Scott Jenkins - The Uk's 200 Mile Man
Scott Jenkins is a Welsh male Ultra Runner, motivational speaker and philanthropist. He favours races of 200 Miles or longer and has finished 15th out of the 227 finishers at the Moab 240  in Moab, Utah, behind winner Michael McKnight. Jenkins's finish was the fastest on record for a British finisher. Scott has Raced and Crewed at some of the most challenging Races out there and in this podcast we talk about how he plans and executes his race.  We talk about the importance of a good crew and how to also be that good crew.  There were a few questions I wanted to ask but I also got a few answers I wasn't expecting.  I let the interview happen rather than just going through a list of prepared questions. Keith Russell - Backyard Ultra, Race of Champions
Irishman Keith Russell claimed second place in the gruelling Race of Champions Backyard Masters in Germany. The race began last Saturday morning and participants had to complete a 6.7km lap every hour, running it as fast or as slow as they wanted, while ensuring they were back at the start line on the hour mark to go again. Any runner who failed to finish a lap recorded a DNF (did not finish). In the early hours of this morning, Russell's race came to an end at 89 laps, covering an astonishing 597km in 66 hours, 14 minutes and 22 seconds. Russell started running in 2016 with his daughter Alanna, who had spastic quadriplegia cerebral palsy, and ran the 2017 Dublin marathon, pushing Alanna in a special running chair. The pair raised more than €60,000 for the Meadow's Children's Respite Centre in Navan, but tragically, Alanna passed away six weeks after the marathon.

The Ice Ultra - Cold Weather Racing
Coach John Belton talks about his experience in the Ice Ultra. During the conversation we discuss the Arctic Environment and the hazards hidden by its beauty. We talk more about what can happen during a race like this rather than just this race. Cold weather injuries and strategies for survival also get a mention. What is the Ice ultra? It’s a 230km race split into 5 stages taking in Arctic tundra and frozen lakes all set against a back drop of white topped mountains. The days are short and the course is long; runners should expect long periods running in darkness, following a marked route by head torch, under skies free of light pollution and filled with stars and sightings of aurora. As a self-sufficient race you are responsible for carrying your entire kit, including food, safety equipment and a minimum of 1.5 litres of water which can be re-filled at checkpoints along the stages.  You’ll need some specialist gear to take on the conditions the Arctic Circle can throw at you. Accommodation each night is provided by way of remote huts and teepee tents with open fires for warmth.

Ed McGroarty an Irish International Ultra Runner from Lifford, Co.Donegal. Ed is the Irish 24hr Record holder with a distance of 256.570Km set in Belfast Victoria Park in October 2021 and he also holds the 24hr Indoor Record with a distance of 249.761Km set in Espoo Finland in February 2020.  He also holds the Record for the FKT (Fastest Know Time) for running the length of Ireland starting at Malin Head in Co.Cork and finishing in Malin Head Co.Donegal, a distance of 570Km which he covered in 3days 1 hour and 55 minutes. Ed is a very unique Character and I have know him for quite a few years and have witnessed his journey and progression from Marathon Runner to one of the best ever Irish Ultra Runners.

Dr Sharon Madigan is Head of Performance Nutrition at Sport Ireland and works with the Irish Olympic Team.  She is well-known for her work as a performance nutritionist for the High Performance Boxing team and has worked with young boxers and the international team who have had numerous successes at European, World and Olympic games since 2003. K2 Mountain - Jason Black, Endurance Athlete.
Internationally renowned global endurance athlete and successful high altitude mountaineer Jason Black has spent the last 30 years as a high performance athlete having scaled the world’s highest mountains and raced to the end of the earth.   His accomplishments include summiting Mt Everest and the most technical and dangerous mountain of them all, K2.   The fatality rate on K2 is 25% compared to Everest with 6.5%. The main reasons why K2 is a tougher climb than Everest are the lack of Sherpas, support, fixed ropes and claimable routes. K2 also has more unpredictable weather and more frequency of avalanches. Then there’s the technicality and immediate steepness of the climb and the logistics of the climb and trek. At 8611 meters, it’s the second highest peak in the world, bested only by Everest at 8 848m. 2008 brought on one of the greatest tragedies in mountaineering history when 11 climbers died on K2 in a single day. www.jasonblack.ie Instagram @jasonblack_athlete

