Bold Predictions for 2020

The presents have been opened, the turkey has been eaten, the new year celebrated and now it's time to focus on hockey. The Jets Nation Podcast is happy to be back after an extended Christmas break! The Jets are still in a playoff spot and two of their players have been invited to the All-Star game. Winnipeg also has two players at the World Juniors, but unfortunately neither of them are on team Canada. The guys also make some bold predictions heading into 2020. The first episode of the new year is one you don't want to miss.

Do "Sellouts" Matter?

Do "Sellouts" Matter?

It's been an up and down stretch for the Winnipeg Jets. They won three straight before dropping the last two. Tuesday's game against Arizona was the first that wasn't a "sellout" since their return to Winnipeg in 2011. Should fans be worried? There have been some rumours about a return to the lineup for Dustin Byfuglien and Bryan Little. What kind of impact can they have on the lineup? You can find all of that and more on this week's episode.

Roster Reduction

The NHL preseason has been moving right along and we are finally getting closer to meaningful games. Not a lot of progress has been made (from our perspective) when it comes to Kyle Connor, Patrik Laine and Dustin Byfuglien, so we will speculate on potential trade options. We will also break down the last few games and look at the players who've been cut.

Free Agent Frenzy

The opening of NHL free agency is in the rear view mirror but the Winnipeg Jets still have four key restricted free agents to sign (Patrik Laine, Kyle Connor, Andrew Copp, Neal Pionk). On this week's episode the guys break down the frenzy that was July 1st, react to the Jets' signings, and look at trade potential moving forward.

Offseason Overview

After a brief playoff podcast break, the boys are back! The Stanley Cup has been handed out (Congratulations St. Louis) and now the NHL off season begins! The Winnipeg Jets are heading into what could arguably be their most difficult and influential offseason since arriving in Winnipeg. The Jets have key players needing contracts (Jacob Trouba, Patrick Laine, Kyle Connor, Andrew Copp...) and players with contracts that could be bought out (Dimitri Kulikov). The entry draft is coming up next week and free agency will open up on July 1st. What problem should the Jets tackle first? What should they do with Jacob Trouba? Find out on this week's episode.

Everything is right in "Jetsland". Or at least that's the way it might look on the surface to a casual

fan. The Jets have won four in a row and are three points ahead of the Nashville Predators for first in

the Central division. Have the last four wins convinced the Jets Nation Podcast that things are headed in the right direction?

Matt Hendricks came into the lineup against Los Angeles and Roslovic was removed. What should the lines

be in the playoffs?

Good Team, Bad Coach?

Good Team, Bad Coach?

The Winnipeg Jets have won two games in a row and are tied for first in the Western Conference. Despite the success there are some concerns about the coaching of Paul Maurice. Is he making the right lineup decisions? Are the underlying metrics telling a terrifying tale? The guys look at whether Paul Maurice is a bad coach with good players or a good coach who is getting good production from his squad.

The trade deadline is looming and Winnipeg is on the hunt for a big piece heading into the playoffs. The Jets got a close look over the last few days at some players that are rumoured to be available: Mark Stone, Matt Duchene and Kevin Hayes. Would These players be a good fit? Would the price be too high?

Lack of Laine

Lack of Laine

The Winnipeg Jets have coming flying out of the NHL All Star break like a herd of turtles. The team struggled against the Flyers on Monday and then had issues against Boston but were able to pull out a victory. Patrick Laine is in a slump and his ice time has dropped. Are the Jets treating him fairly? What needs to be done? They guys also look at the highlights of the All Star weekend, the implications for the Jake Muzzin trade and the problems with Winnipeg's power play.

Goalie Controversy

At the halfway point of the NHL season the Winnipeg Jets are heating up. As a team they are right where many fans expected them to be. This has been a result of different parts of the lineup exceeding expectations. Laurent Brossoit has arguably been the biggest revelation, and many people have called for more ice time. Is there controversy in the crease? Should the starts get split equally? The guys look at some other overachievers and the acquisitions that could be made heading into the trade deadline.

Winning Hurts

Winning Hurts

Despite the injuries piling up the Winnipeg Jets are coming off a perfect 3-0 road trip and have won four straight. It's the longest winning streak of the season but some of the wins have come in less than convincing fashion. What has been their secret to success? Are younger players replacing the veterans? With the announcement of a 32nd NHL franchise being added in Seattle the guys take an early look at who to expose for the expansion draft.

Fire and Ice

The Winnipeg Jets have been hot and cold this season and it's often been said that they aren't playing to their full potential. Patrick Laine finally seems to have broken out of his early season slump but Connor Hellebuyck has regressed to more pedestrian numbers in net. Will this last for both of these players? Does the reassignment of Kristian Vesalainen hurt the team or his development? How does William Nylander's contract negotiation affect the Jets? The guys look at all of that and more on this week's episode.

"Finn"tastic

Changes have been made around the NHL and four coaches are now looking for work. The Winnipeg Jets seem to be in a solid place with their coach but there is always room for improvement. Could one of these available coaches help the team? It's been a unique situation with Kristian Vesalainen. He has been called up and then sent back down to the Moose for no obvious reason. With a lot of rumors flying the guys weigh in with their opinions. Also on today's show the guys talk about the regular strength scoring of Laine, they rank the Jets' forwards and look at the viability of a WHL team coming to the 'Peg.

I don't know what happened away from the rink in Finland, but whatever it was it seemed to help the Jets. Winnipeg is 3-0 since returning back home including some big performances from their top line of Mark Schiefele, Blake Wheeler, and Nikolaj Ehlers. Patrick Laine hasn't been scoring at even strength, but does it really matter if the team is winning and he is contributing on the power play? Josh Morrissey could be facing supplemental discipline and Myers should be facing discipline for some of his latest errors. The guys look at all of this and more on today's show.

Suspensions

Is the NHL season still going on? The Winnipeg Jets have had an extended break since coming back from Finland and the guys are getting antsy. Patrick Laine played great in his home country; will this type of play continue when he comes back to North America? The Jets also have the tough decision of what to do with Brendan Lemieux. His hit basically cost them the game against the Panthers, and now he is out for at least the next two games.

The Winnipeg Jets have had the hardest time this season finding a suitable line for their young Finnish sniper. Will the combination of Lowry and Tanev help Laine break out this season? Neither are elite playmakers, but they could potentially make up for Laine's lack of defense. Will the complete forward overhaul help the goal production? The guys also look at some curious roster decisions heading overseas (No Niku or Vesalainen), and delve into the defensive depth.

The Winnipeg Jets are 1-1-1 in their last three games and the offense hasn't been coming as easily as it has in the past. Do they need a change up front? Is a new player coming in on the fourth line really going to make a difference? The Jets now have one less player in the organization with the departure of Marko Dano for nothing. The biggest news in weeks came out Tuesday morning when the Winnipeg Jets announced that they had reached a new 5 year contract extension worth $41.25 million with their captain Blake Wheeler. The contract will make Wheeler the highest paid Jet, and will take him until he is 37. There is obviously some concern when paying a 37 year old player $8.25 million.
