From In-House to Freelancer: 2020 Predictions for the Creative World
Jordan's Daily Email for Photographers: https://jordanpanderson.substack.com Over the last ten years, the creative world has gotten fatter and fatter. You might be on the chopping block at your in-house creative job. How to Prepare for the Worst If you’re in-house, prepare for the worst. The younger/less experienced you are, the more likely you’ll be let go. Have your portfolio and website up to date (Today is May 26, 2020). Keep in contact with colleagues outside your current job Start  creating thought-pieces, and hefty pieces of content to show off your  expertise. Keep them in the Draft folder if you’re uncomfortable posting  while still employed. Build your runway. Hope  this helps! Speaking from lived experience on this one. Went from  freelance to agency to in-house and back again to freelance over the  last 5 years. What a time to be alive.

A Photographer's Guide to Sales
Download the guide: https://gumroad.com/l/VDqUT Meeting a first-time client can be nerve-wracking and exciting all at once. Some clients are price-shoppers, others are truly interested in the value you offer as a photographer. How do you know who is who, and how do we eventually close a deal? YOU are in the driver’s seat of these conversations. You will be asking 80% of the questions and listening five times more than you speak. An adage in sales is whoever spoke the most lost. Like driving in a car, you have your destination, but along the way, you will be reacting to obstacles - but a good driver knows how to proactively avoid these obstacles. Here are some common questions: What do you say when the client can't afford you? What do you say when the client wants a discount? What do you say when the client asks you to do a last-minute project? Hope this helps! And feel free to share this with a photographer in need. How to Deal with Last-Minute Photography Clients
Accommodate if the schedule allows If you have an opening, then I don’t see a problem with booking the gig. However, it’s I find it incredibly disrespectful that they’re calling me last minute There’s a ton of new added stress so the following is going to happen: Charge a Rush-fee Price sensitivity Cobb Value Curve Cash up front. You have no rapport, you have no trust built up. You will screw yourself if you do this wedding without 100% upfront cash. YOU WILL DO NOTHING UNTIL THAT MONEY IS CLEARED AND ON THE WAY TO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT. Your time is valuable If you’re not available, find a trusted freelancer or recommend a friend Be careful when referring to your friend. Good friends don’t send over shitty referrals. I’ve had plenty of folks send me crap referrals with a paragraph-long forewarning about how bad the client is. If they’re that bad, then please don’t send them my way Politely Decline The client is clearly going to be a handful and cause you unnecessary stress. If this is how they treat you during the production process, then how do you expect post-production will go? Do you think they’ll be on time with their notes and sending you the final payment? I Lack the Self-Confidence to Charge More
When is your work good enough? You have dysmorphia when it comes to your creative work. The Client judges on a different scale. Self-Confidence in Pricing Two photographers of the same caliper, produce the same shots. One believes; the other doesn’t. Who will make more money? And who will cry that no one takes them seriously? When we believe we can create tangible results and undergo progress, we gain confidence in our abilities. Pricing to many creatives is a self-confidence issue. If they only believed that they were good enough, then they would charge higher for their work. Creatives have to convince themselves that they are worth it, before ever stepping foot into a client meeting.

Staying Consistent Hurts.
I know it's painful.  Some of the best advice when starting out is - Don't try to do everything at once. When choosing a way to brand and market your business, it helps to choose 1 or 2 methods and stick with it. Earlier this week, I talked about the 5 Ones. Don't try to build a following or presence on EVERY SINGLE PLATFORM. Yes, of course, have an account set up. Maybe add a piece of content or two to fill it out, but you really need to focus on 1-2 marketing methods. This is the painful part - We Creatives flutter to anything new and we try to wiggle out of anything mundane or monotonous. Posting content consistently to one platform for a long time can seem boring. But it doesn't have to be. Drilling down on one mode of attack sharpens your knowledge of the platform, and sharpens your senses on knowing what content will work on that platform. Dare I say, you become an expert. Thanks for reading! Add to your to-do list to become an expert at YouTube or Instagram or TikTok. Whichever you choose, choose wisely, and stay committed.

The Corporate World Have Taught Us The Wrong Lessons
Being yourself is the only way to run your business. Maybe you're like me and you started your creative career in the corporate world. Having a boss, co-workers, and projects that were handed to you. Working on a corporate team, especially if you're the new girl/guy, teaches us that fitting in is always the best policy. Getting along, agreeing with your supervisors, and smiling through the good and bad is the way to go.  When we finally break free from the corporate world, we bring along those social norms. We treat our clients like they're our new supervisor, and what they say goes. Being agreeable is, again, the best policy.  Drop The Baggage Following these corporate norms will chain your business to the Slab of Mediocrity. We have to forget what we learned in the corporate world. Your clients aren't hiring you to agree with them and to go along to get along. They are hiring you for your unique perspective and ability to cut through the bullshit and tell them what's really going on with their business. Honesty is a blunt weapon in the corporate world, but in your creative business, it's your laser cutter. A client has hired you for your expertise, not to be a quasi-employee where you whimper and bow down.  Stop being afraid, to tell the truth. Unlearn corporate niceties and provide some real value to your clients.

