Advocacy Coalitions: What your city officials need to do NOW with Bianca Rosen

Advocacy Coalitions: What your city officials need to do NOW with Bianca Rosen

On this episode I sit down with Bianca Rosen.

Bianca Rosen is a writer, anti-rape advocate, and communications strategist based in the Bay Area. Her work in the anti-rape movement began as a sexual assault counselor in San Francisco. For three and a half years, she supported survivors on the local crisis line. Through this experience, she witnessed how the City mistreats survivors and fails in its response to sexual violence. Bianca’s time as a counselor galvanized her to advocate and write extensively on this issue. She wrote a graduate thesis that examined San Francisco’s response to sexual assault from a survivor-centered perspective and made recommendations for change. She adapted this graduate thesis into an article for a local publication and authored several Op-Eds that jumpstarted a dialogue among elected leaders and community members about adopting more survivor-centered practices. Today, she is organizing a coalition of survivors and allies on the frontlines of local anti-rape advocacy work. She wants to build the survivor community’s political power to interrupt and improve responses to sexual violence at the local level.

Paving the way: Rashonda Wilson on Advocating for Survivors of Color

Paving the way: Rashonda Wilson on Advocating for Survivors of Color

Rashonda Wilson is the founder of I'm A Survivor, Inc.  As a woman of the African Diaspora ("Women of Color") and a survivor of sexual assault, she is passionate about healing women of color, who are survivors of sexual violence and communities affected by it.  Accordingly, Ms. Wilson found a need to advocate for women of color, who are survivors of sexual violence as well as spreading awareness about sexual violence in the Detroit Metropolitan Area.

I'm A Survivor, Inc. envisions the world healed from generational trauma that continues to haunt marginalized communities and women of color.  Therefore, I'm A Survivor, Inc. strives to help women of color have a voice; to reshape systems or institutions that oppress, marginalize, and objectify women of color; and to descretate the rape culture.

In order to achieve this vision, I'm A Survivor, Inc.  1) encourages healing via support group services, Bible study, and indigenous spiritual healing methods; 2) empowers women of color to boldly share their stories in order to debunk stereotypes that women of color cannot get raped; and 3) educates communities in the Detroit Metropolitan Area on sexual violence and its effects on women of color, the Black family, and the inner city community in an effort to stop blaming rape on woman of color and encourage the conversation of sexual violence in the Black family.

Putting Survivors FIRST with Jordyn Marsh

Putting Survivors FIRST with Jordyn Marsh

On this episode, I sit down with Jordyn Marsh.

Jordyn is a passionate advocate for those working to end sexual violence in all forms. A vibrant voice, Jordyn has been instrumental in helping college campuses and communities open up the dialogue concerning a culture built around sexual violence and rape.

The work that Jordyn has engaged with revolves around facilitating and leading local peer support and advocacy groups. By also sharing her own story of survival, she is able to harness bits of her struggle, exchanging pain for healing. Within that instrumental work, Jordyn has inspired others by playing a vital role in community events, like photo campaigns and mid-scale awareness events such as Take Back the Night, empowering 5K walk-runs, as well as other grass-roots advocacy work throughout the Northern Michigan community.

Within a period lasting less than five years, Jordyn has not only gained attention locally but nationally as well. She would be the first to admit that she never dreamed her work could have such a force in a community; what began with an inner courage and strength has grown into a voice all its own.

You can follow Jordyn's work and content on twitter at : @jordynemarsh

BREAKING the Fear & Anxiety cycle: How I went from flashbacks every day to once in a blue moon

*Please note this episode was primarily recorded on 5/25 prior to the death of George Floyd & current events. I apologize if anything comes across as I was not aware of the outrage of the death of George Floyd and the outrage of police brutality as it was recorded previously.

Included in this episode places to donate and get involved: George Floyd Memorial Fund, Black Visions Collective, Campaign 0, Minnesota Freedom Fund

Breaking down the strategies that work for coping with fear, stress, anxiety, flashbacks and triggers.

Flashbacks are very common after trauma. It can feel like it is controlling you. Learn techniques that break the fear and anxiety cycle.

I don't know about you but I am tired of being told to "take deep breaths" and it will magically fix my triggers and anxiety.

I want to cut to the chase and give you real techniques that I hacked to go from flashbacks daily to less than three a year.
