S2E1: Zaakir Tameez
Zaakir Tameez is a second year at Yale Law School. He is interested in antitrust, technology, civil rights, education, and first amendment law.
Previously, Zaakir was an LL.M. student at the Centre for Commercial Law Studies at Queen Mary University of London as a Fulbright Scholar. There, he studied European competition and data protection law. He also co-authored two law review articles on anticompetitive practices in the pharmaceutical industry.
He also worked for one year as the inaugural presidential fellow for Jim Ryan, the ninth president of the University of Virginia and a preeminent scholar of education law. Zaakir tried his hand at speechwriting, executive search, community relations, conflict resolution, communications strategy, higher education leadership, and executive management.
Before these two fellowships, Zaakir was a student at UVA, where he double majored in Economics and Political & Social Thought. During one summer, he interned for the Nobel Laureate in Economics, Joseph Stiglitz. For his honors program, he completed a 120 page thesis on Big Tech and Antitrust, advised by the prominent antitrust economist, UVA Professor Kenneth Elzinga.
Zaakir is also a committed student organizer and activist. In high school, he plunged into community organizing by rallying students to create a school-district-wide organization described as "student government on steroids" by NPR. In the summer before college, he filed a 30 page amicus curiae brief with the Texas Supreme Court, who described the brief as "excellent", providing everyday student stories to demonstrate inadequate school funding.
As a student at UVA, he founded and chaired Gov. McAuliffe's Task Force on Millennial Civic Engagement, killed bills in the Virginia General Assembly that threatened student financial aid, and supported numerous projects for the Albemarle County Public Schools Division.
Zaakir is nearly-fluent in Arabic, after five years of study, and he loves Kit Kat, Milanos, and chocolate milk.
