058 - Identity Crisis: Dreamer & Savior
We turn back the dial about 4,000 years to ancient Canaan and Egypt. We find a man whose father was a deceiver, and his mother was favored. This man, at a young age, was given a garment that was adorned with many colors. It identified him as favored, special, and an heir to the promises of his father. Yet, his older brothers became angry. They knew that their younger brother jumped to the front of the line, and their younger brother had the audacity to dream of greatness. So, they took his garment from him and covered it in blood. They wanted him dead, but this young man ended up a slave, a prisoner, and eventually governor of Egypt. Though his tzitzit was stripped from him, it never stopped identifying him. The dreamer and the savior of God's chosen people, Joseph, stands as a type and shadow for our Savior.

057 - Identity Crisis: Prophets, Warriors, Kings
Up next in our latest series, we get into the identity crisis Saul had. From the very beginning we see warning signs of Saul's character when they can't find him at the assembly. But, Saul's major issue is not just an inability to take responsibility. It's that his repentance and worship were shallow. His heart could only be changed for a short time before he was doing evil again. Though he prophesied and was anointed, Saul lost his position because he became wrapped up in his position rather than being obedient and submitting to God. After that, God sought out David - a man after God's own heart. David would reach out against Saul, and it would show Saul that his kingdom was at an end. However, David understood his place and God's place. He knew God would exalt him at the appointed time - not in his time.

056 - The Church Identity Crisis
What could an ancient piece of garment unlock about Jesus, the Holy Ghost, the Church, and several major figures in faith? In the Ancient Near East (not just Jewish cultures) there is a tradition of tassels that provide an identity to those who wear it. The elaborate tassel was an extension of the hem and could be used as an identification or as a signature of documents. It often was used as a form of ID for nobility and those who had money/status. The tassel is known in Judaism as the tzitzit. The tassel that God commanded Moses to have made that would remind the Hebrews of who they were and who God is, but it is also a foreshadowing of one of the most important New Testament doctrines.

Identity Crisis Trailer
Joseph, Samuel, Saul, Jesus, and Paul all have something unique in common. A specific article of clothing is mentioned in the Bible for good and bad reasons. This article of clothing? The tzitzit. It carried so much weight and intricacy in ancient times that it could be used as a signature, but it's also tied to identity - as a Jew and as a person. The tzitzit are used to remind Jews who they are and who God is. In this latest series, we're going to dig into Joseph's colorful coat, Samuel's torn cloak, Saul's cut tzitzit, Jesus' tzitzit, and Paul's writings about women's hair. It is ALL connected!

055 - Church of Half-Truth: Armor of God
Our last episode in this series takes us to the armor of God. Sadly, this subject has been reduced to an occasional Sunday School lesson. However, this subject is far deeper than anyone could every imagine. The armor finds its roots in an Old Testament passage written by an ancient prophet. Each piece is intentionally selected by Paul to not only convey meaning, but to signify the spiritual power of Christians. But, How do we put on the armor of God? We'll talk about that!

054 - Church of Half-Truth: Marriage & Submission
Our next installment of our series on Ephesians carries us to the extremely sensitive and important topic of marriage. This week, though, we didn't just want to lean on our knowledge. So, we invited two special guests - our wives. We wanted to deliver something that could help everyone! We will look at what submission in marriage means from a woman's perspective, and we will get into our personal lives. You'll also get a sneak at us, as husbands getting fussed at (a little - it's all in good fun)!

053 - Church of Half-Truth: Equip. Unite. Mature.
Up next in the "Church of Half-Truth" series, Larry and Derek explore why we get the fivefold ministry WRONG. Each ministry is much more than just offices or titles. It's a calling, an action, and a lifestyle. However, there are some that say prophets and apostles no longer exist, but there are flaws and misrepresentation of scripture that lead to that thinking. What are those flaws and misrepresentations? Scriptures are taken out of context and skewed to fit the idea that prophets and apostles have ceased. Further, if we are Spirit-filled believers, each of these offices should be alive inside of our own lives!

