Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 22

Psalm 22New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 22Plea for Deliverance from Suffering and HostilityTo the leader: according to The Deer of the Dawn. A Psalm of David.

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
    Why are you so far from helping me, from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer;
    and by night but find no rest.

Yet you are holy,
    enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In you our ancestors trusted;
    they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they cried and were saved;
    in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

But I am a worm and not human,
    scorned by others and despised by the people.
All who see me mock me;
    they sneer at me; they shake their heads;
“Commit your cause to the Lord; let him deliver—
    let him rescue the one in whom he delights!”

Yet it was you who took me from the womb;
    you kept me safe on my mother’s breast.
10 On you I was cast from my birth,
    and since my mother bore me you have been my God.
11 Do not be far from me,
    for trouble is near,
    and there is no one to help.

12 Many bulls encircle me;
    strong bulls of Bashan surround me;
13 they open wide their mouths at me,
    like a ravening and roaring lion.

14 I am poured out like water,
    and all my bones are out of joint;
my heart is like wax;
    it is melted within my breast;
15 my mouth[
a] is dried up like a potsherd,
    and my tongue sticks to my jaws;
    you lay me in the dust of death.

16 For dogs are all around me;
    a company of evildoers encircles me;
they bound my hands and feet.[b]
17 I can count all my bones.
They stare and gloat over me;
18 they divide my clothes among themselves,
    and for my clothing they cast lots.

19 But you, O Lord, do not be far away!
    O my help, come quickly to my aid!
20 Deliver my soul from the sword,
    my life[c] from the power of the dog!
21     Save me from the mouth of the lion!

From the horns of the wild oxen you have rescued[d]me.
22 I will tell of your name to my brothers and sisters;[e]
    in the midst of the congregation I will praise you:
23 You who fear the Lord, praise him!
    All you offspring of Jacob, glorify him;
    stand in awe of him, all you offspring of Israel!
24 For he did not despise or abhor
    the affliction of the afflicted;
he did not hide his face from me[f]
    but heard when I[g] cried to him.

25 From you comes my praise in the great congregation;
    my vows I will pay before those who fear him.
26 The poor[h] shall eat and be satisfied;
    those who seek him shall praise the Lord.
    May your hearts live forever!

27 All the ends of the earth shall remember
    and turn to the Lord,
and all the families of the nations
    shall worship before him.[i]
28 For dominion belongs to the Lord,
    and he rules over the nations.

29 To him,[j] indeed, shall all who sleep in[k] the earth bow down;
    before him shall bow all who go down to the dust,
    and I shall live for him.[l]
30 Posterity will serve him;
    future generations will be told about the Lord
31 and[m] proclaim his deliverance to a people yet unborn,
    saying that he has done it.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 25

Psalm 25New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 25Prayer for Guidance and for DeliveranceOf David.

To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul.
O my God, in you I trust;
    do not let me be put to shame;
    do not let my enemies exult over me.
Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame;
    let them be ashamed who are wantonly treacherous.

Make me to know your ways, O Lord;
    teach me your paths.
Lead me in your truth and teach me,
    for you are the God of my salvation;
    for you I wait all day long.

Be mindful of your mercy, O Lord, and of your steadfast love,
    for they have been from of old.
Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions;
    according to your steadfast love remember me,
    for the sake of your goodness, O Lord!

Good and upright is the Lord;
    therefore he instructs sinners in the way.
He leads the humble in what is right
    and teaches the humble his way.
10 All the paths of the Lord are steadfast love and faithfulness,
    for those who keep his covenant and his decrees.

11 For your name’s sake, O Lord,
    pardon my guilt, for it is great.
12 Who are they who fear the Lord?
    He will teach them the way that they should choose.

13 They will abide in prosperity,
    and their children shall possess the land.
14 The friendship of the Lord is for those who fear him,
    and he makes his covenant known to them.
15 My eyes are ever toward the Lord,
    for he will pluck my feet out of the net.

16 Turn to me and be gracious to me,
    for I am lonely and afflicted.
17 Relieve the troubles of my heart,
    and bring me[
a] out of my distress.
18 Consider my affliction and my trouble,
    and forgive all my sins.

19 Consider how many are my foes
    and with what violent hatred they hate me.
20 O guard my life and deliver me;
    do not let me be put to shame, for I take refuge in you.
21 May integrity and uprightness preserve me,
    for I wait for you.

22 Redeem Israel, O God,
    out of all its troubles.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 50

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 50

Psalm 50New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 50The Acceptable SacrificeA Psalm of Asaph.

The mighty one, God the Lord,
    speaks and summons the earth
    from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
    God shines forth.

