Exploring The Myths Behind The Legends

We have reached what appears to be the end of the road here at EMBL Podcast. While we are sad because it's unlikely that we will be able to continue producing content, we are going out on a positive note by publishing our final (?) episode on Halloween!

For the first part of the episode, Mariah shares a couple of scary experiences from her past. They will chill you to the bone! After that, Chuy talks about some movies that would have made it as the main topics for possible future episodes. At the conclusion, we reminisce about past episodes, especially Mariah's guest spots.

There are too many people to thank for helping us out throughout the years. We want to take the opportunity to thank Monica and Bel, our past cohosts, as well as everyone who agreed to appear as a guest, and everyone who sent positive feedback and advice. Between her new role as a guardian, the deadlines at work, her nosy neighbor with a hellhound for a pet, and the judgmental social worker assigned to oversee her interactions with Cady, things get unusually complicated for her. Gemma decides to complete the prototype of a new toy/robot so that Cady can have someone to play with, learn from, and to take care of her while she works. However, the situation takes a dark turn when M3GAN, the robot companion, starts to learn at an accelerated rate, and pretty soon, she starts to make her own decisions ...

Mo allies himself with a motley crue of quirky characters, including a disgraced cookie tycoon, the woman in charge of the advertising campaign for The Stuff, a runaway child, and even a fringe military group, to stop The Stuff from spreading further. Will their efforts be enough, or will everyone become a slave of The Stuff?

Ginger and Brigitte Fitzgerald are two teenage sisters growing up in the suburbs. They are disenchanted with life and seem to have a rather morbid fixation on death. Everything in their lives starts to change after Ginger is attacked by an unknown creature one night. After the attack, Brigitte notices how her sister starts to act very differently, and her physical appearance is also not the same anymore. She enlists the help of Sam, a local botanist dude, to see if they can figure out a way to help Ginger before it's too late for her ...

And we're back! We've been away for several weeks, but we're ready to jump right into things! We talked about how scenes from the movie remind us of things that we all went through at some point or another in our lives. Puberty, a sense of not belonging, what it's like to lose a loved one, and society in the years before 2001 were among the topics we covered.

We did experience some technical difficulties making this episode, so we'd like to apologize for that.

Christine was inadvertently chosen by The Devil as the woman with whom he shall create his unholy spawn, The Antichrist. The catch is, The Devil has to find her before the millennium ends, otherwise, his plan will be foiled. Enter Jericho Cane, a disgraced police officer who lost his wife and daughter some time ago. Arming himself with an arsenal bigger than that of most small countries, he decides to protect Christine from the destiny that was thrust upon her. Will he be able to stop the Devil with the power of love/machine guns/grenade launchers, or will Satan get his way?

In the first segment, Chuy briefly goes over the technical/behind the scenes stuff of the movie, such as its budget and cast. For the second part of the episode, Mariah jumps in, and the topics we covered include life in the time of the end of the world/millennium, how crappy this movie is, existential diatribes, etc. :)

After receiving the gift, Frankie starts to act strangely and to experience bizarre phenomena. The most striking is the presence of the stigmata, which are, according to the Catholic teachings, the wounds that Jesus Christ received at the time of his crucifixion.  A priest named Andrew Kiernan becomes involved when he is sent to investigate her case by his superiors in the Vatican. Will they be able to figure out why Frankie, a self confessed atheist, is receiving the wounds that are only given to the most devout believers?

Price agrees to rent the house for her birthday celebration, but he's planning something wicked for her. Once they get to the house, they find out that the invitations were sent to complete strangers. Price offers one million dollars to each guest that stays in the house the whole night, but after they are mysteriously locked in, they will all find that they are in for way more than they had bargained for ...

Lexi shares information with us about the Legend Of The Black Dog, which appears to truck drivers who over exert themselves on the road. Kayla talks to us about the mystery of the Isdal Woman, which is about the mysterious way that a very eccentric woman was found dead in Norway several years ago.

