Cassettes, Boothville - January 8, 1978

Sunday, January 8, 1978. Helen and Clarence just came back from 50th anniversary of the Malledine's. Tony and May. Arguing with Clarence about it. Had plenty to eat and drink... Even had Diet drinks for them. Uncle Otha not doing well. Clarence gets on and talks. "ElvLis" tribute (removed). Uncle Carroll Wright doing ok. "Looked like it was gonna fixed to snow." Clarence says a few words. Enjoyed the party. MawMaw finishes updating Carolyn's work schedule, etc.

Cassettes, Tembagapura - John Ellenberger

Sunday, November 27, 1977. Christian Missionary and Anthropologist John D. Ellenberger speaks in Tembagapura, Indonesia. Talks about the Dream of the people of Irian including the Amungme and beyond. Expectations. Then a Leader rises up and makes it all reality. Movement. Leader carries people into the movement. Disillusionment. Return to the Dream. Primitive society is all interlinked. Reciprocity is first value. Equality. Everyone does a bit of everything and therefore same resources (or "wealth"). Everyone does the same thing. Supernatural. Some tribes will rub two testicles together for luck or blessings. Everything comes from a supernatural source. Impact of Western Society on primitive cultures. They expect goods to be shared and when they aren't shared, things fall apart. When is the Golden Age coming? Things that really count are Spiritual. "Peace doesn't have two fingers but one - meaning one way."

Interview, Thomas Storesund - Part One

Interview, Thomas Storesund - Part One

Fellow 1990s' BYU student, longtime friend and Norwegian Thomas Storesund shares his thoughts on Norway. Thomas is the reason I had a 26 year career and moved to Los Angeles and quite frankly the reason I met my wife and grew a family. Thomas covers his early years in his family of three kids and his love and participation in soccer as a youth. Much is discussed on Norway's make-up, policies and their both failures and successes. Some historical examples shed light on some of the reasons behind the not-so-magic ways of the Kingdom of Norway - extremely wealthy nation on many levels especially with so many natural resources.

Cassettes, Boothville - December 11-15, 1977

Lillian Scarabin (Pompy's wife). Pompy still keeps her locked up in the trailer and haven't seen Mrs. Adolph in about 3 months. He's stays down at his mama and daddy's place. Hurry up and get home (to Marilyn). Weighs 90 lbs. Pompy said to send Josh to him. Uncle Pompy wanted to adopt; send Kessie too. Merry Christmas from Lil. Helen Mae Wright "MawMaw" Adolph; Clarence Henry Adolph, Sr. talks. Thursday, December 15, 1977. He went to Port Sulphur because he wasn't feeling well and the doctor said it might be a 24 hour virus. He saw Mr. Tom and that Blackie is doing alright. Tom has a daughter in Australia. So many people trying to go that they couldn't go all at one time. Really crowded. Hope they aren't too crowded for Scarabins to come back, etc. Helen Mae was so happy to talk to Marilyn previous night. Hope they enjoyed Cairns (Jason was baptized that week). MawMaw said everyone forget her birthday except MawMaw. Excited about the Evans coming. Mrs. Lizzy wishes a Merry Christmas. Paul has lost a lot of weight and shake his feet once more like the teenagers. Paul and Allen are still little warts. Emmett Adolph gives some well wishes, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Gail Portie and Brent Edward Portie talk about Christmas and what Santa is bringing. Blake got a package. Getting a jumping horse and a bunch of other junk. Hope Santa can find us over in Indonesia. Gail gets upset seeing all the letters on her route going to others but not her. Eddie was supposed to clean the house that day but didn't. She got Wendy to clean it one day. Hope Lil' Kessie is doing okay and she's walking already, MawMaw says. Kenneth had a party that Gail and Eddie went to go. MawMaw and PawPaw invited too but won't go. Two hogs and a cow to eat and BBQ goat. Got her a black velvet blazer and "will look like a cow in it." Someone is suing H&B for getting thrown out of an airboat. Sure don't need friends like that. She figures Marilyn and D.D. are partying all the time now. Brent still giving trouble and she's "about to brain him." Brent had an old sucker he wanted Gail to have. Does Deron still have his little girlfriend? Jason got glasses after teasing Craig with his glasses. Sure hope the rest of them don't have to get glasses. Still going to ceramics. Helen Mae back on and said Wendy came over and didn't talk on the tape. Weather is beautiful and back steps are finally looking great. Enjoyed Mrs. Lizzy's visit. Helen kept Steve and Brian while Wendy took John Dirk to the doctor. Brian sure is a good little baby just laying there. Going to have to let KAGY help her out. They've really got a lot of songs about "Elvlis" Presley. Clarence is moving around more. 14:25 CT. Evans are on their way and got to Alexandria apparently. Helen can't think of a thing to say. Everyone's okay and "all of that jazz." She's going to let KAGY finish. She loves everyone. More to Me by Charlie Pride. Helen says goodbye again. Merry Christmas as Blue Bayou (Crystal Gayle) plays. She says Santa will come to us in Indonesia first because "it's closer to the North Pole (it's not) and to tell Santa that we have a MawMaw and PawPaw that's waiting for him.