How Much is Too Much Content?
You are not on a unique journey.  What you have done is not special.  The path you're on has been walked many times over. So why make content about my expertise? Because someone else will walk this same path - your younger, former self. When we're creating content we have a few choices when selecting a target audience: Aspirational, Foundational, Future Self, and Past Self. Let's go with Past Self. I want your content to be a small seed you plant in the ground. The goal isn't for you to benefit and return to this spot on the path and marvel at how tall the tree. The goal is to be selfless and pay it forward. Evergreen content isn't meant for SEO optimization - it's meant for your former self who once had the same questions you had. So the next time you're struggling to think of some content ideas, ask yourself, "What questions did I have 5 years ago?" How Much Personality Should I Show?
As much as you feel comfortable. The right answer is your answer. Whatever you feel like sharing is the right amount. There is this pressure out there to show off your family, your house, your dog, your photos from that college party where you slammed a kegstand. It really comes from lifestyle influencers which have bled into every aspect of marketing across the board. There is this constant chase to be authentic. What gets lost in translation is they think someone else's definition of authenticity is now their definition of authentic. If you don't feel comfortable showing your audience what your kids look, what their names are, what your favorite cocktail is to make, then that is totally fine. It's completely fine. The shame should only come from you trying to share and be "authentic" according to someone else's definition of authentic. Stop the self-judgment and stop the insecurity. You are in control of what you share with the world. For those who HATE marketing, here’s a short lesson plan: ►►Enroll Now: https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan --- I’m Jordan P. I Reworked My Website (...again)
Has your creative business hit a roadblock? 🚧🚧 ►►SIGN UP HERE: https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan I didn't take my own advice and I completely changed my website after only three months of the last design. Please don't kill me!  But how I look at it is that I'm testing. I've got nothing to lose.  If my site brings in zero leads and I change something and it brings zero leads, then what was the risk? But if I change some things on my site, and I get 1 or 2 or 3 new leads, then it was only upside. Most of our websites don't bring in business, and many of them act like digital resumes. So, what I wanted to create was a place that would help my potential clients. I want them to not regret clicking my link - in fact, I want them to feel grateful that they found such a resourceful safe haven on the internet What is your strategy for your website? --- I’m Jordan P. Barriers For Your Clients
Has your creative business hit a roadblock? - Sign up here: https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan Answer the following questions: What barriers are in your clients' way? Can they contact you? Can they pay you? Can they schedule anything with you? What if they have questions? If you have a client who is in crisis mode and they need your services now, how easy is it for the two of you to meet/chat/correspond about solving that problem? I talked about this in How To Look Like a Big Business - it wasn't merely for optics. Having your contact information listed and a robust contact form built for your clients is essential. When the economy reopens, there is going to be a mad dash to get everything back to normal. Your clients are eventually going to need your services, so it is crucial that you answer those above questions honestly. Don't find yourself playing catchup. https://tinyletter.com/jordanpanderson

Your Favorite Social Media Platform Has Shut Down
Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan  A lot of businesses rely on one main social media platform to drive their business and create awareness around their brand.  For a small business, it's usually the owner creating and distributing the content on a platform that they personally like.  Maybe it's easier to work with or they find it fun. But what if that platform disappeared tomorrow?  We've all had to pivot our creative businesses somehow, so let's play this scenario out.  Here are some questions to consider:  Where else do my clients frequent?  What other types of content could I be creating?  Do I have a platform to call my own (website, blog, email)?  Can I convert one type of content into another (Video into audio)?  Finally, what is one platform you swear you'll never use? (For me in 2015, it was Instagram)  Though this scenario rarely happens - it's key that you start to diversify your marketing output to at least 2 platforms.  You're renting out temporary space on these platforms, so it's crucial to have a contingency plan.

Should You Start an Online Course?
📡🗓️ One-Page Proposal Template LIVE Q&A - https://www.youtube.com/c/Valleyfilms/live Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan I think after reading this you’ll realize it creates a number of opportunities for your personal brand to shine.⠀ ⠀ 1. Connect With Your Audience⠀ What may be surprising with an online course is how deep you’re able to connect with your audience. Most content that we create is seen by less than 10% of your followers and nearly disappears within seconds of it being posted. ⠀ An online course creates a long term, committed relationship between you and your audience.⠀ Think about it - as each student enrolls, you’re able to welcome them, ask if they have any concerns about the course, and guide them through the lesson plan.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 2. Show Off Your Expertise⠀ Having your own online course really begins to solidify your status as an expert or at the very least exuding traces of expertise to the world. ⠀ Perception is Reality.⠀ Acting as the expert and positioning yourself as the teacher and mentor - the dynamic shifts with you and your audience. You are now seen as a valuable resource among your peers and colleagues. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ 3. Generate A New Revenue Stream⠀ We’ve witnessed the world contract and many creative entrepreneurs are facing refunds, cancellations, and postponed projects. Having an online, digital product like an online course could be a saving grace that these small businesses need to stay afloat. ⠀ Over time, your online course will slowly gain traction. After a while, you’ll wake up every morning to a payment confirmation in your inbox.

Is Your Business Replaceable?
I'll be Live this Friday at Noon EST to answer your one-page proposal questions.   📡🗓️ One-Page Proposal LIVE Q&A - https://www.youtube.com/c/Valleyfilms/live Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan The recent oil price plummet got me thinking about commodities. And then I'm always reminded of commodities in the creative business world.  Here's Investopedia's definition of a commodity. "The basic idea is that there is little differentiation between a commodity coming from one producer and the same commodity from another producer." Yeah but that's oil - What about creative goods and services? The democratization of content creation has flooded our world with photos, graphics, and videos. Everyone has a camera! Yay! The once highly regarded digital artist - be it a photographer or videographer - has been reduced to the lowest common denominator...price. Have you ever given someone your hourly rate for a project? Did you secretly hope that you were the lowest hourly rate among your competitor so that you will stand out (and maybe get hired)? When you're competing on price, you have reduced yourself to being a bag of flour or a tanker of crude oil. Nothing special, easily replaceable, and no branding whatsoever. This is my core mission - to try and help creatives from befalling to such a punishment. The work we provide is creative and unique and we shouldn't be subject to a bidding war and race to the bottom. Branding and finding your niche are so, so important to your creative business.  Got a question on how to do that? Email me at jordan@jordanpanderson.com

