A society that works for everyone! (Interview with Jenny Victory – Head of the Supported Needs and Disability Office for the Government of Gibraltar)

A society that works for everyone! (Interview with Jenny Victory – Head of the Supported Needs and Disability Office for the Government of Gibraltar)

Jenny Victory has been working within the field of disability since she was a teenager. Her experience ranges from charity work, respite centre manager, special educational needs teacher in a special school and in a secondary school, a learning support facility manager, behaviour consultant, key worker and currently working directly with the Government of Gibraltar, having set up its first Disability Office in 2021.

Working directly under the auspices of Gibraltar’s Chief Minister and with Gibraltar’s Minister for Disability, Jenny is currently developing Gibraltar’s first National Disability Strategy.

Most importantly, Jenny is the mother of a boy with rare chromosomal duplications which causes medical issues and profound learning disability. This has given Jenny insight into the lived experience of persons with disabilities.

Her professional life has ironically merged with her personal life and she has made it her mission to build a community that works for everyone!

What happens to adults with CP? (Interview with Alexandra Perera)

What happens to adults with CP?

It's a lifelong condition which does not disappear as soon as you turn 18 and it's one that both today's guest Alexandra Perera and I know all to well.

When people hear the word CP they immediately think of a person in a wheelchair or people who have increased difficulty walking but that is not the case. Alex is an advocate for people with hidden disabilities and today she'll share her story.

Dominic from Rathfredagh

Dominic from Rathfredagh

Dominic Slowey  is 74 years old and was born in Dublin He was born with cerebral palsy and  epilepsy which he manages with medication.

Dominic attended mainstream education until he was 15 years old.

When he started higher education, the classrooms were upstairs and he was not able to climb the stairs to get to his classrooms so he discontinued attending the school he was attending.

When he was 19 years old he lost all of his sight and moved to another school that was being run by the Christian Brothers, where he stayed until he was around 35 years old.

Prior to losing  his sight, Dominic enjoyed watching movies and today he has a great collection of DVD's which he enjoys listening to the stories.

He also enjoys listening to music and collects CD's of the great composers and conductors.

He is celebrating 40 years of living in his current home which is in Co. Limerick.

He is a very cheerful man and grateful to God for how well he is looked after and able to enjoy his life.

Big thanks to my distant relative Valmai Gee for helping me set this interview. If you would like to learn more about the organisations she works with feel free to check out their websites via the links below:

“Unity in Diversity” (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika): Disability in Indonesia (feat, UGM SAUDC)

We're honoured to be joined by the SAUDC team from Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta Indonesia.

The University is named in honour of Gadjah Mada (1290-1364) who led a campaign to unify the Indonesian Archipelago under the Kingdom of Majapahit. He is now regarded as a national hero in Indonesia and the nation's official motto of "Unity in Diversity" (Bhinneka Tunggal Ika) is derived from the Javanese poem "Kakawin Sutasoma" which was written around the 14th century during the reign of Hayam Wuruk who ruled Majapahit at the height of it's power.

Today the SAUDC team will be telling us about their work.

I've noticed that my podcast has become very popular in Russia

I was originally hesitant to release this episode given recent events involving the Russian Federation.

I've noticed that this show has become very popular in Russia during these last few days.

I hope these listeners can use my podcast as a tool for peace, tolerance and inclusivity, Russia's people deserve a future where they can enjoy the same rights and privilege's as those in other countries.

I for one, believe that future is possible.