Chuy then talks about the history of the mummy museum in Guanajuato, Mexico, where there are over 100 preserved bodies for people to visit. Finally, Mariah shares some information about how the movie the Ring could be connected to both a Japanese folk legend from the 1300s and to the strange case of a Japanese doll which has hair that grows and teeth.

Boone has been dreaming of visiting a mystical place called Midian, where he meets a diverse group of creatures. His psychiatrist, Dr. Decker, appears to be helpful, but he is secretly a serial killer that is trying to frame Boone for his crimes. After meeting a mysterious man in a hospital, Boone finally begins his quest to reach Midian. Once he gets there, he gets involved in the stuggle for survival of its inhabitants. Will Boone succeed in helping the Nightbreed, or will Decker get away with his scheme?

For the second part of the episode, Mariah joins in and gives her own impressions, and she explains why she was reminded of Mexican telenovelas while watching the movie :P

In our new format, Chuy briefly goes over the plot of the movie and give his impressions on it. So, we thought we'd talk about how there is a literal island in Mexico where there are over 2000 of them hanging from the trees and vegetation, just waiting for you to become their new friend :)

After discussing that creepy place, we share some stories about our personal experiences with dolls. From hearing them walking down the hall at 3 am to hearing them whispering in the middle of the night, we got some chilling stuff for you to dive into!

In 1947, an incident in Roswell, New Mexico, made people believe that Earth was being visited by aliens. Local townspeople found the remains of an unidentified aircraft. Once the government got involved in the recovery process, they provided some explanations as to the origins of the aircraft, but some people weren't entirely satisfied.

We took it upon ourselves to talk about this subject, and we discuss everything from online technology, atomic weapons, and psychology in the context of the possibility of alien encounters. Oh, and also, dummies falling from the sky :P In addition to all that, Mariah shares some interesting personal and family stories about what could be possible alien encounters and sightings ...

A group of "teenagers" decide to stay at the local mall overnight to party and do all the kinds of things that "teens" do. What they didn't count on though, was the fact that a freak lightning bolt would corrupt the newly installed security computer, along with its three Protector robots. Will they be able to fight them off until they can escape in the morning? Or will they succumb to the killbots?

Frank and Freddy work in a creepy warehouse in which all kinds of cadavers are stored. Frank shows Freddy around, and they eventually get to the basement, where something not like anything else in the warehouse has been stored for several years. After a mysterious gas leaks due to their incompetence, the unthinkable starts to happen. Dead bodies of all kinds start to come back to life, and they only have one thing on their mind ... Getting more and more brains.

Due to health reasons, Mariah was unable to participate in the discussion, but luckily, Robbie Sherman was able to step in and help with the conversation about the scenes that stood out the most from this 80s cult classic. We also talked about the social commentary and message behind some of the events in the movie, some behind the scenes stuff, and much more.

The suburbs seem like a very tranquil and idyllic place to live, but, as Davey and his group of friends will soon find out, that is where the craziest things seem to happen. After becoming convinced that Mr. Mackey, his neighbor and a local police officer, is a serial killer, Davey convinces his friends to investigate and possibly gather evidence to catch him. Though it starts as a way to seek thrills and excitement in a town where nothing important ever seems to happen, things quickly become a game of cat and mouse with very high stakes for everyone involved ...

Join us as we discuss and give commentary about the scenes from the movie that stood out to us the most! We also ponder on some of the lingering questions that this film can leave a viewer with. Then, we briefly discuss how it would compare to movies in the "elevated horror" category, in spite of it not being a horror film in the traditional sense.

The Bermuda Triangle is an area extending from the coast of Florida, to Puerto Rico, to the island of Bermuda. Over the years, many ships and aircraft have either crashed or mysteriously vanished while travelling over it. While there are scientists who claim that there is nothing supernatural or unexplainable about the area, the truth is that some of the occurrences have been pretty bizarre.