We are a Company of One: Me, Myself and I
Strategy for Creative Small Businesses: https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan Do you find yourself using "We" and "Us" when you're talking about your solo creative business? I sure as hell am guilty of this - until about two weeks ago.  The idea is that as a small business if we use "we" and "us" and make it seem like we have a team, then maybe our clients will trust that "we" can get the job done. My website buttons would say, "Contact Us" and my About page would describe how "we are" blah blah blah. It's just you and that's ok. You're not fooling anyone. I understand the use of "We" because it does feel like a team effort. There's you the manager, you the creator, and you the owner. You wear different hats. Embrace being a company of one. And start building trust around your expertise, your abilities, and own the fact that when you clients hire your company that they are going to get you and no one else

Features vs. Benefits
Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan People Don't Care About Your Business - Because you’re talking about the wrong things. ⠀ We think that talking about features are important: ⠀ Photoshop⠀ Coding/Responsive SEO Optimized Wordpress⠀ 4K Video 300 Photos But remember- clients may not know what you’re talking about. And it’s not their job to know. What we need to talk about are Benefits - the tangible and intangible results:⠀ Conversions⠀ Reduced Abandoned Cart⠀ Longer time on the website ⠀ Email signups⠀ Higher engagement ⠀ ⠀ Clients don’t care what you do, they care what you do for them.

Don’t Discount Your Services
Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan Discounting proves your prices are BS. It trains your customers to only buy during a sale Offer limited services instead I've received a lot of flash sale emails lately - everyone is lowering their prices or discounting their products. Some I've seen as low as 70%! This may seem like tough times now, but what happens when everything resumes back to "normal"? Discounting Proves to Me That Your Prices are Made Up Putting your services on sale confirms in the client's mind that your services are fungible. Last month over the phone, you seemed really adamant that your prices are a firm $5,000 and that you can't go any lower. I check your site today and see that you're now saying $2,000? What happened? This type of back and forth subconsciously proves that your prices are only as high as your confidence and that your business is a grocery bag in the wind.  Your Clients are learning Bad Habits. Whatever works is my dog's motto. If I can snatch some food off the coffee table, then whatever works. By lowering your prices frantically, you are communicating to your client base that the time to buy is when my prices are at their lowest. "Don't bother signing up at full price, I'll be discounting them next week."  It rewards the cheap, price-shoppers, and creates bitterness among your good clients. If you're going to lower your price, then lower your offering. This is not a discount and shouldn't be framed as a discount. This is a fair exchange of value between you and your client. If your client wants to pay 60% of the full price, then create a solution that offers 60% of the value. There's nothing wrong with accomodating your clients. There is value in a long-term client relationship.  The key is that you are completely open and honest about expectations. Many people have caught on to this lately in the form of DIY Kits. You're saying, "We won't build it for you, but here's a way we can help."  Great video from The Futur on Discounting - https://youtu.be/UNrd-XtaC28?t=85

Why Do Wedding Photographers Say, "Investment"?
Strategy for Creative Small Businesses - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan - To shift the mindsets of their clients - It’s used on something that cost a lot of money - It moves photographers from Vendor to Expert status Wedding photographers have collectively hypnotized wedding couples into believing that their photography services are extremely valuable. Whether you like it or not, they are able to charge thousands of dollars for a service that clients are more than happy to pay for. What’s the logic and what can we learn from their tactics? 1. Ease the Price-Shopper’s Mind Wedding couples aren’t enterprises, so their budgets are going to be limited and their due diligence won’t be as thorough. Naturally, some couples are going to be price-shoppers — those that base the majority of their decisions on price. By shifting the language on a photographer’s website from “Packages” to “Investment” couples are able to imagine their money going towards something valuable. It justifies the large amount of money that’ll be exchanged because now this couple is acting as a sage financial planner. I would argue that this takes advantage of couples and hypnotizes them into believing that making a fancy investment is far wiser than purchasing a service package. Nonetheless, the lesson stands — get your clients out of price-shopping mode. 2. Get Out of the “Vendor” Category Fast Another achievement of wedding photographers is that they’ve been able to articulate themselves out of the vendor status and into the expert or artist status. You pay for a vendor’s time by the hour, but you’ll INVEST in the artist’s precious time. As a former wedding videographer (and perhaps this is where my bittersweet respect arises from), I had a hell of a time trying to get out of vendor category. Even on the day of the wedding, the videographer was always given 2nd or 3rd priority over the photographer. But this made sense from a sunk cost perspective — couples “invested” not only more money, but more hope and expectations into the photographer. I was probably getting paid a third the photographer’s rate and was seen as an accessory rather than essential. The challenge of using “investment” for many other service industries is overcoming the vendor status aka being a commodity. The banquet hall, catering company, and the live band would struggle to call their services investments. It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue when I think about investing in Stella Artois and a perfect rendition of “Love Shack” (although the return seems pretty high). But there’s nothing to distinguish one bartender from handing you a beer from the other. Photographers have been able to distinguish themselves as worthy investments even though you could argue that photos in 2020 are as commoditizes as they come. I’m not the biggest fan of the word “investment” because I believe it’s misleading, but photographers have done something that is applicable to all creative small businesses: demonstrate and communicate their value to would-be clients. Here’s what FroKnowsPhoto has to say: https://youtu.be/DvLD_OTbtJM?t=812

Getting Your Client's Priorities Straight
Watch the video here: https://youtu.be/6BKWQr5Jho8 Towards the end of the strategy sessions I have with my clients, we go into this final exercise call Goal Prioritization. Fancy way of saying, "We need to prioritize what you're going to do in your business." We break these down into 4 key components: Revenue Awareness (Marketing) Delight, and Efficiency The exercise starts with revenue because let's be honest - it's everything to a small business. In each section, we spend about 5 minutes a piece listing out all the possible options and ideas. Move fast, edit later. Next, once those 5 minutes are up, together the client and I will go through each idea item and rank them on doability, desirability and time to implement. We rank these because, sure, there are many great ideas out there but if the client doesn't want to do them, then there's no point trying to force them into action. We assess the time to implement each top idea into Less than 30 Days, Less than 60 Days and Less than 90 Days. If it's an idea that is doable, the client wants to do it, and it can be done within 30 days then that's a top idea. Go all-in on those short-term, obtainable ideas to get some early points on the board.

