The Dog Savvy Kids Podcast with Katie

By Katie McKnight

Let’s talk dogs. You love your dog. For some reason your dog does not like your child or guests in your home.

The problem is that your dog is likely feeling insecure, nervous or frustrated around your child and guests.

My name is Katie and I am a Certified Bite Prevention Educator. Let’s meet here a few times a month to discuss dogs. There may be things about dogs in general that you don’t know. Learning more about our canine friends may be just what you need in order to bring the zen back to your home.

Ex. Dogs feel guilt? That’s not true. Dogs have emotions, just not guilt.

Signs Your Dog Is Stressed or Frightened

Signs Your Dog Is Stressed or Frightened

Many people are under the assumption that only "bad" dogs bite. They believe tolerant, good dogs will never lose their cool. In reality, good dogs can be pushed to a point that they become angry. When dogs are angry they can growl, bark, jump, scratch and bite.

Dogs are no different than humans. Good humans lose their cool and so can good dogs. A good dog owner works hard to prevent their dog from getting to the point of snapping. We can do that by monitoring our dog's emotions throughout the day and when interacting with others. This podcast is taking a turn from regular dog situations to focusing more on behavior and safety.

This topic change follows the business motto of my new company Dog Savvy Kids. Dog Savvy Kids teaches adults and children how to read dogs. We want everyone to know when it is safe to interact with a dog and when the dog is feeling stressed, thereby needing some space. Dogs are great creatures that provide us happiness and health benefits. We want to ensure we are equally great to live with by understanding their needs.

In today's episode we learn some signs dogs provide when they are feeling stressed, scared and frustrated. Let's learn about our dogs and pay attention to their mood. In doing so we will: CNTL (the environment for our dog) + ALTer (our behavior around dogs) + DEL (unnecessary dog bites). We will also learn WHEN TO PLAY and WHEN TO STAY AWAY.

Dog Trancing and Wagging Tails

Dog Trancing and Wagging Tails

Did you know that more is at risk,  than a dog bite, when you pull your dog by their tail?  Pulling a dog's tail can cause quite a bit of damage for the dog.  We are going to discuss the injuries that can occur.  We will also provide alternate ways to keep your dog from bolting out the door and failing to listen.

We will also discuss a strange behavior that some dog owners have witnessed.  It is called dog trancing.  Learn about the behavior, the medical findings and what you should (or should't) do when you notice it.  If you would like to read about these two subjects, visit our website at iscdt.com and click on blog.  We write about a host of behaviors and problem solvers.

Want to become a dog trainer?  visit iscdt.com to learn more about us and to enroll.  When we started ISCDT our goal was to ensure anyone could afford to learn more about dogs and learn how to train them.  This is our 4th year and we are proud to say we have not raised our prices.    Our main focus is on dogs and the people who want to learn how to train them.

Do you enjoy this podcast?  We hope so.  Please provide a review and subscribe.  This helps spread the word.  We hope our blog increases the bond between you and your dog.

Episode 24: The Importance of Open-minded and Flexible Dog Training

Episode 24: The Importance of Open-minded and Flexible Dog Training

The belief that all dogs learn the same is wrong.  Dogs learn differently and so do people.  A good dog trainer does not provide cookie-cutter dog training.  Instead, they have different techniques to help every dog (and dog owner) succeed.  They are open to new ideas (even if they don't follow them at first).  This is an important aspect of the job and one we need to keep in mind throughout our career.

Episode 21: How Do You Fix Bad Dog Training

Episode 21: How Do You Fix Bad Dog Training

Often times we attempt to fix an annoying problem with our dog, but end up creating a larger problem.  Once a dog behaves a certain way (example:  jumping on guests, begging from the dinner table, stealing from counters) can we change that behavior?  The short answer is yes.  It take patience and some tough love to solve the issue and create a behavior that we desire.

Today's episode discusses how you can accomplish this task using BF Skinner's theory of operant conditioning *

Want to learn more about dog training, visit ISCDT.com to enroll in our online dog training course.  This course consists of 18 lessons.  Students work with dogs throughout the training and their personal mentor guides them by watching a series of videos submitted by students evidencing their work with dogs.  Learn how to teach commands and build on those commands so they can be applied during real life situations, regardless of setting or distraction level.

Episode 20: Pet Loss. It's Normal to Grieve The Loss of your Pet.

When I lost my first dog, insensitive comments were upsetting and made me feel guilt over mourning my dog for so long.  Comments like: "You're family is healthy, be grateful," made me wonder if I was selfish or stupid feeling so sad over her loss.  Of course I was not wrong.  She was my best friend.  Our family member.  We had the right to mourn her.

So today, we have listed some hurtful comments mourning pet owners hear.  We have also provided alternate responses people can use when comforting a pet owner who recently lost their four-legged fur baby.