Cassettes, Boothville - February 15-17, 1978

Clarence talks then plays some music (removed). MawMaw said they had the music on all day and tried to get the Take This Job And Shove It song but it never came on. PawPaw didn't get MawMaw any Valentine and she didn't need anything. Just fattening anyway. Aunt Yvonne went on a diet on Monday then everyone brought her a bunch of candy. Carolyn taking Craig to nose doctor then going to a show. Told Wendy she'd keep her little boy. No use to take that poor little boy out and get him sick again. PawPaw out planting fig trees he got from Vernon. Gail gave her two records of the "Strutter Brothers." Have to pay about $2100 in taxes by April 15. Sucks to pay that much in taxes. MawMaw says if D.D. is going to make fun of her tapes then she wont' talk anymore and like D.D. says, "nothing to talk about." Talk to Aunt Beulah and that Uncle Jim had to go back in the hospital. Otha was going back in the hospital for pain. Uncle Carroll and Aunt Ima were supposed to go see him and call MawMaw collect but never did. Ernie "Pompy" Scarabin gives an update with Lillian in the background. Said James wrecked his truck; it's totaled. Have to talk to Brian to get things cleared up. Lil is fat as ever and he is too. Visiting Helen Mae and she had made some kind of apple cake. Clifff and he have been catching some fish. Johnny came back down. Lillian said she heard everything Pompy said was a lie and everything hangs over. He's a big ol' baby and weighs 236 lbs. She's been drinking all day. Gail Portie said she'll be sending something for Kessie. Eddie and she didn't have too much fun at Mardi Gras for all the money they spent. Just sit there and Eddie won't dance fast with her and she likes to dance fast. Job is getting the best of her. Brent says he misses her and wants to stay home. She doesn't know how to handle Brent. Blake gets bad too. Blake got a haircut and got pictures in their cowboy outfits. Blake wouldn't let the man take pictures. Gail is so tired and sounds like Carolyn always complaining. Blake talks more than Brent. Sometimes they can be so nice and sweet and play together nicely. Hopefully, she'll have three days off for Washington's Birthday. Carolyn "Sister" might come clean but prefers Wendy do it because Wendy could use the money more. Helen Mae talking about someone who didn't stop to see them. Uncle and Port Sulphur High School Coach Bill Evans on the radio. JV team is 5-1 in the district and future is bright. Mr. Yuratich appeared to interview him. Helen Mae February 17, 1978, woke up dizzy but feeling better and will "live over it." Called Aunt Beulah and Uncle Otha at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont and still sick as can be. Hadn't heard from Uncle Jim. Someone will call her, she's hoping. Wendy wouldn't talk last night. Wendy Guidry came over for the first time in months. Around Christmas, Mrs. Wally said Guidry's had their jukebox so loud. Hadn't heard from Sister (Carolyn). Gail stopped by and she did hear from Wendy. Gail didn't bring any "dadburn" mail. Rocky and his girl are still getting along well and Clarence fixed their oven. Josh can't go visit MawMaw now that his bike is broken (got run over by Rudy Harsono by accident). They were sick because they don't know Kessie's size. If they'd sent her "footprint" or something. D.D. might get another chance to make fun of MawMaw on the tape. Helen Mae says Clarence went to Buras to see if B&G had glass to replace windows that kids shot out. Gail made requests and still won't play Paycheck song. Feeling less dizzy than day before. Supposed to keep little Davy while Bill and Jerolyn go to a basketball game at church. Uncle Ernest brought Clarence a peach tree. If they come back, Helen Mae figures she'll lay down and die and it's painful missing everyone. Expecting all us kids to stomp, yell and curse so we don't go back and tell parents to come back and they have job over in the good ol' USA. MawMaw laying down the law and we the kids must plan a mutiny.

