138 ~ Unstoppable Desire and Acknowledgment
Welcome to the Art of Grateful Leadership Podcast Over the last couple episodes I’ve had a particular theme when it comes to building the acknowledgment / grateful leader habit. Welcome to the Art of Grateful Leadership Podcast This is the third in a series of episodes giving you some tips regarding how to acknowledge.   I’m going to say it again: I can’t stress enough that desire is the beginning of learning It’s the beginning of becoming a better acknowledger   If you know the “Why?” AND It’s a powerful enough “Why?” You will find the how.   I’ve heard it said that: Thoughts build Actions Actions build Habits Habits build Character and  Character builds Destiny   I can assume that you have the thoughts to acknowledge others; you are listening to this podcast. We are talking about the actions, about how to acknowledge another person   The next step is to take a deep breath, and talk to the other person. Let the acknowledgment you have brewing in your mind out. Summon up that amount of courage and let the other person know that who they are has touched the life of another person. 135 ~ Acknowledgment Tips - How To

[GM Social Media Compliance]   Welcome to the Art of Grateful Leadership Podcast   For the last few episodes, I have been focused on Time; Taking time to acknowledge NOW; Time itself can be an acknowledgment; And the world needs Acknowledgment NOW   In this episode, I want to emphasize simplicity   I don’t know about you, But I tend to over complicate things. And my conversations with Judy Umlas bring me back to the simpler explanations.   The other day, Judy was reviewing an episode of this podcast And had to talk to me. "You’re over complicating things And it scares me!"   If there was something to stop you in your tracks, It’s when your mentor says something scares them.   So I stopped Shut my mouth And opened my ears   That’s when some of the simplest, and yet profound thoughts were presented to me from Judy. And I want to share them with you here, in this episode   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL;

123 ~ The Five Cs - Commitment Part 2
For the last few episodes, we have been discussing the Five Cs as found in the book Grateful Leadership: Using the Power of Acknowledgment to Engage All Your People and Achieve Superior Results By Judith W. Umlas These are the recipe for acknowledgment The five Cs are: Consciousness Choice  Courage  Communication And Commitment In case you didn’t know this, Judith W. Umlas listens to each, and every podcast episode before it is published. While listening to the last episode Judy Umlas noted that I spoke of what an individual could do both for themselves,  with whom they interact, and for organizations through teaching and presenting.   Those are all noble and valid ways to pass along the Grateful Leadership message. But is there another way to bring this to an organization? Yes there is.   Can you imagine what could happen if a company put their efforts behind the Grateful Leadership culture?  And does this make a difference?   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL; Walter Robb; Whole Foods

122 ~ The Five Cs - Commitment
In this episode we are going to delve into the fifth of the five Cs - Commitment, and why this is so important. Let’s review the recipe, otherwise known as the Five Cs as described in Judith W. Umlas’ book Grateful Leadership - Using the Power of Acknowledgment to Engage All Your People and Achieve Superior Results You begin with the first C - Consciousness; the  conscious realization that another person should be acknowledged   Then you move along to the second C - Choice; the choice to acknowledge that person. You know that you could choose to keep your acknowledgment to yourself, or choose to impact another’s life by letting them know that the world sees something about them that is outstanding Then there is the third C - Courage; when one is speaking of Grateful Leadership and the Power of Acknowledgment,  courage refers to the internal strength to continue along the path to acknowledging  another person. It is the internal mental strength take that next step, especially when you don’t know how the acknowledgment will turn out. Once you have realized how much courage you have within you, it’s time to move to the fourth C - Communication. Communication all begins from the heart. Remember, if the acknowledgment is sincere and comes from the heart, you can’t go wrong The fifth and final C is Commitment. Why is Commitment so important? Because without it, the message will be lost   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL; Commitment

110 ~ Grateful Leadership and the Power of Acknowledgment
Over the last few episodes, we have heard Susan Parente tell us about Grateful Leadership and High Performance Teams, the fact that The Power of Acknowledgment can help  SUPERCHARGE your team. Whether you’re practicing Agile/Scrum or Waterfall as a project management Methodology, or whether you’re working on a co-located or virtual team, Grateful Leadership and the Power of Acknowledgment is appropriate through all of these and is even needed more in virtual teams Susan even brought up the concept of intentional acknowledgments. Where you, with intent, look for ways to acknowledge those people that are working on your team with you. We all know that spontaneous is great, but sometimes it takes intentional commitment to reaching out to those people that you don't see all the time, be sure to reach out to the, acknowledging what they bring to the team and how valuable they are. Since these episodes were recorded, I have had the chance to try something new. Under the tutelage of Judy Umlas, I have begun giving Grateful Leadership and the Power of ACknowledgment seminars.  I gave my first one at my employer a couple weeks ago and it went over GREAT!   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL; Seminars

