Today I have Esther Loopstra joining me.  Esther Loopstra is a professional artist, educator and intuition coach whose work is an extension of her perpetual curiosity. Her art has been shown in galleries, used for print ads, editorials, books, stationery products, textiles and more. She also has a degree in Psychology and obsessively studies neuroscience, the creative process, intuition, mindfulness, and the psychology of FLOW.


So many of us have experienced a state of FLOW. Time can fly by in these moment. You might have even described this as being in "the zone". Can you relate? Most of us have also felt our intuition at some point or another. You may have had a "gut feeling" something was off or something was right. 


Many of us though have disconnect with our intuition and experience less and less states of flow. 

In this episode of Detox for Vibrant Health, Esther shares her top tips for reconnecting with our intuition and getting back into a state of flow.


1. Meditation to train the brain to be in the present moment

2. Recognizing what your intuition feels like in your body.

3. Validating it and asking it what your body or life is wanting

4. Actively asking your intuition what's next

Today's episode is with Nicola Lucie, a Shamanic Shadow Work Practitioner, the creator of the 1:1 Shadow Walking Process, and the Founder of the Feminine Principle. Coined a Soul Doula, Nicola supports women to redefine the relationship they have with themselves, others and Mother Earth so they can live empowered and embodied lives full of purpose, possibility and wonder.

This episode is all about detoxing emotional blockages and learning what these blockages have to teach us about unresolved wounding, trauma and conditioning we have been exposed to. We also explore the ways that the body communicates to us through illness and how we can start having a conversation with the body by reconnecting to it. 

This was such a fun and powerful conversation. Nicola has an amazing journey to share and she's taken, what can seem like a complex topic, and made it easy to understand. 

Here are some episode highlights.

- Emotional triggers come to us to show us what's suppressed in the body. By simply recognizing the trigger, and asking what it is, allows us to begin to reveal stories (that are often false) we tell ourselves. 

- Listen to your body, when it feels sick ask "why do I feel this?" Gently building a relationship with your body allows you to better understand how to heal.

- Unresolved trauma doesn't have to be significant, it can be small things that we hold onto that cause illness in our body.

- We are conditioned from a young age to look to outside help, whenever we get sick, giving our power away. But we are the only ones that know our body better than anyone. Looking for a health practitioner(s) who can be a part of our team to explore solutions is essential for optimum health.

Some of the most common conditions I see in my clients is fatigue, brain fog and gut health issues.  Did you know that these can be the result of heavy metal overload? Our body can deal with some volume of toxins and still function but when we overload it, things can start to break down.

Here’s how heavy metals overload can result in autoimmune conditions.

Heavy metals can keep our body from having a fully functioning immune system. We are exposed to viruses every day, or have reactivated viruses and simply not be aware.  They can be Epstein Barr Virus (Mono), Rocky Mountain Fever or retroviruses. When our body is bogged down with heavy metals, these viruses that would normally lay dormant, get reactivated. This is important as more and more researchers and doctors are recognizing reactivated viruses and retroviruses as a root cause of autoimmune diseases.

In fact, as I was finishing up some research on this I had a terrible realization that I’ve let plastics into my home in such small pieces that I hadn’t realized the amount I’ve been accumulating. Some of these things were gifts, some of these my husband bought and I admit, I buy shampoo and eco friendly cleaners in plastic containers.  I’m a little embarrassed honestly but I’m so happy to be giving myself this kick in the butt to get back on track.

Episode 006 - Detox for Autoimmunity - Herbicides

I originally was planning on covering one toxic component of herbicides – glyphosate – which is a key ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides commonly used in agriculture and gardening. But as I was doing my research it became apparent that the contaminants in the herbicides may be even more problematic. That is the formulation of the herbicide matters just as much as whether or not it has glyphosate.

In this episode, I’m covering some of the different components of herbicide and then I’ll show you how easy it is to avoid this at the grocery store and in your garden.

How to reduce exposure

  1. Buy organic. Look for in-season foods and keep an eye out for sales! You can also look for lower cost animal proteins (like ground meat) and do a meatless monday to save a bit extra. If you tolerate beans, buying in bulk is a great option! Just be sure to soak overnight and rinse before cooking. Try to keep away from super processed foods like pre-made meals even if they’re organic as they can be a higher cost than cooking from scratch and can still have additives and preservatives that aren’t conducive to your optimum health.
  2. Instead of using herbicides in the garden, consider spraying weeds with a vinegar and water mixture. You can pour boiling water on weeds growing in cracks in your walkways to kill those as well. Of course, always consider pulling. If you feel overwhelmed, hiring some some help for the weekend to pull weeds so you can get caught up is always nice. Note that bees will thank you for not using chemicals.  I also love an article by Ecowatch that has 12 ways to get rid of weeds without using roundup.

Finally, how do you help your body detox from Glyphosate?

  • Humic and fulvic acids – These are minerals found in soil that can help improve detoxification and restore nutrient deficiencies in the body through improving digestion.
  • Zeobind  – This is a natural zeolite. This works much like charcoal through binding to toxins and removing accumulation.
  • Probiotics that are capable a fully metabolizing glyphosate – Primarily acetobacter, which is found in apple cider vinegar and sauerkraut.
  • Spore probioticsMegaspore specifically supplies bacteria beneficial to glyphosate detoxification.
  • RestoreRestore is a supplement that uses carbon-based redox molecules from soil to help restore communication between mitochondria, cells, and bacteria. This is specifically used for glyphosate detoxification

Episode 005 Detox for Autoimmunity- Electrosmog

Many research institutions such as Cleveland Clinic, Harvard and Yale have recognized EMFs as a serious threat to human health. In this episode, I’ll tell you what Electrosmog is, how to reduce your exposure and how to detox from them.

Here are some simple steps you can take to reduce your exposure

  1. Turn off your WiFi at night and turn off all your devices WiFi before bed.
  2. Turn your cell phone to airplane mode if you use it for an alarm clock on your bedside table.  If you need your cell phone on, keep it at least 8 feet from you.
  3. Turn your cell phone to airplane mode when you wear it on you (ie. in your pocket or in your purse). You can use a shielding device if you need to have it turned on such as Defender Shield.
  4. Keep devices one foot from your body when you’re using them and use a wired headset for conversations.
  5. If you’re using a baby monitor, keep this device at least 5 feet away from the baby (where they sleep, play or get a diaper change)
  6. Limit the amount of metal you wear on your body including metal jewelry and underwire bras. These act like an antenna for EMFs.
  7. If you sleep on a bed that has metal coils and/or you have a metal bed frame. Consider replacing these with a metal free bed and wooden bed frame when you’re ready to replace them.

You probably don’t often think of air quality until something big happens like a wildfire or bad air day warnings. For myself, air quality was a big topic when we were stuck indoors for days due to forest fires. The air quality was so bad we could barely see the park trail up the hill from us. If you live in the Pacific Northwest or California, you probably also remember this.

What does air quality have to do with autoimmunity and detoxing? Well, since we breathe about 3,000 gallons of air each day, it seems like a likely contributor to our toxic load don’t you think?  As I’ve mentioned here toxins absolutely contribute to the development of autoimmune disease. Particularly when our toxic load becomes too much for our body to effectively detox it.

Happily, since the creation of the Clean Air Act, air pollution has slowly been improving.  But has it improved enough?
