John Amaechi OBE- The Promises of Giants to Fill the Leadership Void

In this episode Michael Costello spends time with the inspirational Psychologist John Amaechi OBE – well admired for making his way from humble beginnings in the north of England to playing in the NBA with teams like Orlando Magic and more recent work on equality and diversity – being bold enough to raise the issues of bias, racism and White Privilege in the workplace & our wider society. The discussion explores John's new book "The Promises of Giant"s and the promises critical to John’s own career in the NBA, in Psychology & his personal development.  The discussion explores the different ways in which discomfort can help us grow as individuals, the lessons learnt from the racism witnessed during the Euros, whether we should we be watching the world cup in Qatar next year (with its questionable human rights record) and how inclusivity  played its role in the success of his former basketball team Orlando Magic. Professor Dr Robert Kaplan (Harvard Business School) Inclusive Strategies for Society & Environment

Professor Dr Robert Kaplan (Harvard Business School) Inclusive Strategies for Society & Environment

Welcome back to Management Today's Workplace Evolution Podcast sponsored by Michael Page - Part of the Page Group! Our first guest for 2021 is Dr Robert S. Kaplan, a Senior Fellow and Marvin Bower Professor of Leadership Development, Emeritus at the Harvard Business School, is co-developer of both activity-based costing (ABC) and the Balanced Scorecard (BSC). Kaplan joined the HBS faculty in 1984 after spending 16 years on the faculty of the business school at Carnegie-Mellon University, where he served as Dean from 1977 to 1983. He now also works as an advisor to the Palladium Group.  Dr Kaplan is a man who made strategy a little simpler for all of us alongside his colleague David Norton with the introduction of the Balanced Score Card. A concept every business leader should be aware of and one that we define and explain at the start of our discussion. Robert has now evolved the score card concept to support organisations in contending with what he sees as every increasing “Societal & environmental Obligations” at a time when the the UK still has serious issues with Covid, child poverty, adult learning, unemployment & digital inequalities. We discussed how business have worked in their community to manage these issues but also the societal pressures on pharmaceutical giants rolling out the vaccine right now  - it might be a good idea to look at past lessons learnt from the HIV and AIDs epidemic. We also explored his beliefs on what organisations and governments will really need to discuss at the “COP” conference coming up the UK this year to tackle climate change and meet Bill Gates’ demands of going Carbon Zero by 2050. Our discussion starts with us discussing the changes Robert has seen during his incredible 35 years at Harvard Business School – before we had over please remember one thing – enjoy the podcast!.... Leroy Logan MBE: Inclusivity, Diversity & An Axe To Grind With Racism

Leroy Logan MBE: Inclusivity, Diversity & An Axe To Grind With Racism

This episode explores the career and journey of the former Met Police Superintendent Leroy Logan who’s life has recently been shared by Director Steve McQueen in the BBC & Amazon Prime Small Axe series (with John Boyega playing Leroy!). Leroy & Business Psychologist Michael Costello draw on the inspirational moments of Leroy’s new book "Closing Ranks: My Life as a Cop" to find ways in which a more inclusive and diverse culture can be created for the benefit of an organisation & society .  The interview covers (sadly) his father’s "savage beating" at the hands of the police in the 1980s as he joined the force & his personal experiences of discrimination and prejudice in the force…testing his own safety but also what Leroy calls “his calling” to change the force from within. Many would have walked away - Michael asks "What stopped him?" The conversation also covers Leroy' experiences with the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, the founding of the Black Police Offices association, and even the tragic death of Damiola Taylor. Black Lives Matter, apologies from British comedians, the Premier league are all explored as well as the state of the current Metropolitan Police force - ending with a powerful and sincere message to Met Police Commander Cressida Dick

In this episode Workplace Evolution Director Michael Costello talks with the incredible Alvin Hall (broadcaster, author and financial guru most famous for his show "Your Money of Your Life") to help us during the lockdown and the many financial demands that have come with the coronavirus.

All the way from New York, Alvin talks with Michael in the UK about his life of poverty as a child, his mistakes (Alvin goes off the rails!?) and lessons learnt, his bounce-back from redundancy and 9/11 and how he achieved financial success in his career.

