Discipline Over Fear

Discipline Over Fear

By Joel Patrick

I was a Division I athlete in name only. I had elite speed and athleticism but never became elite. I was limited by disappointment and failure became my identity. I lacked the psychological aptitude that makes college athletes successful on and off the field. After years of disappointments and seeing how people's success led to the next success I feared that the first success was nothing but luck.

But then something happened. I changed the way I thought. I faced my fears by developing new disciplines. And today, I’m helping others create vision and act on their goals.

Why Your Goals Are Holding You Back

Why Your Goals Are Holding You Back

In this episode of Discipline Over Fear, Nick and I discuss New Year's resolutions, baseball statistics and compound interest.
So many of us say: I'll start tomorrow, next week, next month or next year? But, what if the success of our plans depends, not so much on what we choose to do tomorrow, but on the very thing we choose to do next?
In our attempts to make improvements in our lives we look for The home run. But the home run may not even be the most valuable statistic in baseball, much less our dreams. Perhaps success is found by understanding our motives and assessing where we are in proximity to our dreams.
Maybe if we do these things, we’d find that success is nearer to us right now, than any other day that might be in front of us.

Joel Patrick: A Working Title

Joel Patrick: A Working Title

This was an easy episode to record. But it was a tough one to release. God has blessed everyone with a gift. That gift is an invitation, a ticket for the journey of a lifetime. A journey filled with challenges and rewards. Disappointments and victories. If we choose not to give up, the journey presents us with a new gift. This new gift is the story we get to tell others in hopes that they will not give up in the face of disappointment. That they will stick it out and get their reward. God always has more for your story. But first you must accept the challenges then and only then will you feel the exhilaration of victory. HAPPY LISTENING!!!

The Elephant: STAY IN IT w/Coach Shane Miller

The Elephant: STAY IN IT w/Coach Shane Miller

I often tell my clients there are two ways to solidify proper movement patterns. The first way is to maintain proper form under load. The second way is to maintain proper form under exhaustion. Both require a great deal of intention in order to avoid injury while improving outcomes. In this EPISODE I sit down with former teammate and coaching partner, Shane Miller, to discuss the importance of INTENTION in pursuit of GOALS. Suffering is unavoidable. We can choose to give up under the strain or persist and get the reward. There is a such thing as GOOD PAIN. As coaches, Shane and I understand the role we play in explaining to our clients what they should be experiencing. The time will come when you must decide whether you will stay under the load or give into exhaustion. We're here to remind you that you will get the REWARD if you CHOOSE to STAY IN IT.

The Elephant: First to Lead w/Sarah Coleman

The Elephant: First to Lead w/Sarah Coleman

We've all seen examples of people living the goals we want to achieve. But it's likely we've never seen the process on the way to achieving them. What can we do when everyone around us is following the path to their goals, but we know our goals are different? If you've always had a drive to do more but keep waiting for a leader to emerge and show you the way, you might be surprised at how that leader will be revealed. In this conversation with my friend Sarah Coleman we discuss percpectives of leadership. As you listen to her story you may just find that you're the leader you've been waiting for. Use this knowledge to weild your imagination with intent. Happy listening!

Hypnotized: The Elephant (Part 2)

This is PART 2 of my conversation with Brian Conner. If you haven't listened to PART 1 I would encourage you to go back and listen. In that episode Brian gives some practical ways as to how he changed his negative mindset to a positive mindset that helped shape his behaviors. I would also encourage you to check out my BLOG at HILTSYSTEMS.COM. Brian and I refer back to that post often and it would provide a bit of context to the series we are in called "WE'RE ALL HYPNOTIZED." I know you will get a lot of wisdom from this conversation. I know I did. Use this information to wield your imagination with intent. Happy listening!

Hypnotized: The Elephant (Part 1)

In this episode I sit down with my good friend Brian Conner to discuss the well known story about the elephant attached to the rope and stake. In the story the elephant is held to the stake only by his belief that the stake can hold him. This is the idea of HYPNOSIS. We are limited when we fail to see our potential. Brian gives some practical applications as to how he removes himself from circumstances in order to pursue his potential. Take this knowledge and wield you IMAGINATION with intent. Happy listening.

