibility!). I help you right from the start to make this a reality.

If you've been putting off seeking help because you can't pick a 2 week period that you'll be able to be home all the time - listen to this!

How on earth do we figure out when the ideal bedtime is for our baby so that they aren't undertired or overtired?

This episode will give you the framework to find that sweet spot for bedtime!
I've included a client story in this episode from a family I recently worked with. Mum Emma shares their experience going from frequent night wakes and feeling out of control with no day routine with her 9.5 month old Orlando...to feeling calm, well rested and empowered. I know this one will hit home with so many of you.
