Episode 100 - The Best Ways to Spend Your Points with Albert Hsieh
Albert Hsieh from @jetalbert is a senior marketing professional and experienced brand strategist with a focus on global brand management, marketing, and commercial strategizing in the aviation industry. He has experience working in JetBlue, China Airlines, the private jet company XOJet, and is the founder of FoxTrot Dash, a fin-tech company that provides recommendations on the best ways to use your points and miles. In this episode, Albert and I discuss when to use cash vs. points on a booking, different strategies for earning points, and how to decide what to do with your hard-earned points so you don’t go into analysis paralysis. If you are new to points and miles, all of this can seem overwhelming. If you’re looking for a no-fee starter card that lets you earn 5x on special rotating categories each month, check out the Chase Freedom Flex. Additionally, if you combine the points with a Chase Sapphire account, you can use all of the combined points for travel to get a higher value out of each point. Remember, if you decide to apply for Chase cards or any other card, never apply directly through Google – always use a friend or creator’s referral link. Episode 99 - Traveling through Puerto Rico with Points with Jen Ruiz
Note: I apologize in advance that the sound gets a little warbly in some places here -- my podcast editor did the best he could, but the wifi kept cutting out in Puerto Rico which messed with our audio. Jen Ruiz from @jenonajetplane is a lawyer turned full-time travel writer and author. She is a 5-time Amazon bestseller, 3-time TEDx speaker and 2-time award winning travel journalist. She documents her adventures on her website, Jen on a Jet Plane. In this episode, Jen and I discuss how to use points and miles to travel to and within Puerto Rico, where she currently resides! This episode is particularly special to me because I actually had my destination wedding in Puerto Rico years ago before I knew about points and miles. We got married in a boutique hotel and one of the most popular ways to book boutique hotels on points is by using Capital One miles. If you are looking for more upgraded travel experiences, check out the Capital One Venture X which comes with lounge access, a $300 travel credit to use through the portal, top tier rental car status with Hertz, and more. Remember, please never ever apply for a credit card through Google. Always use a friend or creator’s links to support them. Episode 98 - The Best Points Resorts in Mexico with Pedro de Alba
Pedro de Alba from @viajandoextra is a international business professional that started the points game just months before the pandemic and is now using the knowledge to travel the world with what he's learned. He’s lived and traveled all over Mexico and grew up predominantly in the Jalisco region. In this episode, Pedro and I discuss some of his favorite Mexican resorts you can book with points. We’re talking about way more than just the Cancun resorts you hear about all the time – we’re covering hotels and resorts in the Yucantan, Mexico City, Baja California, the West Coast, and more! If you are looking to book some all-inclusive vacations in Mexico, Hyatt recently added a lot of new brands to their portfolio including Zoetry, Secrets, Breathless, Dreams, and many others! In addition to the Hyatt cards, you can also transfer points from Chase and Bilt into the Hyatt program at a 1:1 ratio as well! Episode 97 - Insider Tips from a JetBlue Employee with Stella Shon
Stella has been a long-time aviation and points and miles enthusiast, and she currently works in Corporate Communications at JetBlue! Prior to this role, she has freelanced and written full-time for The Points Guy. She can not only tell you all about maximizing points and miles for your dream trips, but from the unique angle working in the aviation industry — and how points and miles are incredibly important to use, even when you get “free” space-available flights from the airline (and its partners)! In this episode, Stella and I dive into the True Blue loyalty program and how you can get some incredible points experiences with JetBlue – everything from cheap $39 flights to experiencing the luxurious JetBlue Mint cabin across the Atlantic. Quick note though – this episode was recorded before the news about the JetBlue and Spirit merger, so we don’t touch on that in this episode. If you are looking to book flights on JetBlue, Chase Ultimate Rewards points transfer to JetBlue as well as many additional hotel and airline partners. The Chase Sapphire Preferred is one of the most popular starter cards for people looking to get into the game of points and miles and that sign-up bonus can cover quite a few JetBlue short-haul flights, especially during the flash sales! Remember, if you decide to apply for the Chase Sapphire Preferred or any other card, never apply directly through Google – always use a friend or creator’s referral link. Episode 90 - Traveling through Europe on $100 per day with Kendyl Grender
