Episode 197: The Cost of People Pleasing

Episode 197: The Cost of People Pleasing

In this episode, we dive deep into the intricate dynamics of people-pleasing, a topic that arose during a recent bridal session with a bride in the thick of her wedding planning. As she experiences the overwhelming stress of preparations and the pressure to keep everyone happy, we reflect on the pervasive theme of people-pleasing and its profound effects on individual well-being and relationships.

We explore the tangible costs of people-pleasing—resentment being a major one. When we silence our own needs in favor of accommodating others, we risk building bitterness that secretly undermines our connections. The initial sense of peace that comes from agreeing often masks deeper issues; relationships built on superficial harmony lack true intimacy.

Ultimately, reclaiming our space and identity in relationships is a gradual but rewarding process. By engaging with our emotions and fostering a sense of safety within ourselves, we can become our own best advocates.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

The cost of people-pleasing

Shifting out of people-pleasing

Reclaiming your own voice

Episode 196: Soften

Episode 196: Soften

In this episode, I dive into the concept of "softening," particularly relevant as we navigate the challenges of wedding planning amid the turbulence of our daily lives.

As we explore the idea of softening, I recognize that both the news and the wedding planning process can become overwhelming. The notion of choosing to soften oneself in the face of stress is a powerful practice worth discussing. When faced with tension—whether from disappointment, conflict, or logistical challenges—our instinct often pushes us toward rigidity. However, I propose that embodying a softer stance is not a sign of weakness but an approach that can foster resilience and creativity.

This conscious decision to soften allows for a tender interaction with our own experiences and fosters a forgiving attitude toward life’s unpredictability. I highlight how crucial it is to cultivate a more sacred stance toward our ongoing experiences, focusing on how each moment feels rather than fixating on external validation. Softening becomes a powerful tool for remaining present, naturally reducing the internal struggles associated with unmet expectations.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

The power of softening

Having a gentler approach to life

Navigating your journey with love

Episode 195: Harmony

Episode 195: Harmony

In this episode, I delve into the nuanced landscape of harmony within relationships. Many newlyweds two years into their marriages often find themselves grappling with unexpected friction and static. It's a common realization that the post-wedding phase comes with its own set of challenges, leading couples to reflect on their expectations.

As we traverse through harmony, disharmony, and the necessity of repair, I aim to illuminate the vital understanding that conflict isn’t a sign of failure. It’s not a failure sign but rather a point of reference.

This leads to the critical concept that successful navigation through these turbulent phases hinges on our ability to engage in repair — the lifeline of any healthy relationship. I share personal anecdotes, highlighting that even in my own marriage, periods of disagreement existed, and those disagreements are not indications of a weak bond but rather natural occurrences.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

Embracing disharmony

The art of repair

Riding the cycle of relationships

Episode 194: Fragile Friendship Origins

Episode 194: Fragile Friendship Origins

In this episode, I delve into a sensitive and often overlooked topic affecting brides: the fragility of female friendships during wedding planning.

Over the past year, I've noticed recurring themes in bridal sessions where the tension and disappointment that brides feel often stem not only from wedding logistics but from deeply rooted friendships that appear strained or falter during this pivotal moment. Many brides approach me seeking advice primarily regarding conflicts with their mothers, but what emerges through our conversations is a different concern—the emotional weight of friendship dynamics.

It’s okay to feel sad when friendships falter, especially during such a significant life occasion as a wedding. This emotion does not denote brokenness; rather, it serves as a pivotal moment of insight into one's relational history and patterns. Embracing this awareness can lead to transformative shifts in how brides approach their friendships—not just for their current lives but extending into future relationships as well. For those navigating this challenging time, know that you are not alone, and there is an opportunity for healing, growth, and ultimately, bridal bliss.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

Unpacking friendship expectations

Emotional regression and weddings

Healing through awareness

Episode 193: Want What You Have

Episode 193: Want What You Have

In this mini episode, I dive into the concept of "wanting what you have," a vital mindset shift that can significantly enhance your life, particularly if you're navigating the complexities of wedding planning.

