279: The Gilly Episode - Money, Career, Religion, Faith, Death Re-Thought and the Myth of Retirement
279: The Gilly Episode - Money, Career, Religion, Faith, Death Re-Thought and the Myth of Retirement
At long last, our first interview! This man has been mentioned many times before on the podcast, and has played a significant role in both our lives...   Michael Gill did have a glittering career, as a lawyer, and in various other engagements, but to us he is cherished more as a source of wisdom, companionship and guidance.   He is a man of vocation and dedication, a source of joy and community to all those he encounters. He listens but tries never to judge. He thinks deeply, and often throws around words like 'Helicopter!', 'Interconnectedness,' 'Not bloody siloism!', 'Peace and Joy' and of course, 'Just Be.' He's always there for those who need him, and has a sharp and beautiful sense of humour.    Though he'll say this is no good for his ego, I must say, we consider him to be quite ahead of his time, and he defies almost every stereotype you'd associate with someone of his age and standing in society.  Affectionately dubbed 'Gilly' by those close to him, we wanted to commemorate and capture some of his beautiful insights in an episode. This is dedicated not just to our dear friend, but to the intimate group of Gilly's companions who cherish him as much as we do.   Here is a man who plants the seeds.     SUMMARY:   0:00 Throwback, 'You people waste the now... I don't have that option.' & Intro 7:45 Living in the Now & Anxiety toward the Future 12:30 Struggles living in the 'Present' 16:00 What 'practical' things end up distracting us from life? 20:50 Is it easier for older people to make the most of the present? 25:20 Getting better at appreciating life 30:30 Stepping down from partner at Major Law Firm 40:00 Being between 70 and 80 years of age isn't too bad 43:00 Benefit of admitting what you don't really know in life 45:00 How does your Christian Faith relate to broader awareness? 48:00 The Matthew Perry Story & You can't fool your heart 55:00 Questions about money are always questions about something else 1:02:00 Why do Westerners grow flowers? 1:04:00 No GFC in Cambodia in 2008/9 1:08:27 Gilly's relationship with money 1:12:00 the Gift of not being paid (in money) 1:25:00 What's different about Gilly? 278: The Risk See-Saw, (We Don’t Understand Life’s Real Risks). PART 12, The Myth of Failure Series
278: The Risk See-Saw, (We Don’t Understand Life’s Real Risks). PART 12, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 12 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The conclusion to the series is another first-time idea, very Taleb-inspired, called ‘The Risk See-Saw’. It denotes that, trying to control for Small Risks creates big risks, but trying to avoid big risks makes us more sensitive to small risks… the theory is that most of us spend our entire lives worrying about exactly the opposite things we should be worrying about… and we end up creating them. We hope you enjoyed the series. Thanks, and remember, keep opening Doors for others. For the rest of the series head to Youtube, Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts. 277: The U-Curve of Certainty & Where Most Experts Go Wrong. PART 11, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 11 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The first time we’ve discussed ‘The U-Curve of Certainty’, a theory about nature, chance, risk, truth, predictions, generalisations and prescriptions, which helps us cut through the b.s. of life and wasteful planning. In contrast, we get clarity about what we can control and believe in. 272: The Slingshot Principle (Setbacks aren't really setbacks). PART 6, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 6 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ The Slingshot Principle is one of the oldest ideas on the WJW Blog, and details when the worst-case scenario is actually the best-case scenario from one perspective. Examples include the story of Nelson Mandela.    For the written articulation of this idea check out [the blog post] https://withjoewehbe.com/2020/08/31/the-slingshot-principle-why-the-worst-case-scenario-is-the-best-case-scenario/   For the rest of the series head to Youtube, Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.   FOR IMPORTANT UPDATES JOIN THE DOORMAN NEWSLETTER:  https://thedoorman.substack.com/ only highly important updates, at this rate 4-5 emails per year.   I hate email newsletters.    For more on me check out https://withjoewehbe.com/everything-joe/   I ENCOURAGE YOU TO REACH OUT FOR A CONVERSATION:  If you’re open for a no-agenda conversation, for no particular reason, submit a bit about yourself to The Constant Student: https://www.constantstudent.com.au/

271: Experience is the real degree. PART 5, The Myth of Failure Series
Part 5 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ Revisiting the story of Tim Ferriss, who created ‘his own MBA’ by taking the $120k he would have spent on tuition, and investing it directly into companies over two years.   With all my costly mistakes, I empathise with the idea that the only real degree is the experience itself.    For the rest of the series head to Youtube, Spotify, Apple or wherever you get your podcasts.

Part 3 of 12, of Season 5: ‘The Myth of Failure an Re-framing of Risk.’ This idea unpacks the lack of control we have, and thus, part of surrendering to life’s intentional randomness is the relaxing and releasing of fear! #265 : I've Veered Away From What Matters & Why I'm Taking A Break From The Podcast.
265 episodes ago I began a podcast about sharing wisdom and help people avoid life's biggest mistakes.  I realised recently that I had been tracing the very path of those mistakes.    I had become the very thing I spoke about avoiding.    I had confused what I was meant to do for myself and others.    So, I'm taking a break from the podcast again. I will return in some way shape or form, firstly with my newsletter as writing is where things begin for me. You can get that here and my mission there will be to make you laugh, cry or unsubscribe each week.   https://thedoorman.substack.com/

How do you boost job security in difficult economic times? While we're at it, what's safer? Startups, corporate companies or being self-directed?   Today we unpack the options and possibilities with one key albeit simple message - don't be a commodity. We draw on examples and evidence from thinkers like actor Jim Carrey and author and thought leader Nassim Nicholas Taleb.    Sounds simple right? Remember, competence is the ultimate security - the problem is that most people look for things to be easy.   Check out more videos on the channel as lately we're unpacking money and concepts relating to it.   For more sign up at The Doorman or check out the site:  https://thedoorman.substack.com/ If you're new to me and are bored enough to read my story (and learn more)... https://withjoewehbe.com/about/
