Molly Welch - A Second Later
It was winter her junior year of college and Molly was writing for “The Plainsman” at Auburn University. She had completed an interview on a hand-held recorder and was driving back to campus to write her article. Eager to start her latest assignment, Molly briefly looked down to hit the record button on her device, recording the entire accident on tape.
“A second later,” her entire life changed.
Listen to the podcast to find out more!
More about Molly Welch:
Thirteen years ago, I was in a head-on collision with a pick-up truck that caused a traumatic brain injury. I was in a coma for three weeks and had a 50-50 chance of living. Later, I was only minimally conscious for months. Next I had to re-learn everything from walking to talking. The doctors thought I’d be in an immobile state the rest of my life. In fact, one doctor told my parents that I may not wake up, but if I did, “the sky would be the limit.”
Not emerging from the coma at the hospital, Molly was sent home where she eventually came out of the coma.
I had to undergo years of extensive physical, occupational and speech therapy at Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. Because of the impact on my health and time, it took me an extra three years to graduate from Auburn. These life changing events were the result of distracted driving.
Hard work and hope gave me a second chance at life as well as the realization that my story could be the catalyst for change. To this day, I’ve made it my mission to create awareness about distracted driving. I absolutely don’t want what happened to me to happen to anyone else.
In 2017, I produced a public service announcement together with key individuals to help spread my message to drivers everywhere. It aired in several states. From there, I was inspired to start my own non-profit, motivational speaking company, A Second Later. Through my organization, I’ve been able to tell my story to schools, businesses, professional organizations, civic groups, and even legislators in the State of Georgia.