In a world where the pressure to accumulate more and appear unique can feel overwhelming, especially in the context of the wedding industrial complex, it's easy to become preoccupied with what you lack rather than appreciating what you already possess. This episode serves as a gentle reminder to reorient your focus, especially during a time that’s often fueled by consumerism and comparison.

It involves re-engaging with and truly valuing the items, experiences, and relationships we've already cultivated. By consciously choosing to appreciate our partners and the commitments we’ve made, we can maintain a deeper connection and a sense of joy.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

The pressure of wedding planning

Embracing appreciation over wanting

Episode 192: It’s a Mirror

Episode 192: It’s a Mirror

In this episode, I delve into the profound metaphor of viewing your wedding as a reflective surface that unveils various aspects of your personal journey. This episode challenges the conventional understanding of weddings merely as events, positioning them instead as opportunities for intimate self-discovery and insight.

The essence of this discussion is rooted in the idea that our partners and significant life events mirror our inner selves, prompting us to confront the facets of our identity that require attention and growth.

We dive into the noise of societal expectations surrounding weddings—what is perceived as timeless versus trendy, traditional versus modern—and I urge couples to tune into their inner voices instead of merely following external influences. Every choice made during the planning process—whether it be about vows, venues, or the overall feel of the celebration—offers insights into the values that truly matter to you. These decisions are more than logistical considerations; they are clues about personal identity and desires.

Episode 191: Savoring the Good

Episode 191: Savoring the Good

In this episode, I reflect on the concept of "Savoring the Good," inspired by a recent family celebration—the 50th anniversary of my parents. This milestone event not only called for a grand celebration but also brought to light the joys and stresses of planning a gathering with many moving parts.

How can we allow ourselves to truly experience and absorb these joyous moments while they unfold? How do you focus on being present and fully engaged in the experience, rather than letting the good times slip away unnoticed.

It’s about creating a home for joy within our lives, so we can nurture these moments and carry them with us long after the event has passed. The essence of this practice is not just about the events themselves but about cultivating a deeper capacity to find and hold onto joy, ultimately impacting how we experience our lives as we navigate the complexities of life, love, and celebrations.

Episode 189: Sibling Strife

Episode 189: Sibling Strife

Today I dive into the often complex and nuanced dynamics that arise among siblings, particularly in the context of wedding planning. While we've previously discussed relationships with parents and friends, it’s clear that sibling interactions offer a unique layer of emotional complexity that can surface around life-changing events like weddings.

When returning home for family gatherings, many of us regress to our childhood identities, paving the way for old dynamics to resurface as we prepare for our big day. Whether you’re the responsible sibling, the baby of the family, or perhaps the perceived black sheep, these entrenched roles can influence how siblings relate to one another during wedding planning. This leads to the exploration of expectations—what siblings anticipate during this significant moment in your life versus what is realistically possible.

I extend a reminder to those who find themselves overwhelmed with sibling-related stress during wedding planning: you are not alone. The emotional landmines that can arise are often tender and challenging to navigate. Weddings offer a unique chance to redefine relationships, and I hope my insights help you create a celebration that is meaningful to you and your loved ones.

Episode 188: Parent Projection

Episode 188: Parent Projection

In this episode, I dive into the complex dynamics of parent projections during the wedding planning process, a recurring theme that frequently leaves brides feeling overwhelmed and conflicted.

During weddings—an event steeped in identity and familial legacy—these feelings often manifest as parents attempt to impose their desires and anxieties onto their children. Whether it's a mother obsessing over centerpieces or a father fixated on the guest list, these reactions often stem from deeper issues related to control, societal expectations, and unfulfilled dreams. It’s critical to recognize that the conflict typically has less to do with logistical details and more to do with underlying emotional themes that the family has yet to address.

Ultimately, this conversation is about honoring both the feelings of the parents and the desires of the couple. It’s a delicate dance of empathy, with the recognition that a wedding represents a significant transition—not just for the couple, but also for their families. The goal is not to blame or dismiss parental behavior, but rather to identify the sources of their emotions and provide a framework for understanding and addressing them constructively.

Episode 187: Radical Acceptance

In this episode, I delve into the transformative practice of radical acceptance, a concept that has profoundly enriched my experience and understanding of life's complexities, especially during the overwhelming journey of wedding planning.

