Thursday Tolkien Thoughts: Saruman and His Magic
Thursday Tolkien Thoughts: Saruman and His Magic
Saruman is said to have lost most of his powers by the end of The Lord of the Rings, but what powers did he have?  How did he lose them?  How is that connected to his position in the order of wizards? Tolkien Geek Debunks “10 Ways Lord of the Rings Has Aged Poorly”
Some genius writing for CBR.com wrote this article about how The Lord of the Rings has aged poorly, and it might just be one of the worst pieces of criticism I’ve ever seen, starting with the fact that it’s really only a 5-item list expanded artificially to meet some arbitrary count…. Thursday Tolkien Thoughts: What Does Aragorn Know About Saruman?
In the Appendices we learn that Aragorn, in the guise of Thorongil, advises Ecthelion II, Denethor’s father, to rely on Gandalf rather than Saruman.  Does this imply anything about Aragorn’s knowledge of Saruman? Tolkien Geek Reviews the Soviet Production of “The Fellowship of the Ring” (1991)
Just before the collapse of the Soviet Union, a made-for-television production of “The Lord of the Rings” was begun.  Called “Khraniteli,” it never got further than The Fellowship of the Ring, and it was...interesting to say the least.  But it’s low quality is a bit forgivable when you know the story behind it. Faramir’s High, Middle, and Wild Men: Were Faramir and Numenoreans Simply Racist?
Faramir’s High, Middle, and Wild Men: Were Faramir and Numenoreans Simply Racist?
A lot of people lately have been using Faramir’s remarks about High, Middle (or Twilight) and Wild Men (or Men of the Shadow) as evidence that Tolkien and/or The Lord of the Rings is racist, since it shows he or at least the Numenoreans who developed the classification considered themselves superior to other men.  But is it really that simple?  Or does the classification reflect something more nuanced and less bigoted? Tolkien Geek Reviews “The Rings of Power” Ep. 8: The Central Plot Is Broken
This episode was significantly better than many others in the sense that it was engaging, kept my interest, and things really happened.  But there are still logical issues and the lore breaking goes so far as to destroy much of the underlying logic of The Lord of the Rings…. Tolkien on Secondary Belief and the Need for Realism in Fantasy
Tolkien on Secondary Belief and the Need for Realism in Fantasy
Amazon’s “The Rings of Power” has generated a lot of debate, and one aspect of that is the common criticism that much of the show is unrealistic.  Equally common, seemingly, is a rebuttal to the effect that the show is fantasy and therefore doesn’t need to be realistic.  But Tolkien would very much disagree with this statement. I’ve done some other videos on elements of Tolkien’s “On Fairy Stories” in case you’re interested: On Fairy Stories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnMG5HhKK50&t=1s Eucatastrophe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HqYeBmw4ORY&t=25s Other Links: Utreon: https://utreon.com/c/TolkienLorePodcast/ Rumble at https://rumble.com/c/c-355195 Odysee: https://odysee.com/@TolkienLore:f Twitter: https://twitter.com/jrrtlore Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/tolkiengeek Discord server invite link:  https://discord.gg/EVKynAj2m9 (If link is expired contact me at tolkienloremaster@gmail.comand I’ll send a fresh invite link).

Tolkien Geek Reviews “The Rings of Power” Ep. 7: The Straw that Broke the Camel’s Back
Amazon finally did it—they turned me into a hater of the show.  Up until now it was bad writing and lore changes that I could sort of live with, but now they’ve broken with the legendarium in a way that was completely unnecessary except to serve some poor story-telling choice of their own, and I’ve had it. Response to TheRedBook on Sauron, the One Ring, and Numenor
In an “Appendices” video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sMwwUsirc3w), TheRedBook (https://www.youtube.com/c/TheRedBook) addressed a comment I left on this video about whether Sauron took the Ring to Numenor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JBSgELkQNlg.  My comment built somewhat on my own video on a related topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKzuKSus8FI.  The question ultimately is whether Sauron’s ability to corrupt or influence other minds is enhanced by his own Ring, and in this video I wanted to explain myself a bit further since I think TheRedBook’s responses to my comment showed that I wasn’t sufficiently clear in my point.  Always love a good back and forth with another great channel! Rings of Power Ep. 3 Review: No Problems Fixed, More Added
Episode 3 of The Rings of Power introduces us to Numenor and more plot lines, leaves out Elrond altogether, still gives us no progress with the Harfoots, and fails to improve on many of the issues I noted in the first two episodes.  But to make matters worse, writing inconsistencies have multiplied to the point of being a serious annoyance. Tolkien, Peter Jackson, and the Moral Landscape of The Lord of the Rings
Tolkien’s heroes engage in discussions involving moral quandaries with some frequency, showing that they are careful thinkers.  Peter Jackson’s versions of the same characters...not so much, and the problems go deeper than just skimping the dialogue to save screen time. How Peter Jackson Should Have Framed the Hobbit Trilogy
How Peter Jackson Should Have Framed the Hobbit Trilogy
One of my biggest concerns prior to The Hobbit being released as a movie trilogy was how to go from the epic, adult level of The Lord of the Rings to the child-oriented whimsy of The Hobbit, and while Peter Jackson made some moves in the right direction, I think there’s a better way he could have gone about it. Dispelling Myths About the Nazgul and the Nine Rings
My video on why Sauron couldn’t recover his Ring after being defeated in the War of the Last Alliance (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sKzuKSus8FI) generated several comments about the Nazgul and the Nine Rings that show many people have what I think is a mistaken view of how those Rings work, but which also raise some additional questions worth addressing, so let’s dive into some Ring lore! Lord of the Rings Theory: What If Isildur Had Survived and Kept the Ring?
Following up my video on the soft retcon of Isildur (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYvQdTzfk44), I now address the question of what would have happened to Isildur and the Ring had he survived the Disaster of the Gladden Fields and managed to hold on to the Ring.  Would he have given the Ring to the Wise as planned, or would he have succumbed to corruption and become the new Ring Lord? For a different take, I again recommend InDeepGeek’s excellent video on Isildur: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSErzSst1R4 Other Links: Rumble at https://rumble.com/c/c-355195 Odysee: https://odysee.com/@TolkienLore:f Twitter: https://twitter.com/jrrtlore Patreon: www.patreon.com/tolkiengeek Discord server invite link:  https://discord.gg/EVKynAj2m9 (If link is expired contact me at tolkienloremaster@gmail.comand I’ll send a fresh invite link).

