Markuann Smith | Becoming the Producer/Creator/Actor of TV Show Godfather of Harlem
Markuann Smith is the Producer, Creator, and Actor of hit TV Show Godfather of Harlem, an American crime drama television series starring Forest Whitaker as the 1960s New York City Gangster Ellsworth Bumpy Johnson. You have probably heard of Bumpy in the movie American Gangster. Bumpy was a close associate to Frank Lucas (played by Denzel Washington) and took over after Lucas had past. Did I mention that this is all based on his Godmother’s life? Crazy! As a man that grew up in Harlem, then Far Rock Queens, Markuann has seen and experienced quite a lot in his lifetime. Camille Darby is the VP of Brand Marketing for the Lifestyle Division of Conde Nast. Conde Nast is a global media company with extensions across print, digital, video, social and experiential (think Met Gala). In her role, she oversees initiatives for 7 of the publications at Conde Nast including Allure, Architectural Digest, Bon Appetit, Epicurious, Conde Nast Traveler, Glamour, and Self. To be specific, here is what each publication focused on:
- Allure is beauty
- Architectural Digest is home/interior design
- Bon Appetit and Epicurious cover food, cooking, and restaurants
- Conde Nast Travel is all things travel
- Glamour focuses on the everyday woman and her interests as well as female empowerment
- Self focuses on health and wellness.
With the responsibility of overseeing these publications, Camille’s role is to work closely with each editorial team across those 7 publications and identify unique marketing opportunities that not only help to advance the brand's unique selling proposition in the marketplace, but also drive revenue through advertising partnerships. She kicked off her professional career as an Events Coordinator for a marketing team at Lord & Taylor (fashion), but walks us through exactly how she went from that role to VP status in this interview.

She has gotten to work on new pieces in various developmental fellowships and has had some pieces published and produced.She has also taken her storytelling talents to being a digital creator which is something new for her but is enjoying. Miguel has been an educator for the past two years having taught at GA and currently teaching at CareerFoundry. He recently founded Inclusion Design Lab, an educational platform for UX beginners focusing on teaching Inclusive Design methods and principles. He is also the founder of Rita Creative, an agency turned startup supporting creative initiatives led by women and people of color at scale.
Before UX, Miguel was a Front-end Developer and then a UI Designer. He’s been building digital products for over 9 years and has been loving every bit of it!
