Delmarva's Own Asian Cuisine Extravaganza: Kaiju Sushi and Ramen Bar
On this episode of the Delmarva's Own podcast, Randy and Jeff met with Nicole Lin. Nicole, along with her husband, Jackie Chan, own two restaurants on Delmarva. The first, Manna Asian Cuisine, opened in Salisbury, MD in 2018. The second, Kaiju Sushi and Ramen Bar opened in 2021 in Berlin, MD, (or West Ocean City, if you prefer...) and was the setting for our conversation with Nicole. We talked about the food, of course, but also about the difficulties of living in China, her move to the United States, settling on Delmarva and finally becoming a United States citizen. We even try to pull a secret out of Nicole. Do she and Jackie have plans for a third restaurant? Sounds like they might!
Delmarva's Own: 47ABC News Anchor, Jordie Clark
Jordie Clark is the Morning and Midday News Anchor at 47ABC-WMDT. While 47ABC broadcasts out of Salisbury, MD, Jordie was born, raised, and still lives in Sussex County, Delaware. A graduate of Woodbridge High School, Jordie went on to Study Journalism and Political Science at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia where she also played NCAA Division II Softball. Upon graduation Jordie returned home, joined the team at WMDT, and now spends her professional hours telling the stories of her local community and neighbors.

Delmarva's Own: Mogan's Oyster House
This episode is about Mogan's Oyster House. You'll want to listen to this story of triumph, because... When history looks back at some of the worst times to open a restaurant, we can be sure that October 2019 will be listed as the wrong time to launch such an endeavor. But, nobody planned to open a new restaurant just before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. It was just unfortunate timing. Restaurants closed by the thousands around the country, unable to remain financially viable as the United States shut down into various states of quarantine. But for some reason, as restaurants with decades of business success began to close, one of the newest eateries on Delmarva not only survived, but grew. This episode is about the story of how Denny Mogan came to open Mogan's Oyster House on Main Street in Salisbury, Maryland, how it thrived during the pandemic and a devastating medical diagnosis for the owner, and how they continue to be a local favorite. We were joined by the General Manager of Mogan's Oyster House, Mike Daly. Mike is a life long resident of Delmarva and calls Salisbury home. His industry expertise and love for his place of employment shone clear as he reminisced about the early days of Mogan's, his time learning about the restaurant industry while living in New York city as he chased Broadway dreams, and how he brought his expertise to grease the inner workings of Mogan's. Mogan's Oyster House is located at 100 East Main Street in Salisbury, Maryland. They are open every day 11:30AM - 9PM.
Delmarva's Own Champion Builder: Branden Hudson of SBY MMA
Brandon Hudson, owner of SBY MMA (Salisbury Mixed Martial Arts), is a champion fighter and fighter for champions. It wasn't always this way. There was a time when his life was a mess - a multi-faceted quagmire of multiple personas which landed him in jail, a convicted felon. We'd tell you what made the difference, but that's what the podcast is for. It will suffice to say that Hudson has accepted his journey, and defined a new destination in life. His motivation in life is to be genuine, reach for his dreams, and help others do the same. For him, it's simple...set a goal, work towards it, and tune out all the other noise. It's less about fighting others, and more about battling for success.

In this episode Jeff is joined by Jody Shulz. Together with his brothers and family, Jody owns several establishments in what has come to be known as Fisherman's Village. Today Jody tells us the story of how this area grew from the earliest days of Fishermans Inn, to include the Fisherman's Crab Deck and Seafood Market, and coming soon, the Hyatt Place Hotel. Jody has also joined with some partners and launched two additional business - a Boatel, the Dock House Restaurant.
Fisherman's Village, the Kent Narrow Boatel, and the Dock House Restaurant are located off of Route 50 exits 41 or 42, just east of Kent Island and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

Brent Lewis was born and raised on Delmarva, in the Kent Narrows region. He learned to appreciate reading and writing from his mother, and learned the value and art of storytelling from his father and other watermen like him. Given his understanding of Delmarva and its people, there wasn't really any better person to tell the story of how Hollywood has made it's mark on the region, for better or worse. Brent joins Jeff and Randy in this episode to talk about his most recent book, Stardust by the Bushel: Hollywood on the Chesapeake Bay's Eastern Shore.

American Idol Contestant, Jay Copeland
American Idol contestant, Jay Copeland is a native of Salisbury, MD, the Jewel City of Delmarva. Jay joined Jeff and Randy to talk about his experience on the show. He drops some news about the upcoming episode, his feelings about Lionel Richie being elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and whether or not he'd do it all over again.
The Water's Edge Museum, Part 1: The Middle Passage
This is the first episode of three which will be dedicated to the Water's Edge Museum located in Oxford, Maryland. As the museum's website states, The Water’s Edge Museum was established to tell the story of "...The Founding Black Families of America who harnessed knowledge and power, and placed it firmly and confidently into the hands of their descendants." Oxford was chosen as the location for the museum due to Oxford being the only documented arrival port for the Middle Passage, one of the trade routes during the years of the American and European slave trade.
In this episode, Jeff and Randy are joined (once again!) by Dr. Clara Small to discuss just what the Middle Passage actually was.

