When social media came into play, it gave that power back to people. Now, everyone has the opportunity to get messages in front of the right people. Life as a Social Entrepreneur. mindfulsocial with Lynn Abate-Johnson
I've always held the belief that who we work with and the causes we support should reflect our business values and goals. We make an effort to partner with social entrepreneurs who want to make a positive difference in the world, and businesses who have respect for their customers and employees. It's not always easy of course, and we can lose track of the goals when we find ourselves making decisions based on financial or ego considerations, just like anyone else! So, how do social entrepreneurs run their businesses? We talked about this with Adam Helweh on an earlier show about what a successful client relationship looks like and this week I'm talking with the remarkable Lynn Abate-Johnson, founder of People Forward where she generates business growth for her clients, through Customer-Centered, Holistic Business Systems that are tried and true. The Happy Healthy Nonprofit MindfulSocial With Beth Kanter and Aliza Sherman
Burnout is often held up as a badge of pride in for-profit and non-profit businesses alike. Authenticity at work, where's the line?
My guest this week, Maddie Grant, recently wrote a post on Linkedin titled "Why We've Got It Wrong About Bringing Our True Selves To Work" and it gave us food for thought. Even with our true, authentic selves we still need to take a mindful approach to when and how we share, and what level of our true self is appropriate to put out there. Learn more at:

The healing power of forgiveness #MindfulSocial with @TaraMuldoon
My guest on Mindful Social this week is Tara Muldoon. Tara is the founder of The F-You Project, a movement she started when she did not find justice in the justice system after being sexually assaulted. She saw an art show based on forgiveness from the UK and knew that forgiveness was the missing piece in her life. After realizing forgiveness would have to come from within, she created a platform for youth and young adults to speak openly about what it means to forgive. Learn more at:

Mindful PR the way it should be with @Shonali Shonali Burke
Before, there was traditional PR. Before and during the email era, media outreach was still mostly one-one-one. We focused on targeting the outlet, the reporter, and customized the pitch, being mindful of what would take and what would not. Now, social PR, just like traditional PR, is about building relationships. Where the relationship before was with the media, social allows us to broaden our scope. We’re not just building relationships with relevant media, but also with evangelizers. The way the online space has evolved is that now anyone can be an influencer, as long as the context is right. It’s about having a holistic conversation to build a community to tell your story for you. Watch more as Janet and Shonali explore #Mindful Social PR! Learn more on the blog:

The Good, the Bad, and the Fun of being a community manager with Megan Keane @penguinasana
Join as Megan Keane shares with us the good, the bad and the fun of being a community manager. When starting a new community or taking over an established community, one of the key things to think of is, “what is the purpose of the community?” You’re thinking of your motivations and, whether you’re a nonprofit or not, you’re going to have goals, but what’s going to motivate the community? What do you want the focus to be on? Keep in mind the community isn’t going to share your business goals. Plus, all communities should have guidelines, and it’s going to be different depending on who you’re talking to and what the focus is. Most of guidelines will have items such as, “be civil.” Also, keep in mind what’s going to create a safe space that is going to encourage members to share and be a part of the community? Watch the video on the blog to learn about the challenges taking over an established community, and more!

Mindful entrepreneurship, #MindfulSocial with @JohnHaydon
Mindful Entrepreneurship: Be mindful of your own fear and accepting the fact that you’re going to be freaked out. Take a breath and focus. It’s not necessarily an external situation that’s freaking you. It’s your reaction that’s freaking you out. In the beginning you question yourself. The mind monkeys jump on your back and say, “You’re a loser, it’s not going to work.” Mindfulness recognizes those monkeys. Don’t make time for the mind monkeys. Then take a look at reality – Is there growth over time and are things in the pipeline: Find the answer to “You’re a loser.” The answer is always from inside. Are you making more money or less money? Are you getting more customers? Getting more repeat customers? How we react is our problem. Learn more about Mindful Entrepreneurship:

The ABCs of Attention, Balance, and Compassion with @susankgreenland
On social media: All of us need to hone our message. What is we’re trying to say, who are we trying to reach, and why are we doing this in the first place. Then when we need to look at where is our attention: Are we distracted? What’s happening in our mind and body right now from an emotional place? Are we calm? Are we charged up? When we’re a little annoyed or charged up, it might be time to take a break before you hit “send.” We start “teaching” our children mindfulness early on. We’re learning that we can regulate ourselves and down-regulate ourselves. If we can stay in the moment and in a mindful relationship with our child, that is amazing and important modeling. It creates an in tuned relationship. When they’re older, it’s being in the moment with the child engaged in the activity and really being present. Enjoy the wonderful moment without a lot of analyzing. If they’re drawing, simply be there, instead of being on the iPhone, and let them draw without expectations. Successful Client Relationships: Quality over quantity with @secretsushi Adam Helweh
When a business owner starts out, it’s almost in a sales mode initially. You’re spending time outside the office and connecting with people, and there will come a time where there it’s a balancing act to balance selling your business to obtain new clients and completing the work you have, and this can be stressful. Remember, you’re in the business of making your clients happy. Also, it’s easier to keep the clients you have, and get more work or referrals than it is to find new work. You’re not in business to collect clients like Pokémon. Being mindful is knowing there comes a time when we have to pause and say, “This is what I need to focus on.” Pay more attention to the creative ways to get your clients what they need. Make sure that part of your time is spent not to not just address the work the clients need, but also how can you improve the relationship. Listen for more mindful tips from Janet Secret Sushi! Mindful Business Communication with Jessica Smith
How can we apply mindfulness in communicating and receiving business messaging? One of the things that is missing in business is mindful listening. We claim that we’re listening, but we’re not actually listening. We have so many distractions in our environments, and what we think is listening is really hearing. We hear somebody talk and we pick up some of the words, but we’re not really focused on that person. That’s where mindfulness listening comes in. It’s being in tuned to the other person and listening to what they have to say, being curious about their perspectives, opinions and genuinely listening! Also, how do we as communicators talk about our brand and keep the brand identity and messaging in mind while being mindful of our audience, who doesn’t care about our messaging? Listen to Janet and Jessica to find out! Learn more at

Marketing your Business? Start with the story #MindfulSocial with @KylieSlavik
For hundreds of years, people shared ideas, values, and teachings through storytelling. Advertising interrupted our entire way of communicating. For many years, we’ve been told what to think by media, television, and advertisers, and it’s disrupted our ability to create culture and contribute to culture like we used to. When social media came into play, it gave that power back to people. Now, everyone has the opportunity to get messages in front of the right people. Listen to learn more about how story-telling can enhance your current marketing program!

What does mindful social leadership look like? Janet Fouts with Mark Babbitt
What does mindful leadership look like? We know it’s a completely different animal than when many of us were young. Things looked fine when we were in a manufacturing environment, and now all of us are working in idea factories. Now everything is knowledge based, being thoughtful, mindful, and creative. Mindful social leadership is so much more than social media. It’s about active listening and being self aware at this moment. It’s about putting the device down and having a conversation.