Cassettes, Boothville - November 25-December 1, 1977

November 25, 1977. Rolling Stones TV special and Mike and Craig will tell the best parts to record. Music (removed). November 26, 1977. Clarence wishes Marilyn a Happy Birthday. Lisa Lynn Adolph has been helping Aunt Wendy with Brian. December 5 will be Lisa's birthday. Lisa said Mike and Craig have been riding the go-cart. Becky is doing good and she's 2 and getting big. Brent went to town at Oakwood for Santa Claus. Lisa tells story about a man in an old-looking truck and a blue carpet. Two grown-up men in the blue car bumping into the old truck. Car trying to chase the truck and it hit two cars and almost hit two teenagers. Lots of classmates at her house. Cherie got all her stuff, dresser drawers and night stand. Lots of juicy oranges down here. Lisa will be 11 in December and wishes they'd be down for her birthday. Slept by Aunt Wendy's twice and Aunt Gail's three times. Blake is digging in the garbage. Nice church there and really like it up in Harvey. Gives address. Got pictures of Kessie. Blake it getting so fat but playing real nice. Mike will be a teenager next year. Craig loves riding go-carts. Pulling up all their trees because they're getting so brown. Getting a fence because Becky goes out in the street and scares her mama (Gwen). Lisa's aunt is worried too. "Pameler Ann" says a couple of words. November 30, 1977. Wendy and Larry went to get their Christmas tree but no good ones were available. Three Christmas Specials airing that night (11/30/1977) then when Christmas comes "they won't have nothing... boring as can be." MawMaw disgusted she's been talking and forgot all about her dadgum dishes. Hadn't seen Ernie "Pompy" and Lil lately. Johnny, Lil's son, came back down there from Florida. He'll go get his car in Florida after Christmas. She''s got two "zinks" full. Plays Christmas music (removed). Plum disgusted because looks like tape will never run out. Has no more news around there and been raining and turning colder at some point. Telling Deron and Jason to be careful going up and down those mountains. Wants Josh to come see them and see all the Christmas stuff. More music (removed). Still disgusted tape is so long. More Christmas music (removed). Johnny Cash special about to come on (not included). December 1, 1977. New Drive-in at Delta Bank and lo and behold she was the first one through and got her picture taken. Had to "rejster." Pat Collins took her picture. Glad she had her haircut and saw Mr. Ellston and all that humbug. Jay Freeman got married.

Cassettes, Tembagapura - July 25-29, 1976

Sunday morning, July 25, 1976. Not too many people at church day before. No Scotch tape over there. Jason's mouth never stops - either singing or talking. Encourages Helen and Clarence to go on a vacation and hopes PawPaw's toe is better. July 26, 1976. Jason working on needlepoint. Deron got a $.25 comic book. Takes so long to get mail. Can't believe what happened with the Annual back in Boothville.

Cassettes, Boothville - January 27-28, 1977

Thursday, January 27, 1977. Helen Mae Wright Adolph. Gail and Wendy going to town. Bad news is people stayed in Marilyn's trailer one week. Good news is that it was rented back out the same day. Brent comes in and wanted to stay with Steven too at MawMaws. Wally's moved in and they are church members. Daughter is a beautician and going to cut MawMaw's hair because "it's going 'wald.'" Mike and Lisa Adolph came down. She had some really good shrimp spaghetti. She priced some girl dresses and thinks the prices are "ridiklis." Brent and Steve talk. Friday January 28, 1977. Wendy asks if Marilyn misses "breakfast, lunch and supper at MawMaw's." Larry is still working for Packard and works every single day: 0430-530, catches boat at 6a and gets home about 1700-1730. Jerolyn is pregnant (with David). They're so excited about the baby but Quentin who says J.D. Fitzgerald is his brother. She's gotta go pick up Steve. Gail and Wendy talk more at MawMaw's house. Neighbor Jean Meyers five months pregnant and she's 39 with a 16 year old.