You Lose. They Win. And it’s a Beautiful thing...
Read my daily email about business and marketing strategy - https://geni.us/tiny-letter-jordan Tim Ferriss talks about the Lose-Win Guarantee - the key to selling anything to anyone. The classic money-back guarantee is a given and doesn’t spark any interest with your customers. “The New Rich aims to make it profitable for the customer even if the product fails. Lose-win guarantees not only remove risk for the consumer but put the company at financial risk.” - The 4-Hour Work Week I’ve been on the buying end many times where the guarantee offered sealed the deal. I recently bought Peak Design’s travel backpack BECAUSE of their Lifetime guarantee. And then I bought their pouches, and their camera cubes, and their shoulder straps… When I was the cinematographer at Legion Athletics, they had a killer guarantee: We don’t play these games because we don’t have to, the quality of our products makes it unnecessary. If you order any of our supplements for the first time and don’t like it, you can keep it. Just notify us and we’ll give you a full refund on the spot. No complicated forms and no return necessary. “Make your customer base an exclusive club, and treat the members well once they’ve been accepted.” --- To Learn More About Personal Branding, Visit https://www.jordanpanderson.com/personalbranding

How to Hire an In-House Video Shooter/Editor
The main reason most companies hire in-house shooter/editors is because they need the content and they need it now. Hiring an outside video production house means emails, proposals, meetings, contracts, revisions, reshooting and re-edits. Most companies need a quick and easy video done within a few hours and ready to publish ASAP.

Why It's Time to Prioritize Your Target Audience
The definition’s in the name. It’s the audience or people you’re trying to target. A target audience can be broken down in infinite ways whether it’s age, geography, gender, education, income, interests. The best businesses know their target audience in and out. They create “marketing personas” or personalities to embody the ideal member of that target audience.

Start with Your Client, Not Your Product
In many creative firms, they start by creating their main product - let’s use video production for example. They start with the statement that they produce this product: video. They will understand the cost of that video, and based on that will price the video. Once the pricing formula has been created, the creative firm will then find a client to sell that video. This leads us into the concept of “cost-based” pricing. Visit http://jordanpanderson.com/

3 Tips to an Effective Strategy Meeting
1. ASK “WHY?” 5 TIMES Many clients when you sit down with them have a great sense of the in’s and out’s of their business. Problems arise with clients and they will seek out a creative firm- perhaps it’s a marketing issue or positioning issue or an even deeper issue that the client can’t articulate. Usually, the client will seek out the creative firm that specializes in what they believe to be the solution. “We need a new website!” (Google search for Web Design firm). “We need a new landing page video!” (Google search for Video Production firm). For the sake of example, a client has recently booked an initial meeting with your firm and they present their problem. Then, they proceed to self-diagnose: “We aren’t attracting enough views to the website because it’s boring and we need YOU to make us a landing page video,” the Client says. What most firms will respond goes something like this: “Yes, I see what you mean. We too think a new video will do just the trick. Let’s start planning the video.” Rather than letting the patient self-diagnose and tell you what prescription they’d like, instead, begin to ask the first “Why?” question. “Perhaps you’re right about a landing page video. Why do you believe a new landing page video will attract more views to your website?” The Client answers with a very logical answer. Ask “Why?” to that logical answer. Keep asking “Why?” The more “Why?” questions you ask, the deeper the issue goes thus revealing the true nature of the problem. Learn to ask better questions that get to the heart of the real issue. Only from there, can you truly help your client. 2. DON’T INTERRUPT THE CLIENT This second tip isn’t so much about manners but more so about what it reveals about how you feel about the client. When the client speaks, you listen. You continue to ask penetrating questions about their business, but after that, shut up and listen. In conversation, half of the time, we listen to the other person and the other half, we think about what we’re going to say next. Many of us only think about what we want to say next. When you’re speaking with the client, especially for the first time, you want to be the best listener possible. Interrupting the client shows that 1) you’re not listening to what they have to say and 2) that you lack patience. We are here to serve the client. Develop that serving mentality. We should be making the client feel listened to, appreciated, and understood. It is a rare occasion for business owners to feel this from another firm. Your client relationships should be associated with good feelings and a sense of appreciation. These good vibes will lead to your clients actually wanting to engage with your firm more and more- instead of avoiding you. 3. REMOVE YOUR BIAS We briefly mentioned bias in Tip #1 by letting the client self-diagnose themselves into your wheelhouse. As a filmmaker, yes video production is my specialty, but it’s unfair to force my preferences onto the client. The appropriate course of action is to honestly understand a client’s problem and try to help them solve it. If a client doesn’t truly need your services, then it’s more beneficial to your firm that you recommend the actual solution. Nothing can jeopardize your firm’s reputation more than taking on a client to give them the wrong solution. We are not vacuum salesmen. Everyone does not need a vacuum. This is what separates serving from selling. We are not selling the client anything. We are here to help them. Sometimes you have to say in the initial meeting that your firm may not be the best firm for this problem, but would be happy to give some recommendations. Your clients will respect the fact that you haven’t take advantage of them, and this third tip will reward your firm many times over in reputation and client relations.

