Episode 146: The Science Behind Why We Believe Our Own Lies
The Science Behind Why We Believe Our Own Lies In this week's episode, I discuss the psychology behind why we create and believe false truths to get us out of life situations. Disclaimer: I initially wanted to call this episode "Are You F'ing Serious?" or "Are You Shitting Me?" but ended up opting for the more professional science-based title. Plus, I talk about the silly things my clients say when they start a new lifestyle journey. "I'm afraid of eating too much protein." "I don't want to get too many muscles." "I need to get in shape before I start working out." Why do people so easily believe false things? There are probably as many answers to this question as there are people who have ever believed falsehoods. Nonetheless, psychologists have shown that a relatively small set of cognitive biases or mental shortcuts can explain a lot about how false notions take root. One of the most agreed-upon ideas in the field of psychology is that people routinely use mental shortcuts to understand what happens around them. All kinds of things occur in the world around us, and we don't always have the time or energy to sit down and carefully examine all of them. So, we tend to use quick and largely unconscious rules-of-thumb to determine what we should believe—and these shortcuts sometimes steer us in the wrong direction. Here are some of the culprits: Emotional Reasoning: Whether we like it or not, all of us can be powerfully swayed by emotions. We'd like to think that our feelings are driven by logic and reason, particularly when it comes to our health. Unfortunately, this relationship is often reversed. Sometimes we end up using our reasoning ability to justify or defend a conclusion that we've already drawn based on our emotions. This phenomenon, called emotional reasoning, can lead us astray without our ever knowing. Confirmation Bias: Once we have a belief, we tend to cling to it, even when it's untrue.  Confirmation bias is the tendency to seek out information that supports what we already believe. And if you're just interested, well, then don't waste your time or the time of all those that you recruit to support you on your journey. Episode 144: Compounding Consistency (Winning vs. Losing)
Compounding Consistency (Winning vs. Losing) In this week's episode, I discuss how the margin between success and failure is tiny. You can apply this to all of the following Hero vs. Villain scenarios. Angel vs. Devil Good vs. Evil Light vs. Dark Success vs. Failure Consistency Compounds (Works Aggressively Both Ways: Positive and Negative) Consistency: steadfast adherence to the same principles Human beings aggressively follow routines and patterns. Routines: regular, unvarying, habitual, unimaginative, or rote procedure. Or an unvarying and constantly repeated formula, as of speech or action; convenient or predictable response. This is where the danger of apathetic standards and tolerations can lead to your downfall and ultimate failure. Compounding NEGATIVE Consistency is what creates the challenges and adversities in your life. Powerful Positive Consistency is what destroys roadblocks and turns adversity into opportunity. Certainty vs. Uncertainty Certainty: an assured fact Uncertainty: the state of doubt; hesitancy Commitment vs. Complacency (Opportunity Is Found In Action Not Apathy) Commitment: the act of committing, pledging, or engaging oneself ~ a pledge or promise; obligation: dedication; allegiance Complacency: a false feeling of security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect Committed vs. Interested comes to mind when I think of the radical difference between these two mindsets.  When you are interested in something, you only do It when it's convenient. When you are committed to something, you accept no excuses, only results. Most people have a plan B or a contingency plan for what they will do when their plan A fails or, more likely, when they don't apply the required effort for their plan A to succeed. So, if you plan on being wildly successful and hitting your goals and dreams, you must enter the fight with no exit strategy. Burn the bridge behind you and go all-in committed to your success. And if you're just interested, well, then don't waste your time or the time of all those that you recruit to support you on your journey. The Truth About Judgment  In this week's episode, we are going to talk about judgment.  There is a 100% chance you're either being judged, have been judged, or are judging someone.  The TRUTH about judgment:  Judgment arises from unmet expectations. Judgment is a mirrored behavioral distortion.  This show is perfect if you are currently on a journey and you feel like those closest to you are not supporting you.  