Our God comes and does not keep silent;
    before him is a devouring fire
    and a mighty tempest all around him.
He calls to the heavens above
    and to the earth, that he may judge his people:
“Gather to me my faithful ones,
    who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!”
The heavens declare his righteousness,
    for God himself is judge. Selah

“Hear, O my people, and I will speak,
    O Israel, I will testify against you.
    I am God, your God.
Not for your sacrifices do I rebuke you;
    your burnt offerings are continually before me.
I will not accept a bull from your house
    or goats from your folds.
10 For every wild animal of the forest is mine,
    the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the air,[
a]
    and all that moves in the field is mine.

12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
    for the world and all that is in it is mine.
13 Do I eat the flesh of bulls
    or drink the blood of goats?
14 Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving,[b]
    and pay your vows to the Most High.
15 Call on me in the day of trouble;
    I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

16 But to the wicked God says,
    “What right have you to recite my statutes
    or take my covenant on your lips?
17 For you hate discipline,
    and you cast my words behind you.
18 You make friends with a thief when you see one,
    and you keep company with adulterers.

19 You give your mouth free rein for evil,
    and your tongue frames deceit.
20 You sit and speak against your kin;
    you slander your own mother’s child.
21 These things you have done, and I have been silent;
    you thought that I was one just like yourself.
But now I rebuke you and lay the charge before you.

22 Mark this, then, you who forget God,
    or I will tear you apart, and there will be no one to deliver.
23 Those who bring thanksgiving as their sacrifice honor me;
    to those who go the right way,[c]
    I will show the salvation of God.”

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Pslam 147

Psalm 147New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 147Praise for God’s Care for Jerusalem

Praise the Lord!
How good it is to sing praises to our God,
    for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.
The Lord builds up Jerusalem;
    he gathers the outcasts of Israel.
He heals the brokenhearted
    and binds up their wounds.
He determines the number of the stars;
    he gives to all of them their names.
Great is our Lord and abundant in power;
    his understanding is beyond measure.
The Lord lifts up the downtrodden;
    he casts the wicked to the ground.

Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving;
    make melody to our God on the lyre.
He covers the heavens with clouds,
    prepares rain for the earth,
    makes grass grow on the hills.
He gives to the animals their food
    and to the young ravens when they cry.
10 His delight is not in the strength of the horse
    nor his pleasure in the speed of a runner,[
a]
11 but the Lord takes pleasure in those who fear him,
    in those who hope in his steadfast love.

12 Extol the Lord, O Jerusalem!
    Praise your God, O Zion!
13 For he strengthens the bars of your gates;
    he blesses your children within you.
14 He grants peace[b] within your borders;
    he fills you with the finest of wheat.
15 He sends out his command to the earth;
    his word runs swiftly.
16 He gives snow like wool;
    he scatters frost like ashes.
17 He hurls down hail like crumbs—
    who can stand before his cold?
18 He sends out his word and melts them;
    he makes his wind blow, and the waters flow.
19 He declares his word to Jacob,
    his statutes and ordinances to Israel.
20 He has not dealt thus with any other nation;
    they do not know his ordinances.
Praise the Lord!

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 62

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 62

Psalm 62New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 62Song of Trust in God AloneTo the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.

For God alone my soul waits in silence;
    from him comes my salvation.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall never be shaken.

How long will you assail a person,
    will you batter your victim, all of you,
    as you would a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
Their only plan is to bring down a person of prominence.
    They take pleasure in falsehood;
they bless with their mouths,
    but inwardly they curse. Selah

For God alone my soul waits in silence,
    for my hope is from him.
He alone is my rock and my salvation,
    my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
On God rests my deliverance and my honor;
    my mighty rock, my refuge is in God.

Trust in him at all times, O people;
    pour out your heart before him;
    God is a refuge for us. Selah

Those of low estate are but a breath;
    those of high estate are a delusion;
in the balances they go up;
    they are together lighter than a breath.
10 Put no confidence in extortion,
    and set no vain hopes on robbery;
    if riches increase, do not set your heart on them.

11 Once God has spoken;
    twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12     and steadfast love belongs to you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
    according to their work.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 139

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 139

Psalm 139New Revised Standard Version Updated EditionPsalm 139The Inescapable GodTo the leader. Of David. A Psalm.

O Lord, you have searched me and known me.
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
    you discern my thoughts from far away.
You search out my path and my lying down
    and are acquainted with all my ways.
Even before a word is on my tongue,
    O Lord, you know it completely.
You hem me in, behind and before,
    and lay your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
    it is so high that I cannot attain it.

Where can I go from your spirit?
    Or where can I flee from your presence?
If I ascend to heaven, you are there;
    if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there.
If I take the wings of the morning
    and settle at the farthest limits of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
    and your right hand shall hold me fast.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
    and night wraps itself around me,”[
a]
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
    the night is as bright as the day,
    for darkness is as light to you.