In an age where so many are promising us financial freedom for a hefty fee, Alvin now just wants to share his knowledge and wisdom with us all –  to get us through this challenging time - including "Knowing Your Financial Nut" and how to keep your clients engaged throughout the crisis. As always, send in your feedback and comments, stay tuned for our next podcast with Formula 1 Driver David Coulthard on Mental Toughness.

Allen Packwood OBE: Winston Churchill's Personality Assessment (Churchill Society & Cambridge University)

Thanks for joining us on this very special VE Day celebratory podcast highlighting the personality and leadership of the late great Winston Churchill. I feel incredibly lucky to have had time to discuss this man’s life with the world leading expert on Churchill - Allen Packwood – director of the International Churchill society and also Director of the Churchill Archive Centre at Cambridge University. Allen granted my wish and completed a personality questionnaire answering as Winston Churchill. No one can of course do this accurately but I think the results might just interest you. Allen and I certainly both had to laugh when we received the personality report describing his personality type stay tuned to find out what is was. We also recognise that Churchill was not perfect, and this is documented elsewhere, it just for this podcast we focused more on his strengths than his weaknesses. In this challenging times I hope that all of you can be  inspired Churchill – his words, his deeds and his accomplishments – but most of all that he knew that if we all played our part in some way, we could over come anything. Enjoy the podcast and happy VE Day!....and listen out for the incredible competition being run by the International Churchill Society!! Helen Sharman OBE: Time & Space on Remote Working & Isolation

Helen Sharman OBE: Time & Space on Remote Working & Isolation

Hi everyone and welcome back to the Workplace Evolution podcast! I trust you are all well and coping with the changes of the lock-down…if you were to have told me four years ago that we would have Donald Trump as President in the US, the UK would be heading out of Europe and we would be in lock-down in 2020 due to a virus I would have said there was more chance of me going in to Space.
Well our guest Helen Sharman, Britain’s first astronaut, actually did that! Helen joins the podcast to help navigate the challenges of remote working – a rising trend in the workplace and one that can come with the of isolation...and you can’t get more remote or isolated than space. We also explore her incredible journey and achievement back in 1991.
Can you imagine the responses you would have got from your loved ones or your colleagues if you told them you were applying to join a team of Russian Cosmonauts to work on MIR Space Station!? She pursued this dream which is a huge testament to Helen’s character – she is a truly inspirational leader that the United Kingdom should be so proud of – it was a pleasure to keep this story alive, and I hope you feel the same way too.

