EP47 - ANZAC DAY | Convo with Willie Apiata VC and special guests regarding the meaning of ANZAC Day...>
#aroha #connection #special #matemateaonei #whanau This conversation took place at the end of a beautiful day in Whakatāne New Zealand at Willie Apiata VC's home. We spoke about Anzac Day with Willie and some of his Bro's.  We particularly spoke about the events from the Day - Saturday 23rd April 2022. The day before (22nd April) Willie Apiata VC contacted some of his Brothers and invited them to join him in getting out in the community and handing out some poppies in preparation for ANZAC Day.  ALL accepted - Hopefully this conversation helps you get a bit more of an understanding of what drives Willie to do what he does, and at the same time get a bit of an insight into some of the relationships and bonds that connect servicemen and Women and their families, regardless of where they served and/or for how long.  We have a bit of a laugh at each other expense - but to be honest the biggest laughs were had when I didn't have the camera rolling.  Kia ora Willie, Willie's Son Barton, (Willie's Mum - Mum), Hayley and her Mum, Karl or Carl 😂 Sorry bro didn't ask you how you spell your name, Aaron, and Mac.  Also BIG Thank you to the Whakatāne RSA and to the incredible and generous people of Whakatāne. Your support and generosity was simply amazing to behold.  Special thank you to Nikolao, Dion, Todd and Allan for their brief and personal messages on what Anzac Day means to them. We thank you so much for doing that. Next year we'll look to give more notice. 💯 👊   Much love and respect to ALL who are currently serving and your families - Thank you Likewise to those who have served and your families for supporting you to be able to serve.  Thank you to all those who are preparing to serve 🙏   They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old.  Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.  At the going down of the sun, and in the morning,  We will remember them We will remember them.    E kore rātou e kaumātuatia, Pēnei i a tātou kua mahue nei. LEST WE FORGET!  Apologies - We couldn't use "The Last Post" without breeching copyright.

EP42 - Thank You - Comments and Feedback!
#thankyou #wdw #intheserviceofothers #epichaotearoa #NZ #Australia #livedexperiences  It's well overdue primarily because both Brian and I being time poor and myself personally lacking confidence in my ability to learn some of this stuff.  Sorry I got excited when I learned a couple of new things lol - that's why the bits at the start of the video. It's probably normal to those who know how to do this sort of animation stuff - but it was a HUGE achievement for me 😂 😂   But, I just needed to push that to the side and punch on and get amongst it.  This video is purely to express our thanks and appreciation to all of those who have been kind enough to support us through your comments, messages, emails and calls. THANK YOU ALL.  We've said all along that we'll get better and we will continue to try and do that. Thank you for your patience with us to date - standby, we're just getting started.  Apologies for missing all the other messages that have been sent - I just didn't have time to take and download all the screen shots, edit the relevant and then compile everything - so I just grabbed literally a handful and tried to create something that is hopefully semi-ok.  Appreciate you ALL,  Joe & Brian Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Co-Founders  WDW!   Music: https://www.bensound.com

EP39 - With Anthony Gadenne #WDW | Face your Fears
In this episode Joe had the privilege of connecting with and having a conversation with Anthony Gadenne (aka Gads). A former member of the Australian Special Air Service who has turned his passion of serving others through his military service and actions in to becoming a practicing Medical Doctor. We invite you to tune in to this conversation and have a listen to Gads as he speaks about some of his experiences during selection, cycle while serving as an operator and life after the Regiment. Along the way he provides some great advice to not only potential aspiring SAS applicants, but the information he shares is applicable and helpful for anyone.    We have no doubt Gads' comments, thoughts, messages (spoken and unspoken) will resonate with many regardless of your profession, experience and/or aspirations. Thank you Gads for your service / continued service, and for taking the time to share a bit about yourself. We know and appreciate that it's not a common thing for people like yourself who have served in these types of units, which makes us even more grateful that you would take the time to come on our podcast in the hopes of helping someone else out there who might need to hear what you have to say. EP38 - Part 2 With Philip Taulelei #WDW | Self-Reflection is Gold
This is part 2 of the conversation with Philip 'A cheeky Samoan lad' Taulelei. A former Australian Special Air Service Operator and Current Security Risk Specialist. Check out part 1 first if you haven't listened to that yet. Philip joined 6 Field Squadron (TF) Royal New Zealand Engineers before heading over to Australia and joining 3RAR (Parachute Regiment). He was then posted to the Australian Parachute Training School before he submitted his application to do selection for the Australian Special Air Service Regiment. There was far too much information to delve into during our brief time together - so we'll connect with Philip again later in 2022. In the meantime we've broken this conversation up into 2 parts purely because of the amount of information to try and take in and digest. Rather than waffle in this write up - we'll leave it to you to have a listen and take away those things that you, we hope you enjoy part 2. EP36 - Solo Update #WDW | Keep Smashing
