In the landscape of American Soccer, there are a number of pioneers of the beautiful game. One of those pioneers, Mexico Liga Santos Laguna Legend, and member of the US National Team, Allan Adams joins the Three Old Goalies to discuss his career.

Adams was the first American Goal Keeper to play in the Mexican League and has some amazing stories to tell.


Allan joined the show back in October but we had some technical issues that made this recording a crazy series of edits to get released here in January of 2024.


Also joining this episode is Pat Johnston of White Glove Goalkeeping to talk about Allan and his career. Adams credits Johnston with changing the direction of his soccer career.

Season 3 Episode 2: Sarah Lowdon joins the 3 Old Goalies

Continuing our segments hosting some of the best Women's Soccer "influencers" we know, 3 Old Goalies welcomes in Sarah Lowdon:. Originally from Newcastle, England, Lowdon started her playing career at Newcastle United Women's FC (2002-2008). She continued her playing career and studies at Gateshead College (2006-2008) where she was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Lowdon began her collegiate career in the United States at Mississippi State University in 2008 then transferred to McNeese State University to play for the Cowgirls from 2009-2011. She graduated from McNeese St. with her Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education. She went on to complete her Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and Health Promotion as a double concentration in 2014 while also beginning her coaching career as a two-year Volunteer Coach for the Cowgirls. Lowdon also represented to San Francisco Nighthawks in the WSPL. Following graduation, Lowdon began a year-long stint as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Wayland Baptist University. During this time, she was also an adjunct instructor in the Health and Human Performance Department and earned her NSCA CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) in 2014. For the next two and half years, Lowdon served as an Assistant Coach for the Houston Dash in the NWSL. During this time, she also served as an assistant women’s soccer coach at Sam Houston State University. Lowdon was also an adjunct instructor in the Kinesiology Department. Lowdon joined the University of Florida Women’s Soccer program in June of 2017 as an equipment manager. While at UF, Lowdon earned a second Master’s Degree in Sports Management with a specialization in Athlete Development. She also served as an Adjunct Instructor and Teaching Assistant for three years in the Sport Management Department at the University of Florida. Lowdon has also earned her US Soccer Federation (USSF) National A-Senior Coaching License, United Soccer Coaches Premier Diploma and became PAADS (Professional Athlete Development Specialist) certified in December 2019. Season 3 Episode 1: Michelle Rayner joins the 3 Old Goalies

The Women's World Cup is in New Zealand and Australia this year and we felt like there was no better way to celebrate it than to bring in Michelle Rayner.

Rayner, a Kiwi and New Zealand National Team player, represented her country in the first-ever Women’s World Cup in 1991 in China. At this time, she has planted roots in Lexington Kentucky.

As is tradition here at the 3 Old Goalies, season 3 kicks off with some great stories. Michelle joins Boa, Bone, and EV to share her experiences over the years and talk a little bit about the World Cup.

Michelle is a staple of Soccer in the Bluegrass. From 3v3, the youth game, and men's and women's game Michelle is an influence on the game in the Bluegrass State.

From LMU in Tennessee, the University of Kentucky, High Point University, and back to the bluegrass with Tower Hill Sports and Lexington Sporting Club, Michelle shares her experiences and expertise with the 3 Old Goalies.

Season 2 Episode 20: Carla Overbeck joins 3 Old Goalies

As the 3 Old Goalies prepare for the start of the Women's World Cup this month, we welcome one of the most influential women in the history of Soccer in the United States Carla Overbeck.

Over the last 31 years, Overbeck has worked with the Duke Blue Devils as Duke has advanced to the NCAA Tournament 28 times, including NCAA College Cup appearances in 2011, 2015, and 2017.

As a player at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) Overbeck was a four-time member of the NCAA All-Tournament Team and a two-time All-ACC selection. In addition, she was a member of the 1986 Soccer America All-America Freshman Team. She was also the Most Valuable Defensive Player of the 1988 NCAA Tournament.

Overbeck’s playing accomplishments include being an important part of the United States Women's National Team. Overbeck was an instrumental player for the U.S. in winning the 1991 Women’s World Cup in China. She captained the 1995 U.S. World Cup squad that advanced to the semifinals and also served as captain of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team that won the gold medal.

