In today’s episode your host, Ackerman and Fern talk about the aesthetics of an affiliate and how important. They’re covering the overlook, layout to the organization to how clean it is. To emphasise how important that is today. With wifi, how to make your members want to stay more and really why if you have showers you should also have a towels service. These may seem like the little things that don’t make a big difference but they do leave that last first impression.

Today listeners, you are in for a Fern Friday special treat! Fern is going solo with is own thesis about how fit is your box?- Now Fern isn’t talking about if you would have won the affiliate cup, back when that was things. He discusses how “fit” is your business. As Crossfit, we like to be about to have metrics that are measurable, compared and retested. If we see a weakness in ourselves or our athletes we’d make a plan to fix, Fern idea is why aren’t we doing that for our business too? Meaning there’s a weakness in our business, then make a plan to fix, instead of sticking out head in the sand about. Fern’s trying to move away from the idea that because a box has been open longer or has more member that means it’s successful. When in reality these are gyms are struggling to keep the light. Fern’s very good at breaking down the aspect into very good Crossfit metaphors.

On today’s episode Jason Ackerman chats with Nicole Race, you might recognize Nicole from her viral post on Gym Lunch, which she is no longer part of. Along with Nicole disaffiliate from Crossfit in 2017 moved to calling her's and her husband's mirco - gym Elevate. Nicole example in this episode how she feels disaffiliating has allowed her to sever her community and members better, by stepping way form those high skill movements like the snatch and cleans along with high skill gymnastic movement like muscles up. Nicole felt that they weren’t serving the CrossFit community and would send to other boxes, as they were no longer in aline with Crossfit. This a good episode on how it important to do things for the right reason, and how that’s what matters.

On today episode Fern sits down with longtime friends Jack Ryan and his business partner Eric Heup, they own Fair Winds CrossFit. They come from two entirely different backgrounds, with opposite skill sets. They went from the coach-athlete relationship to partners in their affiliate. It’s rare to see a business partner in a box nowadays who aren’t married or related in some ways. As that’s a difficult relationship with equal business partners, they’ve found a way to make it work. They also discuss better ways to communicate with the members in an affiliate that help foster the community and create buy-in. It all starts with their gym values: Be curious, Be consistent, Be Courageous. They run so much a podcast for their gym and fitness field trip which are pretty cool. It’s long and informative episode make sure to take notes.

As Affiliate begins to broaden our outreach to try to work with the "underserved" populations it is important for coaches to be able to meet those clients wherever they are in that journey. In this episode, your hosts Jason and Todd talk about the early Christmas present we as the Crossfit community are getting… the first-ever, and will probably never happen again the Second open of the year. I’ll wait while you clap and applause, and the screams of excitement … Nope, none? That I thought. But thank you so much, Dave, for this present that just keeps on giving. As Todd puts it “It’s the most wonder terrible time of the year”. This episode is meant to help Box owners to give you ideas how to not only run the open at your box also how to keep everyone on that high for the second time this year. You’ll hear some story whereby it’s gotten out of hand, and a little be crazy. But also why it’s important for your members and crossfit community to be part of the worldwide competition, we all know 99% of people doing it are not going to the games or Sacutional? The guys will explain. Todd uses the open in a slightly different way that he frames open, which as has been super successful. At the end of the day, it’s part of the culture that we as Crossfiter just do the open, it creates memories and it’s really a time we all push ourselves hard.

In this episode, Jason Ackerman sits down the half of the Buttery Bro. If you haven’t heard of Heber or Buttery Bro you must be living under a rock. He was one of the driving force behind the Crossfit Games documentaries, but what's more, exciting if the work that he’s down since being let go from Crossfit when we got rid of their Media Team. Heber and long-time buddy Marston Sawyers teamed up to make the Buttery Bros which is bringing the Buttery content about the Games, Sanctionals, and all the athletes. They just to be seen to be everywhere right now bring out the best content for us the community to not only follow wants to go on but also in a fun entertaining way. Heber is a great person who is just following his passion with his best buddy making great content for the community don’t forget to check them out.