Cassettes, Boothville - May 09-12, 1976

Jerolyn Sue Adolph Evans. Quentin Scott got poison ivy from picking blackberries. Jerolyn is the Primary First Counselor and she doesn't know what to do. Linda Talbot, the President. Quentin thought his mom was literally "lost." No one will go with Jerolyn because they're all too busy. Wendy and Larry Fitzgerald have such a nice place. Quentin slept at MawMaw's house. Misses Deron P. Scarabin and only has Rachel Guidry to hang out. They sing Rhinestone Cowboy a bit. Bill Evans said MawMaw said everyone missed church earlier but her and now Uncle Bill said MawMaw didn't go to church. Some in the branch should be more responsible with church duties. MawMaw is Quentin's Primary teacher. Sports banquet and Bill got something special and "Jerolyn hasn't matured yet." They gave all the coaches "Coach of the Year" plaques. Mikelson decided to go to Nashville and make $21K. Bill's dad retired and sold everything but one tractor. Have to get out of the California house by June 20. All his parents' bills paid and no debt so they should be fine. Jerolyn said she might be "fat" by the time Scarabins return. Jerolyn has to have a CB. Quentin is Steve Austin but now Evil Knievel and Jerolyn is Disco Lady. Bill refuses. Helen on Mother's Day. Kids had good time on Wendy's slab. Clarence sprained his ankle helping Larry move. Handful of "tomaters." Uncle Nicky gave some cucumbers. Many beans and squash is great. Eggplant and bell peppers everywhere. Clarence will start working on sewer line. Helen feels like Quentin wanting us to talk back on the tape. Helen is out of "draws." Loves to hear from Scarabins. Wendy's backyard is so pretty. Only bad part is rain piles up in one spot. MawMaw called to be Primary Teacher and Secretary. Accepted Teacher position but refused the Secretary position because she can't write. Go up and down the steps forty times a day but rarely sees neighbors. Twice she talked without recording. Clarence "hollering." They pay the bills for the Scarabins as they come in. Gail had to work so Helen is watching Brent Edward Portie. Larry had fallen down with baby (John Dirk). Baby was fine but Larry was banged up and bruised. Emmett Adolph giving well wishes. Yvonne got a CB radio and real proud of it, carrying on with Helen Mae. Drinking a cold beer after coming from the pumping station. Yvonne Adolph sends well wishes. Everyone giggling "trying to talk to the stupid thing." Bad weather. Yvonne is the Lollipop, the name Marilyn gave Annie Adolph Chapman. Janelle Adolph gets on and gives an update on shrimping and how Mrs. Lizzy is enjoying her new job. Said her doctor going to get on her about weight gain. Sally's been sick. E.J. and Sue looked at Marilyn's trailer and tired waiting on it. Carolyn and Kyle Bergeron. Carolyn cracks up over Marilyn's grocery experience. Said Gail is still sitting and Craig made a home run in baseball. Horace said they just made errors. Kyle gets on and says Mrs. Hernandez will write to Jason. Kyle's keeping bikes clean and can't wait for us to come home. Craig updates on baseball and how much fun he's having. Horace has flu. Wendy has moved in her trailer. Don't let D.D. get beat up by the rocks. Edna Adolph updates. Fresh peaches and going to visit Pam and baby. Everyone has CBs down there. She's Hunny Bunny and Ernest is Gingerbread Man. Carolyn is Bewitched and Yvonne is Lollipop. She almost bowled 200. Gail Portie, May 11. Spending night at Helen's with Brent. Eddie's horse had baby. Brent wants to talk but didn't know what to say. Wendy has such a nice trailer. Made Gail "plum sick." Only complaint is ugly green carpet. Brent talks about his horses. Ernest Adolph and Edna brought some delicious peaches. PawPaw soaking his foot and "sure looks bad." Tomatoes coming in. Brent says a few words. Someone mistakenly thought D.D. gone overseas on mission instead of working at copper mine. JoAnne Ragas Scarabin. May 13. Helen and Clarence finish tape with more talk on the trailer park.

