Playful Spiritual Practices for Moms with Christine Sine
Episode Summary: Do you ever start reading a book and feel like the author just ripped your thoughts and feelings from your mind and wrote them down much more poetically and eloquently than you could? Then as you read along feel a sense of validation for some crazy, out-of-the-box beliefs you have because someone else was published for sharing them? Ok, so maybe that is just me, but that is how I felt reading The Gift of Wonder. When I reached out to tell Christine Sine how connected I felt to her book and she responded with an offer to join me on my podcast, I was thrilled. I pray you are as encouraged by her creative and playful take on spiritual practices as I am, and that you will be inspired to step out-of-the-box with the ways you connect to God throughout your day. Christine’s Bio: “Christine Aroney-Sine is the founder and facilitator for the popular contemplative blog Godspace, (godspacelight.com) which grew out of her passion for creative spirituality, gardening and sustainability. Christine describes herself as a contemplative activist, passionate gardener, author, and liturgist. She loves messing with church traditions and inspiring followers of Jesus to develop creative approaches to spirituality that intertwine the sacred through all of life.  She facilitates workshops on contemplative and creative spiritual practices, spirituality and gardening, simplicity and sustainability as well as how to develop a more spiritual rhythm for our lives. She often encourages participants to paint rocks or leaves, plant contemplative gardens, walk labyrinths and create spiritual pathways that draw us into deeper intimacy with God. Christine is inspired by Celtic Christian spirituality, which has opened her eyes to the God who is present in every moment, every experience and every place. She is open to learning from everyone and everything around.” Verses from the episode: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Luke 18:16 Links from the episode: (This may contain some affiliate links, which means I receive a small commission, at no extra cost to you, if you make a purchase using these links. How God is using Connected Families to Make Me a Better Mom
Episode Summary: One of my daughters had the “worst day of her life today” and I didn’t. It was hard, but I experienced the Holy Spirit working in my heart, my parenting, and my family. We all have bad days, but can we as mamas learn to not let our kids’ bad days become our bad days or feel like their behavior is a reflection of our parenting? How do we hold on to Jesus and trust we are doing our best as mamas when we are getting called “the worst mom in the world”? Ultimately, Jesus, but an awesome tool that he is using in my life is the Connected Families’ Framework. In this episode, I introduce you to the Connected Families’ Framework and the four messages that it is built upon. These are messages that we can seek to share with our kids through our words and actions during peaceful times, conflict, and discipline. These messages point us all to Jesus and his salvific work on the cross. They are: You are safe with me. You are loved no matter what. You are called and capable. You are responsible for your actions. Ep 014: Should We Celebrate Halloween?
Episode Summary: This episode is really just some of the thoughts that have been on my heart over the last few weeks about Halloween.  I encourage you to follow your convictions, but as Tara Leigh-Cobble of The Bible Recap says, “don’t shout where the Bible whispers and don’t whisper where the Bible shouts.” Halloween and Trick or treating are not in the Bible. If your family’s version of Halloween involves costumes and candy, I think you should enjoy it and use it as an opportunity to shine the light of Jesus.  If you feel convicted otherwise, follow God’s leading, but be open-minded and non-judgemental of families who do not share the same conviction. God is in control as much on October 31 as he is any other day of the year! Love ya, mamas! Keep playing! BONUS EP: New Resource for Teaching Kids Church History, Danika Cooley's Who What Why Book Series, Halloween Alternative, Reformation Day Play
Episode Summary: In this bonus episode, I share about a great resource for teaching your elementary-aged kids about church history in a fun way. This is a new book series by Danika Cooley called the Who What Why? Series. It includes three books: Who Was Martin Luther? What Was the Gutenberg Bible? Why Did the Reformation Happen? This book series has history, culture, theology, humor, and the gospel all in an easy-to-read, fun collection. I love Danika Cooley’s style of writing. It feels like I am listening to a mom playfully telling her kids stories from church history. The book is filled with grace and truth, as Cooley lovingly corrects the poor theology that caused the Reformation and points the reader to the gift of salvation through Christ alone. Such a great resource for Christian families! Ep 013 Starting Little with Christie Thomas
Episode Summary: This is such a fun conversation with Christie Thomas of Little Shoots Deep Roots. We talk about how small habits can make a big impact and how spiritual parenting can be awkward at times, but grows to become more natural as we begin to add little touch points of faith throughout our days and lives. Christie’s Bio: After getting a BSc in Biology, Christie spent her entire adult working life in Children's Ministries until, a few years ago, God called her home to educate her three boys and to run Little Shoots, Deep Roots. She's written several books to help your kids know and love God, including Quinn's Promise Rock, and Fruit Full, a devotional on the fruit of the Spirit. Episode 012: A Practical Theology of Arts, Crafts, and Creativity
Episode Summary: In this episode, I share a theology of creativity and how we can better incorporate that into our lives, our kids, and our faith. We talk about process art vs product art, plus being made in the image of a creative God. I also share NASA research that proves we are all “creative geniuses” from birth and we talk about ways to practice using that creativity that is still there in all of us. Verses from the episode: Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Genesis 1:1 Genesis 1:27 Links from the episode: “You're 96 Percent Less Creative Than You Were as a Child.”  “We are born creative geniuses and the education system dumbs us down, according to NASA scientists“ Playfully Faithful Parenting Podcast is a ministry of CreatedtoPlay.com. The Importance of Sunday School for your Spiritual Parenting
Episode Summary: In this episode, we talk about the history and importance of Sunday School and Children’s Ministry for your family. All of these benefits are to support and equip families as they pursue Christ every day in their homes and in their communities. Children’s ministry is not designed to be your child’s primary discipleship. We all need more than 1 hour of Jesus a week. Here are the benefits of Sunday School that we discuss: 1) Kids learn that church is a fun, safe place. 2) Children develop relationships with other trusted Christian adults. 3) Kids connect with other Christian kids. 4) Kids can learn from others’ creativity and perspective, not just mama’s. 5) Parents build relationships that can provide resources for helping minister to our kids at home. 6) It reinforces lessons kids learn at home. 7) It provides a safe place for kids to practice having faith discussions outside of the home. 8) It provides a safe place for older children, teens, and adults to express their gifts and serve God and his people. What is Play? Taking a theoretical and theological look at play.
