What is Endometriosis & what Larissa Kutny is doing to promote greater understanding of Endo

What is Endometriosis & what Larissa Kutny is doing to promote greater understanding of Endo

This week on the podcast we’re talking all about endometriosis - what it is, how to go about finding out if you have endo, and we’re talking to Larissa Kutny, an osteopath who has endometriosis herself. Endometriosis is a painful disorder where tissue similar to the tissue that is normally found in your uterus grows on the outside of your uterus. In the same way that the tissue in your uterus will thicken, break down, and bleed during each period, the tissue will do the same on the outside of your fallopian tubes or ovaries (wherever this tissue is growing), but since there’s no way for the broke down tissue to exit your body- the blood becomes trapped and thus results in sever pelvic pain during menstruation. Researchers believe that endo affects about 11% of women and menstruators - it’s characterized by painful periods that extends before and after your period, there’s more bleeding than usual with heavy periods or even bleeding between periods, pain during sex, and pain when you go to the bathroom. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms go to the doctor and ask them about endometriosis, and Larissa, our guest on the podcast has a couple of questions that you can ask your doctor - she explains how she was diagnosed and also how long it took to get the diagnosis. What if Period Dramas were really about Periods, a new play on the history of Menstruation by Heather Milsted

What if Period Dramas were really about Periods, a new play on the history of Menstruation by Heather Milsted

Period Dramas and Periods.  That's what Heather Milsted set out to develop with her newest play.

Heather is a London based actor, theatre-maker, writer, poet and facilitator. She started creating work at university, where she realized that the gaps surrounding women’s history and the lack of female playwrights, needed addressing.

Heather is a clumsy and queer history nerd who creates taboo-busting, cross-art form work that is chaotic and all embracing, telling stories that are too often pushed to the side. She has performed throughout the UK at venues including the National Student Drama Festival, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Warwick Arts Centre.

This year at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, she brought her new play PERIOD DRAMAS to life, we're talking to Heather all about creating this play along with the history of menstruation!  Learn more about her on our blog Jubilance.com/blog

The Survival Story of a Reluctant Teen Mom

The Survival Story of a Reluctant Teen Mom

Today on the podcast we have Leslie Hope Holthoff, author of a new autobiography about her life as a teen mom and growing up.

The good news is, in America, teen pregnancy has steadily declined since the early nineties. The bad news is there are still girls raising children, and fifty percent of them won’t graduate from high school.

Leslie was a scared little girl, overwhelmed by shame and self-hatred, whose tools for understanding sex and knowing how to stop it simply didn’t exist. By the time she was staring at two pink lines on a pregnancy test when she was just fifteen, her life already felt like it belonged to someone else.

Not Mary Not Roe is Holthoff’s stereotype-shattering story that explores the nuances of social mores, family upbringing, and religion that can become unwitting contributors to teen pregnancy. Her narrative begs the question: If we don’t teach young people about sex, how can we force them to bear the consequences?

How to move to Remote Work and Career Breaks with Cali O'Connors The Travel Shifters

How to move to Remote Work and Career Breaks with Cali O'Connors The Travel Shifters

Cali O'Connor is a recovering corporate hustler.  She didn’t realize it, but she was addicted to hard work and the praise that came along with it. The praise fueled the self-induced stress spiral which ultimately led to a breaking point. Until this point she was distracted by her achievements within the company, but a day didn’t go by without wishing she was somewhere else. She couldn’t see herself continuing on this trajectory, she couldn’t see a position in this company where she’d be happy (despite 4 promotions in 3 years), she needed A BREAK.  So she left and pursued the ONLY thing she cared about. World travel. For 2.5 years.   For the first time in her life she felt like she was doing what she was supposed to be doing. She will never forget the feeling that overcame her from her window seat on her flight to Nairobi...  So she started The Travel Shifters to help others do the same, to leave the corporate world, or at least their desks behind, and take the road less traveled, a life of adventure and loving what you do!  We're talking to her about starting her company, her world travels, and living in Mexico.

First Period Stories Founders on Menstrual Tales from All Over the World

First Period Stories Founders on Menstrual Tales from All Over the World

As three women sat on a roof, having lunch and sharing their first period stories, they realized something. That each of their stories were unique, yet totally relatable. They wanted to hear more. All 3.7 billion of them.

Firstperiodstories.com is a place where they share their unique stories, whether they be funny, cringe-worthy, or just plain awkward.

It's a place for those experiencing their first period where they can go and not feel so alone. Because we all know you can be armed with tampons and pads, and still not be ready for your period.

This is a place for us to laugh, because how else are we supposed to deal with the once-a-month war in our uterus?

But mostly, they've created a community that supports each other, no matter what bloody mess we're in. Because we're all going through this together.  We're so excited to have the girls from First Period Stories on the Podcast today to discuss their amazing blog and Newsletter!
