In Conversation with Simone Simmons: Narcissism, women in the social media space and female influencers

In Conversation with Simone Simmons: Narcissism, women in the social media space and female influencers

In this episode, I chat with  @simonesquared   @simonesimmo3170  about women in the social media space.

We cover a LOT. Some of the topics we speak about include:

- Narcissism

- "Pick me" culture

- Internalised misogyny

- Cancel culture

- Self-help content: how female influencers who produce this kind of content are perceived compared to male creators

  - The issue with audiences pitting female influencers against each other

 - Whether removing controversial figures off of social media platforms is effective

 - The false sense of female empowerment that certain online subcultures present (i.e. "femcel" culture/ "female manipulators" and associated trends)

Overcoming Obstacles as an Olympian with Bendere Oboya

Overcoming Obstacles as an Olympian with Bendere Oboya

The guest this episode is the lovely Bendere Oboya. Bendere is traditionally a 400m athlete, but has her sights set on the 800m as well. She started her athletics career relatively late for most - 16 - however, in a short space of time, she has become a phenomen - going from a 60 seconds plus 400m athlete to Commonwealth Youth Champion in 2017, 2018 Commonwealth Games representative on the Gold Coast and then the highest placed teenager at the 2019 World Championships. Competing at the Olympics last year was a massive feat for Bendere as she continues her journey. This episode, we talk all about starting her athletics career, her road to the Olympics, being a black woman in Australia, facing comparison with Cathy Freeman and how she’s gained enough confidence to call herself her own role model.

She also answers the questions some of you sent across for her!

The University of Sydney vs University in America with Elena Cheung

The University of Sydney vs University in America with Elena Cheung

This episode I speak with Elena Cheung, a growing youtuber and student at the University of Sydney. However, Elena’s experiences are more unique than your typical university student. Growing up in Singapore and attending an American school there, Elena initially went to the University of California, San Diego after high school, studying at college in America. After roughly a year studying there, Elena moved to Australia during lockdown last year to study a bachelor of law/commerce at USYD. This episode, we talk all about why she made the move to USYD, the differences between tertiary education in Australia vs America, living alone in another country and more. It was a pleasure speaking with her and getting to find out more about her experiences. So with that, let’s get right into it.