Cassettes, Boothville - October 14, 1976

Cassettes, Boothville - October 14, 1976

Thu Oct 14, 1976. Michael's birthday. Went to see him for his birthday and watched TV; stayed about an hour because Mike had to do his homework. Judy's baby has been so sick so Gwen didn't plan a party. Still run their A/C a lot. Michael wanted one of these "gagger cameras." Sissy wanted earrings and one of those ovens that Jay had (EasyBake Oven). Helen Mae and Clarence worry more than they've ever had and that "dern old truck." Went to see Daryl Bubrig and Bobby Lonely to see if they have to pay insurance on this truck. Aggravates her so much. $263 for late charges and now it's $270.95. Not about to pay that. Not any sense in giving them that money for nothing. Bank, PawPaw and Bubrig said she needs to pay it but MawMaw refuses and they can haul her off to jail; she doesn't care. Clarence tells his side of the story and expresses just as much frustration. Helen and Jerolyn ran into the Shackelfords (Don and Barbara). Kidney issues for someone and MawMaw going to stop and go cry over the $270. "Aggavated so much." Helen Mae didn't want to rent to anyone with dogs where they even let the dogs sleep in the bed and MawMaw hates that. Gotta start riding her bike again. Scarabins have been doing really good with shrimping. Lillian Scarabin's son Johnny got a new black with red trim Ford truck. Put new molding around their "winders." "Art" not to tell this part (removed). Never heard back from the bank and "Daddy ought to call Bobby Lonely." Worst she's felt in a long time. Hates to pay the $270.95. "just highway robbery when you have to pay something you don't want." Larry took half a day off to please his wife (Wendy) and they went shopping. Gail stopped by on her way to the store and asked MawMaw if she wanted to go but MawMaw didn't want to go. Uncle Nicky came by and said his heart was hurting. Used to go to Dr. Wessener but Nicky wouldn't listen to the doctor. Dr. Wessener told him not to come back so now Nicky has no doctor. Theresa is always gone with the Home Demonstration Club and Uncle Nicky is left alone too often. Music (Kiss and Say Goodbye, The Manhattans- removed). Brought Gail's vacuum cleaner to get it fixed which would cost $30- too much so they got a sweeper for $39. Evans bought a deep freezer for $329. Supposed to pay it from Billy's bus driving money. Soap Opera in the trailer park (removed). She and Aunt Gail Portie eating grapes. Radio finishes tape out (Let's put it back together again, Jerry Lee Lewis-removed).

Cassettes, Boothville - April 18-20, 1977

Cassettes, Boothville - April 18-20, 1977

Monday, April 18, 1977. Helen Mae telling Marilyn to let Jason talk next time including being silly. She's been enjoying picking berries. Made about 20 pints or so of jelly. House is a wreck and she's been "nelecting it." PawPaw has been working hard in the garden and the rain helped everything. Wendy wasn't feeling too good that day. "Pregnant" MawMaw guesses. As long as she can wade around in the weeds, nothing wrong with her. Can't get anyone to go berrypicking with her. Clarence enjoyed listening to the tape and hopes everyone can stay in good health. Planning a trip around May 4-5. Painted most of the house. Wants to leave everything clean before they leave. Figures Jason is more the farmer so he gives an update on garden. Mark F. was driving one of Lester's pick up trucks and hit a guy on a motorcycle and guy had to get his leg amputated. Hit and Run accident. Don't bring anything but yourselves home in July. Better than worrying about a bunch of "whatnots." Gail has to work all that week and MawMaw is babysitting more than anything else. Much rather being in the briar patch than babysitting. Lost patience but glad she can help. Going to town next day with Wendy. Got a "hickey" on her nose like a "lil ol' pimple." Had it burned off once by Dr. Wesson but it grew back. Wendy made an appointment for her to get it checked out and everyone seems to think everything is cancer. Poor ol' Jackie's been on one of her warpaths and talks only to PawPaw but not MawMaw. Used to call PawPaw two or three times a day. He said he had the hardest time to get off the phone and he had to go read the paper. Someone set the school on fire and Jackie said it was Joan who she accuses of everything. Thinks it's Mike who works for the phone company. Her old man is Daryl who works a lot so she probably gets lonely. "Talks but don't say nothing either." Said Carolyn is always down. MawMaw says this sure beats writing as she's already finished one side. Can't get over how Josh can talk so good but also can't believe he's so scared of helicopters. Also can't believe how Deron's voice has changed. Doctor cut out thing off her nose. Has to go back the following week to find out if it's skin cancer. Hadn't had a pap smear in about 40 years. She gives an assessment of D.D.'s photo taking skills. She laughed so hard seeing the man and Jason chewing in pictures. Sent to Pictures USA but they didn't come out too good. "That Turlich boy should be over there by now... Marion Turlich." Wendy called to remind Helen Mae to take care of her nose that just got minor surgery. She's so mad that she didn't think to let Ernie Scarabin and Lillian talk on the tape when they were there to pay the rent. Wednesday, April 20, 1977. Helen Mae picked a water bucket full of berries. PawPaw and she were picking even more when Wendy Fitzgerald came over. Never satisfy all her kids. PawPaw went to the Delta that morning and some woman said Gayle (Means) would be coming home soon too. Wendy shared some good news. PawPaw still outside in the rain fooling around in the garden. Lisa Adolph called. Wendy found out she's pregnant. D.D. had given Larry hope that he'd have a girl. Forty dollars for Kindergarten. MawMaw wants to see her big boy (Josh). Wanted to keep all the kids and let Marilyn and D.D. to go back to Indonesia alone. Further assessment of D.D.'s pictures. Finally learning Kessie's name and figures she'll be scared of everything.