5 Marketing Strategies Every DC Restaurant Should Use (And You Don’t Want to Miss #5)
1. INSTAGRAM INFLUENCERS Influencers hit the mainstream in early 2018 and it has become a go-to marketing practice for brands in every industry. Any unboxing video, any travel video you’ve seen, any tech review video — that’s influencer marketing. Restaurants aren’t the exception and in fact, they’re ripe for this marketing strategy. An instagram influencer, or simply an influencer is a personal brand or account who usually has a large and highly engaged audience. For a price, that influencer can endorse a restaurant for their audience to check out. These endorsements could be posts, Instagram Stories, tagging, collaborative postings, or even a written blog post. Much like a celebrity endorsement of the 90s, it’s a “get what you pay for” business model. The more followers an influencer has, the higher their day rate will be. Some accounts are small enough, where a comped meal will do the trick- others will want possibly hundreds of dollars. So based on the marketing budget, it might be smarter to hire 20 mid-size influencers then to hire 2–3 big accounts. I CAN’T STRESS HOW EFFECTIVE INFLUENCERS ARE IN 2019. WHAT TO DO: Go on Instagram, Find food bloggers in your space (#DCFood, #FoodBlogger, #DCFoodBlogger) Direct message their account, or email them Invite them to visit your restaurant Negotiate the terms (Content Deliverables, payment, etc.) Repeat this process to your heart’s (or budget’s) desire 2. YELP/GOOGLE MAPS Yelp and Google Maps are essential apps on everyone’s phone. Some use one more than the other but both are great ways for hungry customers to find your restaurant. Obviously, the reviews are out of the restaurant’s control but there are certain key features that restaurant owners should consider. The first major step on these apps is to populate your restaurant’s profile with clear, understandable photos. Notice I didn’t say pretty or beautiful photos. (See Strategy #4). So many make-or-break moments happen when a customer can’t read the menu, clearly see the restaurant’s atmosphere, or only see a few decent photos of the food. Clearly show or list your menu items on these apps. And if you do link to the restaurant’s website, it had better be simple and mobile-friendly. In this discovery process, customers aren’t looking for the prettiest restaurant, they need the facts first. Once they know what the restaurant serves THEN they begin weighing the fluff and frills. WHAT TO DO: Create Yelp and Google Map Accounts (How To) Fully and completely fill out the details of your profiles Take some clear, legible photos your menu, restaurant, and food Get really detailed with the metadata (Food Genre, Reservation Process, Directions, Descriptions, Pricing). The more specific the better. Continue to update these profiles regularly. 3. PHOTO CONTENT Food should not only taste good but it should look good. And not only should it look good, but it should look good in a photograph. Take photos of your dishes as they’re finish plating, while they’re in the prep phase, while they’re on the grill. Shoot photos of every stage of your dishes! Hiring a professional photographer is the next logical step. Chefs may know how to plate it properly but lighting and editing the photo may not come as natural. Start a relationship with one or twenty photographers around town. Make it worth their while — pay them fairly, comp their meal. Don’t promise them “exposure”. CONTENT CREATORS CAN’T PAY THE BILLS WITH “EXPOSURE” AND “OPPORTUNITIES”. WHAT TO DO: Take a bazillion photos of every dish on the menu Understand the hashtag game on Instagram. Start relationships with local photographers Take a bazillion photos of the food. 4. FACEBOOK/INSTAGRAM PAID ADS So this may not come as natural as photography or setting up a Yelp account, but this can be wildly effective. When people talk about paid-for Facebook Ads, they often think of the “Boost Post” blue button that many business accounts are used to seeing- There is

Lighting both the subject and background will result in harsh shadows on the background and an overexposed subject.