Radical acceptance is about meeting our reality precisely as it is, with kindness and compassion. It’s so important to acknowledge difficult feelings without judgment and to understand that it’s not about liking our circumstances but rather accepting them. This acceptance paves the way for deeper emotional resilience and growth, allowing us to witness our circumstances without the weight of resistance.

Ultimately, my hope is for you to embrace this practice of radical acceptance in your life, particularly during the wedding planning process, to cultivate a sense of peace and presence that allows you to genuinely show up for yourselves and your loved ones.

Episode 185: When Friends Don’t Show Up

In this episode, we explore the theme of friendship dynamics, particularly in the context of wedding planning. Recently, I've been hearing from numerous brides grappling with feelings of disappointment and hurt as friends fail to RSVP or attend key events such as bridal showers or bachelorette parties.

We dive into the complicated feelings that arise when those who usually exhibit unwavering support seem to fall short during such significant moments. As I speak with these brides, we unpack the deeper implications of their feelings, which often connect to their overall approach to friendships. Many of them grapple with the realization that their efforts to show up for others may have created an unspoken expectation that this generosity would be reciprocated—a kind of emotional “investment” that now feels unfulfilled.

I want to remind you to honor the complexity of the bridal journey—a time filled with deep emotions, both joyful and daunting. By engaging with feelings of disappointment and reframing them within a broader context of friendship, brides can foster healthier relationships moving forward and find solace in the connections that do withstand the changes life brings.

Episode 184: Beginner’s Mind - Bridal Edition

In this episode, I delve into the concept of a beginner's mind, through the lens of the bridal experience. I reflect on the importance of approaching wedding planning with a sense of openness and curiosity, much like a child exploring something new for the first time.

This perspective encourages brides to embrace the journey rather than being bogged down by checklists or societal expectations. I share how the pressure to create a "perfect" wedding can often lead to disappointment and stress when reality doesn’t align with preconceived notions.

The journey of being a bride is inherently a first-time experience for most, which can be daunting. As I emphasize the importance of treating oneself with kindness and gentleness, I encourage brides to allow themselves the space to make mistakes. Each misstep is an opportunity for growth, and recognizing this can alleviate some of the pressure associated with planning a wedding.

Episode 180: 10 Reasons You Should Skip the Bridal Party

In this episode, we delve into a topic that is often considered taboo in the world of weddings: the reasons why one might choose to skip having a bridal party altogether.

While traditionally, the bridal party is seen as an essential part of wedding planning, I feel compelled to explore an alternative viewpoint based on numerous conversations I've had with brides who have experienced the overwhelm and complexity that a bridal party can introduce. Drawing from personal experiences and feedback from couples, this episode seeks to provide a fresh perspective on wedding planning—one that prioritizes emotional well-being amidst the chaos of preparations.

Whether or not you choose to maintain the tradition of a bridal party, the most essential takeaway is to prioritize your personal happiness and emotional health throughout your wedding planning. It's a time for celebration and love, and my goal in this episode is to help you find what truly feels right for you and your partner.

Episode 179: Notes on Leaving

Episode 179: Notes on Leaving

Today we dive into the emotionally charged themes of broken engagements and the difficult choices that accompany them. Typically, brides in these situations feel conflicted, torn between staying and going, driven by a combination of anxiety and intuition.

In navigating the emotional whirlwind of grief, guilt, and the potential loss of identity, I encourage you to acknowledge the power of your own clarity. Sometimes, what individuals truly need during such turbulent times is validation, encouragement, and support, rather than help in making the decision itself. The engagement process often amplifies pivotal questions about personal values, finances, family dynamics, and mutual life goals, bringing these previously veiled issues to the surface.

The key message is one of empowerment—encouraging openness in sharing experiences, trusting oneself, and prioritizing emotional well-being during turbulent times. For anyone currently grappling with the decision to end an engagement, the takeaway is clear: you are not alone, and the emotional journey, while challenging, is navigable with self-trust and support.

Episode 178: Weddings and Funerals

In this episode, I delve into the profound parallels between weddings and funerals. Just as funerals commemorate loss and bring people together in grief, weddings unite us in joy and hope, bridging the emotional spectrum of human experience. Both events, albeit on opposite sides of that spectrum, are rituals that invite introspection and connection among all attendees.

