Hello! I am a yoga teacher and yoga therapist in Austin, Texas.
I help make yoga teachings relevant to your life today.

What you're about to hear is the opening of my public yoga class where I introduce an idea that I hope you can use on the mat...and OFF the mat... in your everyday life. Then we'll set an intention, and do some guided breathing.

You can listen to this while you're driving, or doing the dishes, or maybe you can take a break...just STOP. Get CENTERED...before moving on with your day.

59. Brahmacharya: Balance and Boundaries
Your energy is a precious gift.  It is a unique resource that must be replenished and protected. It is a gift to be shared through healthy participation.  It is nourished through your attention, self-care, and thoughtful discrimination. In this week's podcast I talk more about Brahmacharya in our everyday lives, and we tune in to how our energy is feeling right now and where it is felt in our bodies. To learn more about Brahmacharya and healthy BOUNDARIES, check out my blog post: www.jessgyoga.com/social May you always remember to be a loving gatekeeper of your precious energy.

58. Asteya: Generosity
Asteya is usually translated as non-stealing. But I know that most of you aren't shoplifters or bank robbers, so we have to look deeper ;) What if that book you keep on your shelf but will never read again steals the opportunity for someone else to read it?  Isn't accepting accolades or credit for something you didn't do the same as stealing? When greed seeps in and makes us want more for ourselves than we need, there is poverty of spirit and stealing of resources. The thing about going to get more than is yours, or taking someone else's, is that it prevents your true wealth from flowing into you. In this week's podcast, learn how to breathe with a non-stealing rhythm of life, flowing from reverence, to gratitude, generosity, to patience. Read more about applying Asteya to your life on my blog. www.jessgyoga.com

57. Aparigraha: Abundance
Aparigraha reminds us of the ABUNDANCE of life. It is the clinging that shows we forgot. As Nischala Joy Devi puts it in The Secret Power of Yoga, "Life's ebb and flow brings things into our life and then out again.  Even the slightest hesitation of holding impedes the flow...If you believe that material and spiritual blessings are infinite, a cornucopia awaits you." In this week's podcast, I talk more about Aparigraha, and we practice breathing into a sense that there is enough.  We couple this with gratitude, which is the antidote to scarcity. For more on aparigraha,  visit my blog, Unfolding on the Mat.  www.jessgyoga.com/blog

56. Satya: Truth
This week I'm here to tell you: You CAN handle the truth! In fact, not only can you handle it, you ARE it. But sometimes we can't see it.  We do not see by the Light of Truth within, so we can't see the Light of Truth around us.  Things like inner conflict, lack of sleep, poor diet, increased stress, and lack of movement cloud our perception.  We start to see the world as ugly, lacking, and dark.  We are more easily fooled by the illusion of separateness and scarcity.  Attachments and aversions creep in and create suffering. We get a lot of dross covering up our golden joy. In this week's podcast, I discuss the second YAMA of SATYA, or Truth.  In its most basic form, SATYA takes the form of controlling speech so as not to lie.  But beyond that, when you establish your life in Truth, it "burns away the dross"(B.K.S Iyengar, Light on Yoga) and reveals a life of abundance. Interested in a yoga practice to burn away the dross?  Go to my Blog Page and get started!

55. Ahimsa: Non-violence
In this week's podcast, we are informed by BKS Iyengar's Light on Yoga to help us wrap our heads around going beyond non-violence and into love of all.  We are encouraged to EXPERIENCE what we believe, not just think about it.    Start by experiencing it in your own body--pain can be thought of as the body's signal that there is some violence going on.  Stop, back off, breathe, and re-enter what you are doing with more attention, ease, and self-compassion.  Or perhaps change your activity entirely.  Sometimes it's helpful to treat your body the way you want your best friend or partner to treat their's.  Then take the practice to the world. We're all complaining that the country is divided, right? Do your part to practice love of ALL. The next time you catch yourself thinking negatively about someone or a group of people, try THE 7 STEPS OF AHIMSA at www.jessgyoga.com/blog Let me know how it goes! I love to have stories to draw from for my teaching. Your experience could help someone else, so don't be shy! May the world you create within and around you be one of love, compassion, and non-violence. Love, Jess