In this solo update you unfortunately only have myself as Brian is busy with work.   In this quick update I talk about some of our guests prior to and post Christmas and those who have been on so far in this New Year.  I speak about our intentions to try and shorten our episodes to 1hr max (Wish us luck 😂 ).   I speak briefly to one of the points which Bill Bestic spoke about in my conversation with him to try and put another lens on a topic that has generated a fair bit of feedback and conversation with former members.    I mention our upcoming guests on the podcast and also update you on my comments to my co-founding partner Brian Osman lol.  Finally, I mention our focus to keep thrashing and inviting our former Kiwi SAS members to come on the podcast. It's slow going in that department and will probably stay that way - but all good, we respect their decisions and reasons.   We're gonna keep going regardless. :-)  I also managed to stay within the 30-40min window which I had told myself I would try to do. Yes!   Stay awesome, Keep Smashing & Thrashing - hopefully you get something out of this and we'll see you next week.   Intro/Outro Music: https://www.bensound.com  WDW!

EP33 - Travis Hocart #WDW | Your Invisible back pack
In this episode Joe & Brian had the privilege of connecting with and having a conversation with Travis Hocart.  Note: Due to some technical difficulties this episode has the most editing we've ever done - We apologise in advance for that. Travis comes from a background of tactical policing and counter terrorism work, commencing with his role in the WA Police Tactical Response Group in 2000. After moving into the world of Close Personal Protection in post-war Baghdad in 2004, Travis then spent 8 years in the highly secretive Air Marshal program, leading small team operations throughout Australia and overseas destinations. Following 15 years in law enforcement, the lure of the private sector led him moving into the world of workplace health and safety, where was able to deploy his risk management tactics to various industries such as commercial construction, agriculture, mining, and remote field exploration. Sitting alongside his professional development, has always been Travis’ keen interest in military history. A chance invitation to walk the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea in 2009, kick started the next stage of his life’s journey. An opportunity to become a trek guide eventually morphed into Travis forming his own trekking business, Kokoda Crossing, in 2018. After a promising start to the business, Covid related travel restrictions have significantly impacted operations, such that Travis has been required to fall back on skills learnt from his past … resilience, adaptability, perseverance and a “back yourself” attitude. Travis opens up on a number of topics mentioned above plus so much more. Tune in so that you can leverage Travis' extensive experience and apply aspects to your own situation in positive ways. We invite you also to please check out his website and get a group together to participate in one of his incredible tours. https://kokodacrossing.com/our-tour/australian-tours/ #Police #AFP #TRG #AirMarshal #CloseProtection #Australia #KokodaCrossing #Transition #TransTasman #GrowYourNetwork #Education #InvisibleBackPack #GoodBlokes #Empathy #Leadership #GetOut&TalkToPeople Intro/Outro Music: https://www.bensound.com

THANK YOU & CONGRATULATIONS to you both!  Ladies and Gentlemen the one and Only - Harry Moffitt. During this conversation we cover alot of ground yet we don't even scratch the surface. Harry talks about some of the operational perspectives but not in the way you might expect. It's not about trying to tell war stories - He doesn't need to try, he's lived them. But what he does share may resonate with those who have served or who aspire to serve. Who knows, it may resonate or surprise those who haven't served in these types of environments. Eye opening - would be an understatement. Harry speaks to topics such as: The humanity of operational service - Three blocks - how excellent communication builds trust - Cutting yourself some slack - The Commentator in your head - It's ok to be vulnerable - The need to have a plan B - Transitioning to civilian life - The importance of keeping a journal - Relationships, Resetting & Rituals - What it takes to serve in the Special Forces - Plus so much more.... It's no wonder Harry served in the unit and the ADF for as long as he did - No one, and no organisation would want to lose an asset like Harry. EP27 - Nick Caldwell #WDW Allowing Greater Bandwidth
