This reunion with one of my oldest friends (since High School) and a pioneer within the advertising world, I get to interview the multi-award winning and talented Lizette Williams!

Lizette Williams is a leading marketing and advertising executive with expertise at driving the convergence of brands and culture. She has worked across Fortune 50 companies driving consumer-centric growth strategies focused on cultural relevancy. In 2019 she was named an Adweek “Innovator” and Chicago Business Journal “Woman of Influence.” She is one of the foremost-awarded marketing executives in the field and was also inducted into the American Advertising Federation Advertising Hall of Achievement, the premier industry recognition for leaders under 40 who are making a significant impact in the industry and their communities. She has been listed as Crain’s Chicago Business “40 under 40,” Advertising Age “Women to Watch,” and Black Enterprise “Top Women Executives in Advertising and Marketing.”

Lizette has worked in major marketing roles at McDonald’s, Kimberly-Clark Corporation and PepsiCo. She has consistently remained at the cutting-edge of driving innovative approaches that bring brand and culture together.

In May 2020, Lizette will be joining Facebook as the Global Head of Vertical Solutions Marketing where she will lead a global marketing team tasked with developing progressive marketing approaches to inspire and enable businesses in industries like eCommerce, Retail, Gaming, Travel, CPG, Tech/Telco, Entertainment, Auto and Government, Policy & Advocacy to maximize their potential on Facebook. Bio:

Dania Matos (she/her/ella) leads with love.As the fourth Vice Chancellor for the Division of Equity & Inclusion (E&I) at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley), and a member of Chancellor Carol Christ’s Cabinet, Dania guides and advises on strategies that prioritize social justice, anti-racism, diversity, equity, and inclusion. She started her role in August 2021, envisioning transformative, thriving ecosystems where every person knows they belong as unique members of an intersectional, multifaceted, and expansive campus community. Dania oversees E&I’s wide range of academic, advancement, and leadership opportunities for students, staff, and faculty. She also leads divisional Thriving Initiatives, each of which centers a specific community with a holistic approach to culturally-responsive services, programs, and supports. Dania believes that thriving is rooted in the transformative work UC Berkeley must undertake in order to genuinely live into its long-standing tradition of excellence in higher education. A zealous advocate, Dania has received numerous awards and recognitions. She was an inaugural recipient of the Latina Professional(link is external) Leaders in Action Awards in 2022 for having a strong voice for emerging Latina leaders. In recent years, she was awarded the Top DEI Advocate by the National Diversity Council(link is external); selected as a Leadership Academy Fellow by the Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities(link is external); and named one of the Top 25 Women in Higher Education byDiverse: Issues in Higher Education Magazine(link is external).

Dania has championed equity and justice work in the private, nonprofit, and government sectors throughout her career and even has taken her talents to Broadway. She was the first deputy chief diversity officer at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia; and served in Virginia's public defender’s office. Prior to coming to UC Berkeley, she was the first associate chancellor and chief diversity officer at the University of California, Merced.

She was born in Puerto Rico and raised by a single mom and grandmother–women she credits for shaping her work and advocacy by instilling in her the awareness that she is inheriting a struggle and has a responsibility to do something about the world.

Dania holds a J.D. from the Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law; and a BA from Brown University.

Jasmin Chavez is a dynamic leader with a track record in civic engagement, legislative advocacy, and organizing. She holds degrees in Political Science and Spanish from McDaniel College. At McDaniel, Jasmin founded McDaniel LULAC (The League of United Latin American Citizens) and served as president of the council for three years. Jasmin attributes her success to the experiences and commitment to the community within AARP’s Legal Counsel for the Elderly and as the State Director for Virginia LULAC.

Jasmin is an alumna of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics, the UCLA Labor Center’s Dream Summer Program, and HACU. Jasmin’s commitment to uplifting her community has earned her recognition as a recipient of the LULAC National Woman of the Year Award in 2018 and as a recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International scholarship. Jasmin loves giving back to her community by serving on various boards including McDaniel College’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Advisory Board, the Smithsonian Latino Center’s Young Ambassadors Alumni Network, and Victoria for Congress. Jasmin is a fierce leader who is passionate about social justice.

This episode features Jose Viera who is better known by his stage name Prime Ethic. His career as an opening musical act for Fat Joe as well as many other established performers started in early 2018. Prime has an extensive background in performing arts and entertainment. Growing up in Lakeland, Florida. Prime attended Rochelle School of The Arts as well as Harrison School For The Arts. He later moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue a career in filmmaking and music. Prime is the co-founder of Kevlar Productions.

He discusses his upbringing, being active in activism, creating business ventures, and understanding the multidimensional of the Latinx diaspora. The conversation focuses on impact and the importance of investing in people and communities. Such a great episode that reveals our DNA of chasing greatness and knowing self.

Social Justice NOW: Joint Father and Daughter Interview w/ Juan and Gabriela González

In this episode, I switch it up with our guests! I interview journalist, activist and academic, Juan Gonzalez and his amazing daughter Gabriela Gonzalez who is following in her father's footsteps. The motivation is to gain insight on how history influences our young generations and how they impart that wisdom to continue to do the work needed for social justice. They tag team this interview and we discuss Juan's storied life as a student activist, his time with the Young Lords Party, and his passion for journalism and story-telling. 

For over 30 years, Juan González has been a staff columnist for the New York Daily News and he can be seen as co-host of the radio and television news program, Democracy Now! He is a founding member of the Young Lords Party and also founded the National Congress for Puerto Rican Rights. Juan also received accommodations and praises for his work and won awards like the Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Hispanic Foundation, the National Council of La Raza, and the National Puerto Rican Coalition. He is a two time winner of the George Polk Award for commentary and was the first reporter in New York City to have exposed the health effects and cover up by government officials surround the Sept. 11 attacks.

Gabriela Gonzalez is a second-generation American of Puerto Rican and Dominican descent. She holds a B.A. in Clinical Psychology from CUNY Hunter College and is currently pursuing her MSW. Driven by her passion for child and adolescent mental health, and values surrounding anti-racism and decolonization, Gabi hopes to become a psychotherapist and practice therapy in service of social justice. Her work is inspired by the resilience of the communities that raised her, as well as by her parents, who've used organizing, teaching, and literature as mechanisms for change.
