Jiu Jitsu Is Hard

Jiu Jitsu Is Hard

By Katie Ericson

Jiu Jitsu is hard - pure and simple. Day in and day out, people from diverse backgrounds walk into Jiu jitsu gyms looking to start classes. Unsurprisingly, Jiu Jitsu has close to a 90% attrition rate for new students, so who are the 10% that make it through the first couple months and continue to train? What drives them to continue through brutal workouts that involve contorting into a human sweat pretzel? In Season 1 of Jiu Jitsu is Hard, we’re talking to people who did just that. My name is Katie Ericson, a black belt and co-owner of NWMA Coos Bay and your host for the podcast.

Frederick Robert Burrows, Sr.

The love your Mallory shared in this podcast episode for all three of you is unmatched. So many gorgeous stories were shared about each one of you and we feel as if you were in the room with us. Jordyn, I did not know you in this life, but Mallory brought your spirit into our world and shared your joy for laughter, jokes, and a spirit of never giving up – especially in the face of cancer. Mary and Frederick, your love for each other graced us and surrounded us in this episode. We felt as though you were our grandparents too, and your love for Mallory was felt through her words.

This episode focuses on mental health topics that includes death, grief, sadness, depression, anxiety and also love, courage, bravery, and laughter. Mallory was compelled to share her story with us about what she has gone through the last year and how she was able to use jiu jitsu as an outlet for her grief.

We hope you enjoy the first episode of Season 2 and encourage you to reach out if you are struggling.

Sometimes there aren’t enough rocks

Sometimes there aren’t enough rocks

Been a minute! This podcast mainly focuses on the mental aspects of Jiu jitsu while being unable to actually practice Jiu jitsu. I also talk about chronic illness, depression and anxiety, negative thoughts loops, and what we can do to create better mental environments for ourselves. This was a little all over the place but I think it’s worth your time. Oh, and Forrest Gump is NOT a funny movie, okay.

Six Weeks

Six Weeks

This is a piece I wrote about the last six weeks of my experience of going from a 50% capacity to an 80% capacity, all to be taken out by a chronic illness. My strength coach asked me to write this piece describing what it’s like to get to the top of your game and have everything going for you and then have it taken away and what perspective you gained from the experience. This was painful to process and painful to accept about myself, but it’s also liberating to tell my story. Thanks, Henry.

Listen in on my conversation with my good friend, Coast Guard Operations Specialist 2nd Class, Aaron Naguiat, who is more fondly known as “Baby” Aaron. Aaron is a spunky blue belt who is trying to avoid the curse and is young enough to have a wildly optimistic view on life outcomes. He can cut a rug and we both enjoy a good jam to vibe at the gym to. He’s lucky he has a Jiu jitsu mom, Jenn, that helped him stay the course on his journey. Here’s to one of the funniest and warm persons I know, Beebee Aaron