Troy Meekhof- Is Film School Still Worth It?
Troy and I discuss the merits of film school and whether kids in 2017 and beyond should even consider film school. Most of us young filmmakers look to Casey Neistat more than Steven Spielberg. So why even go to film school? Why not just study tutorials on YouTube and save yourself the student debt? Troy makes a great point that film school has been mostly about making connections. Networking on steroids. Your classmates are the future filmmakers of the world (and the future people that could potentially hire you for their next movie.) My Thoughts on Podcasting and Using Instagram DM
Good morning! On my way to work, I unload a few thoughts on podcasting and using Instagram Direct Message.  Podcasting is going to gain even more popularity thanks to Google Home and Alexa. Consuming a podcast is MUCH more convenient than watching a video. It's also good to diversify your content output. If you play on only one platform, you will live and die on that one platform (*ahem VINE).  Instagram DM is the hot and fresh take on email. It's the Email account of 2017. I've been able to reach the Big Boys of the Youtube world by simply sending them a DM. We aren't all used to checking our DM so when we actually get a DM, it grabs your attention. Granted, we are going to ruin the DM over the next 12 months which why you need to take advantage of the tool now.  It's going down in the DM.  --- --- My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/vlogkit --- ► Subscribe to My Channel Here: http://bit.ly/jpa_youtube --- WEBSITE- http://bit.ly/jordanpa INSTAGRAM- http://bit.ly/jpa_instagram FACEBOOK- http://bit.ly/jpa_facebook SNAPCHAT- http://bit.ly/jpa_snapchat PODCAST- http://bit.ly/jpa_podcast Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/jordankit Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/jordankit RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/jordankit iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/jordankit Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/jordankit ►►New to the Vlog? -- How to Start A Production Company- http://bit.ly/videocompany My Life Story (sort of)- http://bit.ly/jpa_mylife I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. Cooper Films: Breaking Down Behind-the-Scenes
Morgan Cooper joins us to break down the reasoning behind his Behind-the-Scenes. Cooper Films: https://www.youtube.com/user/CooperFilmskc Behind-the-scenes is oftentimes a great way to recount your experience on set. Morgan uses it as "game-film" and goes back to study the pros and cons. While directing/DP-ing, you rarely have time to sit down, settle, and really observe what's happening on set. Shooting BTS is an easy way to take a look back once the dust has settled. Practical BTS Advice: Start simple. Strap GoPros to the crews' head and start recording. Being A Production Assistant (PA)- Part 2
PART 1- http://bit.ly/2mmu1g2 My Camera Gear- http://geni.us/jordankit 2 Major questions have arisen from Part 1 and I wanted to answer them for everyone instead of just a select few. 1. How to get a PA Job? 0:56 2. What about a Driver's License? 4:20 --- Getting a PA job is as hard as any job search. The first question is "Where do I start?" You can start on job sites, craigslist or production staffing websites. DISCLAIMER: BE VERY CAREFUL ON CRAIGSLIST. EXTREME CAUTION!! Reach out to production houses, filmmakers and videographers about their company. BUT DO NOT start the email off by asking for a job. "Hi, I'm looking to see if you have any openings." [DELETE] Offer that company something of value. What can you bring to the table? --- Driver's License It's a catch-22. You need one. Should that discourage you? Hell No! The Solution to DSLR Bullsh*t
The Awesome team at Logger's Lunchbox sent us the RNG 3.2 to test out for the week. This thing is a BEAST! The Logger's Lunchbox was concieved to solve the problems that DSLR video was notorious for: unprofessional audio, lack of power, and a lack of space for accessories. The LL RNG 3.2 comes in at 9lbs of stainless steel. It's sturdy on the shoulder and well-balanced. It comes with an articulating hand grip for better support. Take a listen for the audio test as it compares to the Tascam DR-60D. THE BEST 4K DRONES OF 2017
What's my favorite drone? DJI Mavic Pro: http://amzn.to/2oaVClg DJI Phantom 4 Pro: http://amzn.to/2oaZvX4 DJI Matrice 600: http://amzn.to/2oNAOkX --- DJI Mavic Pro - http://amzn.to/2oaVClg This is a small yet powerful drone. It shoots 4K and could fit in your back pocket...? It's not "the best" image quality but it is competive and could pass off as professional if graded properly. I would recommend this drone for anyone starting out with drones (like myself). It's low-key and the most user-friendly. Price: $999 DJI Phantom 4 Pro - http://amzn.to/2oaZvX4 A professional grade drone that is perfect for shoots ranging from weddings to small corporate videos. 4K video at 60fps. The coolest feature on this puppy is ACtiveTrack where the drone selects a target and automatically flies to follow the target. IN-SANE! A significant bump-up in image quality compared to the Mavic and still won't break the bank...too much. Price: $1499 DJI Matrice 600 - http://amzn.to/2oNAOkX Holy fuuuuuuuu...This thing is a BEAST! Not for the faint of heart, this hexacopter has a camera payload of 35lbs. Slap on your RED Dragon and off you go. So cleary, this is for professional shoots, large corporate and cinema. This drone is not for the casual user. Get a pilot's license or hire a professional drone pilot for this bad boy. Which Social Media Platform is Right For YOU?
My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/vlogkit You're trying to grow your brand- which social channel will lead to success? 1) Don't Discriminate Try all of the social media channels before making that final judgment. Don't knock it until you try it. What seems dumb or only for the teenagers might actually be the launch pad for your business or brand. 2) Become An Expert Not only should you try these platforms out but you should become somewhat of an expert in these platforms. Know how to upload Instagram stories, know how to advertise on Facebook, learn what a geofilter is. Only then can you say that this platform isn't right for your company. 3) Understand the Workflow When uploading content to this platform, does it match your workflow? Are there too many barriers to using the platform? Find this out. 4) Don't Use Followers/Subscribers/Likes as Metrics (At First) You cannot decide platforms based on vanity metrics. Having a month-old YouTube channel with only 10 subscribers DOES NOT mean that YouTube sucks. Focus on the vanity later. How To Start A Video Production Company
You've convinced yourself to start your production company! Now what...? My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit 1. Figure out the Company's Goal/Mission This is the foundation of the company. A company's mission will help lay out the game plan and strategy to running the production company. With formulating the mission, one has to figure out the "Edge" or "Secret Sauce" of the company? What is the differentiating factor that makes the company stand out? Wedding Videos only on iPhones? Cinematic Kung-Fu corporate training videos? Vlogging? 2. Branding- The Story of the Company The mission is laid out now it's time to figure out what story, the company will convey to the World. This includes the name, logo, color scheme, style, tone, mood, and "personality". This all will take time and will have a lengthy evolution period but it's is VITAL to remain CONSISTENT. YOUR BRAND (early on) NEEDS TO BE CONSISTENT. 3. Get to WORK! The Mission, the strategy, and the branding is ready to go! Lock 'n' Load! Get Rid of your DSLR
The DSLR Revolution has come and gone. My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit Now the Mirrorless and Prosumer-Cinema cameras are dominating the videomaking world. It's time to put the DSLR on the shelf for good. Image Quality The Dreaded Question- "What Camera did you use to shoot that?" Everyone hates this question, but it's valid when it's coming from a cheap DSLR-user. How can you blame them? They're looking at beautiful images on YouTube in 4K! Speaking of 4K; DSLRs have put that on hold indefinitely. 4K six months wasn't the top priority, but now it is a must-have. 4K provides so many options for the image. The DSLR world has said that they're working on it but that doesn't appear to be the case. Performance DSLRs handle well in the hands; they're beefy and won't slip out. There's just one thing- this is for photographers. Filmmakers have to trick it out and spend loads of cash to make the DSLR a stable piece of equipment. Cinema prosumer cameras offer handles and grips suited for run-n-gun shooting. Battery life wasn't cut out to last very long for video mode. Photos are quick and use minimal power. 1200 shots on a single battery seems reasonable, but 90 minutes for video doesn't cut it. Purpose The DSLR was meant for photography. Video mode was an afterthought that was marketable. Period. DSLRs were not meant for the sole purpose of filmmaking. ---- My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/jordankit Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/jordankit RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/jordankit iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/jordankit Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/jordankit