Cassettes, Boothville - April 29-May 04, 1976

Clarence and Wendy try to get Steve to talk. Helen and Gail Portie there too. John Dirk nothing to say. Steve eventually talks and PawPaw said Steve ate all the ice cream. Wendy ate some fresh green beans with parents. Steve watching Happy Days. PawPaw, Larry and Horace bought a big tractor. MawMaw already wrote a bunch of letters to Marilyn. MawMaw's garden is beautiful. Eddie and Gail not sure what they'll do. PawPaw bringing Uncle Nicky to the doctor. Quentin and Brent broke the bird feeder at the feed store. JD got a shot in his "hiny." Looking for new trailers. Looked at Jason's watermelon patch. Rode the escalators and Steve got a blue ice cream it's all over his face. Gail gives update that it's April 29, 1976. She doesn't know what they'll do for a new trailer. She's been collecting. Brent had an accident "but he'll survive." Brent misses everyone. Kids are driving her nuts. She got card from Hawaii. Quentin Evans talks a little bit and Jerolyn Sue Adolph. Quentin has no one to play baseball with him anymore. Carolyn was Lady Bug and switched to Howdy Doody. Wendy is Life Saver while Larry Fitzgerald is The Thing. Quentin is the Six Million Dollar Man. Carolyn Bergeron gets on and talks. She's having a terrible day and legs hurt. Kids were watching Scooby Doo and then she cleaned and washed. Got a CB and Horace said she should have something more original. Janie and Teddy got beautiful new Dodge Van. Kyle doesn't want to talk but rather act silly and eat cookies. He and Craig were trying to get a hold of Boney Maronie (MawMaw) and to receive from Craig, Big Foot. Wendy getting ready to move out. They think it's funny seeing everyone going in and out of old Scarabin trailer. Helen Mae and Carolyn only ones to go to church. Jerolyn and she are peeling carrots. Clarence concerned about swimming. Rachel got a new swimming pool and Quentin played all day with her. Wendy continues about how good Mr. Jack's pizza is. Banana pudding. BBQ. Jerolyn was happy that Bonnie got Primary President job. Uncle Bill says the guy PawPaw bought the tractor from stopped by... Lynn possibly. PawPaw took Nicky to doctor. Helen got her beans to go pick and five tomatoes ready. Said nobody wanted to talk but Wendy, Carolyn, Gail, Jerolyn and even PawPaw. Asking Marilyn to be careful with her grandkids. Steve and Quentin made a mess with the ice cream and MawMaw thought PawPaw was watching them. Went to go visit Yvonne and Emmett. Nicky got another shot in the knee. Then she and Clarence gathered their beans. Clarence says they've gotten a lot of work done. He said he's never raised such nice potatoes. Pleads with Marilyn and D.D. to take good care of their grandkids. He loves hearing our voices. Helen Mae said she talked for 30 minutes without recording and can't remember what she said. She had to send all of D.D.'s checks because they put "Louise" instead of "Louis." She's glad they put money in their account because MawMaw's already spent about half of it. She talks directly to Josh (says hi to come see MawMaw) and Jason (on watermelons) and she wishes Deron was there to pick some berries. MawMaw says good night due to a "hard day" coming. Wants to bring Sister Halstead some beans and work around the house, but gnats are so bad. Ate their breakfast and off to work in the garden but looks like a storm because there's a nice breeze going. Tractor fixed. Deron would enjoy it now. Everyone got cards from Marilyn while in Hawaii. Clarence is under the house waiting for her. Watered the tomatoes. Onions and carrots. Called Carolyn who's on vacation and cleaning her house including two days spent on her kitchen. Plays partial song (removed). Wendy will be moving next day. Helen has to go stuff peppers and get some things ready as she struggles to finish the tape. Hopes everyone is still happy and "not too lonesome." No rest for them; "always something going on." Trying to get rid of most of their garden so that Gail can put her trailer in place.

Marilyn, D.D. and the kids give MawMaw and PawPaw updates from the jungle in Tembagapura. D.D. pulled a muscle in his leg. Ganati paintings. Mesa McGill paints beautifully too. Battery began to wear out for Marilyn so voices sound a little bit like chipmunks but Marilyn puts new batteries in to resolve the issue.