Kendyl Grender from @kendyltravels grew up in a family that considered travel "for rich people." Until she studied abroad in 2013, she had only been to 4 states and had never been out of the country. Making just $34,000 a year out of graduate school, she made a commitment to see as much of the world as possible. Since then Kendyl has become a pretty savvy budget traveler, traveling to 14 countries and 20 US states with her husband, Aspen, for less than $18,000 over the past 5 years. She's not a nomad, a vagabond or a backpacker circumnavigating the globe. Instead, Kendyl utilizes budget travel tricks to travel more and inspires others to live life half full, too. In this episode, Kendyl and I discuss how she and her husband were able to take a month off of work and explore Europe for only $4000 out of pocket for the whole month. That includes their flights, accommodations, food, excursions, and everything else! We also discuss some credit cards that gave Kendyl some free nights at different hotels. Some of my favorites are the World of Hyatt, Marriott Bonvoy Boundless, and IHG Rewards cards, which all come with an anniversary free night certificate in addition to all the free nights you can get from the intro bonuses! We discuss flights, hotels and accommodations, food, excursions and more! If you are traveling or moving abroad from the United States, make sure you have a credit card that has no foreign transaction fees. Episode 88 - Visit the Virgin Islands on Points with Niqua
Niqua of @travelingwithniqua is a travel blogger originally from the Virgin Islands. Her travel platform is focused on helping individuals travel more, by sharing budget travel tips, travel tricks and strategies! She has been featured on Travel Noire and has traveled to over 20 countries and 27 states and is currently on a journey to travel to all 50 states. In this episode, Niqua and I discuss how to visit the Virgin Islands on points, the best airline routes, points hotels, excursions, and more! I had the chance to visit the British Virgin Islands myself during a press trip with Bilt last year, and the islands are absolutely incredible! In case you haven’t heard of Bilt, I’m a senior advisor for them and their product makes it easy to earn points on rent without having to pay any fees. They can wire your landlord an ACH payment or mail a physical check, and the points you earn can be transferred to partners like American Airlines, United, Hyatt, and more! Also, while having the Bilt card can help you earn points much faster, you can also earn a lot of free points by completing different challenges in the Bilt app even if you don’t have the card! Episode 85 - Luxury California Hotels with Shaila Arbona
Shaila Arbona from @travelhackingvida began her award travel journey one year ago and in her first year earned over one million points! Shaila wants to spread awareness about the perks of travel hacking so that more women, families and people of color can access opportunities for travel. She’s also a coaching client of mine, and I’m so proud of everything she was able to accomplish in the last year! In this episode, Shaila and I discuss how she earned more than a million points and how she used those points to stay at some incredible luxury resorts in California such as a couple of St. Regis Hotels and the Alila Ventana Big Sur, which can often go for more than $3000 per night! One of the cards that was instrumental in Shaila’s journey was the World of Hyatt card, which lets you earn points towards luxury hotels like the Alila and also helps you to reach Globalist status with Hyatt faster. However, you don’t need Globalist status to enjoy Globalist perks! One thing you can do is ask a Globalist friend to make a Guest of Honor booking for you after you transfer some points into their account, and then you’ll be treated as if you have the Globalist status yourself! If you are interested, I provide the Guest of Honor booking services to my full strategy coaching clients. Episode 84 - How to Find the Best Points Flights with Sanjay Sharma
Sanjay Sharma of @sanjay1 is the head of Product at @pointme, where he leads the development of products that are helping thousands of people travel better with points. Sanjay himself has used points to travel to over 150 countries! In this episode, Sanjay and I discuss some of the main challenges people have when they search for good flight award availability, how to save points when you book flights, and some of the ways point.me makes all of this much much easier than it has been in the past. One of the great things about Point.me is that you can actually filter results by the type of points you have, whether it’s Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One, Bilt, or something else! Having a variety of cards that work with multiple transfer patterns is a key strategy for when you are leveling up your award travel game. Remember: when you’re ready to apply for your next card that earns flexible points, whether it’s a Chase Ink card, Capital One Venture X, Amex Gold or Platinum, or Citi Premier, don’t use Google. Episode 79 - Earning 2 Million Hilton Points Passively Each Year with Ronnie Dunston
