17. This One Tip Will Help You Advance Your Career

17. This One Tip Will Help You Advance Your Career

  • This One Tip Will Advance Your Career.
    • Today, I will be discussing informational interviews.
  • Informational interviews are essential to helping you find out more about the type of industry, company, or role you’re interested in,” says Dorie Clark, author of Stand Out Networking.
    • “You may think you already know all about a certain position, but speaking to someone directly allows you to test your assumptions.” John Lees, a UK-based career strategist and author of The Success Code, agrees.
    • Informational interviews “give you exposure — a way to get yourself known in the hidden job market,” he says. “The visibility may put you straight onto a shortlist, even if a job isn’t advertised.”
  • An informational interview can help you build relationships with individuals in your field of interest.
  • During the interview make sure, your interviewee does most of the talking.
  • The interview is an opportunity for you to test your hypothesis about your dream career.
  • Questions to ask:
  • How do you get into this line of work?
  • What do you enjoy about it?
  • What’s not so great about it?
  • What’s changing in the sector?
  • What kinds of people do well in this industry?
  • Don’t make PERMANENT decisions based on your conversation with one person. Try your best to interview at least three individuals.
  • E-mail template to request an informational interview
    • Hello, Mr./Ms./Dr.

My name is Malik Taylor, and I'm a junior majoring in Media Studies at UC Berkeley. Is this a good time for you to talk briefly? I heard you speak at an event sponsored by the Undergraduate Marketing Association last semester. Although I am not currently looking for a job, I have become very interested in public relations and would like to learn more about the field. Would it be possible to schedule 20 to 30 minutes with you at your convenience to ask a few questions and get your advice on how best to prepare to enter the field?"

16. How to Discover Your Dream career?

16. How to Discover Your Dream career?

Do you think it is possible to have a dream career?

A dream career doesn’t mean the journey will be easy. It means you will have a career that matches your skills, interests, and potential. It will also provide you a financial reward that matches your expertise.

Questions to ask yourself to help identify your dream career

Who are you?

  • Knowing who you are is essential to identify your strengths.
  • Your race, background, environment, language, and culture can help you identify your dream career.
  • Take a listen to the podcast- it will help you understand what I mean.

Life career themes

  • “... life career themes are ideas, beliefs, attitudes, and values that people hold about themselves, others, and the world at large. These “I am,” “Others are,” and “Life is” statements have a lot to do with people’s behavior. By looking at behavior—both words and actions—you can infer or directly observe life career themes. Excerpt From: Gysbers, Norman C., Heppner, Mary J., Johnston, Joseph A. “Career Counseling.”
  • What are you good at? What do you like about your previous work experiences?
  • What subjects or courses did you like when you were in high school and college?
  • If there were headlines about your life? What would it say?

Do you prefer working with data, ideas, things, and people? Or a combination of these things?

  • Take a listen to the podcast to hear how answering these questions can lead you to identify your dream career.

8. Manifesting Does Not Work

It does not work. When something bad happens to someone telling them that they didn't pray enough. They didn't visualize enough, it is OFFENSIVE!!!
Manifesting does not work!
Have you ever tried to manifest something and it didn't work? It might have worked sometimes, but it didn't work all the time.
Yes, that's proof that manifesting does not work!

Take a listen and message me on Instagram so that we can chat about it. LINK BELOW

4. Self-Care Tips for Busy People with Dr. Liz Adedokun

In this episode, I am joined by Dr. Liz as she shares with us realistic and affordable ways to engage in self-care. I loved when Dr. Liz mentioned that self-care is about replenishing ourselves. Keep listening to get the full gist!

Dr. Elizabeth Adedokun, Ph.D., LMFT, is a licensed marriage and family therapist with 7 years of experience working with adolescents aged 12 to 17 and their families struggling with severe depression, anxiety, and interpersonal relationship issues. Elizabeth received her Master’s degree at Northwestern University in 2014 and holds a Doctorate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy from Drexel University. Dr. Adedokun currently works at Hennepin County, assisting adults with severe mental health illnesses.

Dr. Adedokun also works part-time in private practice, providing therapy for new parents, young women, and adolescents struggling with symptoms of depression, low self-esteem, and anxiety.  Additionally, Dr. Adedokun serves on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.

In 2016, Dr. Adedokun published an article focusing on mental health in the Black community from a spiritual perspective. Her article is still being cited in scholarly articles to this day. As Dr. Adedokun continues to work closely with the Black community in Minneapolis, her hope is to help decrease the stigma around mental health by providing a safe space for clients to feel heard, seen, and validated. When Dr. Adedokun is not working, she enjoys spending time with her two children and husband.