Tips:  #1 Audit your input ~ be very aware of who and what you allow into your mindset. The Magic Bullet You’ve Been Searching For In this week's episode I’m going to do my best to sell you on you. Everyone else is trying to sell you on something external. Think about the last advertisement you saw on SpaceBook or TV. It was trying to convince you that you need a pill, potion, lotion, workout video, device, special diet, etc. Everyone from WW to Jenny to the latest social media guru tells you that all you have to do is drink this, eat this, do this workout, and are all full of shit. And the truth is that you know they are full of shit, but you keep buying the pills, paying for the diet, and breaking your neck trying to do a workout that some jabroni made up in his mom's basement. My goal today is to STOP you from falling for this falling formula for the 50th time. Today my goal is to try and convince you to buy in on you. Today, I'm trying to sell you on you! You've got everything you need. All you've got to do is find the belief system that allows you to access your full potential. The life you deserve and desire is already in you. You must heal your pain, trauma, and tragedy, or the vices you've chosen will continue to control you for the rest of your life. You must decide that you are stronger than your story and that you will use your past as a propeller to the future you desire. Your story is WHY the external stuff doesn't work. The truth is that the external is necessary. A proper nutritional intake is necessary to live at your maximum wellness. But, you already know what is good for you and what is not. You don't need a guru to tell you that. A proper workout routine is necessary to live at your maximum wellness. But, you don't need a guru to customize a workout plan that is special for you. TRUTH: I've got a client that is damn near 100 pounds down, and all she does is WALK. If the external stuff worked, you would be in the EXACT body that you desire. If the external stuff worked, you would never think about losing weight. If the external worked, we wouldn't be at an all-time high of obesity and preventable diseases. If the external worked (insert any number of unhealthy statistics showing how we are going in the wrong direction as a world). The bottom line is this team. The external stuff is not the answer to your problems. You are the answer. You are the solution. You are the magic bullet. 21 Reasons Why YOU Won’t Change  #1: You’re in love with the IDEA & THE DREAM more than the process #2: Your lack of clarity ~ You’re so busy focusing on the wrong things that you have no clarity on the real stuff. #3: You get lost in the HOW ~ You get derailed in the details #4: You’re not willing to let a part of yourself die ~ “EXAGGERATORY” ~ Burn the boat ~ Programmed to take familiarity over being uncomfortable.  #5: You’re not willing to drop the ego #6: You’re consuming way too much free information ~ OVERCONSUMPTION ~ Free can create a spark, but it will never last. If you’re consuming things without taking massive action, then it’s a waste of your time.  #7: You all have BIG plans, but when it comes time to execute, the size of your dream blocks your vision. ~ “Little Hinges Swing Big Doors.” #8: You’re relying on PASSION & MOTIVATION #9: You’re in the Wrong Environment #10: You’re hanging in the wrong crowd ~ Misery & Quitters love company, “The Tiny Anchor can keep the Big Yacht from moving.” #11: You’re trying to make it perfect. Perfectionism is FEAR in disguise. IMPERFECT ACTION TRUMPS THE PERFECT PLAN EVERY TIME.  #12: You’re waiting for someone to save you. The truth is no one is coming to save you because you ARE your savior. You’re the problem, but you’re also your solution. #13: You’re waiting for the “RIGHT TIME.” #14: You’re simply not willing to commit ~ Everyone who has a plan B is always going to revert to Plan B. I know corny, but again TRUE Making health a priority has never been more critical than it is in 2021. Episode 105: My Circle of Mentors
My Circle of Mentors  In today's episode, I'm going to share my journey with mentorship. I think some of them will surprise you and make you think about your definition of a mentor.  The truth is, in the moments of life with my first three mentors, I was completely unaware of what mentorship looked or felt like. It wasn't until later in life when I reflected on these relationships that I saw the power of their presence in my life.  #1 My first mentor was my grandfather ~ Floyd Cupp #2 My second mentor was one of my high school coaches ~ Clyde Evatt  #3 My third mentor was one of my bosses early in my professional life ~ Steve Ricks  #4 My fourth mentor was one we've all had ~ Pain and Uncertainty  #5 My fifth mentor tuned about also to be the most important person in the world to me ~ Lori  Mentors #1 through #4 were placed in my life through personal and professional circumstances. Number five was a last-minute trip to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. 🤣