106 ~ Thanks Recognition and Acknowledgment
The focus of this episode is one of the key points of Grateful Leadership, the difference between simple thanks, recognition and acknowledgment Don’t get me wrong; Thanks, Recognition, and Acknowledgment all have their place in a well balanced appreciation paradigm within an organization.   In a world where people are leaving perfectly good positions and moving to another company because they don’t feel appreciated These concepts are critical. Let me repeat that: People, good people, are leaving their position, even leaving their company because they don’t feel appreciated   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL;Thanks, Recognition, Acknowledgment

099 ~ You Already Acknowledge
Can you acknowledge someone at the point they first interact with you? Before you have really had any conversation or effect on you? You probably do this more than you think.   What reminded me of this was an interaction with a chat person from Walt Disney World. She started the chat, before we did anything with her name and …” can I spread some pixie dust and make your stay enjoyable?”  The beginning of the interaction made you feel special, Got you thinking about what was on the horizon, about to begin. We do the same thing when we see someone that we know will bring adventure or enjoyment into our lives.   Let's talk about this a bit...   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL;

Do you know that acknowledgment is a two-way street?   The art of accepting an acknowledgment should be practiced too. It is simple, but as they say, simple is not always easy. We are all Acknowledgment Ambassadors spreading the Acknowledgment Message and Its Importance in today’s world and, into the future. But each of us can feel uncomfortable in receiving an acknowledgment Let's take a closer look at this...  Here's the link to the  Dale Carnegie Training of Michigan article quoted in this episode:  http://www.dalecarnegiewaymi.com/2010/11/04/learn-to-give-honest-and-sincere-appreciation/ Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL;

097 ~ Correction By My Mentor - Acknowledge Someone for Who They Are
Welcome to the Art of Grateful Leadership podcast. One of the greatest aspects of being mentored is when the mentor looks deeply and gives the mentee a couple words to take their message to the next level. Most of the time, it isn’t anything new, it’s just the right time to be heard again. I had that experience this week when the author of The Power of Acknowledgment and Grateful Leadership: Using the Power of Acknowledgment to Engage All Your People and Achieve Superior Results, Judith W. Umlas stopped me with just a few words. What were those words? Come in and listen ...   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL; Teenagers

095 ~ Acknowledgment of a Respected Manager
Each of us has those people in our life that has made a profound impact on their career Have you ever thought of acknowledging them?   I think I told everyone about the manager I acknowledged 20+ years after he fired me People probably have two specific questions in their head: Why did you acknowledge someone for firing you? Why did you wait over 20 years? Both of those are valid questions and both of them will have to wait for another podcast Today I want to focus on a more recent management experience... 094 ~ Acknowledgment is a Conscious Choice
In my last episode, I mentioned that I recently had the privilege of Jury Duty The case was not fun, as crime never is.   During my time on the jury I learned a lot about what human beings are capable of and at that time, I had a choice to make.   The choice to look for the good in the world, and to acknowledge it.   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL; The 5 Cs

092 ~ Inspiration During Hard Times
In this episode, I want to turn towards those that inspire us during hard times. And, if you are from Detroit, you probably heard that some of us are heading into some hard times. You see, for those of us that are employed at General Motors,  there have been some white-collar layoffs taking place. And that puts each and every one of us on edge During these times, there  will always be those people that inspire others, no matter what the outcome. One of those people is my co-worker, Bonnie. 090 ~ Life Events Bring Out Acknowledgment
Welcome the Art of Grateful Leadership Podcast This was a hard podcast to put together not because I’m not passionate about the topic but that it hits close to home and it revolves around the topic of someone passing away. 087 ~ Cant Help But Acknowledge
There are some times when you just can’t help acknowledging someone. There was just such a day recently. We were coming to the end of the year and there are a number of initiatives that need to be completed so everyone can head into the holidays with relaxation on their mind One of these was an initiative with visibility all the way up to the top executive in the department There were six applications that needed to be brought up to corporate standards before the end of the year. We started this initiative in April and everyone looked at the goal and rolled their eyes. It was a massive undertaking few people thought we could achieve.   Keywords: #IWorkForGM; Art of Grateful Leadership; Power of Acknowledgment; Grateful Leader; Judith W Umlas; James G Trela; Center for Grateful Leadership; Leadership; Management; Employee Retention; AGL; CGL;