Marilyn misses everyone and tells Michael Adolph to talk even more on tapes. Josh didn't want to talk at first but then tells MawMaw that he colored the walls and he's sorry. Marilyn suggests he call Venita Helton (Stan) that she's "hot pants." MawMaw is too tired to write. Cassettes, Boothville - September 19-22, 1976

Sunday, September 19, 1976. Helen Mae Wright Adolph. Listening to Johnny Cash and Charlie Pride. Got Scarabin tape from Tembagapura and so glad to get it. She packed as much as she could into the package. Everyone went to church. Had dinner with Carolyn "Sister" Bergeron's and had some delicious spaghetti. She doesn't like those little "short orders" and gets tired of just meat and potatoes. She and Clarence took a nap and she and Aunt Gail Portie made strawberry ice cream. Inviting Lindy and Beth over. Johnny Cash "Sold Out of Flag Poles" (removed). MawMaw and PawPaw paid for just about all of the package. Shirt for D.D.'s birthday and film was supposed to be for Christmas and candy for D.D. PawPaw (Clarence) sent the bubble gum. She's worried about the "primitive people... killing [us kids]... they have to eat. Don't let them go too far." MawMaw thought all the people in the world had been civilized by now. "Hope it's not the lost tribes." PawPaw has been suffering with "arthur-itis... can't tell him nothing." She'd like them to go fishing. Talked a little bit about Ike Scarabin and a trailer. Lillian never gets out or come over with Ernie ('Pompy") Scarabin. MawMaw doesn't know if they’re mad at her or not. Just talked to Uncle Jim and is "as nuts as ever" and about to start cobalt treatment and he's "kindly scared" to take them. Didn't get to talk to Aunt Ruth. Uncle Emmett and Aunt Yvonne came by and Aunt Yvonne has to get some tests run. Saw a wreck coming home from church and three guys died. Eddie Portie said two died and two seriously hurt... worked at the Pogey Plant. PawPaw didn't feel like talking. Uncle Nicky had to work and Aunt Annie goes by Aunt Ethel's on Sundays. Carolyn took Craig and Kyle to bowling alley in leagues and Craig did pretty good and Kyle too. She "art" not to worry about when tape will finish. Louis Adolph still same condition. Helen Mae and Clarence "lawnmowering." Had to get new hot water heater for Aunt Wendy's trailer. Went to Garage Sale with Miss Lizzy (Paul Buras' mom). Bought jacket for Brent and fan for camp for $2. It was "kindly raining." Put water tank up by no water yet and she guesses she "didn't pray hard enough." Brought tapes to Ernie and Lil to listen to tapes. Went to Scarabins and Gertrude (Grandma) told Louis (Grandpa) Scarabin to quiet down or he's going to have another heart attack. Lillian had been sick and Miss Lizzy got a new car (Maverick, blue and white) "prettier than Gail's." Gave Miss Lizzy a Book of Mormon. She's about the "only one that would read it and listen or study it or whatever... or maybe not." Hadn't mail a "cotton-pickin' thing." Wished the sisters would write to give her a break and can't wait until all daughters are all home so she won't have to write. Aunt Wendy said Marilyn said she can have all her Wish Books. Johnny (Lil's son) was visiting from Florida. Janelle's baby is so cute and Jim is "proud as a peacock." Everyone laughed about the gourds and "balls out."

