Oppenheimer: A conversation with Nuclear Disarmament Advocate Stephen Schwartz

Oppenheimer: A conversation with Nuclear Disarmament Advocate Stephen Schwartz

I Wasn't Going to see Oppenheimer, but a press briefing and a conversation with an atomic scientist changed my mind. The briefing, hosted by the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, and Win Without War, focused on giving journalists context on the history behind the film.

The panelists Tina Cordova, Co-Founder of Tularosa Basin Downwinders Consortium, Mari Faines, and Nuclear Disarmament Advocate Stephen Schwartz, Senior Fellow, Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, shared the stories of the people we most likely won't see in the film. The Latinx men and women who cleaned nuclear waste without protection cooked and cleaned the scientist's homes in Los Alamos, Navaho uranium miners who are still fighting for the government to cover the costs of their cancer treatments.

This podcast focus on my conversation with Stephen Schwartz about why The United States decided to bomb Japan instead of Germany.

Interview with God's Country Co-writers & Director Shaye Ogbonna and Julian Higgins

Interview with God's Country Co-writers & Director Shaye Ogbonna and Julian Higgins

God's Country is a modern-day western/thriller starring Thandiwe Newton (Westworld) as Sandra, a Black professor navigating her way through a majority white town in a flyover state. She owns a large parcel of land, and the film's conflict heats up when Sandra says no to two white male hunters who want to hunt on her land.

God's Country premieres in theaters nationwide on Friday, September 16th, and I speak with co-writers Shaye Ogbonna and Julian Higgins about their collaborative process in crafting this film. We also talk about storytelling when dealing with challenging subject matter, shooting during a global pandemic, and, of course, joy.
Shaye Ogbonna is "a writer known for God's Country (2022), The Chi (2018), and Lowlife (2017)."
Julian Higgins is "a director and producer, known for God's Country (2022), Thief (2010), and House (2004)."

BONUS: Sarah Jones- Creativity as a Healing Path.

BONUS: Sarah Jones- Creativity as a Healing Path.

Welcome to this bonus episode of VisAbleBlackwoman the podcast. If you are familiar with NYC theater, you know Sarah Jones. Sarah is a gifted storyteller with an uncanny ability to slip in and out of various genders, identities, and ethnicities with powerful impact. Sell/Buy/Date was originally a successful one woman show about Sex work but when word got out that Jones and her team had the opportunity to make the play into a film, there was a backlash.

So, during a global pandemic and while on the verge of being “canceled” Sarah Jones dove deep into her creative core and crafted Sell/Buy/Date brilliantly. Her approach, is to tell the truth of the situation and instead of interviewing sex workers, taking their stories and appropriating them into characters… Sarah visits and interviews sex workers with diverse perspecteives of sex work and the audience is allowed to learn about sex work from sex workers who know the life.

As Sell/Buy/Date prepares for the 2022 San Francisco film festival this week, she was so generous to take a little time out of her busy schedule to talk to me about her creative process. So if you’d like to see the film this week it will be screening at the San Francisco film festival on Sunday, April 24th, at 5:30pm at the Vogue theater CLICK HERE for tickets. (https://sffilm.org/event/sell-buy-date/) Follow Sarah on IG @yesimsarahjones If you loved what you heard today please subscribe, share and give us a positive review wherever you’re listening. Go to Patreon.com/VisAbleBlackwoman to become a sustaining member of VisAbleBlackwoman on Patreon Season 3 of VisAbleBlackwoman the podcast I am exploring the creative process with my favorite creative people.
This week my special guest is Michael James Schneider, my favorite Instagram artist AKA @blcksmith on IG. Michael has attracted 586K followers by creating Memes of funny and inspiring quotes like
"New Rule The Underwear has to stay on longer than the sex lasts."
And one of my favorite quotes by comedian Stephen Szczerba, "Growing up no one tells you that one day you’ll get tired for no reason and just stay that way for the rest of your life."
I discovered Michael’s IG during my time sheltering in place. During that time I developed this terrible insomnia and would wake up at 2:00 in the morning and look at Instagram. Through all my anxiety and fear, his posts made me belly laugh out loud and feel better. Michael is so kind, open, and honest about his creative process. In this interview, we talk about the reality of what life is like as a creator on social media, how being fully transparent about his life on social media taught him how to learn to be more strategic about what he decides to share on social media and where process ends and creativity begins. I hope you enjoy my conversation with artist, Michael James Schneider.

3.3 Talking Intimacy Coordination With Laura Rikard & Chelsea Pace of Theatrical Intimacy Education

3.3 Talking Intimacy Coordination With Laura Rikard & Chelsea Pace of Theatrical Intimacy Education

This week Jeanine has an enlightening conversation with the co-founders and head faculty of Theatrical Intimacy Education (TIE) Laura Rikard and Chelsea Pace about their creative process as intimacy coordinators. Please CLICK HERE to Support VisAbleBlackwoman the podcast by becoming a member of our Patreon community and watch the unedited video of our conversation.
Intimacy coordination became visible in the TV, Film, and theater industries right after the #metoo movement went viral back in 2017. Jeanine first heard of Intimacy coordination when, one of the lead female actors in that HBO series about the Adult film industry The Deuce requested the producers hire an intimacy coordinator to be on set for all of the scenes that involved intimacy, and HBO hired an intimacy coordinator. The same year, HBO required all shows with scenes of intimacy to hire intimacy coordinators to be on set. If you’ve ever wondered what an intimacy coordinator actually does, you are listening to the perfect podcast. Jeanine's conversation begins with Laura as she shares the difference between Intimacy coordination and Intimacy direction, then Jeanine discovers how Chelsea and Laura met and were inspired to pool their resources and create Theatrical Intimacy Education, and they dive deep into the creative process of intimacy direction and talk about TIE’s revolutionary views on certification.
A note from Jeanine," Full disclosure, I've been taking classes with TIE throughout the pandemic and have deep admiration and gratitude to Chelsea, Laura, and the entire theatrical Intimacy Education team for their commitment to this interesting new profession is inspiring and I’m excited for you to hear our conversation."

In the podcast Chelsea talks about The Journal of Consent-Based Performance, ("The Journal of Consent-Based Performance promotes community-based learning among intimacy professionals, without the gatekeeping often associated with scholarly models and the arts industry.")
