19. "Can't Sink Truth": Pursuing Buoyancy in Life After the Drowning of her Son- Dana Gage

Kate had me meet... Dana Gage.

I was fortunate to cross paths with Dana during a stay in Waco, Texas two years ago. As I battled cancer, she shared her battle of living life without her son Connor. After losing him to a preventable accident, Dana has lived a life pursuing water safety and drowning prevention. Her story is powerful, and we can all be better after listening.

Here in MN, we have had nearly 30 drowning accidents in 2021. It is July 1, and we have only had swimmable hot weather for a couple months.

18. Purpose in the Pain: How a Baby, Depression, and Cancer Lead to this Podcast

18. Purpose in the Pain: How a Baby, Depression, and Cancer Lead to this Podcast

Celebrating life, perspective, and humanity is usually the short version of how I explain this podcast. However, the roots of the podcast run deep. Today I unpack much of what brought me to the point of finally creating and publishing Kate Had Me Meet. The road wasn't easy, but it was needed.

The birth of our daughter Verabeth, devastating depression/anxiety, and a cancer diagnosis all happened within a seven month period in 2018-2019. It was amazing to discover how I reacted when forced to suddenly fight for my life. It was all very unexpected.

Thank you for listening. When I say it means the world... it really does, as you'll hear today.

16. Bullied and Beaten in School: Historic Justice for Students Everywhere- Jamie Nabozny

Kate Had Me Meet... Jamie Nabozny.

Jamie is a new friend of mine and my family's here in the Twin Cities. It didn't take long to find out that he had a movie based off of his life... but for a story that broke my heart. Teased, tormented, bullied, and severely beaten in school, Jamie sought out safety for himself... and also historic justice. His lawsuit paved the way for students everywhere to have a safer school experience.

14. The Best of Episodes 1-4! Talking about race with Jebeh, Shaniqua, Noah, and Mark

When I selected my favorite portions of Episodes 1-3, I noticed they each discussed race and/or privilege. While it is a favorite topic of mine, I truly love how three very different people discuss their relationship with race. It's a conversation we should all be having with ourselves and our circles. Mark Hagland was featured in episode 4, and we spoke a few days ago about his new book! Highlights from this conversation are featured in this episode as well. You can find his book at www.markhaglandbook.com

Kate Had Me Meet: Jill Staub

Jill served on the east coast as an officer in the prison system. She was inspired to come forward after listening to Episode 8 with Officer Becki. She shares about what her career was like, relationships amongst coworkers, the treatment of inmates, and the staff culture. There are many things she sees more clearly now that she is out, and she has a lot to say about it.

9. Chance Encounters With Two Minneapolis Men: On the Spot Reflections of Race, Community, and Solutions

Kate Had Me Meet... Two Men of Minneapolis.

Some of you know, I'm not shy about asking questions and seeking conversations... even if it means walking up to strangers. I was blessed to have two different men, nearly a year apart, share at random during two very raw and emotional times for the Minneapolis area.

Last summer, in the week after the murder of George Floyd, I met the first gentleman near the memorial site. It is my goal to track down his name- my phone appears to have deleted all of my old texts! :( He shares what it was like to grow up spending a lot of time in the Powderhorn neighborhood where George was killed. Also, he shares his thoughts about racism and his life goals.

The second interview was again, on the fly, and really... special. Willie's apartment has been caught in the literal crossfire of police and military presence in the days following Daunte Wright's death. Protests and community gatherings had taken over the streets, and law enforcement didn't hold back on rubber bullets, tear gas, and grenades. One week after Daunte's death, I stopped by Willie's apartment and asked to chat. He is 60 years old, and shares his perspectives on being a black man, racism, and hopes.

An honor to bring these voices to you. May you be better and richer for it.

8. 10 Years As A Police Officer: Are We Really Serving and Protecting? - Fmr Officer Becki Pederson

Kate Had Me Meet... Becki Pederson

Earlier this week, another life was lost in an officer involved shooting. Daunte Wright was shot and killed by Officer Kimberly Potter in Brooklyn Center, MN.

The next day, I interviewed former Bemidji, MN police officer Becki Pederson to get her perspective on Daunte's story, her own officer involved shooting, and policing in general.

We spoke for nearly 2 hours. We both struggled with wanting the content to serve listeners.... was this the right time? After the edit process, I assured her that I believed it was exactly the right time.

Please be warned: Content includes some details about her involvement in a shooting (I did remove some of it in order to be sensitive to the audience), adult language, discussions of suicide, alcoholism, mental health, violence, sexism, and other traumas. We also discuss Caron Nazario and George Floyd.

Part 2 in the two part series about inclusivity in the Christian Church-
Founders and co-pastors Kris and Nikki Sauter lead their church away from being a part of a popular (mega church!) denomination in order to make sure that “everyone could play” in their congregation. Listen in on their journey to be coming inclusive and affirming.