The Lord of the Rings gives us relatively little back story on Isildur, and what little we learn makes him look somewhat prideful and corruptible.  But when Tolkien expanded on his story in later writings he began to look a lot more like a tragic hero.   For Robert’s (InDeepGeek) video on Isildur and a slightly different take, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SSErz...  For my Hobbit retcon video, go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIbXf...   Other Links:   Rumble at https://rumble.com/c/c-355195   Odysee: https://odysee.com/@TolkienLore:f   Twitter: https://twitter.com/jrrtlore  Patreon: www.patreon.com/tolkiengeek  Discord server invite link: https://discord.gg/EVKynAj2m9  (If link doesn’t work, write me at tolkienloremaster@gmail.com and I’ll send a fresh invite link).

Tolkien, Allegory, and Applicability: Freedom of the Reader Is Not License to Reinterpret
Tolkien, Allegory, and Applicability: Freedom of the Reader Is Not License to Reinterpret
I’ve noticed that many people, when trying to justify their opinions about Tolkien’s works, resort to his statement about preferring “applicability,” which lies in the freedom of the individual reader, to allegory, which is the purposed domination of the author.  But does Tolkien’s statement really give us freewheeling license to interpret his work however we want? For my video on authorial intent vs. death of the author, a distinction which actually is relevant to justifying broad interpretive license, check here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n49foLSWx50 Other Links: Rumble at https://rumble.com/c/c-355195 Odysee: https://odysee.com/@TolkienLore:f Twitter: https://twitter.com/jrrtlore Patreon: www.patreon.com/tolkiengeek

Boromir, Faramir, and even Gandalf all have something important to say about the decision to send Boromir to Rivendell instead of Faramir, and how we reconcile all these statements has significant implications for how we understand the characters. The "Translation" of the Lord of the Rings
Did you know The Lord of the Rings is a translation of a real work?  Well, not really, of course, but Tolkien wrote it as if he really found some ancient writings.  Here's some of the fun nerdy things related to this idea.

Tolkien and Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics
Tolkien and Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics
Tolkien bucked a lot of trends in his day, and that extended even to his professional work.  His influence is perhaps strongest with regard to the Old English poem Beowulf, and in this video I discuss some of his ideas as presented in a lecture (now available as an essay) titled "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics."   You can find a copy of the essay here: https://www.amazon.com/Monsters-Critics-Essays-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/026110263X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1508071811&sr=8-1&keywords=the+monsters+and+the+critics+and+other+essays   You can also get Tolkien's own translation of the poem here: https://www.amazon.com/Beowulf-Translation-Commentary-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0544570308/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1508071762&sr=8-3&keywords=beowulf   Also, a quick note on the video--I recorded it as usual but for some reason the clips came out truncated and so there's a bit missing at the transitions.  Nothing critical left out, luckily, and hopefully I won't have this problem again!

Perhaps Tolkien's only foray into outright comedy, Farmer Giles of Ham is humorous on multiple levels, from its nature as a parody to the many language-based jokes Tolkien includes in the story.  It's a short, whimsical read very different from what most of us know Tolkien for, and well worth picking up.  I recommend picking up this compilation: https://www.amazon.com/Tales-Perilous-Realm-J-R-R-Tolkien/dp/0547154119/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1477875238&sr=1-4&keywords=farmer+giles+of+ham  Unfortunately I can't seem to find an edition with commentary to explain the jokes that require more learning, but this at least has several other stories worth having in your collection.

In my previous video about Tolkien's lecture/essay, "On Fairy Stories" (here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnMG5HhKK50), I focused on the theme of sub-creation.  Here, I want to discuss another concept, "eucatastrophe," which is a word Tolkien coined to describe it.  Here's the video where I discussed the them of sub-creation in the Silmarillion: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOpbrkRe3Q

On Fairy Stories
On Fairy Stories
"On Fairy Stories" is a lecture delivered by Tolkien in which he goes over some of his thoughts on the fantasy genre, its purposes, proper audience, and value as an art form.  It's full of gems, so I only have time to cover one theme of the essay.

5 Missed Opportunities in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Movies
Last week (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MXxGQ0tsWII) I discussed what I think are the best scenes in Peter Jackson's movie trilogy.  In this video, I want to discuss the scenes that were pretty good, but could have been much better, even phenomenal, and how that could have been done.