 The remaining mentors I've had and continue to have are based on my decision to dive deep into my personal success journey. The Fragile State Of The Human EGO In today's episode, I will take a deep dive into the human EGO's fragile state and how that leads to overwhelming discomfort and, ultimately, pain. Now we've all heard the statement that your Ego is the Enemy. Ryan Holiday wrote an entire book on the topic. Some of you hippest may even have a t-shirt or have shared a meme stating, "Your ego is not your amigo."  I'm afraid I wholeheartedly have to disagree with that idea.  I believe the EGO is necessary and should serve a vital purpose in our lives.  Now before you call Ryan and tell him, I disagreed with him. Let me explain.  I concur with the concept that an untamed out of control juvenile Ego is your Enemy and will 100% destroy your life without a doubt.  The healthy Ego I'm supporting here is evolved, nurtured, and mature.  Untamed Ego Example: The untamed Ego is like a 6 six year hopped up on frosting and soda that has been released into the ball pit at Chucky Cheese. That joker has zero regards for his safety or the safety of others. And his sole mission is to embarrass his mom and make her the talk of the next PTA/reason for mom's the get-together and gossip meeting.  Evolved Ego Example: The evolved Ego is like Gandhi. You know that dude has seen and heard some bullshit in his time, yet he stays centered, doesn't publicly judge, and provides a sense of calm for the world to follow. You've Got This (My 6 Step Guide For Overcoming Adversity) In today's episode, I'm going to explain why this isn't more than you can handle ~It's just more than you expected. I know it might be hard to believe right now, but I promise it's 100% true. You will, or should I say, you can come out of this uncertainty in a better place than you went in. Will it be easy ~ NO! Will it be worth it ~ YES! The truth is that even some of the strongest put together people I know are in the middle of an identity crisis. Who the hell am I and what the hell am I supposed to do now? This is a common phrase I'm hearing from friends, peers, and connections. So it's not uncommon or weird for you to be feeling this way too. But here's why you're different and why you're going to make it out the other side in a better place. You know this disruption is an opportunity. You may not know exactly what to do, but you know forward is the only way out. You are inspired to take action. You may not know precisely what action to take, but the fact that you're listening to this show is a great sign. You're ready for the transformation that always comes from overcoming adversity. So now what! Follow these simple actions to move towards the transformation you deserve and desire. #1 Write This Down: My current situation is not more than I can handle ~ It's just more than I expected. #2 Objective Inventory: Take a brutally honest inventory of where you are with your Foundational 5 (Fitness ~ Food ~ Family ~ Finances ~ Faith). This must be done with radical honesty and zero judgment. This is the only way you will see things as they truly are instead of worse than they are. #3 Declaration: After your object review of your current state, write down your declaration for what you will BE, DO and HAVE as you move through this transformation opportunity and into the newest best version of yourself. I would also suggest sharing this declaration with as many people as possible. This will anchor the action into your sub-conscience and increase the likelihood of achievement. #4 Clear Intention: Set a clear and concise intention about why this is important to you and why you will take the necessary action to achieve your desired outcome. #5 Power Action List: If you've read my book The Overweight Mind, you know I'm a fan of creating a Power Action list for the outcomes I desire. For each of your Foundational 5, I want you to declare one Power Action that you will do every day for the next 30 days. A Power Actions is a specific and definable action that creates positive momentum and moves you toward the outcome you deserve and desire. Power Actions are non-negotiable and are not susceptible to your excuses. #6 Rally The Team: Call your Foxhole Friends to support you and, most importantly, to hold you accountable. Remember, Foxhole Friends are unique. They don't pacify you, and they don't allow you to make excuses. They tell you the truth even when the truth is the last thing you want to hear. Episode 96: The Check The Box Mindset