It is our Privilege and Honour to have the one and only - Nick Caldwell on our podcast as part of the series: In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins! Nick is a former Australian SASR Operator - Team 2IC - Team Specialist and Successful Business Owner. Having accumulated more than 12years worth of Special Forces experience, it's safe to say that Nick is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to speaking on topics related to this environment and the impact they can have on individuals and relationships in both positive and negative ways. Coupled with not only an extremely successful career within the SAS - Nick has taken that drive, determination, resilience, integrity and humility into the business world. Establishing strong partnerships and thriving businesses through his skill and competence as a leader and his uncanny ability to strategically plan and execute effectively. Although Nick's service has been first class, there was a period of time where things were not so great and this significantly impacted him. He shares his experiences and more in the hopes of positively helping others. It's apparent that Nick's sincere desire is to leave the Sandy Beret and Winged Dagger in a better position than when he was bestowed with the honour and responsibility of wearing it. Nick shares his first hand lived experiences in more detail in relation to the Australian SAS Selection process, Cycle of training and his transition out of the unit. Along the way we have a laugh and call out a couple of funny stories which were well hidden until now lol. At the same time acknowledging some great people who have had a positive impact on our lives through their consistent example and friendship. During this conversation Nick shares powerful insights into: What qualities are sought when selecting SF operators. Memorable experiences during his selection and cycle, and prior to him going on selection and cycle. Mental strategies and tools he used when under duress. Identifying and working on weaknesses. The type of training which will allow for better transfer and application for the work required. Giving people the benefit of the doubt. The need and ability to build relationships - plus so much more. We also discuss a noticeable difference between the NZ and Australian SAS Cycle phase and we hear Nick's reasons and explanation as to why. This was hugely eye opening for Joe hearing Nick speak about this as it was completely different to the NZSAS Cycle environment and it made so much sense (in hindsight) for Joe as to why this is/would be effective. Not that the NZSAS Cycle is ineffective - that's not the case at all. But perhaps it might be worth exploring... EP18 - Helen Hotai - #WDW - Operating from the Home Front
As promised, part of the new series "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" seeks to share the lived experiences from multiple perspectives. Coming up this week, we have the opportunity to hear from one of these brave and courageous woman who have had to carry the weight and burden of maintaining the home, raising the children, feeling isolated and alone - plus so much more. As the pattern has been so far - in order to try and help others, the founders of Epich Aotearoa understand the need to strive to lead by example. We can't expect others to allow themselves to be vulnerable and open to judgement and/or criticism if we're not prepared to go first. It's not acceptable to us, to ask someone else to do something we're not prepared to do. So, Joe (Co-Founder) asked his wife Helen, if she would go first and share her unfiltered insights, perspectives, challenges and more from her side. She humbly agreed. Helen brings an interesting view point in many respects as she met her husband before he went through the NZ selection & cycle - saw the disappointment when he didn't get badged in the NZ unit - Left her family behind and moved to Australia - Dealt with extended periods of time apart from her husband (isolated and without family or friends) - Faced the uncertainty of "will my husband come home" and "will he be different if he does" - The challenges for her and their children, post life in the SAS, plus so much more. This conversation is raw, deeply personal and at times painful. But the intent and purpose behind it is to serve others and help them know that they're not alone and that there is life and light at the end of the tunnel - even when things appear to be at there darkest. Ladies and Gentlemen, Aotearoa New Zealand - Introducing: Wife - Mother - Teacher - Protector - Law Graduate and Former Soldier in the NZDF. The one and only Helen Epirosa Tuiali'i Hotai. EP16 Part 2 - Joe Hotai - #WDW - Overcoming the Endless Hill
*Part 2* Kia Ora Everybody - With the announcement of the new series "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" as part of the Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast, being communicated Friday 01st October 2021. We thought it timely to air the first episode this coming Monday 04th October. You're invited to tune in, as Brian Osman (Co-Founding partner) of Epich delves deep into a conversation with Joe Hotai - about his time completing the NZ SAS Selection and Cycle of training, prior to moving to Australia and completing their selection and cycle, before being assigned to an operational squadron. In this conversation Brian provides an opportunity for Joe to speak about topics that have otherwise been kept relatively private. The intent of this particular series and the aspirational outcomes, centre around striving to assist and support the individual who is willing to share "their" experiences in relation to their time in the special forces. Extending beyond the aspirations of trying to help the individual, includes the additional hopes of reaching and potentially helping others. Whether they have served in similar units, or the defence force in general, or not at all. We feel that through their stories and lived experiences, there are valuable learnings available to help and support the broader community as a whole - thus providing