You are loved. You belong. You are seen. And you are welcome.
*Language warning/explicit* - all in fun. :)

Mentioned in this episode (7):
www.soyouredeconstructing.com - You are not alone. Most people who find themselves in a crisis of faith start by asking good (but tough) questions. These questions can make people around them uneasy, and are often met with only one “acceptable” answer. Often, what comes next is a difficult experience of insecurity as we doubt our commitments to our deepest held beliefs and values. But this doesn’t have to be the end of your faith journey. Our hope is to provide you with resources that will transform a crisis into an opportunity for renewal, healing, and learning. There’s great richness and diversity in the real-life Christian church, from which we hope you may find new inspiration for a faith reborn!

6. God, Sexuality, and the American Church: My story of working towards LGBTQ inclusivity in my faith community

6. God, Sexuality, and the American Church: My story of working towards LGBTQ inclusivity in my faith community

Today's podcast was meant to be my introduction of Pastor Kris Sauter. I wanted to share parts of my experience from the past 15 years in finding home in a faith community while also trying to push to keep church a safe and welcoming place. My "quick intro" turned into an entire episode, as I summarized some of the major experiences... and instead of editing it down, I just let it be. I'll play Kris's interview NEXT week. :)

What I saw and heard so often... felt harmful. It was hurtful. But there is great hope....

This is MY perspective.

Thanks for listening. Please comment, rate, and subscribe. Share with friends if you like what you hear. My intention is to introduce people and perspectives you wouldn't have heard otherwise.

In today's episode, I reference:
OutFront MN: https://www.outfront.org "OutFront Minnesota’s mission is to create a state where lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people are free to be who they are, love who they love, and live without fear of violence, harassment or discrimination. We envision a state where LGBTQ individuals have equal opportunities, protection and rights. We are working toward the day when all Minnesotans have the freedom, power and confidence to make the best choices for their own lives."

5. The Challenge of Finding Identity, Community, and Safety as an Asian Adoptee- Mark Hagland

5. The Challenge of Finding Identity, Community, and Safety as an Asian Adoptee- Mark Hagland

Kate Had Me Meet... Mark Hagland.
Chicago resident, raised in Wisconsin, born in South Korea. Mark and his twin were adopted as infants by a white couple in the 1960s. Over 100,000 Korean adoptees have come to the United States since that time.

With racism and violence against Asian Americans surging this year, Mark discusses what it's like to navigate these times as someone who has never quite felt at home in white culture or Asian culture.
Mark facilitates a Facebook group called Transracial Adoption Perspectives, leading over 6000 transracial adoptees and (typically white) adoptive parents. This group has been crucial to me as a mother and has helped change the course of our lives as a transracial family.

Terms used in this episode:
"White adjacency" - (n.) A person who is technically a minority, but has access to, utilizes and sometimes benefits from white privilege. This is usually accomplished by said person distancing themselves from the socio political problems their ethnic group commonly faces. Usually by considering considering themselves better than their minority counterparts sharing their same ethnic heritage. This can also be a person who thinks they are are better minorities possessing a darker complexion.

"Othering" - Othering is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labeled as not fitting in within the norms of a social group.

"Virtue Signaling"- the action or practice of publicly expressing opinions or sentiments intended to demonstrate one's good character or the moral correctness of one's position on a particular issue.

Books referenced: White Fragility- By Robin Diangelo
amzn.to/3vWmvu5 In this “vital, necessary, and beautiful book” (Michael Eric Dyson), antiracist educator Robin DiAngelo deftly illuminates the phenomenon of white fragility and “allows us to understand racism as a practice not restricted to ‘bad people’ (Claudia Rankine). Referring to the defensive moves that white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt, and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent any meaningful cross-racial dialogue. In this in-depth exploration, DiAngelo examines how white fragility develops, how it protects racial inequality, and what we can do to engage more constructively.

4. Our International Transracial Adoption: Race, Ethics, and Reflection

Kate Had Me Meet.... Kate! :)

With this week being spring break for my children, I took a time-out from production to spend extra time with the kids. I asked my friends Resa and Erika from the Colombian Influence podcast for some assistance. They shared the audio from my recent interview to share with you. Instead of me asking the questions, the questions were asked of me. Please help me thank them by finding Colombian Influence on social media and your podcasting platform. Listen in to their work in supporting adoptees, holding space for powerful testimonies, and honoring the entire adoption triad.

I have four biological children and two children via adoption from Haiti. Originally, Resa and Erika interviewed me to learn more about my move from rural Minnesota to the metropolitan Minneapolis area. Their questions really gave me a chance to unpack a LOT of what I have seen and learned over the years in regards to race and adoption. It was a bit unexpected for us all; I'm so honored and thankful to have had the chance to discuss this with them... and you.
