Episode 10 - Anger, Sin, and Mental Illness

Episode 10 - Anger, Sin, and Mental Illness

This week is the first of our discussions about the seven deadly sins. We start off our discussions with anger, and in this week's episode we talk about when is anger normal and healthy, and when does it cross a line and become sin. In this episode, we reference Mark 3:4-5, which says, "Another time Jesus went into the synagogue, and a man with a shriveled hand was there. Some of them were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely to see if he would heal him on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Stand up in front of everyone.” Then Jesus asked them, “Which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to kill?” But they remained silent. He looked around at them in anger and, deeply distressed at their stubborn hearts." We also referenced Matthew 21:12, which says, "Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves."

We also reference an NIH case study on anger and mental illness, as well as an NPR article about anger and depression. Lastly, I am including a TalkSpace article about how it is normal to feel anger towards someone with a mental illness and how we can handle that anger in a healthy way.

If you have thoughts on this episode, or thoughts on something you would like to hear about in a future episode, I would love to hear them. You can leave me a voice message through the Anchor App, or you can email me at ALightInTheDarknessPodcast@gmail.com.

Thank you for listening. Until next time, be well.

Episode 8 - We Are All Blessed, Mental Illness Be Damned

This week, we are talking about why we are all blessed, regardless of the battles we may have with mental illness. So glad you could join us.

Today's Scripture:

Matthew 5:5-9 - "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.”

Job 2:9-10 - “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die! And Job replied, you are talking like a foolish woman, Shall we accept good from God and not trouble?”

Episode 7 - Belonging

Episode 7 - Belonging

This week we are talking about belonging. Belonging in Christ, belonging in the church, and how that sense of belonging is helpful in the overall battle with mental illness, which so often lies to us and says that we don't belong.

Genesis 18:19 - Keep the way of the LORD by doing what is right and just. Then I will do...all that I have promised.

Hebrews 10:25 - Let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

Romans 12:4-5 - Just as our bodies have many parts and each part has a special function, so it is with Christ's body. We are many parts of one body, and we all belong to each other.