Sir Vince Cable: The Post Coronavirus Environment & Political Leadership

Sir Vince Cable: The Post Coronavirus Environment & Political Leadership

Workplace Evolution Director & Business Psychologist interviews Sir Vince Cable on the topic of the Corona Virus and the future ahead: Sir Vince Cable on the Over 60s: "I accept I'm now well over 70...I'm probably going to be one of the last people to be released from some kind of confinement. I do feel we have been leaning over backwards as a society to protect the interests of the elderly...we have to think about young people...we have had our time...let's focus on the interests of young people" Challenging the NHS system: "A lot of miraculous things are now happening in the NHS...an enormous number of people who were in hospital have suddenly been removed. Why wasn't this happening before? A lot of cutting across boundaries [and] brilliant collaborative working - why didn't this happen before? Why did it take an emergency to get the NHS operating at full efficiency" Rising Sentiment for the NHS: "We need to keep a cool head about it. The care system had been terribly neglected. Decisions were made 5 years ago for charging for social care that were never implemented and as a result we've got this horribly defective system of social care alongside the NHS - and you can't deal with one without the other." Balancing Civil Liberties & the Economy: "We will have to be a lot less precious about some of the finer points of civil liberties...the best safe-guard is that we do have open media" Loathing Donald Trump / the Relationship with the United States: "The populists have been put in their box. The reinstatement of the expert is a good thing. He [Trump] has behaved quite appallingly in this pandemic and made things much worse...one practical consequence is that the United States, who we always used to look to for leadership ever since the second world war has effectively abdicated that role...if the American leadership can't do it, someone else has to do it and step up to the plate"  Universal Credit, Guaranteed Loan Scheme & Food Banks: "The guaranteed loan scheme for businesses isn't working sadly...it is only getting to 4% of companies [and] the banks aren't cooperating...enormous numbers of businesses are going to go under in the next few weeks unless that is made significantly more generous. Universal credit started off with good intentions but it is keeping people in appalling poverty...I see a few improvements but it is not on the scale to prevent mass destitution. There has been a massive increase in the number of people going to food banks and even the food banks do not have enough. That is a gap in the system we need to be plugging urgently." Boris Johnson / Governments 5 Point Plan: "It doesn't show the way forward. What politicians should be doing is pushing for a route map for a strategy for moving forward above all for giving people a sense of hope. His [Boris Johnson] own instincts are optimistic and positive. I would hope that when he gets back to the leadership role he will help us to think more positively rather than a negative frame of mind" The Lib Dems: "We took a battering in 2015. With 11 MPs you can't make a lot of noise....I think there is an appetite for progressive liberal politics and I think it will come back. Now that the Labour Party is under sensible leadership it will actually make it easier because a lot of people wanted to vote for us and liked what we had to say but were terrified of having Mr Corbyn in power."  "The Civil liberties agenda...that will be a very important and touchy issue where I would hope they are doing some original and creative thinking" Photo (attached): Credit Chris Watt www.workplaceevolution.co.uk Twitter: https://twitter.com/workplaceevol LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelcostellooccpsych1

Wayne Hemingway MBE: Corona To End 'Greed is Good' Culture?

Wayne Hemingway MBE: Corona To End 'Greed is Good' Culture?

Welcome to the Workplace Evolution podcast with me Michael Costello – I trust you are all at home safe and healthy right now as you join us in what are difficult times for all of us with the corona virus sweeping through Europe and beyond. This actual podcast was intended to explore the Good Business Festival in Liverpool, coming up in October, lead by the great Wayne Hemingway MBE, which it did, but with uncanny timing as the country comes together and businesses potentially re-evaluate their purpose and societal obligations. This podcast with Wayne really does drive home the fact that being No #1 in the sector right now is not a priority – people are frightened about their health, their loved ones and their income. History will judge many businesses on how they have acted and whose interests they have in mind. Wayne was born in Morecambe, a stones from away from where I am based in Lancaster and has been very much a local hero to many here in the community. He is one of Britains most acclaimed designers who built the globally celebrated Red or Dead label through not just innovation but applying the values he learnt from is community. He has also been an integral part of the re-development and renaissance of seaside towns across the UK - such as Morecambe which we also discuss – and now wants businesses to re-evaluate their contribution to society and the environment.
So, how will business behave post the Corona virus?...and has Corona brought about the end of the “Greed is Good Culture” that many of s grew up with in the 1980s? Perhaps this podcast will tell us more…

Cool Runnings Olympian Devon Harris: Adapting To Change & Unconscious Bias

What an amazing way to start off 2020 - sun, sand, tropical weather and errr...ICE! Such a relaxing, heart warming and inspiring conversation... The year ahead is likely to bring change and challenges in new and different forms for all of us. If you have challenging goals and ambitions you are likely to face ambiguity and the unknown - this can be difficult to contend with.   Our first guest for 2020 - Devon Harris is a 3 time olympian and founding member of the Jamaican bobsleigh team who has had his fair share of change over the years - as well as contending with bias and stereotypes. We didn't shy away from the difficulties he faced in his career, the impact of the Disney film "Cool Runnings" and his views on sport today.  Here are the big questions we explored:   Did the Jamaican bobsleigh team experience Unconscious Bias & did the film Cool Runings help support stereo-types of Jamaica? How did the team combat any stereo types about Jamaica?  What did he learn about the change mind-set, the pursuit of dreams and dealing with his greatest fears?  We discuss clean Russian athletes being at risk of bias as well as the British bobsleigh team belatedly given bronze due other teams cheating   How to manage the expectations of the "Microwave Generation"  who want their dreams now and expect to get it!  If you enjoyed the podcast please share like and share the podcast - we also welcome feedback and any questions you might have for our future guests.   PODCAST NOTES:  Devon Harris Website: https://www.devonharris.com/  The Keep on Pushing Foundation: https://www.devonharris.com/keep-on-pushing-foundation/  The Keep on Pushing Podcast: https://www.devonharris.com/podcasts/  If you enjoyed the podcast please like and share! Does Hard Work Really Pay Off For Our Career & Well-Being? Hans Frankort - Cass Business School Research

