General Conference Conversations

“Think Celestial!” is the most quoted talk of this conference. In it, President Nelson reminds us of the benefit of seeing our lives with an eternal perspective. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How are you “thinking Celestial” in your day to day life?

“We Are His Children” by Elder Giraud-Carrier is all about seeing others as God’s children. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How does your perspective of someone change when you see them first as a child of God?

In “Love is Spoken Here,” Elder Gong talks about three “languages of gospel love.” Here are questions he asks to considers as you study:

“So, where and how does Jesus Christ speak to you in love?

Where and how do you hear His love spoken here?”

Elder Esplin’s talk “The Savior’s Healing Power upon the Isles of the Sea” is all about the miracles God is working with temples. Here is a question to consider as you study:

“Through temple blessings, the Savior heals individuals, families, and nations—even those that once stood as bitter enemies.”

How have you seen this healing in your life?

I also mentioned a talk by Elder Renlund from October 2021: “The Peace of Christ Abolishes Enmity.”

In “Divine Parenting Lessons,” Elder Cordón talks about parenting, but a lot of what he teaches about can be used in other relationships as well. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How can you be more intentional with your time with the people around you?

Elder Pingree’s talk “Eternal Truth” is all about truth! Here are a few questions to consider as you study:

Have you ever been taught a truth (or been corrected) that felt like it was not done from a place of love?

How did that make you feel?

How can you teach or bear testimony with love?

“Jesus Christ Is the Treasure” by Elder Renlund reminds us to not “look beyond the mark.” Here’s a question to consider as you study:

Where in your life can you see that you’re looking for specific blessings instead of seeing what’s there?

President Eyring’s talk “Our Constant Companion” is about, you guessed it, the Spirit and the promise we have to have it with us constantly. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

When have you been led “minute by minute” by the spirit?

Here is a question to consider while studying “More Than a Hero” by Bishop Waddell:

Are there things or people in your life who you might give more attention to than Jesus Christ?

Elder Uchtdorf, in his talk “The Prodigal and the Road That Leads Home,” relates the story of the Prodigal Son. Here is a question to consider as you study:

How do you relate to the prodigal son in this story? How do you relate to the older brother?

“Be Peaceable Followers of Christ” by Elder Cook is all about the blessing of peace given to those who have faith in Christ. Instead of a question, here’s an invitation:

Elder Cook says: “First, He encouraged them to ‘praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.’”

Second, the Lord counseled if they were ‘sorrowful, call on the Lord thy God with supplication, that your souls may be joyful.’”

In Elder de Paula Parrella’s talk “Bearing Witness of Jesus Christ in Word and Actions” he reminds us of our promise to take the name of Christ upon us. Here is a question to consider as you study:

How can you bear witness of Christ through your words and actions?

“Walking in Covenant Relationship with Christ” by President Freeman is a reminder of the importance of our relationship with Jesus Christ. Here is a question to consider as you study:

What progress do you see in yourself and those around you on the covenant path?

President Ballard’s talk “Praise to the Man” is his simple and beautiful testimony of Joseph Smith and the restoration of the gospel. Here is a question to consider as you study:

What are you grateful for because of the restoration?

“Brothers and Sisters in Christ” by Ulisses Soares is an invitation to evaluate our own prejudices and try to be better. Here are some questions to consider as you study:

Do you have prejudices against any person or group in your life?

How can you start the process of rooting out that prejudice?

Sister Runia’s talk “Seeing God’s Family through the Overview Lens” is a beautiful testimony of the power of love. Here’s a question to ponder as you study:

How can you motivate those around you with love?

“Humble to Accept and Follow” by Elder Koch is a wonderful reminder to us to be teachable. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

In what ways can you be more humble - lean on the strength of God, Christ, and those around you?

Elder Sabin’s talk “Hallmarks of Happiness” echoes many of the themes already talked about in the talks up to this point - the atonement, God’s love, our identity as God’s child.

Instead of a question, here is an invitation: Record 5 things you’re grateful for this week - big or small, silly or serious.