The Check The Box Mindset In this episode, I will tell you why your "check the box" mentality holds you back from all your success. Checking the box is the equivalent of getting excited about receiving a participation ribbon. Not only is it holding you back, but it creates a damaging false belief that you're doing everything you can. It has become your best and deadliest excuse. Because if you're checking the box and doing everything you "can," then it must be someone else's fault. Let me explain before you get pissed and throw your phone with me on it out the window. But before I do, let me make you a promise. If you listen to this full episode, drop the check the box lifestyle and begin to do things with 100% purpose and passion, your life will change forever. Bold? Yes! True? You bet your sweet ass it's true! Not only have I validated in my own life, I have thousands of clients who have stopped checking boxes and started cashing checks. I know that doesn't make a ton of sense, but it sounded very ballerish, so I thought I drop it on you. The Question: How is the check the box mindset holding you back and keeping you stuck? Let me give you a few scenarios and analogies that will shine a light on the deficiency and destruction of this behavior. The gym/working out is a perfect example of a place and activity that 90% of people use the check the box mentality. Treadmill Nancy walks and talks and never breaks a sweat. Showing up to a workout and merely going through the motions instead of applying positive tension and getting better is crazy. Why even show up if you're doing it to check a box and not actually to get better? The same check the box downfalls happen in all the areas of our lives. Relationships ~ and then they fail, and we can't figure why. "Yea, love you too….." ~ Date night only on your anniversary (you baller you). Money ~ and then we are broke and can't afford the life we desire. "I went to work today…..pay me." We, as a society ~ You, as an individual, must get rid of this check the box way of life. It's the only way we get better. It's the only way we get to live the lives we deserve and desire. I'm going to leave you with this: Average people check the box and proclaim a job completed. Elite level people know that there is no box because their goals are too big to be contained, and the thought of a participation ribbon makes them sick. You are not average, my friends! Episode 95: Time Under Tension
Time Under Tension The purpose to today’s show is to help you get comfortable under tension. Not only is it important that you develop the ability to positively apply tension to your body and brain it is imperative if you desire a life of awesomeness. Your body and your brain are very similar to the respects of how they grow and evolve. Both respond and grow based on Time Under Tension. I will add the caveat that the tension needs to be POSITIVE with regard to the tension. Positive Meaning: Intelligently applied with respect to the weight and intelligently processed with regard to mental tension. You probably avoid tension because you have created the belief that it will create pain or damage. And the truth is you’re correct. Growth, both physical and mental, will be uncomfortable processes. Example: Weights create micro-tears in the muscle. This is how the muscle gets bigger and stronger. The body’s healing response kicks in, and in the process of recovering from the tears, the body builds a new layer of muscle and a new dimension of strength. The very same metaphorical process happens with your mindset. Time under positive tension creates discomfort and challenge. You respond to this discomfort or metaphorical micro-tears by building new neural pathways. Creating new pathways and circuits in your brain builds and fortifies a stronger, more resilient mental position. AKA: Your MINDSET The lesson is: Don’t Avoid The Tension! Episode 94: Don’t Step In The Dog Sh*t
Don’t Step In The Dog Sh*t Today show is designed to help you stay sane amid our current toxic social media-driven madness. I'm going to start with this little thought that will help you the next time you get thoroughly pissed off and write a 27-page response or rebuttal to something you read online. "Getting offended by something posted on social media is like choosing to step in dog shit instead of walking around it." I have a meme saved on my phone. It's a picture of Will Ferrell with a smirk on his face. The caption reads: "Admit it, you sometimes listen to stranger's conversations and think to yourself, "You are a stupid motherf@&ker." This same thought process applies to life on social media. First of all, my