052 - Church of Half-Truth: Oneness & Trinity
Continuing our discussion of Ephesians, we turn our attention to Godhead. There's some debate around this topic. There are two predominant lines of thought: oneness & trinity. We look at "one Lord, one faith, one baptism" through the eyes of Oneness Pentecostalism & trinitarianism. We'll also talk briefly about Jesus Name baptism, which is really at the core of the Godhead debate. Oneness Pentecostals baptize in the name of Jesus, but what is the biblical formula? What does it really mean to be baptized "in the name of Jesus"?

051 - Church of Half-Truth: Grace Through Faith
Continuing our discussion about Ephesians, we encounter words from Paul that have stirred much debate in Christianity throughout centuries. Those words? "By grace you have been saved, through faith." Martin Luther had an interesting and thought provoking take on this passage that describes grace as the nature of God and faith is believing He is and has paid the price. This episode is filled with theological insight and deep thought into the Word!

050 - Church of Half-Truth
Our 50th episode! We kick off our newest series "Church of the Half-Truth" with a discussion of the culture and history of Ephesus according the secular and biblical sources. Pre-Christian Ephesus was the center of worship for the goddess Artemis. The worship of Artemis was heavily women led - mostly for all the wrong reasons. The cult of Artemis created false empowerment for women. However, in many ways, these "half-truths" are still prevalent in our secular and church culture today - making us a modern reflection of those ancient half-truths.

049 - Risen: He Is Risen!
Closing out our "Risen" series, Derek and Larry get into the historicity of the resurrection. Why should the resurrection be a historical FACT? As Christians, we boldly declare the resurrection, but one key piece of evidence of detractors of Jesus' resurrection is missing - the body of Jesus. The tomb was empty. That's what we know based on every account. He is risen!

048 - Risen: Three Dark Days
This week, we explore secret disciples and the three darkest days known to humanity. What is the significance behind Nicodemus and Joseph of Arimathea's presence at the entombment of Christ? Was it three entire days in the grave, or was it Friday to Sunday? We'll also explore why the facts and details of the burial matter to many people!

047 - Risen: Brutality of the Cross
On this week's episode, we leave the lighter subjects of last week and discuss one of the most brutal things that a human could ever go through - crucifixion. Jesus' beating and crucifixion was as intense as it comes. Beaten & bloodied to the point of being unrecognizable, Jesus boldly stood before Herod and Pilate. He even had a conversation with Pilate in the final moments of his life that would make many of look foolish. We'll discuss what crucifixion looks like and just how excruciating it was for Jesus to die on a cross.

046 - Risen: Peter VS Judas
This week, we pit two disciples against one another. Judas is portrayed as a greedy man, and the most infamous traitor in all of history. He was a nobleman, and Jesus trusted him with the money bag. Yet, it seems that everyone knew Judas was shifty. That same shiftiness would ultimately result in his own demise. However, we often give Peter a pass. He denied Jesus as Jesus was led from trial to trial. It's even said that they met eyes when Peter denied him the third time. Peter seemed to have an unpredictable streak. He cut off the ear of a temple guard trying to defend Jesus, and he consistently showed his temper throughout the Gospels and Acts. We'll take a close look at each of these men's betrayals, and end at what we can learn from Judas' betrayal and death.

045 - Risen: The Easter Controversy
Kicking off our new series, "Risen", we look at the history of Easter. Where did it start? Why did it start? Is Easter really pagan, and are our traditions really pagan? We'll also talk about how the date of Easter created one of the first real church controversies and almost caused an entire sect of Christians to be excommunicated by the Catholic Church! All this and more on this episode of the JNN Podcast!

044 - In the Beginning: Salvation in Genesis
On this week's episode, Larry and Derek tie up the "In the Beginning" series. We'll recap and demonstrate the different aspects of salvation evident in Genesis. It is so boldly evident that God had a divine order in place to reconcile His prized creation. The grace and truth spoken of by John is woven into the very fabric of the creation narrative.