It's crucial for every bride, regardless of where they are in the wedding planning journey, to appreciate that a wedding transcends personal significance. It’s an occasion that embodies community, connection, and shared experiences that go far beyond individual desires.

The moment of uniting friends, family, and colleagues into one space—especially in our increasingly digital world—is incredibly poignant. It’s a rare occasion where all these individuals can come together to celebrate, creating a vibrant tapestry of memories that will be cherished for years to come.

Episode 176: Why Can’t You Apologize?

In this episode, we dive into the complex and often challenging realm of apologies, exploring their significance in wedding planning and, more broadly, in personal relationships.

We discuss the essential role that apologizing plays not just during the wedding process, but throughout our lives—especially in deep, meaningful connections such as marriages, friendships, and family relationships. Understanding the architecture of an apology—acknowledgment, regret, responsibility, and a request for forgiveness—can illuminate the emotional hurdles faced by those who struggle with it.

People who struggle to apologize are usually grappling with their own insecurities and fears of shame. I explain how the act of admitting wrongdoing can be psychologically taxing for these individuals, leading them to avoid the emotional turmoil that an apology might provoke.

Acknowledging past struggles with anxiety and the growth made since then can create a more compassionate narrative, not just for oneself but also for those observing. This approach encourages openness about one's journey, facilitating deeper understanding and appreciation from loved ones.

Episode 174: How to Feel Less Crazy

Episode 174: How to Feel Less Crazy

In this episode, I aim to return to the core premise of understanding how to feel less "crazy" amidst emotional upheaval.

The universal feelings of uncertainty, indecision, and pressure during wedding planning can leave individuals feeling disoriented. Whether it’s long-established couples contemplating divorce or newly engaged brides who find themselves spiraling in a sea of choices, this episode’s insights aim to provide clarity and assurance.

The antidote to feeling overwhelmed is to embrace the multiplicity of our emotions and thoughts. It’s common to seek a singular, definitive feeling of certainty—especially when making decisions like choosing a wedding dress or venue. However, the reality is that it’s normal to hold conflicting feelings simultaneously. I encourage listeners to acknowledge this emotional duality without guilt. Instead of striving for a consensus within oneself, we can honor the diverse range of feelings we possess. This acceptance can lead to greater calmness and clarity in decision-making.

What you’ll learn from this episode:

Embracing the chaos of feelings

The importance of multiplicity

Acknowledging your conflicting feelings

Episode 173: Play, Grow and Dream

Episode 173: Play, Grow and Dream

In this episode, we dive into the final part of our series on the eight essential dates, focusing on the concepts of play, growth, and dreams. We begin with the essential importance of play and adventure in relationships, particularly for couples who may find themselves 10 to 20 years into their partnership, missing out on the spontaneity and joy that initially defined their connection.

As we transition into the seventh date, the focus shifts to growth—both personal and spiritual. I emphasize the significance of not growing apart but rather nurturing a shared journey of purpose and values. Couples are encouraged to explore their individual and joint aspirations, discuss their guiding values, and identify ways to support each other’s personal growth.

Concluding our series, we dive deeply into the eighth date—dreams. This conversation is vital for creating a sense of intimacy and support within a relationship. I guide couples through the exploration of their dreams, whether they relate to career ambitions, family plans, or personal hobbies. This series ultimately serves as an invitation for couples to embark on a journey of reflection and connection, reminding them that meaningful conversations can lead to significant transformations in their relationships.

Episode 171: Foundations

In this episode, we dive into the principles of relationship building through the framework offered by the Gottman Institute in their book "Eight Dates," exploring the foundations necessary for a successful partnership. Over the next three episodes, we will focus on these essential conversations, beginning with the critical themes of trust and conflict.

Trust, which is fundamental, is built over time through consistent, small actions that reflect care and reliability, rather than grand gestures. Commitment acts as the glue, reinforcing the trust between partners and emphasizing the decision to choose each other every day, even amidst challenges.

I encourage couples to engage in meaningful conversations about what trust and commitment look like in their lives—asking questions about personal histories, triggers related to trust, and how they can nurture each other’s sense of security.