Marilyn and Josh. Deron went to cub scouts. Josh playing with beads and tells MawMaw (Helen Mae) played tape three times. Rock slide knocked out power. Jason broke glass. One toy per child. Globe and soccer ball. Tape player for Jason. Put together car for Josh. Chris Marz so nice to pick up extra like soccer balls. Lonesome for all her sisters and parents. Hope the kids are satisfied and will get Batik shirts for D.D. Monday, December 6, D.D. says he's there with just Josh and that he works every Saturday. Marilyn had gone to the Felders to visit with Brenda. Marilyn and he miss the good shopping. Shopping is limited over there and have to go to Australia to get anything good. D.D. continues to report on the big rock slide that knocked out power and telephone lines. Wishing everyone a good Christmas back in Boothville. Josh wishes Merry Christmas after he tells 'Da" to stop laughing. Marilyn says the painters came and she got aggravated because they didn't paint it the right color and Jason fusses. Deron just got back from cub scouts while Marilyn asks D.D. to "be quiet to let the kid talk." Deron talks about the scout program and electives and different levels like wolf and bear. Achievement 12 is called Protection. Deron's done 5 so far. He earned his Bobcat badge. Practiced for the Pack Meeting where all the moms come to see. Deron went up to the waterfall and they might go to the Grasberg and keeps talking with his hands. At church Deron gave his testimony for the first time and sang some Christmas songs. He went over to the soccer game played with the Indonesians after his friend Richard's house. For scouts, Richard and he will explain what to do if your clothes catch on fire. Can't wait to go to the second waterfall. Jason came home from girlfriend's house (Betancourts) and he wanted to go home for Christmas. Marilyn gives a list of what they got for kids for Christmas. Mesa McGill helped with getting some of the toys too. She'll also mail the tape from California. Willard McGill's mom died just before they were going back home. Not a shock but still a surprise and sad. Put up tree on Tuesday night and it's "beautiful." Mesa gave ornaments to put on the tree. Last night, they went to the show "The Mechanic" with Charles Bronson. Trish came over and played cards with Deron. Jason haviing a time now that he has a girlfriend and it's her birthday but he's not sure what to get her. He just took a bath then going to bed. Painters are there and probably think she's talking to herself. Josh talks about decorating to MawMaw and asks PawPaw if he's been working. Deron and Jason got the loose bowels. Deron corrects Marilyn on what night it is- Tuesday instead of Wednesday. Got a letter from MawMaw. Don't give Johnny none of the money back and he owes MawMaw and PawPaw still. Yvonne is Jason's girlfriend and he goes to see her everyday. Stan and Peter came over and helped decorate cookies. Marilyn is seven months pregnant. She's gained 16 lbs more than the other three kids. Asked for Michael, Lisa and Sissy's address to send stuff to them. Tells them to just talk over this tape but they didn't (thankfully). Beautiful day. She helped wrap about 600 presents for all the kids in town. Everyone having trouble getting out on the phones. Eat alone as a family for Christmas. She misses Patsy and Blackie. She's wanting to know who's pregnant back home; otherwise, she won't tell any news back to them on baby's birth. Gayle Means says hi to "Miss Adolph." Have to break Marilyn's fingers because she's always writing. Wishes Merry Christmas to everyone.

Interview, Jennifer "Gigi" Neal Hansen

Gigi Hansen takes us on a magical journey from her early days in Slidell, Louisiana all the way to landing her dream job for a major media giant. After explaining how she and her sisters got their nicknames, Gigi guides us through some tumultuous years. From Mobile, Alabama her freshman year of high school, her dad's decision to move to Tembagapura, Indonesia and to Wasatch Academy which eventually turned out her rock solid group of friends she cherishes to this day. After a brief stint at Louisiana State University, she'd had enough and returned to her heart in Utah to attend University of Utah where she immediately found peace and joy. We reminisce some on the magical summer of 1982 in Tembagapura where we had talks that certainly shaped my outlook going forward. Gigi is authentic and has very little patience for the pretentious among us. She met her amazing husband John, who'd served a mission in England, and had two beautiful children Josh and Alivia and grandchildren Lillianne and Charlie. She has run her husband's successful business for more than 20 years and has landed her dream job. She offers comfort to her loved ones with life lessons and her friendship is to be cherished forever.

Marilyn Adolph Scarabin gives an update on the giant 50 lbs. over-the-limit package that Helen Mae and the sisters sent. A great camera that D.D. wanted. So much bubble gum and balloons which she'll save most for Christmas instead of giving the kids all of it at once. Included too were many new cassette tapes to record on instead of recycyling the ones from Louisiana. Jason and Deron thank everyone for what they sent. Two-year old Josh Scarabin talks and says he went to Portsite. Louis M. "D.D." enjoyed getting all the "junk" but were really a bunch of "goodies" including some Milky Ways and Snickers. Marilyn and Jason smacking gum. Josh kept wanted to talk but then wouldn't. Happy to hear Saints won 4 preseason games - as usual. Time-Picayune is delivered over there two weeks late. Tell his family hello including Happy Birthday to his dad and sister Judy Willig. Said Marilyn seems to be doing ok despite Carolyn Bergeron reading her handwriting that she's "depressed." Thanked Uncle Emmett, Aunt Yvonne and Aunt Annie. Josh has a stone ax. Marilyn explains a visit from Don Richardson who was a missionary that bought machetes and tools for the native Asmat and Sawi tribes who were cannibals and they didn't kill him.