043 - In the Beginning: Babel to Pentecost
On this week's episode, we go from Babel to Pentecost. We want to connect the dots of the tower of Babel. Why did God view this as a sign of man's ability? Why did God seem worried about it at all? Is it because a tower really was trying to get to Heaven? No, there are cultural and theological points that we must take into account when we read about this account. God disinherited the people of the Earth and found a man named Abram, and its through Abram we see salvation come back to all mankind.

042 - In The Beginning: Days of Noah
After God looked on the nephilim and the wickedness of mankind, God decided to wipe it out - all of it. Except, one man and seven of his family members. That man was Noah. Why was Noah found righteous? Did the flood cover the entirety of the Earth, or was it just a local event? What did Jesus mean by "as it was in the days of Noah"? We'll answer all these questions in this week's episode of the JNN Podcast!

BONUS: Invasion of Ukraine
Late last Wednesday night, America received word that Russia began its invasion of Ukraine. Since then, the world has been encapsulated in this ongoing conflict. Nations have struggled to decide what they should do. We've seen billions of dollars worth of military aid go to Ukraine while Russia bombards the cities of Kyiv, Kharkiv, and others. Furthermore, Russia has hit civilian buildings, schools, and hospitals (and been unapologetic). On this bonus episode, we look at this from a Christian perspective. We are greatly concerned about the situation in Ukraine and fully support the Ukrainians in the defense of their country. We pray that good would prevail and ultimately God would have His ultimate will be done.

041 - In the Beginning: Sons of Angels
This week we look at the mysterious race of people known as "nephilim." What were they? WHO were they? Where did they come from? Why was God so frustrated with mankind and the nephilim that He chose to wipe it all out - saving only Noah? What's interesting is this doesn't just end with ancient Hebrew theology. This goes all the way into the New Testament & the apostles!

We continue our discussion about mankind this week with the fall. We ask some critical questions about the tree of knowledge of good and evil. We look at why Eve was comfortable talking to a snake. This week we continue our dive into creation with an 'ages-old' question; How old is the earth? Some say 6,000 years old. Others say at least 12,000 years old. Many say 4.543 BILLION years old. Which is correct, and why are people walking away from the faith over the question of Earth's age?

037 - In the Beginning: Creation & Leviathan
Starting off season 2, Larry & Derek talk about creation & the mysterious creature, leviathan. Many know about the leviathan, but they never consider that it has a connection to creation. Leviathan is often what we'd consider to be a sea monster, but God spake of leviathan's presence around creation. What's up with that? We'll also look at the structure of the creation narrative, and discuss why there is more than one creation narrative in the Bible.

031.2 - Purgatory, Part 2
On this special episode of the Jesus Name News Podcast, we continue to grapple with the concept of purgatory. Is it as final as we think, and does it actually have a purpose besides sending the dead there to figure out where they want to spend eternity? We know the common ideas of what purgatory is and is not, but how close is it to Abraham's Bosom? Why does Jesus refer to Abraham's Bosom, and where does that terminology come from?

There is such a thing as being right, but having the wrong spirit. Therefore, we do more harm and wrong than any good. How do we navigate these social issues as Christians? 011 - Prophecy in the Name of God
On this week's episode, Larry and Derek look at the wave of the "prophetic" that is on the rise. In 2020, many "prophets" declared that former President Trump would win a second term. Very few of those have repented of that "prophecy." Those that have repented have faced backlash. But, this goes deeper than the most recent presidential election. There are many who have prophesied in the name of God about plenty of other issues. Have we entered an era akin to Jeremiah and Ezekiel's day where there are many prophets, but less than a handful of true prophets? What about that "lying spirit" God put in the mouth of the prophets because the people refused to listen? Where is the accountability? We take a look at this and MUCH more!