Episode 169: Planning Burnout

Episode 169: Planning Burnout

In this episode, I'm diving deep into the complex world of wedding planning, particularly focused on the burnout many brides experience as they juggle their preparations alongside demanding careers and vibrant social lives.

The challenge of integrating wedding planning into already busy schedules can feel monumental, leading to exhaustion and overwhelm when trying to manage the myriad tasks involved. Many brides find themselves lost in a whirlwind of to-dos, from attending other weddings to engaging in group chats about wedding details, which can create a sense of chaos rather than progress.

I share practical tips to help couples navigate the planning process with ease. Creating timelines and setting milestones will help manage expectations and activities efficiently. I also discuss the necessity of delegation, especially for more mundane tasks, allowing couples to focus on the essential parts of planning that require their attention and emotional investment. This division of labor prevents burnout and ensures that the big picture doesn’t get lost amidst the details.

Using time blocking for wedding planning

Episode 168: Worse Case Scenarios

Episode 168: Worse Case Scenarios

In this episode, I delve into the often unspoken fears surrounding wedding planning, focusing specifically on the concept of worst-case scenarios.

After reflecting on a recent conversation with a bride, it struck me how commonly these worries manifest, creating an atmosphere of anxiety and stress for those preparing for what should be a joyous occasion. From concerns about unpredictable weather to familial tensions, the anxiety surrounding a wedding can lead to excessive spending and compulsive planning, detracting from the excitement of the event.

Walking through the worst-case scenarios allows us to strip away the layers of fear. What do you do if it rains? You create a backup plan. What happens if emotions run high on the big day? You learn to embrace those feelings instead of fearing them. This practice doesn't just mitigate anxiety; it fosters a sense of strength and stability as you prepare for one of life's most significant milestones.

Episode 166: How to Pick an Officiant

In this episode, we are talking about the crucial topic of selecting the right officiant for your wedding—something I’m surprisingly passionate about.

As someone who has officiated numerous weddings, I understand the profound honor and responsibility that comes with this role. It's essential to ensure that the officiant you choose aligns perfectly with you as a couple, capturing the unique essence of your relationship and the atmosphere you desire for your special day.

Your wedding ceremony should be carefully crafted to transcend the celebration itself. I stress how pivotal it is for the officiant to support you and your partner while gracefully fading into the background. This ensures that the focus remains solely on you and the love you are celebrating, rather than on the officiant's desire for attention.

Episode 164: Visit Yourself

Episode 164: Visit Yourself

In this episode, I dive into the crucial concept of "visiting yourself," a phrase that surfaced during a unique dental experience I had. Amid the haze of laughing gas while undergoing a tooth extraction, I felt a profound disconnect from my body, which led to a sudden clarity: the need for individuals, especially brides, to reconnect with their authentic selves during the turbulent wedding planning process.

The wedding planning journey is often fraught with anxiety and societal pressure. For many women, the transition from being a woman to a bride, and potentially to a wife and mother, brings an overwhelming flood of external influences. It isn’t uncommon for brides to feel that their worth lies in achieving an unrealistic ideal, whether through aesthetic perfection or flawless event execution.

I explore how these pressures lead to a frantic pursuit of approval—from relatives, friends, and especially from the curated imagery on social media platforms. When caught in this cycle, it becomes all too easy to lose sight of personal instincts and desires, drowning in a sea of external expectations.

Episode 157: People Don't Show Up for Me

In this episode, I dive into the emotional landscape surrounding the experiences of brides who feel let down by their social circles leading up to their weddings.

Inspired by conversations with several brides who have shared their stories with me, I focus on the feelings of devastation and disappointment that arise when friends and family fail to show up for significant events like bridal showers and bachelorette parties. These moments are supposed to be filled with celebration, yet for some, they illuminate the stark reality of not receiving the support they had hoped for, making their social circle—or lack thereof—feel more pronoun.

By flipping this thought, we can consider the possibility that perhaps we are not showing up for ourselves. I emphasize how important it is to recognize instances in our lives when we prioritize others at the expense of our needs. Through self-reflection, many find that their overextension often stems from an expectation of similar energy and care in return, creating a cycle of disappointment. It’s crucial to evaluate whether these expectations are both realistic and helpful.