13 For it was you who formed my inward parts;
    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
    Wonderful are your works;
that I know very well.
15     My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
    intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes beheld my unformed substance.
In your book were written
    all the days that were formed for me,
    when none of them as yet existed.[b]
17 How weighty to me are your thoughts, O God!
    How vast is the sum of them!
18 I try to count them—they are more than the sand;
    I come to the end[c]—I am still with you.

19 O that you would kill the wicked, O God,
    and that the bloodthirsty would depart from me—
20 those who speak of you maliciously
    and lift themselves up against you for evil![d]
21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord?
    And do I not loathe those who rise up against you?
22 I hate them with perfect hatred;
    I count them my enemies.
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
    test me and know my thoughts.
24 See if there is any wicked[e] way in me,
    and lead me in the way everlasting.[f]

Like One Who Watches For the Morning: Psalm 29

Psalm 29The Voice of God in a Great StormA Psalm of David.

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings,[a]
    ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
Ascribe to the Lord the glory of his name;
    worship the Lord in holy splendor.

The voice of the Lord is over the waters;
    the God of glory thunders,
    the Lord, over mighty waters.
The voice of the Lord is powerful;
    the voice of the Lord is full of majesty.

The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars;
    the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon skip like a calf
    and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the Lord flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness;
    the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the Lord causes the oaks to whirl[b]
    and strips the forest bare,
    and in his temple all say, “Glory!”

10 The Lord sits enthroned over the flood;
    the Lord sits enthroned as king forever.
11 May the Lord give strength to his people!
    May the Lord bless his people with peace!

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 148

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 148

Reflection:

The elements that we need to sustain life (air, water, food, shelter) can point us to something larger than our selves.  The need for basic necessities can make them feel, well, more than basic; they become symbols that help us understand our relationship to the earth and to the divine and to each other. We are connected. We are connected by the air we breath, the water we drink, and the earth on which we live.

In Psalm 148 all of creation is called to praise God, who is creator and life-giver. Elements and creatures praise God by holding their places, by being and doing what they are created to be. Nan Merrill captures in a more modern way what is meant by “raised up a horn for his people”. People are invited to be in relationship with God, to be co-creators and people of peace.

When I think of creation, and co-creation, I think of the breath of God shared by God, by people, and by all of creation, for the purpose of simply being; being together; being in loving relationship; being one.

Other writings that may add to future reflections on this psalm:

Hildegard of Bingen understood elements (earth, air, fire, and water) making up the cosmos and all beings, especially humans. She combined her theology and science to describe how the cosmos was ordered by God. You can read more detail about her thoughts in the link under the picture of her vision of the universe. Her love of art, music, and healing/medicine come though in her work as well. God is creator of all that is good.

“The Canticle of the Sun” is attributed to St. Francis. It is an Italian poem in which the elements and all of nature praises God with the words that gave this canticle its original title, “Laudato Si”which means “Praise be to You” in medieval Italian. (The full canticle can be found in my notes section below).

The Presbyterian Hymnal includes O God of Earth and Space by Jane Parker Huber (1990) that praises the God through naming elements of creation. (The lyrics can be found in my notes section below).

Thinking about psalm 148, I wrote this call to worship:

Praise the Lord! All creation, all creatures, and all people, praise God.
Praise the LORD!
We are one with creation. Our care for all of creation is an expression of praise.
Praise the LORD!
We are Inclusive!  Our love for all people is an expression of praise.
Praise the LORD!

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Pslam 89

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Pslam 89

Reflection:

In Psalm 89 we see that the people of God remember God’s promises and are waiting for the fulfillment of those promises. They are waiting for the happy ending. And in the midst of current unpleasant circumstances, they are waiting anxiously. We know God’s attributes are righteousness, justice, steadfast love, and faithfulness. We also know that right now it doesn’t feel like that because the world is full of self-righteousness, injustice, hate, and disloyalty. We are disillusioned. Why did the LORD’s anointed fail? Why can’t the people of God live in peace and safety? How long O God, until you come to make things right? Even in the midst of unanswered questions and unfinished work, the psalmist affirms that God always listening and remembers. Knowing that God does not forget, gives us a little hope that God will return and make all things new.

As people of faith, we know that we are not alone, we have each other and we have God who listens when we pray, when we cry, and when we scream into the void. So together we wait, we hope, and we talk to God who listens to all of our unfinished stories. And together we will find a way to move forward.

Advent is a season of unfinished stories and anxious waiting. Christians remember a time when God became flesh and dwelt among us. The Messiah came down from heaven to be with creation. And yet, Christ’s work is not complete. We are still waiting for the second coming.

