Ep 11: The Magic of Home Birth With First Time Mom Kaitlyn
Ep. 10: Navigating Pregnancy & Childbirth With Confidence - With Alex Barr
In this podcast episode, Alex Bar, owner of Dare to Birth and a full spectrum doula, opens up about her journey into birth work sparked by facing discrimination during her own pregnancy. Discovering a gap in accessible and compassionate care, she shifted her focus to education. The discussion delves into the challenges of being treated as a number rather than an individual with unique needs during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.
Alex emphasizes the significance of mental preparation alongside physical readiness for this transformative journey. The episode explores pelvic health and stresses the importance of seeking compassionate practitioners for support and education on understanding one's body. Alex introduces her childbirth education company, Dare To Birth, offering in-person and virtual classes.
Dr. Jocelyn Connelly, the host, underlines the often overlooked and under-discussed topic of pelvic health. The conversation touches on societal stigma and encourages listeners to seek support. Alex, an educator specializing in childbirth, shares insights from her childbirth education classes. She advocates for self-advocacy during childbirth, mental and physical preparation, and the value of comprehensive education beyond hospital-based classes.

The Impact Of Grief and Loss On Injury Risk & Healing With Dr. Megan Daley
We all experience some degree of loss throughout our lives. Loss can be death of a loved one, loss of an identity, etc... and it impacts our threshold for injury, pain, and overall healing. In this episode Dr. Jocelyn & Dr. Megan talk about how loss and physical healing intersect.
About our guest...
Dr. Megan grew up as an athlete (and academic), getting injured and being in and out of physical therapy herself. She got her undergrad degree in mathematics in SC, even though she knew she wanted to work in healthcare, and then moved to AZ to get her doctorate in physical therapy. She spent the first several years of practice in corporate healthcare, going to many continuing education weekends and searching for her own mentors. And well, this episode includes why she’ll never work with insurance again and why her focus is on preventative care and connecting physical, mental, and emotional health.
She spends her time teaching for the Institute of Clinical Excellence on the weekends (faculty since 2017), treating patients at her own Out Of Network clinic during the week (with a fitness and mindset forward approach), competing in Olympic weightlifting, and hiking/snowboarding/camping as much as possible, preferably with her boyfriend and her corgi.

Episode 12: Real Talk On Diastasis Recti With Lisa Ryan, Part II
Part II of Lisa's journey recovering from #diastasisrecti and #diastasisrectirepair surgery. In this episode we cover her recovery after surgery, her journey getting back to #crossfit (again), and her thoughts on marketing around diastasic recti.
Be sure to listen to part I first if you haven't!
Episode 11: Real Talk On Diastasis Recti With Lisa Ryan Part I
In this episode, Lisa shares her story on #diastasisrecti. We talk about the mental and physical recovery process after baby 1, baby 2... her decision to have surgery, finding a surgeon, and recovering physically and mentally after the surgery. There was too much fire to include it all in 1 episode. Part 1 is her journey up to when she has surgery. Part 2 will be getting the surgery, recovering, and then us talking about how to find the right surgeon for you.
A little bit about my friend Lisa...
Lisa has been doing CrossFit since 2004 and a former regional level competitor (2010 - 2013). She a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer and also a Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism Specialist. After having her second son, she decided to change careers from a high school English teacher of 12 years to a pregnancy and postpartum athleticism trainer. She never thought she would change careers; however, this has become her heart project that she cannot ignore. She am on a mission to help moms avoid the misinformation, confusion, panic, pain, and fear that she experienced during her return to fitness. Even though advertisements on social media show a “one size fits all” answer for postpartum fitness, each situation is drastically different.
After having her own #abdominoplasty #tummy tuck procedure she has found that it even more rare for women to have specific guidance on return to fitness after “clearance” from the surgeon. Each woman needs a unique plan depending on surgery procedure and movement goals; but, there is a way to recover with intention and progressive strategy. Helping women recover from these surgeries has become another passion of hers, along with normalizing the length of the process.
By really listening to each woman’s story, She provide an individualized approach to both empower them and help them heal their mind and body.
Lisa offers group classes, personal training, consultations, and remote coaching services. You can find her and her social media through my website: www.lisa-ryan.com.
