Introducing: The Joy of Membership Podcast

Introducing: The Joy of Membership Podcast

A special message from Joy Duling:

After a year of hosting the live weekly broadcasts for The Member Experience Advantage, I felt like it was time to shake things up a bit. This broadcast really started out as a personal challenge for myself to get comfortable with my voice and share some thoughts that I hope you’ve found helpful during our time together.

When the uncertainty of the COVID-10 pandemic hit earlier this year, I found myself - like many of you - sitting with a feeling of uncertainty. I wondered how my clients would react, could my business weather this storm, and what did I need to do to support the organizations that I serve?

I realized that the most important thing that I could do was just show up and do what I could to be helpful. As I talked to clients and others in this field, I realized that many organizations were asking that same question, “How can we be helpful?”

It turns out that there were many different answers to that question, but simply staying focused on that one simple thing connects organizations to their core purpose - serving members in a way that is meaningful and has inherent value.

So, I chose THAT as my theme for a brand new podcast… The Joy of Membership Podcast explores the stories of people and organizations who have asked that simple question, “how can we be helpful?”  Together, we can learn from their aha moments and find new ways that you, too, can be helpful and build value for your members.

You’ll find The Joy of Membership podcast on all of the major platforms and, at the time that I’m recording this, there are several episodes already waiting for you to dive in.

I can’t wait to hear what you think of the new show. Please drop a line and let me know or leave a review and help me spread the word.

Take care and I’ll see you soon at The Joy of Membership Podcast.

Engaging Members with Surprise & Delight

Engaging Members with Surprise & Delight

It's really not hard to create delightful surprises for membership. You just have to intentionally design it into your membership experience. This week, I'm sharing a story about how I decided to LEAVE a membership, then received a completely surprising response from the leader.  It was a decision-changing moment.

What are the BEST Member Benefits to Offer?

What are the BEST Member Benefits to Offer?

When I ran groups that catered more to "founders" of membership programs, I was often asked if I had a list of ALL the membership benefits that someone could potentially offer. That question is coming up again, but now from even people who have been running their membership organizations for years. That was the topic of this week's broadcast.

That Steady Thumpa-Thumpa-Thumpa - That's Your Member Experience

That Steady Thumpa-Thumpa-Thumpa - That's Your Member Experience

Most people think that member experience is comprised of the flashy stuff – slick welcome kits, fancy technologies, unscalable processes, etc.  Things that provoke a “wow”, but simply aren’t practical, affordable, or realistic for organizations that have lean staffing and budgets.  Instead, they need to think of it as the steady, reliable bass line that thumps away under the melody.

This podcast episode is a replay of the live show that happens every Friday at 11 am CST.  Each week, we focus on a topic intended to help you grow your association, trade group, professional society, or membership-based nonprofit.  If you enjoy this podcast, we also offer a 75-minute growth workshop, "Growth Guaranteed: The No-Fail Model for Attracting, Engaging and Retaining All The Members Your Organization Needs to Thrive".

Is It Time to Revisit Your Onboarding Process?

Recently, Joy had the opportunity to work with a client on reviewing/redesigning her organization’s onboarding process.

Making some changes was something that this client had been thinking about for a while, but when COVID-19 forced organizations to completely and instantaneously shift from in-person member experiences to online member experiences, a new sense of urgency arose around the issue.

Simple Isn't Always Easy

Simple Isn't Always Easy

Why is it that organizations tend to value complexity over simplicity? Just because something is simple does not mean that it's going to be easy. In fact, because you think it's going to be simple, you may be placing yourself at a disadvantage. That's our topic for this week's episode.

Why Potential Members Don't Know You Exist (& What To Do About It) - Part 4 of 4

This is the final broadcast in our 4-part series about why people don't know that your organization exists. It is incredibly frustrating to be doing great work and feel like no one is even paying attention.  This week, we're focused on actually CAPTURING the fact that someone has noticed your existence because often I find that leaders *feel* like no one is noticing when the reality is that they're just not aware that those people have moved (or could move) into the "contemplation" stage.

Flying the Friendly Galaxy - Partnering with Vendors, Sponsors, and Business Affiliate Members

Flying the Friendly Galaxy - Partnering with Vendors, Sponsors, and Business Affiliate Members

Most organizations want to create additional lines of revenue by involving business partners in some way - through sponsorships or perhaps a specific type of membership level made for them.  However, most don't give a lot of thought to creating win-win-win ways of working together. When you do so, you can create a lot more value for your members.

Here's the video that I mention on this week's episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21hbvm69i4k

Member Experience Design - Expectations vs. Reality

Member Experience Design - Expectations vs. Reality

The road to creating an engaging and effective member experience is full of misperception potholes and long-standing “we’ve-always-done-it-this-way” detours. Sadly, such misperceptions and well-intended traditions can hold an organization back in its growth.

In preparation for this broadcast, Joy asked people who had gone through one of our Member Experience Design Groups about their perceptions about Experience Design BEFORE the program, vs. the reality that they discovered AFTER.

In this broadcast, Joy shares two themes that commonly arise.