In this episode, Jason Ackerman sits down with Adam Tar, who he met about a month ago at a Level 2. Adam is the owner and head coach at Crossfit Northport, wit his wife Sarah Tarr. What really impressed Ackerman about Adam was what he is doing from a business perspective within his Box. Adam has a Master of Bussision Admisionton, which he stated has not only allowed him to be the most expensive box in his area but also have a solid membership base of 100 members. Adam takes a very hard approach within his box, where he coaches 90% of classes, has very hard but ultimately fair internship program, and hold value in contacts to ensure his business stay alive. They discuss all of that but also topic like Grandingfathering in, going to court over contracts and my EFT should be your membership method of collecting. This may seem like some hard issue to face for many of us as box owners but Ackerman and Adam example why they are so important mostly because it’s allowing you to ensure your future.

In this episode, Fern picks the brains of the founders of Street Parking Julian and Miranda Alcaraz which they started in 2016. Miranda – after 15 years in the fitness industry, 8 years on CrossFit HQ seminar staff, and 8 years competing in CrossFit. Julian – after 10 years in the fitness industry, and 5 years competing in CrossFit. Both having trained and competed at the highest level – the CrossFit Games – they found themselves in new territory – busy. Julian was running a business and Miranda had settled into a full-time job. At the time the couple was dating and lived over an hour away from each other. They noticed something interesting. The workouts they would post on their social media from HOME – with simple equipment – was what people who followed them responded to most.
An idea was formed. Post the simple workouts we are doing at home – so people can follow along. Charge a fee that is totally doable for most people. Create a community where we can push and motivate each other. The first-ever workouts were posted in November 2016 (just a few days before Miranda found out she was pregnant with their baby boy). Memberships went up for sale the week before New Years. Within the first month, Street Parking had 700 Members.
As Street Parking continued to grow and the members were posting about how this had changed the game for them to be able to see success at home. The fire that Julian and Miranda felt to provide the best programming, community and service possible grew as well. With their own lives about to change forever with the birth of their son – they knew that this was something they wanted to dedicate themselves to 100%. Miranda left her full-time job. Julian sold his business. They went all in the business and they have one of the most successful online programmes out there.

In this episode, all of your hosts Ackerman, Fern and Todd discuss a topic that faces every athlete more than once in the Affiliate, people who shave reps or more than likely you yourself have done it more than once. It’s a very controversial and likely a touchy subject for most. They drive into how they dealt with athletes who have done it and repeatedly, also looked into the flip side of let just be honest they just lost count and other situations whereby the athletes internal scaled because they’d bite off more than they can chew.

In this fun interview, Joe talks about turning away drop-ins that want to do "their own thing," maintaining class structure with so many strangers hitting class, and finding the balance of not jeopardizing the "best hour of the day" for his members. In this episode, Jason Ackerman sits down with Amy West MD. Amy is a genuinely wonderful human being who is working with Crossfit and Crossfit health to make people healthier and help as many people as possible. She found earlier on the push back from her co-workers by saying this like “CrossFit is bad” “crossfit will injure you” to lessen ten years on from when she first start and see this more neutral stance which is a good thing. They discuss the influences on the medical industry, which are creating this problem. Along with the ideas, Greg Glassman has been pushing most in most recent years.

In this episode, Ackerman sits down with Andrew Frezza who is one of the owners of CrossFit Palm Beach in Jupiter, FL. Which has been open for close to 7 years, last year brought in over seven figures in profits and has reached that 500 members. For a box that is out of the heavily density populated area is amazing. This may be a surprise as you’ve probably never heard of either himself or this brother Tony Frezza or Crossfit Palm Beach if you live outside of Florida area. This episode really highlights what it takes to make your box grow as a business and how you don’t need to be on Staff to do that or have a Games athletes training at your gym. What it becomes clear from Andrew was how much he's cared about his members having the best hour of their day had helped the box grow to where it is today.