Her career achievements include:

- Olympic Gold Medalist (1996)

- Olympic Silver Medalist (2000)

- Goodwill Games Gold Medalist (1998)

- US Women’s National Team Member (1988-2000)

- WUSA Founders Cup II Champion (2002)

- National Soccer Sports HOF Inductee (2006)

- North Carolina Sports HOF Inductee (2010)

In this special Father’s Day Episode, Cliff and Steve McCrath are the first to share their combined and incredible soccer journey with us.  Both men have certainly over-achieved in their respective arenas.  In this episode, both men share their great stories with typical McCrath insight, humility, and humor. 

Cliff is in 12 Hall of Fames including the United States Soccer Hall of Fame. Cliff’s career includes 30 NCAA soccer tournament appearances.  At Seattle Pacific University, his team was runner-up 5 times and champion 5 times.  He’s the 2nd winningest men’s soccer coach in the NCAA.

Steve played on his dad’s 1986 championship team, runner-up on the 1990 team. As a coach, he won his first D2 championship in 2018 at Barry University in Miami Florida. At Barry, he had 9 D2 appearances in the NCAA tournament. Steve is currently the men’s head coach at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois.

Not only are the 3 Old goalies transfixed with the accomplishments of these men....we are in the presence of United States soccer ROYALTY!

What an amazing journey and career for a man that has been at almost every level of soccer as a player AND a coach! As a player from a stellar career in Holland, to playing in the NASL, APSL, USISL, MISL and many other leagues to coaching at Youth Club level, to High School, to College, to Professional, to National Team programs and beyond. Truly a remarkable career that is ongoing and one of the most interesting guests and episodes that 3 Old Goalies has hosted. In addition to the above accolades, Coach Rongen was the first coach of American Samoa to get a goal and a win. One of our original intentions for 3 Old Goalies was to share stories about how the game of soccer has been ‘grown’ in the US.
David Rubinson is a man who has been one of many ‘builders’ of the sport.
Dave played in college, and then started both the Men’s and Women’s programs at Texas Christian University in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
He also played on and then later coached several US Maccabi games entries.

In addition, Dave has been a US Soccer scout, ODP regional coach, Regional Director,  and National Team Staff Coach for decades.
Truly a servant of our game, and as with all 3OG guests, a true character of our game! 
3OG is extremely proud to call Dave a friend of our podcast, and we are thrilled to present Dave Rubinson on our latest episode.

Season 2 Episode 15- Jon Busch returns to 3 Old Goalies

Jon Busch returns to join the 3 Old Goalies again for a great episode of stories, and some insight on what it’s like to coach overseas and in the USL.  The UNC Charlotte Hall of Famer had a lengthy career across multiple leagues.  With over 470 matches in his career Jon played in multiple league including the highest league in our land, Major League Soccer.

Hershey Wildcats

Columbus Crew

Chicago Fire

San Jose Earthquakes

Indy Eleven

Jon also had some time at the national level with the U-17s and the USMNT.   

Upon ending his playing career, he signed a one-day contract with the Columbus Crew to retire with the Crew. His first MLS team.

Jon is currently coaching with Bob Lilly in Pittsburgh with the Riverhounds.  As a coach, Jon is well known for his ability to get the best out of his keepers.

Buschy truly is a friend of the show making multiple appearances over our two seasons and sharing some of the best stories about the beautiful game today.

But most importantly, to us 3 Old Goalies guys, Ralph is himself an "Old Goalie"!! Ralph was kind enough to call in as our special guest on the Ralph Lundy episode and of course, the soccer stories continued!! EV can tell you, first hand, that Ralph Polson was an outstanding collegiate GK. It was always a privilege to play against him--EV never beat Erskine--not only because Ralph was a fine GK, but because he was and is and always has been, a good guy, and the consummate gentleman. Ralph Lundy is truly an American soccer icon.
Having been a collegiate coach for well over 4 decades, Lundy has coached at all levels of soccer in the United States, with impressive stints at Western Carolina University, Erskine College, College of Charleston, Ralph has won countless coaching awards, Ralph has been inducted to 4 Soccer Halls of Fame. He has run the Ralph Lundy Soccer Academy for decades. In short, the man has been a pillar of the sport in the US.
However, one of Ralph's true gifts is his ability to remember and relate soccer stories across the timeline of his career. 3 Old Goalies was indeed fortunate to connect with Coach Lundy and the episode was so entertaining, funny, and long that we had to split the episode and make it 2 parts. This is PART ONE.

