Before, there was traditional PR. Before and during the email era, media outreach was still mostly one-one-one. We focused on targeting the outlet, the reporter, and customized the pitch, being mindful of what would take and what would not. Now, social PR, just like traditional PR, is about building relationships. Where the relationship before was with the media, social allows us to broaden our scope. We’re not just building relationships with relevant media, but also with evangelizers. The way the online space has evolved is that now anyone can be an influencer, as long as the context is right. When starting a new community or taking over an established community, one of the key things to think of is, “what is the purpose of the community?” You’re thinking of your motivations and, whether you’re a nonprofit or not, you’re going to have goals, but what’s going to motivate the community? What do you want the focus to be on? Keep in mind the community isn’t going to share your business goals. Plus, all communities should have guidelines, and it’s going to be different depending on who you’re talking to and what the focus is. Mindful Entrepreneurship: Be mindful of your own fear and accepting the fact that you’re going to be freaked out. Take a breath and focus. It’s not necessarily an external situation that’s freaking you. It’s your reaction that’s freaking you out. In the beginning you question yourself. The mind monkeys jump on your back and say, “You’re a loser, it’s not going to work.” Mindfulness recognizes those monkeys. Don’t make time for the mind monkeys. Then take a look at reality – Is there growth over time and are things in the pipeline: Find the answer to “You’re a loser.” The answer is always from inside. Are you making more money or less money? On social media: All of us need to hone our message. What is we’re trying to say, who are we trying to reach, and why are we doing this in the first place. Then when we need to look at where is our attention: Are we distracted? What’s happening in our mind and body right now from an emotional place? Are we calm? Are we charged up? When we’re a little annoyed or charged up, it might be time to take a break before you hit “send.”
We start “teaching” our children mindfulness early on. We’re learning that we can regulate ourselves and down-regulate ourselves. If we can stay in the moment and in a mindful relationship with our child, that is amazing and important modeling. It creates an in tuned relationship. When they’re older, it’s being in the moment with the child engaged in the activity and really being present. Enjoy the wonderful moment without a lot of analyzing. When a business owner starts out, it’s almost in a sales mode initially. You’re spending time outside the office and connecting with people, and there will come a time where there it’s a balancing act to balance selling your business to obtain new clients and completing the work you have, and this can be stressful. Remember, you’re in the business of making your clients happy. Also, it’s easier to keep the clients you have, and get more work or referrals than it is to find new work. You’re not in business to collect clients like Pokémon.
Being mindful is knowing there comes a time when we have to pause and say, “This is what I need to focus on.” Pay more attention to the creative ways to get your clients what they need. How can we apply mindfulness in communicating and receiving business messaging? One of the things that is missing in business is mindful listening. We claim that we’re listening, but we’re not actually listening.
We have so many distractions in our environments, and what we think is listening is really hearing. We hear somebody talk and we pick up some of the words, but we’re not really focused on that person. That’s where mindfulness listening comes in. It’s being in tuned to the other person and listening to what they have to say, being curious about their perspectives, opinions and genuinely listening!

What does mindful leadership look like? We know it’s a completely different animal than when many of us were young.