Avoiding Bad Clients
It's an amazing feeling when a potential clients knocks on your door for their next video project. Here are some things to keep in mind: -Establish the budget or budget range early on- Some clients don't have a grasp on what actually goes into making a high produciton value video. They make think it cost X but really it cost 5X. Establish early on what their budget range is. This will help you understand what kind of project you can pull off. -Build Trust with your Client Not the snap of a finger, but when there's a mutual trust between you and your client. They trust you to make the best creative decisions and you trust them to pay you for your services. -Vet your Clients- Much the same way they are vetting you, YOU should vet them. Figure out what kind of client they are. Ask them about their previous vendors or companies that they have worked with. Are they rude? Do they pay on time? Does the Client know what they want in with this video? There is such thing as a Bad Client, and you need to drop them as soon as possible! --- Send us Vlog Suggesstions! The BEST Gimbal for DSLRs
The DJI Ronin-M has to be one of the best DSLR gimbals on the market. DJI Ronin-M: http://amzn.to/2mvA7Lv It's an easy setup and the controls are very intuitive. The first setup with the Ronin-M took around 20-30 minutes which is expected with any new stabilizer. The key to balance is finding the points where the gimbal stays in one place as opposes to re-balancing upright. Similar to a Steadicam, it takes patience and finesse to find the balance. However, once you find that point, the Ronin-M takes it from there. No seriously. This gimbal is surprisingly lightweight and a full day's shot is not out of the question. A Video Production Company: The First 100 Days
Your video production company has started so now it's time to start earning revenue. My Gear- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D --- Cash flow is your company's oxygen; it keeps you in the game. 1. Build A Portfolio? First, they don't want to take the risk on your ass who has nothing to show for. You are going to need a portfolio or demo reel. Don't have one? Start filming projects as soon as possible. Shoot fake commercials, do free gigs until you have a portfolio that you can show clients. 2. Start with Family and Friends They are going to be the first people that hire you. Start with them and see if they can lead you to the next client. They will always have connections. 3. Free work, Spec work, Reduced-Rate This is the risky part of the first 100 days but it may be the thing to get a project started. It shows off your capabilities and pads your resume. ***Disclaimer: Doing FREE work can devalue your services.*** Do the free projects or cheap projects for as little time as possible. They record circular video that downloads to the Snapchat app. Share them on Snapchat or export them to edit them on Adobe Premiere or Final Cut Pro. These are a seamless way to capture and share the moments without whipping out your phone. As a vlogger, I can truly appreciate the inconspicuous nature of these glasses allowing me to capture a more authentic experience.