In this episode, both of the host Jackerman and Fren sit down and talk about the muscle-up. Which most people haven’t even heard of until they walk into the box, and is viewed by many when you get your Muscle-up you get your “Crossfit Card”.
The muscle-up (MU) is a movement that transitions from a hanging position below the rings to a supported position, arms extended, above the rings. It is a combination movement containing both a pull-up and a dip. Far from a contrivance, the muscle-up is hugely functional. With a muscle-up, you’ll be able to surmount any object on which you can get a finger hold–if you can touch it, you can get up on it. The value here for survival, police, firefighter, and military use is impossible to overstate.
They discuss the practical application of the MU in classes. From teaching it to scaling it appropriately, to helping members improve and string multiple together. You are only as limited as your imagination. Throughout this episode we dip into other topics, such as the art of coaching, keeping classes of different abilities engaged, and of course, we share plenty of funny and entertaining muscle-up stories.

You are in pain and instead of getting it taken care of or resting, you use support equipment to allow you to exercise.
You require pain killers (OTC or Prescription) in order to exercise without pain.
TED is a real condition often misunderstood to be a healthy habit, but it is actually as dangerous as habits widely accepted to be poor for your health.
If you have signs of TED, speak with your coach immediately.
Ok, Sean Pastuch made that whole thing up. But, if as you were reading it you were thinking “fuck, this is me”, you have a problem, and you should talk with your coach immediately, and listen to this episode.

Matt and Fern break down apparel sales in the affiliate from start to finish. Forever Fierce works with more than 500 independent gyms. They have solved most of the issues that affiliates have with selling apparel. How should we sell retail? Should we sell retail? How much stock should you carry? What should we charge? How many designs should we carry? How frequently should we order new shirts? Should we do more than shirts? Who does my designs? Who is in charge of retail?
If you've ever asked yourself any of these questions then you need to listen to this episode.

Todd Widman got hooked on CrossFit when he was a captain in the Marine Corps. As a flowmaster on CrossFit’s Seminar Staff, he says he finds his job highly rewarding. Likewise, he encourages everyone in the community to give coaching a try before shouldering the responsibility of owning an affiliate.
“When you give people the power of doing something—a pull-up, a push press, a squat, whatever it is—they figure out that they can do that by their will. They can then start to take care of this,” Widman says, pointing with both index fingers to his head.
He adds: “I love that stuff because they realize that they’re still in control of their life, that it’s not just all downhill for the rest of their life. It’s shocking and humbling and beautiful.”

Dr. Sean Pastuch founded Active Life because he believed that the world deserves better solutions than the modern medical model can provide.
Sean believes the current medical model manages physical pain without considering the emotional ramifications of the proposed intervention. Too many people have heard from their doctor "You have to stop doing _____, Playing ______, going _______," and it's unacceptable. We take an oath to "do no harm", but how is harm defined. Dr. Sean believes it is harmful to tell someone they have to stop doing what gives them great joy so that they can eliminate the subjective discomfort that we call pain. So he came up with a replacement, a solution.
Active Life is the only company in the world helping thousands of people to get out of pain WITHOUT going to the doctor or missing the gym.

Conor Murphy was born and raised in Washington State, where he spent 10 years in Spokane, before moving to Gig Harbor. After two consecutive podium finishes at the CrossFit Regionals, he signed a contract to become a sponsored athlete for Reebok. People are afraid to do CrossFit, not because it's dangerous but because they can't do the movements. People see pull-ups, HSPUs, muscle-ups and think, "I can't do that, so I can't do CrossFit."
That's where scaling comes into play.
In this episode we teach you how to scale well. The goal of scaling is to preserve the intended stimulus. we have seen that done right and we have seen that gone horribly wrong. Listen to how Jason made a 65 year old pass out because he didn't scale appropriately.
When it comes to scaling you are only limited by your creativity. Don't be that coach that whenever you have double unders in a workout you simply tell people "twice as many singles." That's not good scaling and it's not good coaching.
In this episode, Ackerman and Fern will teach you how to scale effectively, discuss common mistakes, and even talk about when it's appropriate to scale up.
"Words are useless, actions are all we have."