54. Curate a Life That Sparks Joy
I am excited today to share my very first interview! In this conversation, we talk about how the space you call home has its own energy, and the things within it can either support or suppress joy in your life. We talk about the KonMari Method™ of home organization and how it relates to yoga.  This is all in excited anticipation of Making SPACE, our upcoming Yoga + KonMari Workshop, Sunday, September 8, in South Austin. www.jessgyoga.com Making Space Tickets ---------------------------------------- PDF: 3 Strategies to Curate SPACE in Your Life:  ---------------------------------------- Erin Mursch, of Organized for Good ATX, is a home organizing consultant based in Austin, TX. Her passion for order and transformation have been apparent all her life, from her days lovingly tidying up her roommates' closets to tidying up spreadsheets in her first professional job.  After experiencing the Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up herself in 2015, Erin trained with Marie Kondo to become Austin's first Certified KonMari Consultant. She has now logged more than a thousand hours of tidying in spaces of all sizes and shapes with clients of all circumstances and backgrounds. She uses empathy, positive energy, and expertise to support and guide clients wherever they find themselves along their decluttering journey.  ---------------------------------------- Angela Kelley is founder of Buffalo Roam, a movement to make space for possibility and connections through serendipity and sagacity. 53. Space as a Spiritual Practice
I first watched the Netflix show “Tidying Up with Marie Kondo” back in June, and it really left an impression! Now I think about the space I’m in as a deeper part of my experience of Spirit. In this week’s podcast, learn to acknowledge both the space around you and within you as ALIVE with energy! Realize that the STUFF in your space might be blocking your energy. Take a moment of GRATITUDE and shift the energy of the space around you, and feel how it affects your body and mind 🙂🙏 If you’re in the AUSTIN area on September 8, I’d love for you to join me for a workshop called Making S P A C E. We will learn from Erin Mursch of Organized for Good, how to make simple changes towards a mindset of ease within your space, surrounded only by things that spark joy. Jess G Yoga and the Kon Mari Method come together to practice letting go of what keeps you from your natural ENERGY: inner JOY. Season 1 of the podcast has come to an end, my time teaching at the same studio for 10 years has ended, and we’re in a new space. Whew, what a journey! .. As we begin a new chapter of practicing together, I’m reminded of the very first sutra, and that all yoga teaching begins with the timeless, ever-present Now. We start at Now with every practice. .. Season 1 Finale: The Grid, and THANK YOU
What do a seagull, a tree, and driving in the dark have in common? Trust. Listen for how staying plugged in to the universal flow of energy helps us trust that the Divine is working out an intricate web of care and keeping. This is my final class at YogaYoga, where I have grown and taught for 15 years. My heart is full of gratitude, and I take this chance to say it 💗🙏

“You just can’t skip Day 2.” As our time together in class at Yoga Yoga comes to an end, we’ve all been moving through the transition and all the feels. In her book Rising Strong, Dr. Brené Brown explains that in any process, Day 2 is the day of hard work, the icky part. A NECESSARY part. But there is a Day 3...

Ep 46: PRACTICE (not product)
Does meditation seem like a good idea to you, but darn if you can't do it? Does your mind jump around like a monkey in the jungle?  YOU ARE NOT ALONE! In this week's podcast, I talk about my busy mind one morning when it just wouldn't settle.  But rather than getting frustrated, I settled into the idea that it's a PRACTICE, not a perfection or a result.  It's an ongoing process, hopefully moving in the direction of getting easier, but there are ups and downs along the way.   What if you looked at all of life like a practice, instead of a product?... Just so you know, I'm going a bit dark in June, so you'll be hearing from me a little less. But there are now over 45 podcast episodes covering so much material, I know you'll want to catch up!  While I'm "away," I'll be letting you in on what is taking my attention... I am creating my very first DIGITAL COURSE!!  A new way to learn and use the Chakra system is taking shape--but it needs my full attention!  I'll let you in behind the scenes on Facebook and Instagram, and I'll check in with my email list couple times, I'm sure.   Then I hope to be back in full swing later this summer/fall.  So, if you haven't yet, please take a moment and SUBSCRIBE to this podcast.  And if you like what you hear, I'd love for you to leave a review :) May you find every opportunity to remember life is a PRACTICE, not a product, and may that bring you ease and joy this week. Much love, Jess

