Dr. Joseph Mercola with Steven Munatones: The History of Blood Flow Moderation Training

STORY AT-A-GLANCE
  • Blood Flow Moderation (BFM) training was developed in Japan by Dr. Yoshiaki Sato in 1966. There, it’s known as KAATSU, which translates into “additional pressure”
  • KAATSU, known more generically as Blood Flow Modification, was introduced outside of Japan by Steven Munatones after a 13-year-long mentorship by Sato
  • Aside from dramatically improving muscle tone, BFM is also a wonderful tool for post-surgical rehabilitation, allowing you to regain physical function in a fraction of the time that you would normally anticipate
  • KAATSU is very safe, even for those with cardiovascular issues, and can also benefit those who are bedridden or paraplegic
  • The original KAATSU device became commercially available in 2006 and was quite large, heavy and bulky, with a $16,600 price tag. Since then, the technology has improved, gotten much smaller and is far less expensive

Gamal Awad Talks KAATSU

The husband-and-wife duo of U.S. Marines Major Gamal Awad and 2-time Olympian Hawley Bennett talked about their use of KAATSU with retired Navy SEAL captain and KAATSU Master Specialist John Doolittle.

They regularly use the original KAATSU Nano unit with their KAATSU Air Bands.

Awad and Hawley have used KAATSU to help with their rehabilitation from numerous injuries - all quite serious from broken pelvis bones to broken backs. They also use KAATSU in the course of their daily exercise routines. Awad talks of his daily need for KAATSU while Olympian Hawley talked about her own KAATSU journey in the podcast above.

Awad is shown below on the day of his most recent injury - and soon thereafter during his recovery with his pink KAATSU Air Bands on his arms.

KAATSU Skin Beauty From An Aesthetician's Perspective
KAATSU has been used by skin care professionals and make-up artists for decades in Japan.

Beauty care experts and aestheticians who cater to both young women and older women understand how increased blood flow in their clients' skin and face helps them on a number of wellness and cosmetic perspectives.

In 2006, researchers from the University of Tokyo and the Tokyo Metropolitan University studied what was anecdotally known by the KAATSU Beauty specialists. They published a formal study project titled,
Effect of knee extension exercise with KAATSU on forehead cutaneous blood flow in healthy young and middle-aged women.

In this study of women (average age 34.5 years), they concluded that the cutaneous blood circulation (circulation and blood supply of the skin) in the foreheads of test subjects were improved with unloaded unilateral knee extension exercises (i.e., 3 sets of 15 repetitions taking less than 75 seconds per set with a single KAATSU Air Band on their left upper leg without weights or resistance).

The women performed the three-set series of exercises twice - for the first time, they did it without KAATSU, and for the second time with KAATSU with the KAATSU Air Band inflated initially to 140 SKU and ending eventually at 200 SKU.

The blood flow in the foreheads of women was calculated from the blood velocity and red blood cell mass that was determined by laser blood flowmetry.

This conclusion of how blood circulation in a KAATSU user's forehead is improved with relatively easy leg exercises that focus on the quadriceps and hamstrings seems either impossible or illogical.

While the KAATSU users experienced no changes in blood lactate and hematocrit (i.e., volume percentage of red blood cells in blood), their norepinephrine levels increased. Norepinephrine is a naturally occurring chemical that acts as a stress hormone because the brain perceives that a stressful event has occurred.

This natural biohack created by the KAATSU leg exercises helps improve the subjects' forehead cutaneous blood flow. The beauty care experts and aestheticians in Japan know that if KAATSU lower body exercises helps improve circulation and blood supply of the skin of the face, then KAATSU upper body exercises also do the same.

Dave Carlson Talks KAATSU (Part 2)

Dave Carlson Talks KAATSU (Part 2)

Coach Dave Carlson gives daily shelter-in-place workouts to 15-16 year old freshmen and sophomores from Los Alamitos High School in Southern California. They all log in via their laptops or smartphones and are able to hear and see each other and their coach online.

All high schools are closed and all sports practices and competitions are cancelled throughout Southern California in an attempt to limit the impact of the coronavirus (COVID-19) to the local population - a strategy that is becoming more and more widespread throughout the United States and many other countries.

Carlson gives his student-athletes a series of upper body sets, lower body sets, core sets, and a technical skill workout - virtually as they participate on their smartphones and laptops. The entire workout is enhanced with KAATSU equipment in order to make their workouts as effective and efficient as possible.

The students gather online in the early afternoon and have 5 minutes to catch up with together as they see everyone on the Google Meet platform. They laugh, share stories, and make each other smile.

The virtual shelter-in-place workouts start with stretching exercises. Then Carlson goes through a series of upper body sets to strengthen the forearms, biceps, triceps, deltoids and lats. The entire workouts are done with either their KAATSU arm bands or KAATSU leg bands on.

He also does some core work including balancing exercises and lower body exercises including squats and lunges with the KAATSU bands.

He even adds in technical skills sets that teach the fundamentals of shooting a water polo ball. The students end the shelter-in-home workouts by themselves, laughing and enjoying each other's company—virtually—with no end in sight as they adapt to their new normal.

Will Branum Talks KAATSU

Will Branum Talks KAATSU

A former U.S. Navy SEAL with 26 years of service, William Branum is the founder of Naked Warrior Recovery.

At an early age in his home state of Mississippi, Branum knew he wanted to be part of a team that would push him beyond whatever limits he thought he had and still enjoy the outdoors and all it had to offer. He charged forward and became an Eagle Scout and joined the Navy immediately after high school graduation. After graduating from the famed Navy SEAL Training (BUD/S Class 208), he was stationed in Virginia Beach, then San Diego, and finally Oahu where he served on multiple SEAL Teams, taught SEAL Sniper School, and deployed around the globe.

As with too many veterans, Branum suffered from numerous physical injuries and psychological symptoms that negatively impacted his well-being and quality of life.

He talked about his use of KAATSU at home and in the Pacific Ocean, his company and THC-free CBD in the KAATSU At Home interview series with retired Navy SEAL captain John Doolittle and Steven Munatones.