goal is NOT to consume nonsense, so I try to stay away from all forms of media, including social. But occasionally, I find myself captivated by the circus that is Facebook. And every time this happens, I leave thinking that exact quote from the Will Ferrell meme and my hope from a better world diminish a little with each post I read. I've decided to do this podcast today because I know so many of you feel the same way that I do, and we need to be better at how we handle these trips to the circus. I call it the "Move Along Mentality" ~ meaning if you find yourself in the middle of the three-ring social media circus, take a pause, don't step in the dog shit, and get out of the tent as fast as possible. This will save your sanity and stop you from feeling anxious, depressed, or pissed off. I remind myself of this every time I hear or read something that registers on my WTF did you say meter. People can only think, act, and speak from their level of evolvement and their position of perspective. There is a line in a country song that says: "You Can't Change A Made Up Mind." Remember that the next time you think you're ranting is going to convert someone from their way of thinking to yours. Here is the current state of the world if you disagree with someone. Disagreement or even a slightly varying opinion equals I hate you, and you're the dumbest person on the planet. And now I must try to destroy you. Social media isn't a place for intelligent conversation. It's a place for grandiose, shock level statements that incite emotion and overreaction. Don't get caught up in the keyboard warrior life of bullying, shaming, and saying shit you'd NEVER say to someone's face. Avoid the dog shit and live a happy life. Lack of Accountability: Who will ever know? You WILL and truth be told that is all that matters because that is what destroys your belief that the process will work. 3. You Don't Believe In Yourself: You've broken promises to yourself so many times that you no longer believe your on BS. 4. It's Too Hard: You have convinced yourself it will be hard, and humans avoid things that we perceive as difficult or hard. Now onto the four-step strategy. 4 Steps To Creating Positive Momentum: 1. Public Declaration: You need to tell everyone, and I mean everyone what you are doing. The more people you tell what you're doing, the less likely you will be to quit. 2. Accountability: This can't be your friends. Your friends are just as lazy and unmotivated as you are. Let's face it. We are who we hang around. If your friends were strong enough to motivate, inspire, or lead you, they would have already done it, and you wouldn't be where you are. 3. The Decision: Decided you're with it! 4. Action: You must take simple and consistent actions that build positive momentum. When you defer action, the likelihood of you actually doing what you said you were going to do drops by 87.36% because you stay on the someday hamster wheel. Episode 92: Booby-Trapped
Booby-Trapped In the week's episode, I discuss why the path of least resistance is always booby-trapped. This is true in areas of war and all areas of life. The wish is that that path to success is a straight line. The reality is that the line is rarely straight, and it requires grit and determination and advanced navigating skills. Eco-Challenge ~ Adventure Racing ~ Military ~ YOU Weight Loss: The hack, the quick fix, the fad, the magic pill, or potion ~ the bright shiny object. We know that the only real formula for weight loss or overall quality health is committed consistency to the basics. The basics are boring to most people. And when humans get bored and lazy, they get complacent, and complacency leads to looks for a shortcut or the path of least resistance. In war, this is when you end up dead. Money: The get rich quick scam, the pyramid, the MLM, the gold mine in Arizona that sounds too good to be true. All of the above will leave you broke and jobless. Relationships: The lousy relationship you know isn't right (the settler), the vacation tender hook-up that you think is the real thing, that stripper from Vegas who keeps DM'ing you to come to the club. Episode 91: Eight Lessons I've Learned
