Adolescent Institulization, Fleeing Boarding School in Utah in the Winter, Cops Giving Orders Through Car Speakers in Meth Psychosis and Successful Use of a 12 Step Group as Your Higher Power
Today I interview Sam Marks. I met Sam at a Twelve Step meeting and in just a ten minute share knew he had a great and unique story and a powerful message of recovery. After boarding school, Sam moved around the east coast a bit, ultimately ending up in New Jersey, and finds meth and heroin at a young age. The Hardest Episode I've Ever Had to Record...My Husband Relapsed, Everything is a Mess PLUS The Twelve Steps Broken Down
Hey guys...this one is just direct from me, Jeannine, no editing even, just an impromptu solocast. You guys have heard me speak for years about my husband Scuyler, who I love very much - well Scuyler has been struggling in his recovery for the past year and everything is really scary and up in the air. I've not wanted to talk about it for a variety of reasons - which I get into in this episode - but mostly because I just kept hoping everything would go back to normal and this would just a little blip of adversity in the course of our marriage. But...that's not happening. It's been a year and things have continued to escalate and get worse and I need to face the reality of the situation and move into action to take care of myself and Tank. So, while I am hopeful that Scuyler turns things around, I am mentally preparing and processing for the worst and just want to share with you guys what that looks like right now.
Thank you guys for listening as always - love you.

From Junkie to Judge: One Woman's Triumph Over Trauma and Addiction - IV meth use as a teenager, surviving abuse, and finding recovery withOUT a Higher Power with Mary Beth O'Connor
TRIGGER WARNING**
Today Jeannine interviews Mary Beth O'Connor, retired federal judge, author and recovering addict. Mary Beth's book "From Junkie to Judge: One Woman's Triumph over Trauma and Addiction" chronicles the extreme abuse of her childhood, early drug use and ultimately is a guide book for anyone looking to find a recovery that is not centered around a Higher Power concept.
About Mary Beth:
For Mary Beth, childhood abuse and other traumas led to substance use disorder (addiction).
Beginning with alcohol at age 12, she spent several years abusing various drugs. She found methamphetamine at 16 and started shooting up at 17. Mary Beth struggled with meth until she was 32 years old.
By incorporating ideas from multiple sources to build a secular (not 12-step or faith based) recovery plan that works for her, Mary Beth has been sober since 1994. She used similar techniques to address the trauma and related anxiety as well.
Mary Beth is a board member for LifeRing Secular Recovery and She Recovers Foundation. She speaks on behalf of these organizations, about multiple paths to recovery, and about all topics related to substance use disorder and recovery. She also speaks about sexual abuse and rape, child abuse, domestic violence, ptsd, anxiety, and recovering from these as well.
Professionally, 6 years into recovery, Mary Beth attended Berkeley Law. She worked at a large firm in Silicon Valley, then litigated class actions for the federal government. In 2014, Mary Beth was appointed a federal Administrative Law Judge, a position from which she retired in 2020.

Continuing the patterns of addiction she saw modeled in family members, as an adult, Rachael also continued living in the chaos and turmoil of a life in active addiction. Clean now since 2017, Rachael ended up alone - truly completely alone - in prison, indigent, no money on her books, no outside support, nothing. Forced to turn both inward by examining her life up to age 41, and turning outward to the women of Narcotics Anonymous for support, Rachael left prison in 2017 and began the process of changing her life. Rachael's story is a story of incredible resilience and grit and it was an honor to have her on the show. Her inspired and clear description of the "steps" of Twelve Step program work will enhance any listener's recovery journey.
Meet the fierce Southern Mama behind the phone number any addict can call and use drugs while someone listens live to make sure the addict LIVES with Jessie B of Never Use Alone
Today Jeannine interviews Jessie B of the organizations Never Use Alone and 229 Safer Living Access.
Jessie B is in long term recovery from opiate addiction and was inspired by her child's addiction to begin harm reduction outreach in her area. Her impact has now extended far beyond Albany, Georgia now as with Never Use Alone anyone in North America may call the number to use while someone is live on the other end, checking in to make sure the person using doesn't become unresponsive. If the person does become unresponsive, NUA contacts medical services for the person. With 100,000 phone calls recorded and 97 overdose saves, NUA is enabling human beings living with substance use disorder to have a better quality of life - no matter WHAT.

Jeannine and Nate interview Will out of Portland, Maine. Will was a long time heroin addict and alcoholic who had done the rounds in twelve step with little success until landing in what he describes as a "twelve step bootcamp." Sober now since October of 2011, Will shares his experience with the twelve steps as they were taught to him in a subtle but clear manner that finally worked.

Tools to regulate our emotions to strengthen and enhance our relationships, avoid unnecessary conflict and live a more emotionally balanced life through DBT with Dr. Laura Petracek
Today Jeannine interviews Dr. Laura Petracek, Phd.
Dr. Laura Petracek is a Clinical Psychologist, author, and speaker who has over thirty years of experience in the field of psychotherapy.
Jeannine and Dr Petracek discuss her latest book, "The DBT Workbook for Alcohol and Drug Addiction." When recovering from addiction and managing a mental illness, it can feel like both have the ability to take over your life. By applying the principles of Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) to your recovery program, this workbook equips you with the tools to regulate your emotions, develop self-management skills, reduce anxiety and stress, and feel yourself again.
DBT is a combination of CBT, mindfulness, and distress tolerance skills tailored to those who feel emotions very intensely. Exploring skills and strategies drawn from DBT that work in tandem with your recovery program, this book provides a new roadmap to reduce symptoms of emotional distress and to support your sobriety and mental health.
This ground-breaking workbook draws on the author’s clinical and lived experience of addiction recovery, bipolar disorder, and other mental health challenges.
Jeannine asks Laura for specific tools for regulating emotions in a heated moment, as well as tools to assist with urges or craving with behaviors one would like to change or quit.