Delmarva's Own...and the Country's Only...3-Way Baseball Champion, Troy Brohawn
Troy Brohawn coaches the Salisbury University baseball team. Under his leadership, the team and coaching staff won the first NCAA Division III Baseball National Championship. Prior to this, Coach Brohawn led his high school alma mater to a state championship. And, even before that, in 2001, he won a World Series as a member of the Arizona Diamondbacks. As far as we can tell, Brohawn is the only person to achieve these three championships in their career.

In this episode, Jeff shares a story pulled from the Eastern Shore Writers Association anthology, Bay to Ocean: The Year's Best Writing from the Eastern Shore. The story is from the 2019 edition, and is titled Why Real Men Cry at Boston Symphony Hall. It's a story about a boy and his grandma and their love for John Williams, the famed American composer.

Dr. Kirkland Hall - Delmarva's Own Baseball Historian
Dr. Kirkland Hall joined Delmarva's Own Podcast in February as the last conversation for episodes directly related to Black History Month. So, we're a bit late getting this one out.
Dr. Hall spent his life and career as an educator, community activist, and minister. Frankly, this description does a disservice to the amount of work Dr. Hall has done in the Delmarva community, particularly in the lower Eastern Shore of Maryland. He also played baseball on a historically black baseball team which originated early in the 1900's. Dr. Hall tells us about his time playing on the team and the way black baseball teams impacted communities on Delmarva.

Delmarva's Own Freedom Fighter: Harriet Tubman - The Early Years
This episode is about former enslaved person, abolitionist leader and Underground Railroad Conductor, Harriet Tubman. Harriet grew up in bondage in the area of Cambridge, Maryland. I met with Lawson Nwakudo, a guide at the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad National Historical Park to discuss Harriet's earliest years, when she would have been known as Araminta "Minty" Ross. We talk about her birth, the tasks she performed while enslaved and the injury that almost killed her. As it turns out, this injury may have been the turning point for little Minty, and placed her on a trajectory that would help change America.

Delmarva's Own Black History Authority: Dr. Clara Small
This week we are joined by Dr. Clara Small to help us begin to dig in to the vast treasure-trove of history available to us.
Dr. Small is a historian who has dedicated her life to telling the story of black Americans from Delmarva. Professor Emeritus at Salisbury University, Hall spent 36 years teaching history in courses including World Civilizations, Civil Rights in American Society, African American History and related topics. It might be argued that she is the region's foremost scholar on the history of Black America on the Delmarva Peninsula.
Dr. Small has authored or co-authored 7 books, with her 8th due out before the leaves bud out on the trees this spring. Titles include:
- Reality Check: Brief Biographies of African-Americans on Delmarva
- Compass Points: Profiles & Biographies of African Americans from the Delmarva Peninsula, Volumes 1,2, & 3 [Publication Forthcoming]
Co-Authored:
- Men of Color: To Arms! Manumitted Slaves and Free Blacks from the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland Who Served in the Civil War
- They Wore Blue and Their Hearts Were Loyal: The United States Colored Troops of Dorchester County Maryland
Her work has garnered her acclaim and recognition resulting in numerous awards including:
- University System of Maryland Regent’s Award for Public Service
- Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore’s Frank H. Morris Humanitarian Award
- The Harriet Tubman Lifetime Achievement Award
Dr. Small has also served as a member of the Maryland Commission on African American History and Culture.

Jake Day is the Mayor of Salisbury, Maryland.
At the time of this recording, Jake was on active duty, stationed in Djibouti in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, America's war on terror. Jake is one of three sitting Mayors to have been in active duty while holding office.

Stephanie Fowler - Delmarva's Own Author and Publisher
Originally from Salisbury, MD, Stephanie Fowler is a graduate of Parkside High-School. She earned her college degree in creative writing at Washington College in Chester, Maryland where she was awarded the Sophie Kerr Prize, the largest undergraduate prize in literature in the United States. The winning collection of stories about Delmarva was entitled Crossings and published in 2008.
In the fall of 2020 Stephanie published her second work, Chasing Alice, the result of a six-year dedication of love in tribute to her high school English teacher, Alice Davis, who was tragically murdered by her husband. Stephanie joined Delmarva's Own podcast to share why Mrs. Davis was so inspirational to her and so many others and why Stephanie made it her mission to tell her story.
In May 2013 Stephanie opened SaltWater Publishing in Berlin, Maryland to help local authors with self-publishing and tech services. Their tech-specialty is Apple products so before you cross the bridge to visit the Annapolis Apple store, give SaltWater Media a call. It's kinda their thing.
She is the co-host of the “So What’s Your Story” Podcast and has appeared on the “What You Should Read” podcast with Kelly Hager and Julia and Rachel Hall, the “Foul Play” podcast with Shane Waters and Gemma Hoskins, and “Mybookcart and More” with Hanna and Cari.

Ferry Operator Ray Hoffman
Ray Hoffman operates the Upper Ferry on the Wicomico River. The Upper Ferry is one of three cable ferries on the Delmarva Peninsula. The others are the Whitehaven Ferry, again crossing the Wicomico, and the Woodland Ferry, which crosses the Nanticoke River.