Eight Lessons I've Learned In the week's episode, I discuss the eight lessons I’ve learned during my time as a life and transformation coach.  1. There is tremendous variability in individual responses to change. Some clients need to work twice as hard to get half the results. This is not fair, but it's reality.  2. Many know what to do, but fail to execute. Being accountable to a coach, and having an objective eye helps them go from average to excellent.  I think it's essential to define the word "objective" ~ not influenced by personal feelings or opinions in considering and representing facts. 3. It's tough to predict success because it based on 90% mindset and 10% talent. You don't know where a client falls in that equation until they are faced with adversity.  4. Effort trumps talent in the end. I will always place my bet on effort. Talent gets bored and complacent. Effort always has something to prove.  5. Many overestimate the importance of the perfect plan and underestimate the importance of brutal consistency. I'll take the 80% plan for ten years, over the 100% plan you anguish over, never figure out, and never start.  6. Twenty-five years in the weight loss and fitness world has taught me this:  Intelligent people can often be their own worst enemy. They know just enough about a lot of things to make them dangerous. For example, they will go to extreme measures to find a hack or cutting edge idea that makes them feel like they have outsmarted the system. When in actuality, all they are doing is avoiding the boring, dull, challenging, yet highly effective BASICS that actually work.  Reminder: It is the commitment and consistency to the daily routine that yields the win. (Little Hinges Swing Big Doors) 7. The #1 transformation progress killer is anxiety/stress. It leads to questioning the plan and eventually quitting it altogether. The best advice for diminishing anxiety and stress is to avoid focusing on deceptive short term results, such as scale weight, bullshit bio-impedance body-fat scales and scans, and other people's highlight reels.  Focus instead on precision in the DAILY process: tracking/measuring food, movement, mindset and sleep duration, and quality. Point being, you achieve remarkable LONG TERM results by nailing the DAILY process. 8. Striving for balance is admirable, but don't be surprised when your progress is eclipsed by those who don't give a shit about balance. Episode 89: One Yard Short
One Yard Short  It was 29 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I remember the exact spot of the field. We are going into the East end zone.  I can still smell that unique odor that you'll only know if you've worn a helmet and shoulder pads. It's more of the smells that to the average person is gross, but to those that know, it's the smell of hard work and dedication.  Cisco 20 ~ Merkel 21 The excitement was building as our coach decided to go for the win instead of the tie.  "We are going for two boys. Let's win this thing." I was excited as I had just scored my third touchdown of the game to bring us one play away from the victory.  I can hear the band firing up the fight song.     I know it's all come down to me.  I can hear Coach Evatt call the play as we all gathered on the sidelines, ready to win.  "36 Belly G Keep" Wait. WHAT did he say keep. Keep meant that they would fake the handoff to me, and Jeff, the QB, would keep the ball and go around the end.  I remember thinking. NO, give the ball, and we will win. I had run all over these guys all game, and there was no way they were going to stop me from getting in the end zone. NO CHANCE I can still feel the deflation from not having my number called.  As we trotted from the sidelines to the line of scrimmage, I keep thinking Jeff just give me the ball. Let's run 36 Belly G and we will win…..but you didn't do that kind of thing in 1991. Your coach was like a god, and Coach Evatt was like a father to me. So I didn't say a word.  Jeff approaches the center ~ the ball is hiked ~ Jeff fakes the handoff ~ I blast through the hole pretty much-untouched landing in the end zone ~ Jeff heads around the end and is tackled before he can get in the end zone.  We lose 20 to 21  I'd give anything to have to play over again. The story and lesson isn't about me, and it's damn sure not a flashback to the glory days of high school. Those days are long gone. The lesson and the action that I take from that remembrance is WIN or LOSE always go with your best play. There is no shame in failing or falling short when you put it all on the table. When you've left it all on the field. That night in 1991 we didn't do that! Here are the 5 Power Takeaways from this episode: #1 Always run your best play. Don't try to get fancy. #2 Always bet on yourself. To this day, I know if Coach had called my number on that play, the outcome would have been different. We would have won 22 to 21. #3 Use your voice. Hindsight is 20/20, but if I had it all to do again, I would have looked Coach Evatt directly in the eyes and said. "Give me the ball, and we win." #4 When the game is on the line, want the ball. Demand the ball. #5 Use your past as fuel for your future. Not a day goes by that I don't think about that one play, that one yard. I use that moment to make sure I never miss success by one yard every again. You are all one yard away for something awesome in your life. Use the five lessons I learned the hard way to make sure you end up scoring the winning conversion in your life. Episode 87: The Damage of Deprivation