10 years ago, the 36 year-old Paula was struggling with a life-threatening health condition, seriously overweight due to a debilitating form of diabetes contracted during pregnancy. She was on a cliff edge, her confidence shot, and the prospect of not being there to watch her kids grow up a genuine concern. “When my youngest was one, so I’m talking around 2011, I realised that I had a serious problem because I was just that heavy, so I decided I’d start walking. And walking didn’t really do anything, I started a bit of swimming, that didn’t work, I started diets and they would make the weight drop a bit but you can’t live with the diets – you have to live normally as well. So then I decided that’s it, I’ll start running, because I did like a running a bit before.” The literal and metaphorical distance Paula has travelled over the past seven years is borderline inconceivable. After all, her beginnings in the sport were humble, in the most extreme sense. “I couldn’t run past two lamp-posts before I was out of breath - I was so bad, I was so out of breath, I was just so out of shape. It took me well over seven or eight months before I could run from 0 to 5k, but the first 5k was actually the hardest.” This is a small part of her story adapted from the Nenagh Guardian. At the time of recording, Caitriona Jennings was quarantining in a Hong Kong hotel in line with travel restrictions imposed because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.  Caitriona had just returned from taking part in the Hoka One One 'Project Carbon X2' event in Arizona. On May 29th 2007, I took part in the Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon with blind adventurer, Mark Pollock.  This race which boasts the highest start line for any race in the world took us almost 2 weeks of trekking to reach the start line.   Then, on the 54th anniversary of the first succesful ascent of Mount Everest we assembled at the Khumbu Icefall above Base Camp to begin our Marathon back to the Sherpa town of Namche Bazar.  This was to be an incredible challenge and in this podcast I share my own experience of how I came to take part in this amazing adventure. Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary reach Everest summit at 11:30 a.m. on May 29, 1953,  Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa of Nepal and Edmund Hillary of New Zealand, become the first explorers to reach the summit of Mount Everest, which at 29,035 feet above sea level is the highest point on earth.

24hr Ultra Running - Eddie Gallen, Irish International Ultra Runner
Eddie Gallen from Belfast but living in Madrid did his first Marathon in Dublin back in 1982.  He followed that with a few more Marathons before taking on his first Ultra Marathon in 1995.  This was a 100Km race in Madrid. In 1998 he discovered the time based 24hr race and in 2007 he made his International Debut when representing Ireland in the IAU 24-hr European Championships in Madrid.  Since then Eddie has gone on to represent Ireland in 8 European & 9 World Championships with the highlight being his Captaincy of Team Ireland when the World Championships were held in his native Belfast. In this Podcast we discuss his journey and his motivation along with the training and mindset that has earned him the name Steady Eddie.

