If there is ever one fashion designer who knows how weddings have been interrupted and impacted  by covid 19 is Shaazia Adams. She is the talented, fashion designer based in Mozambique. Shaazia, specializes in designing wedding gowns but has since launched a sustainable brand called Mina.

Jessica met Shaazia at South African Fashion week a couple of years ago. She has styled, using her own pieces, for some of the fashion magazine covers while Jessica was was still working for publications back then. She can attest to the talent at hand and craftsmanship. Today, we are looking forward to hearing all about Mina, the sister brand she has created. Jessica started the interview by asking Shaazia how does she stays organised.

Nomaza was born in Ngqeleni, a village within the Eastern Cape, of South Africa - the third child in a family of five. After studying Biomodical Technology in the Free State at the Central University of Technology, she worked in private laboratories like Pathcare and Ampath between 2003 – 2007, and later became a Medical Representative for Novonordisk, before moving to France in 2009, where she is resident and married.Nomaza was born in Ngqeleni, a village within the Eastern Cape, of South Africa - the third child in a family of five. After studying Biomodical Technology in the Free State at the Central University of Technology, she worked in private laboratories like Pathcare and Ampath between 2003 – 2007, and later became a Medical Representative for Novonordisk, before moving to France in 2009, where she is resident and married.In 2017, Nomaza was appointed by French President Emmanuel Macron to serve on the Conseil Presidential pour Afrique (CPA). A group made up of 11 Africans to advise President Macron on contemporary Africa in so doing helping him make better policies for Africa. However, her pride is the Art residency she launched in 2019. The 1st. art residency by a South African woman on the French Riviera and 100% funded by Undiscovered Canvas. The residency program inspires young African artists through learning about French culture and living in France, and to enable productive collaborations between French artists and young African artists.

On this episode Jessica is chatting to Lara Klawikowski 

She is a South African fashion designer and illustrator of Polish and Russian heritage, based in Cape Town. She launched her eponymous label in 2010 with a focus on avant-garde design, after graduating from CTCFD and winning the SACTWU Condom Dress Design Award.

During her studies, she won the prestigious Durban July Young Designer Award, was a top 5 graduate at the CTFC Graduate Shows, runner-up in the FAD Awards, and completed an introductory course in shoe making and shoe design. She showcased her first ready-to-wear collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Cape Town in 2013 and was also a semi-finalist in the SAFW Renault New Talent competition.

Lara Klawikowski designs wearable art - bespoke womenswear handcrafted at her studio. Her designs are intriguingly tactile and artisanal, with a distinctive artistry, femininity, edge, and other-worldly beauty. She employs unpredictable pattern-cutting and garment construction, organic draping and proportions. Her love for unusual detail, texture and innovative use of fabric has led to constant experimentation with recycled, upcycled and re-fabricated materials.

Lara Klawikowski won the Innovative Design and Materials Award, as well as the coveted Changemaker Award at the TWYG x Country Road Sustainable Fashion Awards 2020.