The Damage of Deprivation In the week's episode, we dive into the damaging effects of deprivation on our mindset. Definition of "deprive of": to take (something) away from (someone or something): to not allow (someone or something) to have or keep (something) Depravation, by definition, means: the damaging lack of material benefits considered to be basic necessities in a society  or the lack or denial of something considered to be a necessity. Power Takeaways From This Episode: 1. We take a look at the damaging psychology effects of being deprived. 2. Show how being deprived can lead to illogical and irrational behavior. (Binge or overeating ~ hoarding of money or as we all know toilet paper). 3. Feeling deprived of essential resources - love, food, money, time - can lead to anxiety or anger. We may obsess about the thing we've been deprived of. Or we may begin to feel that we need to operate in emergency mode. 4. Deprivation creates a scarcity mindset. 5. A scarcity mindset narrows our time frame, causing us to make impulsive, short-term decisions that increase our difficulties in the long-term, like putting overeating or hoarding food or not staying connected to your essential daily task, and hoping all of your life obligations will magically disappear. 6. Dealing with extremely limited resources increases the problems and barriers we have to deal with, resulting in mental fatigue and cognitive overload. Studies show that being lonely, or deprived, results in an unhealthy obsession, hyper-focus, and overvaluing of the thing we don't have. Ironically, the nature of scarcity itself impedes our coping efforts. 7. Stress and anxiety associated with scarcity interfere with motivation, causing us to be more vulnerable to temptation. 8. The classic deprivation failure ~ The Crash Diet ~ that actually makes us more likely to binge eat - not to mention the physiological effects of hunger on thinking and performance. The Solution:  Keeping your mindset positive by stacking momentum is the key to staying out in front of the overwhelm. Here is my five-step formula for turn the feeling of deprivation into appreciation. My formula for this is: #1 Meditation ~ which includes my gratitude, visualization and manifestation for the day #2 Movement ~ minimum of one workout and two walks per day #3 Motivation ~ I read, watch or listen to something motivating and inspiring for a minimum of 15 minutes every day #4 Encouragement ~ I send an encouraging message to at least three people every day (you can't feel hopeless and helpless when you're helpful) #5 Breathe ~ focus on and control your breathing when you feel the stress and anxiety building. Episode 85: Temptation ~ Gratification ~ Regret ~ Repeat
Temptation ~ Gratification ~ Regret ~ Repeat In this episode, I’m going to show you how the neural pathways that you’ve created over the years are the reason you keep repeating bad behaviors. And of course, I’m going to show you how to correct the problem. The million-dollar question is: "Why do I keep doing that even though I know it’s bad for me?” The answers: It’s your brain's fault! It has to do with neural pathways that get created as we do things. When we do something right, a pathway is created. Unfortunately, a pathway is also created when we something wrong. So the reason we keep making the same mistakes is that we slip by default back into existing neural pathways. Here’s how the process starts and ends: Temptation: the desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise. Gratification: pleasure, especially when gained from the satisfaction of a desire Regret: feel sad, repentant, or disappointed over (something that has happened or been done, especially a loss or missed opportunity). Repeat: do (something) again, either once or a number of times. Temptation + Gratification + Regret + Repeat = Insanity Insanity: Albert Einstein famously said, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.” Power Action Steps: 1. Identify the pattern ~ The only way to correct a pattern is to identify it. I know this sounds simple, but as humans, we do not like to focus on our flaws, so you’re going to have to get brutally honest with yourself. 