The Gift of Risk

The Gift of Risk

Some are born risk takers, some achieve a sense of risk, and some have risk thrust upon them. We would like to have the courage to drop what we are doing and pursue our passions, but sometimes the cost is too great. In this episode I have a conversation with my good friend Moses Rivera. After moving from Buffalo to Tampa, he experienced a 6 month season of unemployment which thrust him into the entrepreneur life. Moses is both a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator and a Realtor. But what makes him special isnt this rare combination of credentials, it's really his heart that separates him from the competition. Listen as Moses discusses what it feels like to make the jump from corporate life to owning his own business. Hear how he was able to connect the dots between his skills, passion and desire to help others. And observe how creativity has given him a platform to help Spanish speaking home buyers avoid getting taken advantage of. I've waited for this conversation for a long time. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Weild this knowledge and you imagination with intent. Happy listening!

Free-Styling with Nick Cuviello

So many of us sit and wait for clarity before making a move because we think that we'll make the wrong decision. But the only wrong decision is indecision. When we over analyze each step, we potentially forfeit the good for just good enough. In this episode Nick shares the hard decisions he had to make to give up good things in hopes of something even better. And even though the choices weren't easy, becoming paralyzed by the obstacles that stood in his way was not an option. He knew he had to figure it out. He had to FREESTYLE.

John Davis - Values, Basics, Slowdown, Prioritize

John Davis - Values, Basics, Slowdown, Prioritize

In this episode of the Hilt Podcast w/JP I sit down with the wonderfully made John Davis. John is a native of Littleton, Colorado where he still lives with his wife and 3 kids. I first met John when I moved to the Denver area back in 2014. I was instantly drawn to his approach to 'the process'. When everyone else is looking for a reason not to do the difficult thing, John looks for every reason why he should do it.

During our conversation John explains how values and fundamentals are key in creating his vision. He shares how identifying the basics is vital to executing correctly and consistently. He also spoke with me about how his gift to handle and execute so much can sometimes be a limitation. So, he intentionally takes time to slow things down and prioritize what is truly important.

What I learned from John in this conversation is that what we say we believe can only be tested in the fire. And it's not until the smoke clears that we discover our true beliefs. Our beliefs determine who we become on the other side of pain.

I know you will learn a ton from this episode and I highly recommend you share it with someone. Yield this knowledge with care and intent. Enjoy the conversation.

Randy Tomlin Knowing Yourself and the Game

Randy Tomlin Knowing Yourself and the Game

Randy Tomlin nicknamed "Whispers" is a former left-handed pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was listed as 5'11" and 170 pounds.

Tomlin attended Liberty University and was drafted by the Pirates in the 18th round (460th overall) of the 1988 amateur entry draft. He posted good numbers in the minor leagues and after a couple years made his major league debut on August 6, 1990. His career highlights include a 2.55 ERA in 1990 and a 2.98 ERA in 1991. Tomlin played his final Major League game on May 20, 1994. He went 30-31 in 94 career starts with 297 career strikeouts.

After retiring from Major League Baseball, Tomlin was the pitching coach at Liberty University from 1997-2006.[1] He then went on to become the pitching coach for the Washington Nationals affiliate Potomac Nationals of the single-A Carolina League from 2007-2008 and the pitching coach of Nationals double-A affiliate Harrisburg Senators of the Eastern League from 2009-2011. He currently lives in Lynchburg, Virginia, and is the head coach at Liberty Christian Academy in Lynchburg, Virginia.

In this episode I speak with my old college coach about how he overcame his limitations by developing his knowledge of baseball and how he built his capacity to compete at the highest level by challenging himself to compete in life on a daily basis. This approach to life and baseball prepared him to capitalize on the opportunities of a lifetime.

This conversation was an absolute honor to be a part of. I hope you enjoy listening to Randy as much as I did. And I know you'll get something out of it for sure. WIELD THIS KNOWLEDGE WITH INTENT. Happy listening.

Proficient - Prologue

This short book is written to my younger self, who for years struggled to find joy in this life. I wanted to tell him what I have learned from my education and from life experiences. Things that might help him find the joy in the journey. I wanted to tell him that pain and struggle are a part of the abundant life. I wanted him to know before it got too late for him. But it is too late for him. So, I write this for myself and anyone still seeking a dream when everything and everyone around them is telling them it's over.

1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back

1 Step Forward, 2 Steps Back

Even though Tom Styn was Western New York baseball's high school player of the year he knew his chances of playing division 1 were slim, due to his height. But Tom defied the odds and went on to accomplish his dream of playing D1 baseball, though it wasn't a smooth ride. What I hope you get from Tom's story is that success isn't a linear progression. But if we are willing to humble ourselves, assess our situation honestly and draw on the things which made us successful in the past, we can turn 2 steps back into 1 giant leap forward.