The COVID-19 Pandemic is still having an effect on our day to day routine and nothing is as it was.  There is also an uncertainty of  how long this will continue for and we are told that the best thing we can do is to do nothing and hopefully this will soon come to pass and we can try get back to some normality.   Gyms have closed along with all sporting clubs and activities which makes staying fit that bit more of a challenge.  However, most gyms and / or Personal trainers have set up online classes to help keep their clients and communities motivated and fit during these challenging times.   Worth remembering this when their doors reopen as they will need your support more than ever. By special request I’ll be documenting the training and preparation of Jan Corcoran #jantasticjourney as she prepares to take part in her first 100k Race when she represents Ireland at the Anglo Celtic Plate in Boddington, England on May 16th  2020. Dr. Noel Brick is a Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Psychology at Ulster University and a researcher on attentional focus and self-regulation during endurance activity. His Interests include the role of cognitive strategies and metacognitive processes in the regulation of endurance performance and physical activity.  Noel is also a keen Marathon & Ultra Marathon Runner and his list of races include the Marathon des Sables and the Energia 24 hour race / Irish National Championships in Belfast. Aoife Mundow - Ultra Runner & Irish 24hr Record Holder
Aoife Mundow has gone from strength to strength since first trying an Ultra Trail Race back in late 2018.   Realising that she enjoyed the longer distance and was a natural in the hills she started to take her running a bit more seriously and in 2019 she won six of the ten races that she entered, varying in distance from 50K to 200K.  These wins included a course record in the 127km Wicklow Way Race, winning the Connemara 100 Mile, winning the Ecotrail Wicklow and also winning the 200Km Kerry Way Ultra as featured in previous podcasts.   Most recently Aoife has set a new Women's Irish Record for 24 hrs by covering a distance of 231.376Km in the Athens International Ultramarathon festival, Jan 2019. My guest today is Richard Donovan, who will discuss the background of extreme events he organises such as the North Pole Marathon, Antarctic Ice Marathon and World Marathon Challenge. However, given his diversity, Richard is worthy of an entirely separate podcast to share some of his thoughts on the philosophy of ultrarunning, the direction of the sport and his previous roles as a Director of the International Association of Ultrarunners and Head of UltraRunning Ireland. He has organised the IAU Trail World Championships at ultrarunning, obtaining the first global TV audience in the process, and was also a Race Director of the first Commonwealth Championships at both 100km and trail ultra running. He additionally helped to launch the first Wings for Life World Run and was Race Director of the inaugural Irish event. As if that’s not enough, Richard has run across three continents and won several events such as the Himalayan 100 mile Stage Race and Inca Trail Marathon. Richard has shown himself to be a strong advocate for access to sport for people with disability and a big supporter of Irish athletes attempting to qualify for the Olympics, among others. In this episode I catch up with Irish International Ultra Trail Runner & North Face athlete, Paddy O'Leary.  Paddy was home for the screening of his movie Ag Teacht Abhaile / Coming Home which focuses on the Irish Trail Running Community.  The movie uses his successful attempt at a Fastest Known Time #fkt for the Wicklow Round as a backdrop to the story. We talk about Paddy's transition from a competitive Lacrosse player to Ultra Trail Runner and how he only really discovered his true passion for the Irish trails while living in San Francisco. The Wicklow Round is a long-distance hill running  challenge in the Wicklow Mountains in Ireland.  The route follows a proscribed 100-kilometre circuit of 26 mountains, which must be completed in a fixed order, that total over 6,000 metres (20,000 ft) of elevation; there is some flexibility on route-choices between peaks.  Rounds completed outside of a cut-off time of 24-hours are not generally recorded.  Irish ultra-runners Joe Lalor and Brian Bell are credited with the creation of the Round. www.imra.ie You can follow Paddy on Instagram @poleary87

