That Grief Relief Podcast

By Katie Overy

That Grief Relief Podcast with Katie Overy is a light-hearted series chatting about all things grief and why it's ok to have a laugh in the process!

Katie delves into why grief seems to be such a taboo subject and, why when she makes a joke about her dead parents, does everything turn a bit awkward?!

Hopefully bringing a little ‘light relief to the grief’, this series is not here to offend or dampen moods… it’s here to put a smile on your face and just maybe, help you along the way, whether you’re going through something right now or not.

Ep. 25 - Zainab Al Eqabi

Whilst Zainab speaks openly about her story (TEDTalks and everything!) she’s never spoken about her grief.  It’s not that she grieves what happened to her, more that she had to grow up sooner than she ultimately should have.

Zainab is a warm, wonderful woman and a fantastic role model, but not so great at cleaning out her trainers after a trip to the beach, as you will soon find out!  I can’t wait to walk sand all through her house when I go round for dinner with her family (which I may or may not have invited myself to!)

Ep. 15 - Laura Madaio

Laura & I connected through Instagram just last year; she is the amazing woman behind the Instagram account, @griefhungry, that I spoke about in episode 2.

Laura’s Dad, John, died in truly bizarre circumstances.  In this episode, she talks about the day it happened and how she and her family found out details of her Dad’s death through the media whilst waiting for updates in the hospital.  Her family’s ‘relationship’ with the media, including social media, didn’t stop there.

We also chatted about ‘grief brain’, the amazing grief community Laura has built online and, of course, how food seems to bring us all together.

Ep. 4 - My sister-in-law Stacey

Not only did I face massive audio issues (that I would LOVE to blame on technical error, but it was me!), but this episode is all over the place, as there was a lot to cover, so apologies for that too!

Stacey is a founding member of the D.D.C, with her Dad passing away when she was 15 months old, but can you grieve someone you didn't know or don't remember?!  We also talk about the stigmas still surrounding the taking of medication to combat mental health... oh and the fact that my brother killed her family cat. #RIPPenny.

Ep. 3 - My step brother Danny

Ep. 3 - My step brother Danny

Slowly working my way through my family! This episode delves into indirect grief. Whilst Danny doesn’t remember the intricate details and dates of my Dad’s illness and passing, he talks honestly about how my Dad impacted his life and how his grief was more for us (his Mum, Russell & I); how we were coping and what he could do to help. He also did extremely well to not swear the entire episode… and that deserves five stars in itself!

Ep. 2 - My big brother Russell

Ep. 2 - My big brother Russell

This is a long one, but that's what happens when you have two dead parents!  Russell & I talk about the lead up to our Dad's passing after a short battle with cancer, and the night neither of us will forget.  We also chat about our counselling experiences and why 'forcing' your way through the grieving process isn't always the best thing to do.

Ep. 1 - My little brother Oliver

Ep. 1 - My little brother Oliver

In this first ever episode, Oliver & I talk about the night Mum passed away; the fact his memories are so blurred a dragon may have appeared, and neither of us can remember who was hit over the head with an ashtray in Eastenders!