Ep 45: Flex Your Self-Trust Muscle
I have a question for you: do you trust yourself?  I thought I did, until I had a little lesson from a caterpillar nibbling on my foot (which I talk about in this week's podcast :)   So as I begin doing the Work of building trust with myself, I look to Yoga to see what my experience is there, and what the texts have to say.   First, you probably already know that yoga helps you know yourself better.  The simple act of moving and breathing in a connected and mindful way begins to shed light on mental habits, energy level fluctuations, emotional blockages, and relationship to body, just to name a few.  Triangle pose one day does not feel the same as Triangle pose another. Then you notice things off the mat, like increased blood pressure under certain circumstances, racing pulse after that third cup of coffee, mental agitation after too much screen time, etc.  Here's what happens to Arjuna in Chapter One of the Bhagavad Gita, as translated by Stephen Mitchell: "As I see my own kinsmen, gathered here, eager to fight, my legs weaken, my mouth dries, my body trembles, my hair stands on end, my skin burns...I am beside myself, my mind reels." - That looks like a panic attack to me! He's so aware of how his system operates he can name his body's response.  So, feeling this way, he puts down his sword in dismay, then begins to listen and reflect.  Building trust with yourself means moving away from danger when your body gives a signal. It means listening to the rhythms of your energy and honoring those limitations. Your body trusts you when you give it what it needs.  Doing this again and again is like building muscles for strength--flex, flex, flex your trust muscle!   May you find every opportunity to build self-trust by nourishing, resting, and listening to yourself this week.  Much love, Jess

Ep 44: Balance
These days I'm thinking all about BALANCE, as in that mythical life balance we all seem to strive for, with varying degrees of success.  This week's podcast has a little chat about balance and how it evades us when we cling to it.  Sometimes to remain balanced, we must actually TILT in one direction. Food for thought, huh? One of the most important things we can do in seeking balance, is know who/what takes us OUT of balance.  Observe yourself throughout your day and notice when you feel off kilter. What are your surroundings? Who did you just communicate with? What did you take in that day?  I recorded a BONUS guided meditation this week to help you discover what your triggers might be, and maybe even begin to change their impact on you and your sense of ease.  https://www.jessgyoga.com/imbalance-triggers.html   As always, I'd love to hear from you.  How do you use this podcast? Ep 42: What's your state?
Planning my mom's 70th birthday party last Friday with my brother and mom's boyfriend made division of labor prettymanageable and enjoyable.  But I'd be lying if I didn't say there was still quite a bit of stress getting things going! It was a great opportunity to watch myself experience stress, feel where it lands in my body, and see how it operates on my mind and behavior.  There were some tense moments, but deep breathing and keeping perspective helped keep me in the flow and maintain harmony.   In this podcast episode, I ask, "What state are you in?"  Do you know you're agitated WHILE you're agitated?  The  breathing tools I offer are wonderful for keeping you from living in a state of reaction, and living more often in a state of awareness and harmony.   Educating people on how to watch one's response to stress and maintain balance in the workplace is one of my favorite things to do.  I'm getting excited to present at Jacobs Engineering and Scott Douglass McConnico events next month! I have had the pleasure of presenting with some pretty savvy companies, such as NOVA Leadership, Renee Trudeau & Associates, and Conscious Capitalism, to name a few.  If you are interested in having me at your company's health and wellness event, please check out my Events page and let's see what will best fit your needs!

Ep 40: Abhinivesah--Attachment to life
This last klesha, or veil,  is difficult, even for the wise sages!  The fear of dying is the seed of all fear and anxiety, and its inborn characteristic indicates that perhaps we have known death before.  Yet here we are, alive and breathing.  Why fear what is to come?   I read from BKS Iyengar's Light on the Yoga Sutras.

Ep 39: Dvesha — the veil of aversion
Our unreasonable dislikes can cause our own suffering. The way we THINK about a thing might actually be worse than the thing itself. 🤯
10:52
April 2, 2019
Ep 38: Raga
Raga is the klesha, or veil, of attachment. Sometimes we become attached to an idea, status, or a way of doing things. These attachments take us out of the present moment and into a longing, which causes suffering. Remember, happiness lies within.
10:27
March 26, 2019
Ep 37: Asmita
In this klesha, or obstacle, we run into egoism, or misidentification. When you begin to confuse who you are with what you do or what you have, there will likely be suffering.
11:10
March 19, 2019
Ep 36: Avidya
As we embark on this journey to clear our minds of kleshas, or veils that obscure true perception, we can practice the art of remembering. AVIDYA, the first Kesha listed in the yoga sutras of Patanjali, is our ignorance, or innocence, of our divine nature. It is like a translucent curtain that obscures the light of the divine within us. It is this ignorance that makes way for the other four obstacles, so this is a big one! When you were a newborn baby, you were so close to this light within—it was not yet obscured by life in the material world. This connection was there in the beginning, it is still there! Remember this innocence as a practice this week. Notice it in the eyes of any baby you meet 💗