“How Great Will Be Your Joy” by Elder Rasband is a call to senior couples to serve missions.

Do you have a joyful experience with a senior missionary couple or senior sister?

Elder Phillips’ talk “God Knows and Loves You” is a beautiful reminder that God truly does know and loves us. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How does remembering that everyone is a beloved Child of God change how you see those around you?

“Do You Want to Be Happy?” by Elder Choi is a reminder of the power of covenants in bringing long lasting joy to our lives. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

What are ways you turn to God in times of struggle?

Elder Stevenson’s talk “Promptings of the Spirit” gives great guidelines on how to have the Spirit more in your life. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How will you take steps to hear and listen to the promptings of the spirit more in your life?

“The Power of Jesus Christ in Our Lives Every Day” by Elder Costa is full of hope with Christ’s atonement as the cause for that hope. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How have you felt the strengthening power and reassurance of the atonement and God’s love in your life?

Elder Newman, in his talk “Preserving the Voice of the Covenant People in the Rising Generation,” reminds us of things that help us build our lives in Christ. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

What does “feasting on the words of Christ” look like for you and/or your family?

“Tithing: Opening the Windows of Heaven” by Elder Andersen is all about, you guessed it, tithing. And about the relationship between our temporal and spiritual blessings. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

How does tithing - and how do other more temporal commandments - help you remember your connection to spiritual things?

Elder Oaks’ talk “Kingdoms of Glory” reminds us of the love and mercy of God. Here is a question to consider as you study:

How does knowing that everyone will be welcomed into a Kingdom of Glory change the way you see those around you?

And a question that I think is interesting to think about:

Elder Oaks has two other talks where he says almost word for word two paragraphs in this talk (“Challenge to Become” October 2000 and “The Godhead and the Plan of Salvation” April 2017). What do you think about Elder Oaks repeating what he said in a talk he gave 23 years ago and 6 years ago?

“Love Thy Neighbor” by Elder Ardern is all about just that, loving your neighbor. Here’s a question to consider as you study:

“It is unlikely you will know the recipients of your time, dollars, and dimes, but compassion does not require us to know them; it only requires us to love them.”

How does this change how you think about your day to day interactions with strangers (and friends, family, and coworkers)?

Elder Christofferson’s talk “The Sealing Power” is a great lesson in what “sealing” really means in the context of priesthood ordinances. Here is a question to consider as you study:

How does the knowledge that the sealing power also applies to other ordinances you’ve participated in - or will participate in - change the way you think about those ordinances?

“For the Sake of Your Posterity” by Elder Godoy is all about how our actions affect our children, grandchildren, etc.- particularly when it comes to church activity. I had a hard time with this one, simply because I worry it opens up room to judge those who are inactive, less active, struggling, or are not members of the church at all. So, instead of questions, here is an invitation:

Think of people in your life who have left the church, are struggling with their testimony, have turned down your invitations to meet with missionaries or come to church things, and really try to understand why (maybe even ask them why!). Don’t disregard their reasons as too trivial or small or silly. Approach it from a place of love and see what you find.

Elder Daines’ talk “Sir, We Would Like to See Jesus” is such a beautiful testimony of the love of God! Here are a couple questions to consider as you study?

Do you feel (or have you felt) like this - only seeing God as a ruler, not a loving parent?

How can we shine his light to those around us?

In “Abide the Day with Christ,” Sister Wright reminds us of the need for spiritual preparation. Instead of a question, here is an invitation:

Imagine dying tomorrow and standing in front of Jesus. How do you feel? What would you wish you would’ve done? What would you want to tell him?

Elder Bednar’s talk “In the Path of Their Duty” reminds us of the small but significant actions of everyday people. Here are some questions to consider as you study:

In what ways do you feel unacknowledged or like you’re not making a difference?

How can you acknowledge others’ contributions at work, school, or church?

In his closing remarks “The Answer is Always Jesus Christ,” President Nelson reminds us to act on the promptings we received during Conference. In that light, here is a question to consider:

What have you done or plan to do with the impressions you received during General Conference?