Eoin Keith was the winner of the 2019 Oman by UTMB 170Km race.  In this podcast he tells us all about his race and includes some tips and strategies for anyone thinking of taking part in future events.  The JBS is an incredibly tough and technical challenge only recommended for extremely experienced adventurers. Participants must be confident in their ability to cover very challenging terrain whilst being completely self-sufficient for a minimum of 10 hours as there are significant distances between the Aid Stations on the Jebel Shams section of the route. Athletes taking on this epic challenge will follow the 130KM route up Jebel Al Akhdar, including the vertical climb out of Balad Sayt, before carrying on along the top of the plateau and following the trail around Jebel Shams, where they will climb to an altitude of almost 3,000m. Runners arriving at the Aid Station at Col Trail Split within the barrier time, the point at which the Jebel Shams section starts, will be evaluated before being allowed to continue with the JBS. Those runners found not to be in a condition to take on the additional section will be re-directed onto the JBA route and will be reclassified into the JBA race. This also applies to runners arriving after the barrier time. With the new qualification criteria for UTMB in Chamonix, runners completing the 130KM or 170KM distances will bypass the lottery and have a guaranteed entry for UTMB 2020. In this episode I speak to 3 competitors in the 2019 Kerry Way Ultra.  The Winner, a Finisher and a Did Not Finish (DNF).  This will give you an idea of what it takes to complete this epic event.  We chat about their individual experiences and how their races unfolded from the night before to the day after. The Kerry Way traverses one of Ireland's most spectacular mountain ranges with magnificent coastal views, lakes, moorlands and lonely glens with a mixture of tarred roads, lanes, bogs and mountain passes underfoot. It is approximately 200km of roads, lanes, trails, paths and hills, running parallel to The famous Ring of Kerry road on the Iveragh Peninsula and is a route through the Old Red Sandstone mountains of Kerry. The Way touches Irish history (old butter roads, famine graves, abandoned villages), archaeology (hilltop burial chambers, standing stones, ogham writing) and folklore (tales of the Fianna warriors and their escapades). Starting and ending in Killarney town, with a maximum race time of 40 hours, this event is open to runners who have completed at least two marathons since in the previous year, one 50 mile event or one 100k event. Paul Martelletti (born 1 August 1979) is a New Zealand marathoner and ultra-marathoner. His notable victories in 2015 included the Greater Manchester Marathon,  Bath Half Marathon, Wokingham Half Marathon and Watford Half Marathon.  In 2014 Martelletti won the Chelmsford Park Marathon and the Windsor Half Marathon.  He also represented Great Britain at the 2014 IAU 100 km World Championships in Doha, Qatar. In 2016, Martelletti claimed victory at the Brighton Half Marathon for the fourth successive year. Other Victories In April 2015, Paul Martelletti ran the quickest ever marathon by someone dressed as a superhero at Sunday’s Virgin Money London Marathon. Initially clocking 2:30:12, Martelletti’s time was later adjusted from gun to chip time meaning he managed his target of breaking 2:30 with 2:29:57. In 2014 he won the UK leg of the inaugural Red Bull Wings for Life race, where he outran a chaser car for 69.37km to place 5th in the global rankings.

In this episode, Anne Jennings from Ireland talks about her experience at the Spartathlon.  Anne is only the 4th Irish Female to ever finish this race which has a drop out rate of over 50%. Female finishers from Ireland: 1.  1998 - Doina Nugent. 30 hours 58 mins 22 secs. 2.  2016.  Bridget Brady. 34 hours 57 mins 13 secs. 3.  2019 - Leanne Rive.  32 hours 55 mins 58 secs. 4.  2019 - Anne Jennings. 35 hours 30 mins 37 secs. SPARTATHLON is a historic ultra-distance foot race that takes place in September of every year in Greece. It is one of the most difficult and satisfying ultra-distance races in the world because of its unique history and background. The Spartathlon revives the footsteps of Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian long distance runner, who in 490 BC, before the battle of Marathon, was sent to Sparta to seek help in the war between the Greeks and the Persians. According to the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, Pheidippides arrived in Sparta the day after his departure from Athens. From 1984 the International Association "Spartathlon" was founded, which since then has continuously organized the race each September. The choice of this month is because that is the time reported by Herodotus for Pheidippides’ run to Sparta.

Caitriona Jennings from Letterkenny, County Donegal is an Irish long distance runner who competed in the marathon at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. A former triathlete who represented Ireland at youth level.  Since moving to Dublin she has trained with  Rathfarnham WSAF and has been coached by Terry McConnon since 2007. In December 2009 became involved with the Marathon Mission squad and in 2010 she won the Dublin Mini-Marathon. She ran her first marathon in Dublin in October 2011. Caitriona achieved the  'A' qualifying standard for the 2012 Olympics with a personal best time of two hours, 36 minutes and 14 seconds at the 2012 Rotterdam Marathon.   Jennings was selected to represent Ireland at the 2012 Summer Olympics in the women's marathon along with Linda Byrne and Ava Hutchinson. It was the first time that three Irish women have competed in the Olympic marathon. In 2019 she finished 3rd in the Comrades with an incredible time of 6:24.12.