Episode Summary: Let’s talk about what play really is. We will look at it both from a scholarly and a Biblical POV. United Nation’s Committee on the Rights of the Child’s definition: “‘Play’:  Children’s play is any behaviour, activity or process initiated, controlled and structured by children themselves; it takes place whenever and wherever opportunities arise. Caregivers may contribute to the creation of environments in which play takes place, but play itself is non-compulsory, driven by intrinsic motivation and undertaken for its own sake, rather than as a means to an end. Play involves the exercise of autonomy, physical, mental or emotional activity, and has the potential to take infinite forms, either in groups or alone. These forms will change and be adapted throughout the course of childhood. The key characteristics of play are fun, uncertainty, challenge, flexibility and non-productivity. Together, these factors contribute to the enjoyment it produces and the consequent incentive to continue to play. While play is often considered non-essential, the Committee reaffirms that it is a fundamental and vital dimension of the pleasure of childhood, as well as an essential component of physical, social, cognitive, emotional and spiritual development.” (As defined in UN’s General Comment #17 on article 31) Biblically play is seen in times of peace, restoration, and celebration. It is also deeply connected to Sabbath which demonstrates trusting God to remain in control as you take time to glorify him through enjoying the life he has given you. We also look at the concepts of free-play & guided-play. 004: Benefits of Play
Episode Summary: In this episode we look at play and the important role it plays in a child’s development. The Areas of Development: cognitive (includes language) social-emotional physical spiritual Play builds synapses between neurons in the brain, When these connections are not made they are pruned making it more difficult to build later on. If we can build our children’s brains’ connections in ways that glorify God and point them to him when they are young it will be much easier for them to continue on that path. 003: 10 Tips to Introduce your kids to Jesus
Episode Summary: In Episode 003 we discuss 10 tips for introducing your kids to Jesus. Ultimately, it is not our responsibility whether our children choose to follow Christ or not; it is theirs. Even if we do everything right, which we won’t, our kids may choose their own path or take a few detours. Your job is to teach them well, pray for them often, and then, trust God with the rest. Here are a few tips to help you teach your kids about Christ: Keep age-appropriate Bibles and Bible Storybooks around your house. And, read them playfully! Pray with your child each night, big bold prayers and tiny little prayers! Learn fun blessings to use at mealtimes. Apologize to your kids when you make mistakes or lose your cool. Talk about God as Creator when you are outside in nature. Sing Sunday School songs from your childhood, if you know any. Listen to praise music together. Tell your kids what a great job God did when He made them! “Wow, I love how silly God made you!” Teach in your child’s Sunday School class. Have other Christian adults regularly in your child’s life. BONUS TIP!! 11. Keep faith fun! Laugh, sing, play, and celebrate every day! 002: How to Start Spiritual Parenting
Episode Summary: As a Christian mama you have decided that you want your kids to know and love Jesus. You believe that God, through his Word, has called you to be the one to teach your children and journey with them and the Holy Spirit. So, now what? The most important first step in introducing your kids to Jesus, is you having a vibrant, life-giving relationship with Him. You must spend time with Him. You must know you are loved and you must love Him. When you are closely following Jesus, you won’t be able to stop from sharing Him with your children. Your kids deserve a mama that is in a healthy spiritual place because you will be a better mom with Jesus. But, that is a by-product! God wants a relationship with you, just to have a relationship with you. He is not merely equipping you to serve others or point them to Him. He desperately wants a deep, intimate, and authentic relationship with you, his created, chosen, and loved daughter and friend.  You can’t earn more of His love no matter how many devotionals you read, prayers you say, or your children walk with Him. In this episode we will talk about some simple ways to prioritize and nurture your faith.