I invite you to give God the unfinished story your holding so it is no longer taking up room in your hands. I believe that as God’s people we are called to continue God’s unfinished work of justice and love, even if we don’t finish the work.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 126

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 126

Reflection:

There are ebbs and flows in our lived experience, tears flow, joy is shouted, and there are countless feelings in the in-between. Psalms can provide language and liturgy for all moments we need to articulate our emotions before God. Psalms for joy and celebration. Psalms for sorrow and grief. Psalms for love and peace. Psalms for despair. Psalms for hope. Psalms for when everything is falling apart. Psalms for holy anger and screams for justice.  Psalms for communal worship and for personal prayer. Psalms for God’s mysteriousness that we cannot quite put into words.  Psalms for holy wonder at the sacredness of everyday moments.

I'm reflecting on this psalm in what is yet another season of transition in my life. Circumstances will change. It will get better and it will get worse. God’s love is steadfast.

It seems to me that God has a habit of bringing us out of the difficult times. God is renewing, transforming, and enlivening us again. God’s work is for our salvation; the cycle of life, death, and resurrection spiral anew in each generation.  This cycle is not only for the forgiveness of sin but for the reversal of the oppression and injustice caused by sin.  Even now, the prisoners suffer, the poor are hungry, the sick are terrified by their illness, and yet, we believe that the injustices that each of them face will be righted, even though the work is still incomplete. There is hope that while the pattern repeats, it is not an exact repeat, more like a spiral than a circle. We are moving closer to the kin-dom of God.

In advent, we sow tears, we mourn, we repent, and we hope that God will be born within us once again, to bring the joy of our salvation.

1 I will sing of your steadfast love, O Lord, forever;
    with my mouth I will proclaim your faithfulness to all generations.
2 I declare that your steadfast love is established forever;
    your faithfulness is as firm as the heavens.
49 Lord, where is your steadfast love of old,
    which by your faithfulness you swore to David?
50 Remember, O Lord, how your servant is taunted,
    how I bear in my bosom the insults of the peoples,
51 with which your enemies taunt, O Lord,
    with which they taunted the footsteps of your anointed.

52 Blessed be the Lord forever.
                Amen and Amen.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 85

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Psalm 85

Reflection:

"Powered by some of the most imaginative and evocative metaphors in the Bible, Psalm 85 counters our world of anxiety, scarcity, self-sufficiency, denial, amnesia, and despair with hope rooted in "God the Promise Keeper". Walter Brueggemann

The hope we have is that new life will come from God and this new life is God. The new way of living must include the attributes characteristic of the way of the LORD: covenant loyal love (hesed), faithfulness (’emet), righteousness (sedeq), and peace (shalom). Verses 10 -11 describe the attributes of God as meeting in the middle. Love and faithfulness will come up from the ground and righteousness and peace will come down from the sky and meet in a holy kiss. God is going to move heaven and earth to revive us again.

Salvation happens when the love and faithfulness and righteousness and peace of God are active in and through the community of God-fearing faithful. God’s work is God’s character and we are to be transformed to be like God and carry out that work. This Oneing with God (as Julian of Norwich would call it) is what look forward to and prepare for especially in advent. Advent is about softening our hearts, humbling our pride, reconciling with God and neighbor, and living as one.

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Pslam 80

Like One Who Watches For The Morning: Pslam 80

Reflection: Psalm 80

The shepherd metaphor is used five times (23:128:949:1478:71; and 80:1) in the psalms and Psalm 23 is the only time it is not used as a complaint or lament. In Psalm 80, the psalmist is asking the Shepherd to listen to the cries of the people and save us.

The writer of psalm 80 wants what the writer of psalm 23 has; The Good Shepherd who leads, guides, and restores life. More than wants, the psalmist believes it is possible even when the circumstances would seem otherwise. Psalm 80 is a lament, but it is also a psalm of faith and hope. It is hope in God’s gracious willingness to repent (see v. 14) or turn or return to the work of bringing life to humanity. It is faith in God’s tender loving care that we have once received and we long for again.

The psalmist feels that God is at fault for not taking care of the vineyard (which is the only occasion the vineyard metaphor is used to accuse God of not caring for the vine). Psalm 80 asks why God is letting all of God’s work be ruined.

In psalm 80, the faithful long for God to see what’s happening, to hear our cries, and most importantly to enter our lives anew to bring healing and restoration. We are waiting, hoping, and believing that God will return to lead, guide, and restore our lives. The psalms before and after psalm 80 identify people’s sin as the reason we feel separated from God. But, psalm 80 more than implies that God is the one not present or not actively engaged in relationship. When we feel distant from God, is it God who abandoned us in our time of need or did we loose connection with God? The Psalms say yes. In my experience, sometimes I disengaged with the divine, but sometimes it does feel as though God is the one who stepped away and I'm glad that the psalms express both of these view points. Either way, there is hope that the relationship will be restored and made new.

Advent is a season of waiting and listening; and most of all hoping that we will see God in our midst just as we have before. We are hoping for what we have already experienced and we know we will experience God’s presence again.