Does Hard Work Really Pay Off For Our Career & Well-Being? Hans Frankort - Cass Business School Research

Welcome to episode #11. We know you have all been working hard up until the end of the yeat so sit down and relax.

This podcast explores the research of Hans Frankort and Argyro Avgoustaki to answer whether the hard work really pays off for us in terms of career outcomes and our well-being.  Also - why is it we have this worrying trend of 50% of employees working in their free time to meet work demands? Is the UK lagging behind other countries in terms of competitiveness because of a greater prevalence of overtime and work intensity in Europe? Lastly, what the threats are to our own well-being and also which countries are getting it right? This podcast comes with a warning though – it challenges the old mental models of the workplace which some listeners may find uncomfortable.

Guest Profile:

Hans Frankort is a Senior Lecturer in Strategy at Cass Business School, where he has been on the faculty since 2009. Hans leads strategy and quantitative methods courses across MSc, MBA, and PhD programs, including the International Consulting Week in the full-time MBA. The research has also featured across 200+ media outlets, including The Financial Times, The Guardian, New Scientist, Popular Science, Business Insider UK, Inc., Forbes, Entrepreneur, Capital, Le Monde, Le Figaro, City A.M., and the Daily Mail.

The 4 Day Week...Difficult Questions That Need Answering - With CEO Charlotte Lockhart

The 4 Day Week...Difficult Questions That Need Answering - With CEO Charlotte Lockhart

Welcome to the Workplace Evolution podcast #7! During this episode Michael Costello (Workplace Evolution Director) meets with Charlotte Lockhart - CEO of "4 Day Week Global" a community where all those interested in the 4 Day week can connect, share ideas and help create the movement.  This podcast is a great debate and exploration of an exciting concept…the 4 Day Week. It asks some very serious questions about where the workplace is heading. What would it mean to you if you could... - Balancing shareholder value and the needs of our employees? - Pay for the value people add rather than their time in the office? - What if there was a way to start winning the battle against an ever growing mental health problem in this country? - Not to mention the equality challenges, pressures on family, the ageing population and even the environment The podcast gives some insight in to the challenges of implementing a 4 Day Week as well as whether it is really for everyone. The Legend of Belbin / High Performing Teams / Boris Johnson, J K Rowling & Gordon Ramsey with Jo Keeler

Title: The Legend of Belbin & High Performing Teams with Jo Keeler

In this episode Michael Costello speaks with Jo Keeler from Belbin - the world leading experts on team theory and developing high performing teams.  Jo has almost 20 years experience of working with Belbin Associates advising company's globally on their teamwork challenges.
Jo provides an incredible sense of passion for the topic of teamwork whilst treating it with the seriousness that is deserves.  The episode explores the story of Belbin and how the world famous "Belbin Team Roles" were created (you can see a link to the 9 Team Roles that are evident in high performing teams below as well as the resources available).

The discussion explores individuals from the public eye such as Boris Johnson, Gordon Ramsey and J.K Rowling to identify their Team Role (according to Jo) helping bring the framework to life. Focus is also centred on what key skills leaders need to perfect to develop a high performing team as well as how to drive "Psychological Safety" in teams - a term developed as a result of research by Google ("Project Aristotle").  We explore the topic of organisational culture and team roles in relation to the NHS as well as the usual listener's questions:

Q: Do Belbin Team Roles Always Play Out As They Should (Question from "The Belbinator!")
Q: What are the applications of Belbin?
Q: Is Belbin still as relevant today as it was in the 1970s?
Q: I need help with my football team, what should I do (Charlie Costello, Aged 8)?