Season 2 Episode 11: Butch Lauffer

A self-proclaimed 'Dallas Boy' and original "Texas Longhorn" (not the University, football guys) Youth Soccer Club" player who spent the majority of his adolescence and teenage years on the Europe Continent playing soccer, and winning games and trophies, Butch stayed over and played in England in the 1970s - virtually unheard of at the time. Luckily for us, he had the foresight to also pursue his coaching badges before returning to TCU to finish his Master's Degree. A prolific clinician, coach, tactician and published author, Butch has touched the game on every single level of US Soccer. From U8 summer campers to MLS, to the Scottish FA and FIFA, Butch is respected and listened to on both sides of the Atlantic in both the women's and men's game, top to bottom. Butch is a "Football Guy", through and through. Lauffer has several foreign and domestic coaching licenses, including an English Football Association’s preparatory coaching license (1982), the United States Soccer Federation “A” license (1987) and the Irish Football Association Grade 1 coaching license (1989). Most recently, he earned a United European Football Association “A” license from the Wales Football Association in 1998 and a UEFA pro license through the Scottish Football Association in 2001. During the 1994 World Cup, he became a member of the USSF National coaching staff and assisted FIFA with the technical reports for all World Cup contests at the Dallas venue and taught coaching courses on developing coaching skills for the “A,” “B,” and “C” levels. Butch is about to enter his 33rd season as head men’s soccer coach perennial NCAA power West Texas A&M University, a program that he not only founded, but also coached the Women's side for the first decade of its existence. This year he will eclipse his 600th win as a Collegiate Head Coach. He has been a mainstay of youth soccer at every level in Texas and across the USA and for the NSCAA for the majority of his life. Pat Johnston joins the 3 Old Goalies podcast for the third time to share his work with TheSquad.com and talk with the boys about the beautiful game.

The former All-American has seemingly done it all. Not only did he earn his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Duke University but he also has a Masters in Fine Arts from Sewanee: The University of the South.

Pat played professionally at Newcastle United in the English First Division (now the Premier League) He spent time with the Miami Sharks, Freedom, and Fort Lauderdale Strikers. In the USISL he had a stint with the New Orleans Riverboat Gamblers. He also spent time with Chattanooga United Football Club. He’s been an Assistant coach at numerous colleges and spent an extended period of time as Head Coach at Sewanee: University of the South 2009-2020.

Pat’s resume also includes being selected to Region III ODP Staff and more. He is also the author of The Odyssey of a Soccer Junkie.

Hosts Eric Vaughter and Greg Deutsch welcome USL all-time shutout leader Evan Newton to the podcast.
Evan is widely considered one of the greatest goalkeepers in USL Championship History. Evan is currently on loan to El Paso Locomotive from Vancouver Whitecaps (MLS). A well traveled veteran of the USL, Newton has had stints in El Paso, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Sacramento, Oklahoma City, Phoenix, and Tampa Bay. Often referred to as "The Quiet Man' of US professional soccer, Mark Dodd had an illustrious 11-year career in both the American Professional Soccer League, and MLS.
Dodd played collegiately at Duke University, where he backstopped his 1986 Blue Devils team to the NCAA National Championship (Duke's first-ever National Championship in any sport), and then won back-to-back APSL Championships with the Colorado Foxes.
Dodd returned to his hometown to become the GK for the MLS Dallas Burn where he led his team to a US Open Cup Championship while being named an MLS All-Star and MLS GK of the Year.
Dodd was capped 15 times for the US Men's National Team during his pro career.
After his playing days, Dodd became a very successful entrepreneur heading up several businesses.

Becky has won 3 national championship and was the 1st female head coach to win an NCAA Division 1 national championship defeating the defending national champion UNC tar heels in 1998 in only the Gators fourth year of existence.
