2023 Keene Central School 8th Grade Stories
For the third year in a row, 8th graders at Keene Central School told brief stories about growing up in the Town of Keene. Their themes included resilience, animals, camping, and several stories about family.

2022 Keene Central School 12th Grade Stories
For the second year in a row, 12th graders at Keene Central School told brief stories about growing up in the Town of Keene. The one word that describes all their stories is PASSION: for competing statewide in the Science Olympiad, the joys of growing up in the Adirondacks, using one’s voice, and working at our local library,

Music in the Mountains

Music and nature are strongly connected. Just as the view from a mountain summit or the crunch of fallen leaves can evoke joy or a sense of nostalgia, so too does the echo of a bow across strings or the harmony of a chorus of voices. Today we will be listening to stories from local musicians, learn about their music, their inspiration, and will even get to listen to some of their music.

As heard in Part 1, In August 2011 Tropical Storm Irene produced heavy damage over much of New York and in Keene it was devastating. The storm is ranked as one of the costliest in the history of New York State, with the impact on our residents' lives felt to this day. In fact, with Route 73 washed out, we were isolated and landslides on the High Peaks were prevalent. The firsthand accounts you will hear in two podcasts were difficult for some to tell even now, but once again, this community came together to get through unimaginable challenges.

On March 11, 2020, COVID 19 was declared a global pandemic and even in the quiet, rural Town of Keene, the world changed. Businesses shut down, school went remote, and community members struggled with isolation, grief, and fear. These stories were recorded within the first six months of the pandemic.

Keene and Keene Valley are home to the majestic High Peaks—the highest mountains in New York State. In 1925, guide Herbert Clark and brothers Robert and George Marshall became the first 46ers, by climbing all 46 peaks that were registered over 4000 feet. Since then, over 12,000 people have become 46ers. Today, the hiking industry is booming in Keene and Keene Valley.

Our podcast today is titled Black Lives Matter. In the year 2021, the majority of Adirondack citizens are white, with most towns 92 to 98% Caucasian. Yet, even here, the fight for racial justice is strong.
Adirondack Hiking Stories
Adirondack hiking is a phrase that elicits high emotion these days, in ways you might not expect. Why? Our mountains have made the Town of Keene a destination since the late 1800s, but are also why our roads are too crowded in summer and emergency services stretched. Many of us are working on the solutions to share our magnificent mountains in a better way. These stories of Adirondack hiking from the 1800s to the present will help you understand their almost magical impact and how important it is to preserve them for future generations. Note that a 46’er has summited all the Adirondack High Peaks, each over 4,000 rugged feet high.