another potential mechanism, in the pursuit of helping people, to Create a Better Future. We felt it wouldn't be right if the Co-Founding partner Joe Hotai wasn't prepared to go first and allow himself to be vulnerable to judgement and/or criticism. It was therefore necessary that Joe be the first one interviewed. Nothing was out of bounds with Joe and he willingly opened up on a number of raw, sometimes painful and deeply impactful lessons. During this warts and all conversation we find out and hear from Joe's perspective about: - What drove him to want to join the SAS - What challenges were involved in getting there and staying there - Why he wasn't able to participate in the NZ Badging ceremony with his peers - The move to Australia and going through everything again to join the Australian SAS - The poor decisions Joe made based on his frame of mind at the time and his own ego and pride - The value of his relationship and love for his wife and family - The importance of a sense of humour **There is a part around mid-way through of the conversation, where joe is by himself and speaking about Brian's interview etiquette - Crack up** - The transition from special forces to civilian life and trying to fill that void - The difficulties in letting go and moving forward - The realisation of the effective transferable skills attained - Plus so much more.... During the planning process for this series, we discovered our desire and "need" to hear the stories of the spouses/partners who are deeply tied and connected to these life events - in order to gain their insights and to hear, see and feel of their "equally" important experiences in the hope of helping others. Stay tuned for these stories from the amazing 'significant others.' To those looking for help, guidance etc - we invite you to tune in - there just might be something here for you or for someone you know. Spread the word, if you think it will be of service and benefit for others and feel free to support us on the journey. Finally - To those former or current serving members of the special forces (including your significant others) we invite you to come on our podcast, step into a non-judgemental environment, while feeling supported, respected, enabled and empowered to share your valuable lived experiences, in the hope of helping others and Creating a Better Future! Be bold, be brave Contact us - We will reply....Thank you for your service - Listen out.... Who Dares Wins (WDW)

Kia Ora Everybody - With the announcement of the new series "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" as part of the Epich Aotearoa - Create a Better Future Podcast, being communicated Friday 01st October 2021.

New Series Announcement: In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins
In less than 2 weeks, we'll be launching a new series as part of the Epich Aotearoa podcast - called "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins". In this series we'll take a deep dive into the mindset, attitude and approach of former members of the Special Air Service otherwise simply referred to as the (SAS). Seeking to understand and learn from this particular group of peoples experiences leading up to, during and post life in the special forces. During these raw and unfiltered conversations we'll cover a lot of ground, and with a thoughtful and respectful approach look to discuss topics such as: - What drove or inspired these people to join such a unit - Was it everything they thought it would be - What are the greatest lessons, life in the special forces has taught these individuals - How have they applied those lessons in their everyday life - What were the most difficult aspects of the job - How do they deal with pressure and/or expectation - How was the transition from the Special Forces, into civilian life - The effects a career in the special forces can have on relationships....Plus so much more What could we learn through connecting to these experiences - how could we apply some of the lessons learned to our own lives and/or situations - what could we achieve if we were able to adopt certain attributes and/or attitudes to situations - What have these individuals learned from people who haven't served in the special forces... We acknowledge that it's not a common practice for individuals who have served in these environments to speak about their time in these units for various reasons - but we hope that as this group of people hear and feel of the conversations and connect to the messages being shared - we trust that more will be willing to engage with us, for the purposes of continuing to serve others and assisting with the overarching vision and purpose to "Create a Better Future". If you would like to get involved by putting forward some questions that you'd like to have answered, we invite you to send through your questions to: info@epichpodcast.co.nz Please include - Your first name and where you're from. And with your questions, we ask that you please be mindful and respectful with them. We thank you all for your support and feedback - we'll continue to show up each day and each week, as we strive to share and facilitate content worthy of your time and attention. We hope you're safe wherever you are - we hope you're happy - we hope that whatever challenges you may be going through that you realise "The obstacle in front of you, is never as great as the power behind you" Stay tuned Aotearoa, Kia Kaha, Be Strong - "In the Service of Others - Who Dares Wins" is coming soon.....LeshGo!