Note: contains some adult language Ronnie Dunston from @ronniedunston has traveled to more than 100 countries and has been in the points game since 2013. He currently works full time for the federal government as an IT training specialist and he teaches as an adjunct professor in the college of business and technology and also teaches people how to travel through his Tricks to Travel course and Facebook group. In this episode, Ronnie and I discuss how he earns more than 2 million Hilton points almost passively each year without churning credit cards -- they get a few through referrals each year but largely earn their points by leveraging the Hilton Grand Vacations program, and haven't paid for a hotel in years. Episode 78 - Paris + Public Transit Travel Tricks with Madeline Sall
Madeline Sall from @madelinesall began her points & miles journey in 2013 with her consultant job and had to get a little more strategic after she left that job & didn't have corporate expenses on her credit cards all the time. Now, she uses her points & miles to attend concerts in other cities & plan last-minute redemptions without planning every day of her trips. She believes that the best use of points & miles is the one you're actually going to use & not always the one that has the best cost per point. In this episode, Madeline and I talk about a points trip she took to Paris, and how using public transit in Europe -- and really most places where it's available -- can save so much money and sanity, and we discuss some different tricks for navigating public transit while traveling. To offset the costs of public transit, I'd recommend using a card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve or Capital One card with purchase eraser. Episode 76 - How to Find Award Program Loopholes with Bethany Walsh
Bethany Walsh from @bougiemiles is one of the OG women in the points and miles world, teaching us how to be bougie on a budget and maximize luxury travel for fewer points, dollars, and credit cards. Her award travel style is focused on helping you travel the world in the most luxurious way possible while keeping spend to a minimum. In this episode, Bethany and I discuss some of the most luxurious trips she's ever taken, and her unique approach to finding loopholes in different award programs, which lets her maximize rewards past the limits of what most people can imagine. Bethany and I also discuss her love for casino hotels, which is one of the areas where it's easy to get a lot of luxury without much money or effort. One of my favorite casino program tricks is status matching, especially between Hyatt and MGM. If you have Hyatt Explorist or Globalist, you can match to MGM Gold status, which means you don't have to pay any resort fees when you book directly through MGM's website. Best of all, when you link your Hyatt and MGM accounts, your MGM stays count as Hyatt elite nights! If you're looking to get a jump on your Hyatt elite nights, the World of Hyatt personal card comes with 5 automatic elite nights, a free night certificate, and many additional perks. One of the strategies Samantha discusses in the episode is using Citi points to wipe the cost of your cruise off of your statement credits. My favorite Citi card is the Citi Premier, which comes with a variety of great perks, including the ability to transfer points to Turkish Miles and Smiles, where you can book flights to anywhere in the US - including Alaska and Hawaii - for only 7500 points one way per person. It's a great card to have, especially for families who are looking to save on domestic travel. If you are interested in applying for the Citi premier to save on Disney tickets and or flights, be sure to use a friend or creator's referral links. Episode 73 - How to Visit Uganda on Points with Miguel Rueda
Miguel Rueda of @travelsergeant just started learning about points/miles during the pandemic, and now he has accumulated over 1 million points in about 18 months and has flown on some bucket list airline products such as QSuites, Lufthansa FIrst Class, and ANA First Class. In this episode, Miguel and I talk about one of his first luxury points redemptions, which was flying QSuites to Uganda and his incredible experince with visiting the Ugandan national parks to see the gorillas. We also discuss some tips for how to book hotels, rental cars, and excursions when traveling to Uganda. If you're interested in earning a million points or more in a short time, one of the best ways is to earn points quickly is by adding business cards into your wallet, and qualifying for business cards is easier than most people think. One of my favorites is the Chase Ink Business Cash card which has no annual fee, a high intro bonus, and lets you earn 5x on internet, phone, cable, and office supply stores. That means, you can pick up gift cards to pretty much any store from Staples and get 5x points! If you're interested in signing up for the Chase Ink Business Cash, make sure you use a friend or creator's referral links. Episode 72 - The Best and Worst Credit Card Luck Ever with Kelsi and Devan
