2024 Oscar Nominations Reactions

The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced on January 23rd. I'm here to discuss the nominees in each of the top eight above the line categories. What I’ll be doing is go through them one by one, reading out loud all the nominees, give my thoughts, and share some interesting insights about them. From screenplay, to acting, to directing, to the biggest one of all, Best Picture. I also acknowledge the recent passings of Oscar nominees Glynis Johns and Norman Jewison.

Tommy Stovall & Marc Sterling on CONDITION OF RETURN

Tommy Stovall & Marc Sterling are a pair of filmmakers behind a new movie titled CONDITION OF RETURN. It’s currently out on streaming platforms on Apple TV+, YouTube Movies, GooglePlay, Vudu/Fandango, and Amazon Prime Video. I had the great pleasure of interviewing them about this and more.

Tommy Stovall is a writer, director, producer, and editor. Originally from Llano TX, a small rural town in the Texas Hill Country, he started his own video production company while in college at the University of Texas at Austin, where he received a degree in Radio-TV-Film. His first feature film was the multiple award-winning Hate Crime starring SethPeterson and Bruce Davison, which he wrote, directed, and produced. He received high critical acclaim for his directorial debut and won “Best Director” at the Breckenridge Festival ofFilm. He then wrote and directed Sedona, a comedic drama starring Frances Fisher, which was selected to screen at the prestigious Hollywood Film Festival. Aaron’s Blood, his third film as writer/director, won him the Golden Stake Award for “Best Feature” at the inaugural International Vampire Film & Arts Festival in Transylvania, along with several other festival awards that followed for “Best Feature”, “Best Director” and “Best Screenplay”. His 2019 film Room for Rent, a thriller starring horror icon Lin Shaye, received tremendous reviews and continues to be a huge success on VOD.

Marc is Vice President of Pasidg Productions, Inc. and serves as producer and production accountant for all of our projects. A highly accomplished businessman, speaker, teacher, and real estate developer, Marc has a B.A. in Accounting from the University of Texas. Marc started and grew successful accounting practices in both Dallas, TX and Sedona, AZ, servicing thousands of clients over the years, before selling both businesses. He now manages his current accounting practice based in Cottonwood, AZ. He has successfully produced four feature films: the multiple award-winning Hate Crime (2005), Sedona (2012), Aaron’s Blood (2017) and Room for Rent (2019).

Noah Colvin & Lilly Pritchard of the 2023 Triangle Rising Star Awards

Noah Colvin & Lilly Pritchard of the 2023 Triangle Rising Star Awards

Last month, the 2023 Triangle Rising Star Awards took place at the Durham Performing Arts Center. This regional competition brings together high school musical theater students from Central and Eastern North Carolina to perform and compete for the chance to represent the Triangle in The National High School Musical Theater (otherwise known as The Jimmy) Awards in New York City on June 26th. The national competition celebrates outstanding student performances in high school musical productions from all over the United States. Shortly after the Triangle Rising Star Awards, I had the great pleasure of going backstage at DPAC to interview both of this year's winners, Noah Colvin of Enloe High School and Lilly Pritchard of Heritage High School. The two of them discuss their experiences with this year's competition, their excitement for the Jimmy Awards, and more.

Remembering Ben Lipitz (1964-2023) of Broadway's THE LION KING

Remembering Ben Lipitz (1964-2023) of Broadway's THE LION KING

Back in 2016, the national tour of THE LION KING played a month-long engagement at the Durham Performing Arts Center in Durham, North Carolina. Prior to that, I was able to interview actor Ben Lipitz for BroadwayWorld by phone. At the time, he was in the show as Pumbaa, a part he played for more than 6,000 performances through both the tour and Broadway productions. Ben recently passed away on April 18th at the age of 58. So what I decided to do is share with all of you the aforementioned interview. I've also included a snippet from a conversation I had with the tour's head carpenter at the time, Billy Kimbley, as the show was loading into DPAC a few days before the run began.

Ben Lipitz's previous stage credits included RED, HOT, AND BLUE (Goodspeed Opera, Papermill Playhouse); JUST SO (Goodspeed Opera); ART; DIRTY BLONDE; LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR; A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM; Cleveland Playhouse, Kennedy Center, Walnut St. Theatre. TV: THE SOPRANOS, LAW & ORDER, 100 CENTRE ST., HOMICIDE. Film: THE GIRAFFE and FIND ME GUILTY (directed by Sidney Lumet).

Itamar Moses on AN AMERICAN TAIL and THE BAND'S VISIT

From April 25th-June 18th, the Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis, Minnesota will be presenting the world premiere of a stage adaptation of the 1986 Academy Award nominated animated film, AN AMERICAN TAIL. This is a commissioned production in association with Universal Theatrical Group. I recently had the great pleasure of interviewing Itamar Moses, who's the book writer and co-lyricist behind this particular project. He’s written episodes of a few different TV shows such as MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, BOARDWALK EMPIRE, OUTSIDERS, and THE AFFAIR. Not to mention that he also happens to be the Tony-winning book writer behind THE BAND’S VISIT.

News of the Month (February 2023)

News of the Month (February 2023)

Welcome back to News of the Month, where I talk about a few different entertainment news stories that feel important and/or interesting to me. The nominations for this year’s Academy Awards were announced on January 24th. I also acknowledge the passings of Frank Galati, Melinda Dillon, Lisa Marie Presley, Cindy Williams, and Lisa Loring.