How To Buy A RED EPIC-W 8K
--- ► Subscribe to My Channel Here: http://bit.ly/2lZYHDP Some big things have come out in the camera world: RED EPIC-W and the Movi PRO. Would or should you buy something that expensive? How can you buy a RED EPIC-W camera package that costs $75,000+? Option 1) Cash money. Option 2) Borrow/Financing Options You'll need a down payment, factor in the interest rate, and calculate if you can make the monthly payments. A way to pay off that monthly payment is to rent out the gear to other filmmakers. A RED EPIC-W with the 8K sensor could easily rent for $600/day which could be your monthly payment! Having a professional cinema package could also spice up your Cinematography CV because now you are a Cinematographer/RED Camera Owner. Producers can hire just you and you bring along your gear. (The whole package, so to speak.) But what happens when you can't rent out your camera? You're basically staring at $75,000 worth of metal and plastic sitting on your desk. That can get scary if no one calls in. You have to weigh the benefits and risks of owning a RED Camera or any valuable piece of film equipment. What is your experience with big filmmaking purchases? Was it worth it? Did you get screwed over? I would love to hear your stories. --- WEBSITE- http://jordanpanderson.com INSTAGRAM- http://instagram.com/jordanpanderson FACEBOOK- http://facebook.com/jordanpandersonfilm TWITTER- http://twitter.com/jordanpanderson SNAPCHAT- http://snapchat.com/add/valley_films My Gear- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D New to the Vlog? -- How to Start A Production Company- https://goo.gl/OA6MKq My Life Story (sort of)- https://goo.gl/U5b2Ja I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. Why Start A Video Production Company?
Starting a video production company can seem like a huge endeavor. My Gear- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Having the motivation and a clear sense of its importance can help ensure a launch to success. 1. Be Your Own Boss. It’s time that you start blazing your own trail. Everything in life has been predetermined for you. It’s always been safe. Starting a production company is a way to lead your pack. Take the risk of being an entrepreneur. I have always hated the “corporate ladder” of filmmaking. You have to start as a PA and work your way up to 1st Assistant, get to know the Execs and (maybe) you’ll get to be the Director. 2. Get Legit! Almost immediately, starting a production company gives off a certain “legitness”. You’ve now taken your filmmaking from Mikey Peterson Productions into…  Kick-Ass CineProductions (Trademark Pending). Now you won’t have much to show for BUT this will get your foot in the door for your first few gigs. You are a professional business, doing professional work, under a professional company name. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? 3. You Have the Tools All of those Christmases and birthdays have finally added up into a semi-pro stockpile of filmmaking equipment. It might not be a RED Epic but it’s epic enough to get the job done. Put those tools to some good use, and start to see a return on your investment.  Now get out there! --- ► Subscribe to My Channel Here: http://bit.ly/2lZYHDP --- WEBSITE- http://jordanpanderson.com INSTAGRAM- http://instagram.com/jordanpanderson FACEBOOK- http://facebook.com/jordanpandersonfilm SNAPCHAT- http://snapchat.com/add/valley_films Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D New to the Vlog? -- How to Start A Production Company- https://goo.gl/OA6MKq My Life Story (sort of)- https://goo.gl/U5b2Ja I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. My Thoughts on Overnight Success
Let's talk about career paths as a filmmaker. We need to wake up from this dream of becoming an "overnight success." We fall into this mindset that we can become a successful overnight. We're making that one video that will catapult us into the big leagues. I'm 23 year olds and I have so far so go in this Life. Life is marathon. Your career is a marathon. What can we do in the now if life is so long? Remain Consistent. Be consistent in your growth. Maintain a consistent trajectory forward at improving yourself. Never look back and think that it's okay to sit back because "I've already reached my goal, I've already won the awards." If you can't handle the low points of filmmaking then it might be time to head down a new path. Steal Like An Artist
"Good artists copy, great artists steal." -Pablo Picasso Stealing is apart of the artistic process. It's how we develop our own style and reach our full potential as artist. But I thought stealing was bad?! You're advocating stealing, Jordan? No. No. No! Stealing in the sense of remixing, recutting, flipping, and inverting the work of someone else. But don't take it from just one person- Steal from Everything in Life! It's out there for the taking. What is inspiration at its core? Inspiration is observing the work of others and adopting what rings true to you. Whether it's the Mona Lisa or a TED Talk, we are inspired by many different things. We are walking, breathing lineages of art that spans to the original cave paintings. You are a theft. You are an Artist. Happy Stealing! Find us on Beme! How to Use A Monopod (For Video)
Manfrotto Monopod - http://amzn.to/2lvIuDd My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit Move over Tripods, the new kid on the block has got you beat! Well- in some ways. The Monopod offers a variety of shots and can out-maneuver a tripod any day. It’s best to use the Monopod when you lack two things: Space and Time. A big tripod can encumber you in tight spaces and usually takes 5-15 seconds to set up. For live events, such as weddings, every second matters, so it’s critical to not miss The Shot. The Monopod is fast and easy. Boom! You’re set up and ready to go! You can’t go wrong with Manfrotto. They have very smooth fluid heads and a very forgiving warranty. However, if brand isn’t what you’re after then I highly recommend that you find a monopod with base-feet. The Photographer’s Monopod only has a rubber stub on the bottom. What the base-feet offer is a the ability to steady your shot even further as well as pull off a few tricks (scroll down for tricks). For my monopod, I have modified it a bit and added a fluid head. Getting it separately allows me to remove the fluid head and screw it onto the slider. TIP #247- PLAN YOUR SHOTS BEFORE YOU PRESS RECORD.
State of The Valley (Films)
Getting pumpoed for this episode. We are 1 1/2 years into Valley Films and it's been going great! Valley Films is raising the bar and always striving for progress. The VF Blog has been going strong with our 2 new writers. Shoutout to Nicole and Tony! Sailing alone at VF. It's scary yet satisfying. ------- Where do I want to go with this? I want to be a Cinematographer. Cinematography hits me on a profound level. I know that filmmaking is a long term goal. You have to play it like a marathon, not a sprint!. Most dudes don't hit their prime until they're 40! I'm 22!! I love Valley Films and I want to keep it going strong. If I were to move away, I will still rep the VF brand wherever I go. I don't see my career path as linear, nor do I see anyone's. You ping left, ping right, ups, downs, pitfalls. You name it! REMEMBER: The Moment that you want to be a Filmmaker, you are a Filmmaker. The Sony A7s Review
The Sony A7s: http://amzn.to/2mn3fnA My Camera Gear- http://bit.ly/jordankit It finally happened: We got our hands on the Sony A7s mirrorless camera. After blogging about this camera for about 6 months, it was about time that we got to demo Sony's front-runner in the mirrorless uprising. A compact body and able to output a 4K signal, this camera seems to be a filmmaker's dream come true for under $3K. 1. Body/Construction This camera is quite small in the hands. I will give a warning to big guys and Canon 5D users- it's puny in the hands. The overall size is about the size of an iPhone 6. But some will find this as a relief if they often have a hurt back from using large camcorders all day. I'm not one of those people. Coming from a Canon 70D, I take comfort in being able to manhandle my camera without fear of breaking or slipping out of my hands. Buttons and dialed are top notch. I don't see these ever wearing out. They lack the plastic-y cheap feel that Canon dials fall victim to. The body is a mostly metal with a rubberized handgrip. The battery and SD card latches aren't remarkable but they don't feel cheap. My only complaint, and the complaint of many filmmakers: the Record button. It's flush against the rightside the of the camera where your index and thumb meet. I oftentimes couldn't do a no-look recording and would have to crane my head to the side to try and find the tiny button. 2. Battery Not as terrible as our Vlog #16 makes them out to be but these batteries aren't the ones you're looking for. I used to work with a Sony a37 and the A7s uses the same baby batteries. These batteries just lack the robustness and longevity of camcorder batteries. I know this is an obvious statement but if I'm losing one battery per hour, then there's a problem. If I were to shoot a film with the A7s then I would consider a battery grip, external power bricks, or at least 5 batteries and chargers for the day. --- ►► Subscribe to My Channel Here: http://bit.ly/2lZYHDP --- Website- http://jordanpanderson.com Instagram- http://instagram.com/jordanpanderson Facebook- http://facebook.com/jordanpandersonfilm Snapchat- http://snapchat.com/add/valley_films Canon 70D- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Canon 10-18mm- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D RODE VideoMic Pro- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D iPhone 6- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D Adobe Premiere Pro CC- http://bit.ly/2mw6R4D ►►New to the Vlog? -- How to Start A Production Company- https://goo.gl/OA6MKq My Life Story (sort of)- https://goo.gl/U5b2Ja I can remember picking up my family's video camera as a teenager and being enthralled that I could make an impact in someone's life. YouTube vs. Facebook
The Valley Films Vlog had a bit of a facelift with this one. We are kicking this show into high gear. New music, new logos, same solid content for our filmmakers out there. Thank you everyone who has supported Valley Films, we owe you one! Which video platform is right for filmmakers? There are several things to consider: content, target audience, context. YouTube- The Obvious Choice Vimeo- The Professional Wistia- No BS Video Player for Business The Facebook- It's the Winner! Facebook video's autoplay ability has viewers stopping their newsfeeds and getting drawn into the video. It's dominating the scene.