Kelsi and Devan from @pointsisters have been traveling the world on points since the early '90s. They have lived in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Sri Lanka, Spain, the USA and have traveled to many more. Now based in San Diego, they help others curate once-in-a-lifetime trips using points and miles. When they aren’t traveling, they are sitting on the San Diego beaches, soaking up the sun! In this episode, we talk about good luck and bad luck when it comes to points and miles -- everything from what to do if your credit cards get shut down due to fraudulent charges to getting rejected for new cards up to how to find award space and take amazing trips using your points! Speaking of good credit card luck, did you know you can check if you're targeted for special offers like extra 5x bonus categories at www.chase.com/mybonus? This past quarter, I received targeted offers to earn 5x for spending at restaurants or Amazon.com with three different co-branded cards: World of Hyatt, IHG, and United. Many people reported seeing the same offers on their Southwest cards as well! In this episode, Kris and I discuss all things Singapore Airlines. We discuss how to earn points, different routes, redemption sweet spots, and more! You can use Chase, American Express, Citi, or Capital One. Some of the fan favorites for each of these banks are the Chase Sapphire Preferred, Amex Gold, Citi Premier, and Capital One Venture X. Cinneah El-Amin of @fly.nanced is on a mission to equip her audience with the tools to fly financially free, so they can build wealth and do the things that bring them joy, like travel! Her approach to wealth building is based on her lived experience, and she has been featured on Good Morning America, CNBC, Travel Noir, Real Simple, Black Enterprise, and many other channels. In this episode, Cinneah and I discuss some travel tricks that don't necessarily involve opening credit cards, and also a behind-the-scenes look at Cinneah's experience on the Product development team at American Express! If you want to get into points and miles, but don't yet have a 720 credit score, one of the best ways to start dabbling in the points world is through stacking and using shopping portals. Episode 67 - Brazil Travel Tricks and Military Benefits with Mark White
Mark White from @armyaggie03 is an Army officer, Texas Aggie, and world traveler having visited 87 countries with aspirations to visit them all. In this episode, Mark and I discuss different credit card and travel benefits that military families have access to, and an app that Mark used to fund his trip to Brazil while earning points and getting reimbursed for the spend. For any military families who are able to take advantage of the Military Lending Act, check out some of the premium credit cards such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, American Express Platinum, and Capital One Venture X. While these cards often have higher annual fees, they are offset by the benefits and travel perks that you receive with each card. Additionally, the Military Lending Act can help waive the annual fees on these cards! Episode 64 - More Creative Ways to Earn Points with Eric Manaog
Eric Manaog from @pointsandtravels and his wife Mary Ann migrated from the Philippines to Connecticut 2004 with their 3 kids and have embraced the world of traveling for next to no cost using points and miles. In this episode, Eric and I discuss how his family was able to earn millions of points quickly so that they could travel in business class by purchasing different gift cards. We also discuss which of the methods mentioned in this episode are no longer available, and which ones he's still able to do today. One of the most popular ways to earn a lot of points by purchasing gift cards is with the Chase Ink Business Cash card. This card earns 5x points at office supply stores and with other categories such as cable, phone, internet, and more. Staples often runs sales where they waive the activation fees on Visa gift cards. That means, you could use a Chase Ink Business Cash card to purchase a fee-free Visa gift card and then use that Visa gift card almost anywhere, effectively earning 5x on anything! As Eric mentions in this episode, you don't need a large business to qualify for cards like this. Side gigs such as tutoring, babysitting, UberDriving, selling on Ebay, and many other part-time activities have qualified people for business credit cards, which have fantastic perks! Remember, never ever apply for a credit card on Google. Always use a friend or creator's link to apply to help us earn points or commissions.