2. Identify the hole ~ What hole are you trying to fill with the repetitive bad behavior? It could be emotional, physical, psychological, or even a combination of all two or more. 3. Visualize the new outcome ~ Actually, close your eyes and see yourself making a better, more productive decision when the temptation arises. Tap into how you will feel at that moment. Remember that emotion so you can use it when it’s game time. 4. Be vulnerable with yourself ~ It’s ok, hell it’s necessary to tap into your feelings for this exercise to have its maximum value. Don’t beat yourself up because of your past behavior. Embrace it and then make the power move with a declaration that you deserve better for yourself. 5. Take off your mask ~ this process is going to require brutal honesty. You are going to see things as they are and not from the lens of the story you’ve created as a coping mechanism. This will be challenging, but it will also be a game-changing moment in your journey. See yourself, accept yourself, and love yourself for who you are and who you will become. 6. Celebrate your success ~ share your new awareness with your circle of success. Let them embrace the win with you. This will anchor the new behavior and help you cement the new neural pathway into your subconscious brain. This might be to the most valuable message of the whole podcast: ~ write this down ~ “When setting expectations, no matter what has been said or written, if substandard performance is accepted and no one is held accountable ~ if there are no consequences ~ that poor performance becomes the new standard.” 6. Powerful reminder from Kekich’s Credo ~ #4 Real regrets only come from not doing your best. All else is out of your control. You're measured by results only. Trade excuses and "trying" for results, and expect half-hearted results from half-hearted efforts. Do more than is expected of you. Life's easy when you live it the hard way... and hard if you try to live it the easy way. 7. Truth: The further you move away from accountability, the weaker you become! 8. The strongest force in the human personality is the need to stay consistent with how we define ourselves.

Episode 74: The Fad Will Lead You Back To FAT
The Fad Will Lead You Back To FAT In this episode, I will discuss why the transition from fad diet to a sustainable lifestyle is harder than you think ~ the to evidence proves this to be true. Power Takeaways From This Episode: 1. The hottest fad in the “diet” world is the Ketogenic diet ~ everyone is doing it, trying it, or going to do it ~ companies have shifted their entire product lines to Keto Approved, Keto Friendly, or Keto something. Even Fitness and Nutrition coaches without a strong foundation in longterm results are jumping on the Keto bandwagon in droves too. 2. The Keto diet is basically the Atkins diet on Extreme ~ One key difference between the keto diet, and Atkins is the amount of protein you're allowed to take in. There's no cap on Atkins, while keto limits protein to about 20 percent of your daily calories. On Atkins, you eventually reintroduce carbs, but on keto, carbs are always limited. 3. The bottom line for both Keto, Atkins, and all the other hack and quick-fix diets is that they eventually fail ~ PERIOD. If you don’t believe me write down today's day and set yourself a reminder to send an ‘FU Jay” note to me in one year if you're still rocking keto and having success ~ no breaks, no fall off the wagons, no trying something else you read on the internet. 4. ALL Deprivation and Extreme diets will eventually fail. 5. Outside of the un-sustainability of eating 70% of your calories from fat, 20% from protein, and 10% from carbs for the rest of your life, there are some health reasons why these yo-yo fad diets eventually lead you back to being FAT. 6. How the Fad Yo-Yo rollercoaster you’ve been on for years has your metabolic rate jacked up ~ your body has ZERO clue what the hell you’re doing, and it doesn’t trust you to make good decisions anymore, so it starts to shut down ~ slowly can you blame it? 7. Why your cortisol levels being out of wack is effecting your adrenals and how prolonged increases in cortisol output can lead to adrenal dysfunction resulting in chronic fatigue, thyroid imbalances, depression, anxiety, poor sleep, and a slew of other health issues. 8. How your thyroid hormones going wild leads to weight gain. 9. How a testosterone drop puts women at even more of a disadvantage when dieting considering the already lower levels of testosterone levels (in comparison to men) making muscle building or maintenance, and therefore fat loss, more of a challenge. 10. The bottom line is this guys ~ stop the fad, quick-fix gimmicks and create a nutritional lifestyle plan that is sustainable and manageable forever. 11.  The Dictionary defines TRANSFORMATION as:  ● a thorough or dramatic change in form or appearance ● a metamorphosis during the life cycle of an animal    In this episode, we will discuss the phases of a transformation and how I believe it all begins and even ends on the inside.