We decided to talk about the cases that stood out the most to us, providing some details and opinions. Then, we move on to sharing and discussing some of the theories and legends that people have shared over the years. We talk about the tale of a giant octopus that lives inside the blue holes in the area, to the three unusual and unidentified objects that were found under the water, among other things.

Have you ever been approached by what appears to be a normal child wearing a hoodie, only to discover that their eyes are completely black when you talk to them? If so, then you have encountered what is called a Black Eyed Kid (BEK).

On this episode, Mariah shares a story about a person's possible encounter with one of these beings. We then discuss their origins, as some people consider them to be ghosts, while others think they could be vampires or even aliens. Also, we ask the question of where evil could come from, and whether or not children could be truly evil.

For the last part of the episode, Chuy goes full nerd and brings in connections to theories of Freudian psychology about child development.

Aaaaand we're back! After taking an unexpectedly long break, EMBL has returned. The circumstances are bittersweet because Bel is no longer able to be the cohost of the show. we'd like to thank her for helping out as long as she did, and she will definitely be missed :(

This is the Season 7 Premiere episode, and we decided to talk about a topic that we had covered a while back, which is none other than the folk legend of the Lechuza. If you're unfamiliar with it, it's basically the owl animal form of a witch in Hispanic folklore. We covered its origins more in depth in Episode 38, but for this occasion, both of us share some stories that happened to us and people we know that have to do with the Lechuza.

For the second part of the episode, Mariah talks about her journey as a horror content creator and a few other things.

Freddy Krueger has been unable to invade the dreams of the youth of Elm Street since the townspeople developed a plan to suppress their dreams. He decides to enlist and resurrect Jason Voorhees, who has been confined to hell for a few years as well. A group of teens is caught in the middle of the two killers, who may not be so willing to keep working together for very long ...

Join us as we talk about the battle of the ages! As usual, we discuss the plot and main scenes of the movie, as well as speculate about other things. We got so carried away that we had no time for any additional content! :P

This episode also marks the end of Bel's first season as cohost, and we really want to thank everyone that has been supportive during this period of transition. We're planning some changes to freshen things up for the podcast, so stay tuned for that!

There's a secret in the town of Antonio Bay. When a mysterious fog starts to manifest and cause disruptions in the power grid and other machines, the local priest realizes that the dark history behind the town's founding is finally catching up with them. We talk about how the groups of protagonists prepare for the final battle with the evil Pennywise in their respective universe. Along the way, we find out about Chuy's apparent phobia of babies, among many other curious things ...

We then move on to discuss some psychological aspects of the characters we did not cover in the previous episode, namely Richie, Stan, and Mike. We present hypothetical scenarios in which their destinies could have unfolded as well.

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end, but not before we give these movies and incarnations of Pennywise scores! We can say that one of us was pretty harsh when it came to their ratings ...

The second episode of our 6th season is upon us!

We decided to keep trying some different things for our new format, so we'll be covering both cinematic versions of It for this episode, but only their respective first halves. Even so, there is a lot to discuss, from some plot points and key scenes, to the Pennywise characterization in each version.

Besides that, we then move the discussion into clown related rants, only to finish things off with a discussion of the psychological themes for some of the characters in the movies.

This is episode 66, which marks the beginning of Season 6 ... muahaha :P

Also, it is the debut of Bel as the new EMBL cohost! Her commentary will be funny and insightful, so we're sure you'll enjoy our content moving forward. Also, we are now a Rated R podcast, so you will be hearing a few naughty words on our episodes from now on ...

As for the topic, I decided to give Bel a warm welcome and talk about her favorite scary movie villain, which is none other than the Creeper from the Jeepers Creepers series. In the spirit of our format change, we actually talked about all three movies in one episode, and we focused our attention on the character more than the plot. We speculate as to what his true nature might be, as well as talk about what the expectations would be in the upcoming fourth movie in this series.
